Thank you so much for this!! Just successfully used this on an 03 pilot.. Fun fact to add to this, you don't have to take the whole assembly off w/ the breakaway bolts, you simply need an offset Phillips screwdriver, ($2-$4 at any hardware store) and take out the hidden back screw on the immobilizer and all the gold screws on the immobilizer, then the ignition lock slips right out!
Hey im having major issues getting the tumbler to slide out, my key won't turn any longer and like a putz I locked my steering wheel, luckily in my driveway! Any help would be much appreciated!
Yesterday, when I was picking my daughter from her swimming class, the key of my 2003 Honda Pilot got stuck for a last time and never turned! I was initially very frustrated, but came back home, watched your video, took my tools, biked to where the car was and fixed it!! I removed 4 wafers and my key turns like never before! And I saved myself lots of money and trouble. You are awesome! :)
Thank you! This video helped me fix my own Odyssey with the same problem. I appreciate the step-by-step approach and your enthusiasm, optimism, and satisfaction reminded me to stay calm while I tackled the job.
My hat is off to you. You absolutely nailed it on this issue. Worn lock cylinders on Hondas are a common problem that are costly to repair. You showed me how to fix this problem and saved me a lot of time, trouble, and money. Thank you very much!
Worked like a charm , just be careful while removing bad levers , if you pull key out make sure you have a good hold on the cylinder! if you don't levers will fall out {like they did for me) and your job becomes much harder !! just brace the levers as you pull out key to remove bad levers !! Your a cool lady and I think its awesome that you have the guts to take on a tedious job like this, BIG HUG!!!
Thanks for the vid. i was able to remove the ignition! Decided to call a local locksmith. He rebuilt it for $100. Charged an extra $30 to change over electronics from my 2 original keys to the 2 new ones he made. no need to reprogram. Saved me lots of $. Thank u!
You are God Sent! I just finished repairing my 2003 Honda Civic's ignition lock cylinder after almost getting a heart attack when a local "affordable" locksmith told me the repair will cost me $500. I then went to see my regular mechanic and he quoted me $525, time to roll up my sleeves and I bought the picks and a special type of angled screw driver, I didn't have to remove the 2 divet you did that's the only difference. Thank you again!
My honeys 2003 odyssey had just kept getting worse every day with key not turning and getting stuck out somewhere for sometimes 35 mins try to get back home. We watched this after looking on ebay for very expensive parts and a $550 quote from the Honda dealer, so we said what the heck we're at a few hundred no matter what... let's try it! 2 1/2 hours later after watching and works perfect! Removed them all, marking where they all went and found 1 bent one and another 2 with bad edges. Took those 3 out with the springs and works better than new! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Great positive thinking was the key to your success that has helped hundreds.
@@fredymelendez4773 That is about an asshole comment to make. So what if she wants to keep her hair short, no big deal. But here we go, you want to be a misogynist, I will be a racist. What do you expect coming from a latino? They have to come to our country because their own countries are shit holes.
Thank you for your help. This saved me major $$. I replaced the collar screws with hex screws from Fastenal for $3.49. They were 8 mm x 1.25 pitch 14 mm long. Took the cylinder to a locksmith they charged $50.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO.i had to do this to my wife’s 04 odyssey and it worked perfect only took me an hour at most and it was back working again.everyone with this problem needs to see this video and save HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS.thanks again
I wanted to thank you for this video. Though there was a lot that we couldn’t see due to the camera angles and sped up sequences hidden behind your hands, this video was still a great reference to get started on the job. I ended up watching a few videos over and over to get used to the steps I’d need to take, and I ended up just looping your video while I was doing the job. So thank you. I was able to fix the problem - removed 5 tumblers/wafers! Not sure if that is too many but there are no problems now. Before I stuck the cylinder back in I used brake parts cleaner on it and flushed out all the bad dirt and grease and then soaked it in WD40. One thing I’d like to say is that anyone doing this job should put a magnetic bowl under the cylinder and ignition - I dropped the same set pin and a few screws a bunch of times but was saved by having the bowl suck them into its magnetic field.
April 8, 2018. Thought I was gonna need to replace the entire thing and buy a $90 reprogramer with money I don't have. You saved me big time! Thank you Soo much!
You are way braver then me fixing this yourself. I ave the same problem with my 2004 Honda Civic. I called our local locksmith to come fix it. Hopefully they will not charge me too much. I saw on Amazon the replacement part was less than $30.00 to buy a new one with a new key.
