- Newport News Shipbuilding has launched John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), the U.S. Navy’s newest nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, into the James River. With the aid of six tugboats, Kennedy was guided down the river about a mile from Dry Dock 12, where the ship has been under construction, to the shipyard’s Pier 3. There, the ship will undergo additional outfitting and begin its testing program three months ahead of its original schedule.

Up next, the Enterprise CVN-80. Can't wait to see her cruisin'
As a classic Trek fan (NOT the reboot) I believe there should always be a commissioned ship named USS Enterprise.
longshot7601 Hell, as a fan of the WW2 Enterprise (CV-6), I'm glad she's back again
@@henryj.3724 I totally agree. I think that no other ship says "American strength and perseverance" than The Grey Ghost.
Hopefully these ship's never bare the name trump
@@MSkallywagg maybe a submarine...
And a few words of admiration and respect for the tugs - their work and coordination. Outstanding!
President Kennedy would be proud. Nobody builds ‘em like we do.
We the British do this better but in smaller quantity.
@@fury4539 why better?
@@zuccio8895 because the empire is going to strike back.😂😂😂

I think he would rather be alive
Served on CV-67, would be PROUD to sail on CVN-79
Same here 1977 to 1980! AIMD HYD SHOP
Me too ! I served aboard CV-67 1985 to 1987. This is so thrilling. It's great to share this event with you.
I served on CV-67 as well 1980-82, AIMD GSE. Would love to turn back time and smell the open ocean and jet fuel again.
Our captain at the time Jerry Tuttle, the crew called him (S.L.U.F) short little ugly f@#%r he found out and used to come over the 1mc and say this is sluf. Lol! a hard but fair captain we got thr battle E twice under him.
Me too 1981 to 1984. We got the Battle E and Golden Anchor in 1983.
Enterprise CVN-80 is next, I can't wait to see her when she's done!
But will she have warp drive?
@@davidtriana Gotta wait until 2063, but I will be in my 70's by then.
Me too
As a Sea Cadet, we were invited to see the USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) being built at Newport News Shipyard. Its flight deck was only half built and was an amazing sight. In 1975, was on a Destroyer and there when the Belknap and Kennedy collided. In 1985, was part of a team that upgraded her 48E Radar at NNSY. Full Circle people.
Man its hard tpo believe i was on this ship 2 years ago with no paint or nothing on it.. Flight deck nor the island was on it.. Now seeing the finished product is crazy
Thatguy_ Kountry know what you mean used to build em at Long Beach naval shipyard now long sadgone.
Sure finished product with it's own dedicated fleet of tugboats to move it around, lmao!
Michel Platteeuw you obviously know nothing above shipbuilding
@@scottcroce5277 Haha I build better ships in my backyard and? I know how to end a sentence. Obviously you know nothing about that, lol!
You know we can see all those tugboats right?
Michel Platteeuw ALL SHIPS IN HARBOR OR ENTERING HARBOR/DOCK ARE TUGBOAT GUIDED. GREAT TO SEE YOU SO HUNG UP ON GRAMMAR. AND IM SURE YOU BUILD 1000’ Long ships in YOUR backyard.Ships come off the ways partiality built, finished u dock side, ways cleared for next keel. Spent 9 years building and repairing Navy/ coast guard too/
Ships and huge support tankers, but you’re the smart as in the room. Right
Only the best for the best: Congratulations US Navy!
amazing piece of work...it shows the majestic power this machines bring to the USA. God bless America.
F
Kennedy is out next up 18 months of test. Drydock 12 is empty time to drain it and get Enterprise built.
@J K 13 billion out of a 1.4 trillion dollar annual budget and 750 billion pentagon budget. Now, I agree better things could be done with that money but go on, tell us how that building these ships is going to bankrupt the country
Already started.
@Hoan Nguyen America was given to a new smaller helicopter assault carrier that also handles F35s.
@@JustaPilot1 a 14 trillion dollar budget not a 1.4 trillion dollar budget. Most of it ends up going to medicare and medicaid anyways.
I love navy I in Navy 1974 I was born 11/11 veterans day.even went John F. Kennedy high school class June of 1972
A friend of mine was on that earley 70's Joe Kashmir.
I was aboard USS Forrestal when she came out of her dry dock at the PNSY after SLEP. A lot of minor work was needed before we left the shipyard for the trip south to Mayport. The ship only had a very small crew contingent aboard while at PNSY. The move south was interesting because they loaded the flight decks and hangar bays with crew automobiles so they didn't have to drive them to the new port. We laughed that the Navy was now in the ferry business.
My Cousin was on CVA 67, I was stationed on AOR-4 and we would wave at each other during refueling in the Alantic. I hope CVN 79 will carry on the spirit of the ship before here! It is great to see both those ships in my lifetime! God Bless America!
The United States is truly a maritime power country !
And over $22 TRILLION in debt! and rapidly growing!
@@nightlightabcd Not talking about debt but about being a superpowers of the United States of America
nightlightabcd
Yes but normal citizens can’t really feel that debt.
