North Wales 1.5 Kw Hydroelectric System Part 5 Making The Turgo Turbine

  • This week I have been working on the turgo turbine for the customer hydro electric installation. it is a 170mm pcd 17 spoon turgo turbine with a 2" bsp spear valve mounted in a custom made stainless steel housing. I have taken everything I have learnt from mine and applied all the changes I would have done if I had the skills and tools at the time. I think it came out well and im quite sure it will be very efficant

There are people of UA-cam teaching an unsustainable life but saying otherwise. And then there is Chris. Doing things right. Figured his own lifestyle out, teaching by example and now doing his own business. I'm awed. Much skills, brain and dedication.

@@musicbro8225 I wouldn't. He has documented evidence that he's got stuff done. I know he complains about the extra effort but that's worth more I think in the long run.
He certainly does not have to worry as much about the manipulated shake-down the rest of us are under.

Personally speaking, don't worry too much about quality issues while you're trying to film by yourself. It comes across as honest and unfiltered work, and that's exactly what I love about your channel. Nothing I saw in today's video was problematic for me in the slightest! Keep up the great work!

I’ve spent almost a month binging your initial hydro series, then the workshop, then the greenhouse, and now I’m watching some of the in-between videos. As someone who is planning to move out of the city and build a fully off-grid homestead, the knowledge I’m gaining from you has been invaluable and will be put to good use as I find the land that will fit me and my family’s needs all the way through how we develop the land for the best balance of conservation and usability.
Keep rocking on, you’re doing amazing things and are an inspiration to us all!

The last time I saw one of your videos you made a wool processing box out of plywood. Fast forward you have a full service machine shop with plasma cutter etc. These projects seem to flow out from your mind through your hands. Your God-given talents are maturing. Good on you bro, seems you built yourself an off-grid shop that would be a valuable community resource in a grid-down scenario.

I loved the honkin big plastic handle you made to turn it, even without the silver paint. That's a beefy turbine that needs some beefy parts. Can't wait to see it run!

    • @Muck006
      @Muck006 2 роки тому

The one thing that would be missing is a gauge telling you how much the valve is opened ... and this handle would be the thing to do it. A simple marker on one end (which is at the top when it is fully closed ... to give it an easy starting point) would do the trick and then you have to test/remember how many turns you can make with the handle for it to be fully open. Divide that into "sections" and add a way to remember/mark the number of turns it is opened atm. and you have a "power level".

Chris, research broaching a key in a bore with a boring bar in your lathe. Basically lock your spindle, mount a tool the width of the keyway you need in a boring bar. Just hand feed the carriage back and forth using the cross slide to make small cuts. Your a cleaver guy, this should be enough to get you started. Old machinist trick we were taught at the beginning of our machinist apprenticeships. My grandfather even did it that way back in the 1920's. Worked then, still works now.

Excellent Work! I love watching your videos! Your lathe speed 5:08 sounded and looked to be around 800-1000 ish rpm. Try running most stainless and chromoly steels around quarter that surface speed/cutting speed to avoid that high pitch chattering. Helpful little equation is (sorry, its for inches) CS x 3.82 / Dia. Guessing your bore is roughly 1.375" 35mm and a good cutting speed for stainless is 70, then 70 x 3.82 = 270* and 270 / 1.375 = 200*rpm. ID boring likes more speed given the nature of the cut so 200-300rpm. For the 12mm drill 270* / .472 = 566rpm. 500rpm, round down for drilling. Those alloys LOVE slow and heavier cuts. Cheers!

Top tip , well my two pennies worth !
If you just turning on the lathe , disengage the lead screw and feed shaft.
The lead screw is generally run slower as it’s used when screw cutting.
Gearbox is probably not meant to run at that high speed.
It will also be a lot quieter on a older machine !!!!
It’s great watching it all come together.

Just brilliant watching you work, create and build. You inspired my path into a solar setup for my garage and home office. Thank you.

Chris could you add a secondary tank in line with your compressor to bypass the power issues that cause your plasma cutter to miss holes. Not sure if that would be adequate to get you through an entire job but might be worth a thought. I really enjoy following your channel. Keep up the great work.

I was going to say the same thing, if you can find an old broken compressor you can use the tank as an accumulator (more cheaply than just buying one new)

Just flat out impressed by the designs, quality and workmanship. I want a system how you build it. ❤

2 suggestions, 1st, try using Rocol RTD when machine, drilling or tapping stainless steel, I have had a lot of success with it. 2nd, when you are tig welding, you might find your welds get nicer looking if you rest your hand holding the torch.
I do congratulate you on a very good approach to your work and I am enjoy watching how you achieve your engineering goals, keep up the good work.
