  • This rather long video is a result of once-per-second images taken of the July 2013 Chariot Fire on Mt. Laguna via a stationary HPWREN camera. The camera had been provided by SDG&E. The video is slightly sped up, but still shows a lot of details on fire progression, air drops, and dozer work. Different fire progression effects are much easier visible by substantially speeding up the video even further. Real-time images are available at hpwren.ucsd.edu...

Devin, the original >50,000 image Ogg/Theora file is almost 3.8GB in size. The online version is from a >5.5GB MPEG4 version that I used since UA-cam had problems with the .ogv file. The main reason I put it on UA-cam was because it does a god job on making lower quality, but much more bandwidth-manageable versions available. That said, if you can deal with the formats and file sizes, let me know via the HPWREN web feedback form, and I will see about getting you a version.

Absolutely fantastic! As a retired firefighter who fought fire all over San Diego County in the 1960's-70's, I've naturally been following this since fire since its start... esprecially on the hpwren sites. Images from other hpwren sites clearly show the mushroom cloud formation from many miles away (such as Los Pinos, Mesa Grande, Mt Woodson, Volcan Mtn., etc.). Viewers can see the hand crews ("hot shots" removing vegetation to protect the same towers these photos are taken from -- (more...)

Your cameras are a wonderful window to San Diego Co. Selfishly, I especially appreciate the Mt. Woodson East cam, as I can keep an eye out on my property & environs remotely. Great stuff!

Great perspective! My strike team was working that flank of the fire all afternoon. It's really cool to see how all the work we did affected the fire behavior. I even saw my engine drive up at the end to pick up our crew!

(continuing comment above...) ...even setting-up a fireline communications antenna. I show many hpwren images on a set titled "Chariot Fire" on my Flickr.com photostream. flickr.com/photos/konabish/sets/72157634549145731/ The screen name is konabish - Greg Bishop. The hpwren cameras allow us a view that otherwise would never be seen. And much of it is the natural beauty of nature, in images of sky, sunsets, clouds, and more... even birds and other animals. Thank-you!!!