I'm glad to see some people are learning to fix cars more and more. Mechanics earn their money , nothing easy about memorizing the quirks of so many different vehicles. Try changing out a cylinder to a car from 70s or 80s .. BIG difference lol ..
Surprise, surprise, surprise. Yet another happy customer. I had three bad wafers. Pulled them out along with their springs. Maybe 2 hrs total. My 2003 Pilot has a little access cover on the upper shroud. Accessing and pushing allowed me to take the shifter out of park without the key. That made it easy to get the upper shroud off. I used a hacksaw to cut a groove in the sheer screws. Made it super easy to put back in without a trip to the hardware store. Thanks so much for the tutorial.
ive been driving my van for 3 months and have been noticing that my ignition switch was not cooperating, it sometimes came to the point of praying when me and my wife travelled to losangeles we got stock for about 10 minuites i tought it will never starts. so i totally had it and before contacting the dealer i went to youtube and saw this post and i tought i give it a shot. im not a tech kinda guy but i did it im so proud of my self . thaks for posting this video i hate spending my hard earned money to steallership.p.s. i ended up removing all the wafers the only draw back is you could pull the key out when your car is running but that doesnt bother me.
I currently have this problem with my 03 odyssey. There were many times when I would insert, or try rather , in to my ignition and would only go half way in. Then I’d jiggle the key a little bit and would successfully go all the way in and start her up.This happened a lot times. Well, I went to store a couple miles away and when I went back to my van to leave, the key fully inserted but would not turn at all ! Kept trying to turn it for literally two hours before I had to call AAA to get a tow. Then I came across this video, so I’m hoping I’ll have success in fixing it just as you did. Thank you for the very informative video
Just wanted to send you big thanks and blessings for helping me fix this problem on my 04 Honda Pilot. The key started sticking and then 2 days ago it would not turn in the cylinder at all. The only difficulty was the first roll pin but with someone else's advice it came out and the rest went smooth. ( drill down next to the pin and nick the pin at a 45 degree angle, insert small pointed awl or nail and pry up) . You have helped more people than you can imagine. If you live in Virginia I will bake you something nice. ♥️ B.
2004 Odyssey. (note she was lucky with the roll pin I spent most of my time on, It just fell out for her, wow. This is my 2 cents on this problem, hope it helps!) Had the same problem and fixed this for $1. Need to be comfortable with working on cars and willing to learn a bit about lock mechanism. Here is a synopsis: Key will not turn in ignition lock, wafer(s) inside lock cylinder are worn out. 1. Removed negative battery terminal (to prevent air bag issues) 2. Removed the steering column plastic shroud (three screws bottom 3. Unhooked a wiring harnesses for clearance to the clamp. 4. sed a chisel to “bite” into two bolts holding u bolt clamp and tapped them out ccw. 5. Removed the wires for the immobilizer (about 4 screws) and the ignition switch (two screws on back) and the key mechanism was out. 6. Used a scribe to scratch alignment marks so you put in back correctly 7. Removed the lock cylinder from the housing. Note there is a roll pin that you have to drill a 45 degree hold with about 1/16” drill bit and pry out with a sharp machinist scribe or awl. I could not get it out any other way (pry method did not work) 8. The cylinder then came out and there is then a second roll pin, you can punch out easily with a 1/32 pin punch 9. Then pull out the wafers that stick up and remove the spring for them also. You can see the real trouble makers easy, but two on mine were less obvious, I just pulled the ones that stuck up the most until it turned smooth. 10. Instead of fitting shear head bolts when I reassembled to steering column... I got a pair of M8/1.25 x 16 cap head bolts from Home Depot, these worked perfectly. The only cost was for the new bolts. 11. Total time for me was 2.5 hours 30 minutes to remove the assembly, 1.5 to fix the tumblers (most time spent with the first roll pin!) 30 minutes to reassemble. I am airplane mechanic and have good mechanical skills.
Last night the key in my 2005 Honda accord would not turn over. We have been having some issues with it lately but last night was the first time we could not get it started. I used this video on my I phone to get it started. Great video, very helpful.
Great video! One thing I found when pulling the key & wafers out of the cylinder (@ 7:30 in your video), be careful the wafers don't come flying out. They are spring loaded. I sprayed WD40 in the lock prior...so 3 of the 4 bottom wafers fell out. I had no idea which order they went back in. I decided to pull all the wafers out (except for the last u-shaped one. Everything works great!