@@nightlightabcd yeah trillions in debt and we're still prosperous and rich. Unlike Germany in 1928
@@nightlightabcd Who cares! The United States is hardly going to go bankrupt is it lol
My old Carrier CV- 67 1981 -1984.
@Kevin Olschesky OZ Div.
I used to live in Norfolk as a child and touring battleships etc. on field trips and just seeing the dock yards was always so cool
Now that the dry dock is empty when is the keel laying ceremony for Enterprise?
Probably all ready started
The Enterprise CVN-80 already has a keel plate cut and signed by sponsors in 2018. She'll begin construction in 2020 and launched by 2025. Enterprise will later be christened on 2027 when she'll enter service
PCU Enterprise's keel plate was made with steel melted down from CVN-65.
When the tugs cam in and started to manoeuvre JFK it was a well choreographed ballet
As a CVA-67 plank owner in attendance at CVN-79’s christening, this is thrilling to watch!
The US Navy capability is second to none.
Excited about CVN-81 Doris Miller
AS A SALTY DOG MYSELF, IT WARMS MY HEART TO SEE HER FLOAT AND SERVE HER COUNTRY🇺🇸👍!!!!!!!!!! GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!
She is a beautiful ship, and a functional piece of art.
I made Chief on the original Kennedy in 1980! Great ship at the time, not the longest but her flight deck was the biggest at that time!
I’d like to see CVN 81 to be named USS Langley (to honor CV 1).
Also, it would be cool to have classic carrier names like Constellation, Ranger, and Kitty Hawk return.
Or a third USS Lexington.
CVN 81 will be named after Doris "Dorie" Miller, who was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions on 7 December, 1941.
@@johnjones5354 My comment was made before that announcement.
@@91_C4_FL No offense intended. Some people may not know the name, obviously you do.
Yeah that would be great. I was really hoping that with this new class they would stop naming them after presidents period. Then they name the whole class after one…Not that Kennedy isn’t deserving but there’s plenty more war heroes and historical battles that deserve to have and keep having ships named after them. They hopefully started that again with the Doris Miller. I’m holding out hope there will be another Midway and Coral Sea before we end up with the USS James K Polk and it’s plank owner Al Bundy who once scored 4 touchdowns in a single game.
God speed CVN79 and those who serve her. From a retired naval aviator.
Magnificent ship, outstanding work done by so many people. Enterprise next!
tugboats are so underrated.
Congratulations Huntington on another technical achievement
@J K sir what is your problem
Debbie Downer is off his meds again.
@@scottdoubleyou563 lol
The PLA navy doesn't like the video.
Outstanding work, a masterpiece - Congratulations US Navy - So proud and honored
It's weird to imagine how many generations of Sailors will serve on her, and many of them are babies right now. Or not even born.
I served on the old Kennedy from 97-01. One day ill step foot on this one. God bless this ship and her crew.
NNS great job, thank you and keep up the extraordinary work!
Another amazing workhorse for the fleet.
I was on CV-67, the John F. Kennedy in the late 90s. There had been talk of adding 50 feet and making it a Nuke, but then my son said they shut it down. Pretty sneaky to build it into CVN 79.
Nine people don’t like super carriers? My wife wouldn’t either but she’s smart enough not to watch the video lol.
I'm guessing Jihadis and Euro Trash and their subversive liberal fan clubs.
@Douglas Roper everyday americans can't feel effects of the debt lmao
@Douglas Roper I live in the US lol, trust me we don't feel anything. and if you do, you're just not trying in life.
Hard to believe, I was a sailor on the first JFK CVA 67 and now it's Mothballed!!
The first ship of every class, always takes the most money, and time, to get straight. But they killed it on this one...!!!
Air power from the sea! The finest sailors at her beck!! Serve with pride!!!
What a beautiful carrier! Well done!
oh man I have to go see it, I was on the USS JFK cv-67 in the late 70s
Time for her and the Ford to sail with Hms queen elizabith and Prince of Wales
That would be a beautiful sight
And have all four present at Enterprise's christening ceremony
@@DanielMcCool95 i agree
@@BLADE_KING47 it would be amazing to see, with E's two older sisters and her British cousins
yup and now that Drydock 12 is empty it is time to build Enterprise.
One tug boat was putting in the work.. evident from the pluming smoke occasionally
This is Ship look good ,Simple design and Smooth Flat Surface with Less Radar Detection, and also The Island Is Looks very Good
Props to the builders and the tugboat operators. And Prayers to all the sailors.
I was on big john (67), 75-77, then went to forrestal! Weapons dept, flight deck ordnance on the kennedy, elevator shop on forrestal
Wow I remember the CV-67 when I had the unexpected opportunity to be in a Dependents and Frineds Cruise. Didnt know there was a new class with another JFK. Beautiful.
cool video , those tug boats did an amazing job )
Three questions:
1.Was the power plant operational at this time?
2. If not, how did they provide power for the air conditioning and lights?
3. Why not use propellor pods similar to those on cruise ships now? The cruise ships are equal in size to an aircraft carrier, so why not use them?