Rich Enders I like videoing every thing I do. Mostly because I never know if I will be interrupted in the middle of the job and forget what I have already done.
Excellent video. Had mine lock up today and the mechanic quoted me $500 to fix it. Limped it home and pulled the mechanism apart to find that one of the wafers was pretty roughed up and there were gouges inside the cylinder. Not only that but three of my springs were down right missing! Anyway, got it put back together and working so I just wanted to say thanks.
I LOVE YOOOUUUUU!!!!! you amd i have a special bond... the special bond that only comes from saving a man money. Lol... thanks so much. I watched several videos and yours matched my car the best and was real... I told myself... "self...how can you respect yourself as a handyman if this beautiful young lady can fix this and you cant..." lol.. thanks again. My only addition which didn't look like it happened to you is a small brass flat head pin fell out of mine. It came from the underside where the key goes in and is covered by the immobilizer and a small plunger rests on it. Mine fell out and it took me 20 min to figure out where it was supposed to go. If you dont notice it fall out its lost and dont know what would happen in the plunger area. SAVED ME A BOOTYLOAD! You're my Kirsten Dunst! I love you 3000...
Great help, thanks. Great story...I watched your video one morning. I make home visits in my job and the next day my ignition failed in a someone's driveway...YIKES. I borrowed a few tools from the gracious folks and sat in their driveway for about 2 1/2 hours while I did this job. Worked great!!! Thanks for the help!
I thank God for you and your willingness to attempt something like this. You inspire a lot of people for your efforts. You saved me a lot of money and being stranded. You inspire me to tackle things that may look difficult , and never be afraid to try to fix anything. Wonderful video! I just finished fixing my 2004 odyssey! 😀👏🏿
Oh My Gosh, you made me cry (good tears).....thank you so much for such a great compliment!!

thank you so much for making this video, you saved me at least $600 and a lot of headaches. the first set screw also just flew out, but I was eventually able to find where it's supposed to go. had a tough time punching out the second set screw, but was finally able to do it using a nail gun finish nail. also, a few of the wafers just fell out and I couldn't figure out where they went so I just removed all of them! now the car starts with any key, but I don't mind, it's an '03 Pilot so anyone is welcome to steal it haha
Allowing your car to be used by all is a great service to society. I myself leave the doors unlocked and leave some blankets in the rear seat so that homeless people, if they want to, can sleep overnight.
just fixed my ignition for the same car. Had to remove all the wafers as one after the other they just won't sit in anymore. SO i basically have a key that starts the car but doesn't lock it any more. the key just comes out in any position. but for an old car like this spending 700+ at the dealer is not an option. I almost installed a brand new ignition but then it wont start the car and needs reprogramming. well this video saved the day and tons on money. thanks a lot.
You are a lifesaver. Had to buy a roll pin punch set, like a needed an excuse, but followed your vid to a tee. Now my wife can still get to work while I get replacement parts. God love ya.
Amazing demonstration! Completed this exact repair today after watching this yesterday (while waiting for my tow home). A perfect solution and the vehicle still is secure with programmed keys! Thanks so much!
Thanks. We are on vacation and our ignition got stuck last night when we were leaving the restaurant. Had the car towed(free AAA) back to the house we are staying at. Got up this morning and luckily found a couple of tools. Removed the switch and took out one of the tumblers. Reinstalled and bam....works like a charm. 2003 Honda pilot.
I know this was 2014, But it saved my life in 2016!!! It was fix it or scrap it, I had no money. I did improve a few moves but I would have been lost with out this video!!!! and when I fixed it, I too proclaimed... THIS IS A GOOD DAY!!! Thank You soooo soooo much!
Ma'am,. You are my kind of mechanic, with your "thingys" and "oops, that can't be good". You saved me alot of time and money. I can't thank you enough. If you were local I'd take you out for dinner lol. Thanks again and keep doing what you do.
Thank you!!! It worked great. Hour and half. After removing the break-away screws, I took a dremal cutting disk and cut a slot in the heads of them creating a flat head screw. Made reassembly much easier.
Thanks for the video. I was able to repair my 03 Oddy using this. I had a heck of a time getting the flush inserted roll pin out so that I could withdraw the cyclinder from the housing. Used another reviewers tip of drilling in a 1mm drill bit at 45 degrees and prying the pin upwards. Wish my roll pin fell out! Used a small dremmel disc to cut slots into the shear bolts - works well but be careful not to damage the nearby cabling. I removed all the wafers except for the large circular one.