I’m shocked it already built and launched! Wow.
Short Question...what do you guess, wich Weaponsystem(Warship etc.)is the biggest dread for an Aircraftcarrier?
I do hope the US Navy and administration will put these carriers to good use like restraining China or another autocratic regime.
My dad used to launch planes off of this ship back in the late 70s early 80s pretty awesome stuff.
I think you mean the old JFK. This ship has not entered service yet.
@@LongJumpingSurprise you are correct didn't realize what I posted when I posted it. Lol
Watching Tug Boats at work always fascinates me.... watching them in high speed like this makes them seem like Living Creatures like Whiles or Dolphins, the way the Tug Boats move seems like they are Creatures with 360 degree Self Awareness
Built Strong! Last Long! With each new “City” comes innovation,..making each one unique! John Paul Jones is smiling! Is there a part of PT 109 on board? Profile in courage......read it as a teenager........well,....some of it. My Fathers book!
sonoki82 money well spent.
So is this the newest aircraft carrier in the USN?
This ship is sexy and awesome 😲😉👍
Wow I feel like it was just yesterday when I saw the Gerald R. Ford float.
Wonderful video. Thank you! Blessings from Forrestal CV59 sailor~
Damn I was in the US Navy 50 years ago when we had some bad ass carriers like the Forrestal, Ranger, Saratoga, Connie Kitty Hawk, America, and a few old Essex class carriers as I was on one. But as good as they were these new Ford class carriers are the cats ass. What a great time to be in the Navy and be lucky enough to serve on a Ford Class carrier. I'd just about give my left testicle to spend a few days at sea aboard one of these beauts. Semper Fortis.
Be interesting to see how that ship would handle the big storms I've sailed in with those overhangs. Now they just need to find enough sailors to actually sail it.
these are replacing retiring ships, not expanding the fleet. there will be plenty of available sailors for it.
Does anyone know if there going to be aircraft carriers name Yorktown, hornet, midway, Essex, Langley or Lexington in the future? I like the hull number CVN-80 for Enterprise and are they going to call her “ the Big E” or she have to earn the name first?
Please answer me What will it be delivered USS John Kennedy ?
What a beauty! How long until she sails under her own power?
2 years of Finishing to be done. So mid to late 2025.
That tug under the-flight island needs a new engine . Blowing heaps of smoke.
At 1:12 that one tugs engine is screaming what are you doing to me lol
My nephew is a civilian contractor on the base. He has a front row seat for all of this.
When does it’s A1B reactor get fired up.....
Is the elevator fixed, yet?
The tolerances may have been too tight for a flexible ship.
Was there a problem with them?
@@AR_119 Yeah there were issues with Gerald R. Ford-class Aircraft Carriers. Those issues had surfaced back in 2017 when the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) was commissioned. There were issues about the weapons elevators and the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) itself. But they were working on it and more than halfway to solve those problems right now.
@@reymiguelperez6643 oh gotcha. Thanks for the info 👍
Wow
What an awesome sight!
it has another 4 years of work until it's ready to go.
Bring on the Enterprise !!!
That Warship is bigggggggggggg...💪💪😍😍😱😱😱😱
2 questions. I know you guys already have some superlifts of Enterprise done so how long till they get laid out into the dock? The next question is I guess you guys paint the carrier name on the stern later?
Goes into service late 2020??? Congrats to the US Navy!!!!!
THATS VERY NICE TO SEE GOD BLESS ONE AND ALL.
absolutely wicked
Cuando se entregue a la Marina de E.E.U.U. se podra decir que ha sido un gran trabajo de construcción, enhorabuena a todos sus trabajadores y en especial a sus diseñadores
She is not being launced, she is being moved to a different pier. Great video, misleading headline.
Those tugs looked like minons.
I love how a good chunk of the comments are about the new Enterprise being next. "I'mma gonna let you finish JFK, but Big E was the best of all time! All time!"
Names are important. Finally getting away from politicians and back to old ships and heroes again. 5th ship should be named after Ernest E Evans.
Yes that would be great. But a destroyer would be better to be named after him.
I was on the CVA 67 USS JOHN F KENNEDY
Will covid slow production of next carriers?
Bravo US, no ccp
This is a Gerald R Ford class carrier, right?
Correct, Kennedy is the 2nd Ford class carrier after the namesake.
The second Gerald R Ford is ready
But we need the Grey Ghost to beat the hell out of her enemies just as CV-6 and CVN-65 did
When is enterprise?
Amen! I think it was criminal Nimitz and the navy didn't save CV6 The most decorated ship in WW2.
Naw lets get ready to cristen another ship for the US Navy. 😉👍
Where's the nameplate? I can see they haven't attacked the hull number to the island, either...

Three months ahead of schedule... Can you come over here and get BAE to pull their over priced ship building finger out please!
Anyone else here serve aboard CV-67?? What a hunk of junk that ship was! Glad to see a replacement namesake carrier. Looking into the differences between the Nimitz class and Gerald R. Ford class carriers..
I would like them to bring back USS America as a cvn.