I’ve learned the most from you than the last six videos and I Thank You Kindly! The Native People’s often had boards of Grandmothers as the wise ones and I believe we need to get back to this system. I believe your video backs this up! Love, Peace, Joy of Spirit and Fine Fix It’s! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
Hey thank you so much for your great video. It was going to cost me about $500-700 to have the Honda dealership fix my problem. But I spent about $10 on a few tools and a fuse (which i blew because I didn't disconnect the battery first!) and now my problem is fixed. I would not have been able to do this without your video. A few things I wanted to share to help others out: 1) you can buy the ignition cylinder yourself with a new key for about $150. But then you have to tow your vehicle to the dealership and pay them $60 to code the key (which has a chip in it) to the computer in your van. Then you have 2 different keys, one for your ignition, and the old key for your doors. I didn't like this option. Her 'repair' option costs nothing and you still get to keep the same key!!!! 2) I couldn't get the breakaway bolts off easily. I would recommend using a short or stubby wood spade bit. If it is short enough, you'd have enough room to use a hammer to create the divot necessary to turn out the breakaway bolts. I couldn't get the divot created easily as my bolts didn't have divots already created by someone else. I ended up removing the windshield wipers control arm and the turn signal control arm to create more room to work. Then I could get my dremmel tool with a metal cut off disc to grind some small slots in the tops of the breakaway bolts. Then they were very easy to remove and reinstall later. 3) disconnect the battery first! I blew a fuse. (which is a 50A ignition fuse in the engine compartment) took me a while to figure it out and I was a bit nervous as nothing worked when I put it all back together again. but a new $3 fuse fixed everything and now it works great. Thanks so much you are awesome!!
bill doe you would know if the fuse blew because when you turn the key everything would be dead and the car wouldn't start... it wouldn't even make any noise. My fuse blew because a wire rubbed against a metal ground and I heard a spark. That happened when I was moving things around. So I highly recommend you disconnect the battery.
So I did this today and I was so proud of myself and my boyfriend was so shocked and pleased when I turned the key and it worked. Thank you so much for the video
as an ASE certified tech and an Odyssey owner that just started experiencing this issue I'm glad i found this video because i was sure as shit gonna replace the whole unit. digging into it tomorrow after work because I'm about 99% certain my issue will be the same. thanks for doing the detective work for me.
Joshua Soles no you don't. She's not replacing the cylinder look assembly. When you buy the new lock assembly it comes with new keys that obviously have to be programmed to the immobilizer. As your old keys will no longer work because they won't unlock the cylinder. Your old keys get thrown out with the old lock cylinder assembly. All she did was remove all the tumblers from the key cylinder that basically allows you use any key to the cylinder as there's nothing locking it anymore. The only thing that prevents someone from stealing her van is the fact that the chip in the head of her key is programmed to the immobilizer system in the van. Otherwise anyone could steal her van using any key in their pocket. You can even stick a screwdriver in the cylinder and turn it. Without the tumblers there's nothing keeping it from turning.
I just started my research on the exact same problem on my (new to me) 2004 Odyssey. I am totally impressed by your Video, you are a woman after my own heart. The Dealership gave me a quote of $600! Being Scottish, I think I will go your route. I hope it works as well for me because it's getting to be a bit frustrating. All the Best to you, keep on fixing things and Posting Videos. Once again, very impressed ;)
Thank you so much!!! It took 5 to 15 mins to start everytime I had to go somewhere in 100 degree weather. Key would get stuck when trying to turn the car off. I did the exact same thing you did and it now works like new.
Great video... Few things to point out: Make sure to remove the small springs when you remove the wafer or they can come loose and cause a jam; and, make sure to re-grease the cylinder housing before re-installing...
Thanks for the tutorial. Fixed it with hardly any swearing on my part. Those bolts are a bugger to get out. My guess is they break off at the top so they don't bend the steering column at the factory. I took the Dremel and cut channels in the bolts so I could use a flat head screwdriver to tighten them. I just made sure not to tighten them too much, but if I ever have to do this again it'll be easier to get them off. The plastic covers didn't cooperate when I put them back on, so I may have to do some taping. Oh well. She's an '02 with 245k miles on her. What's a little more tape?
Locksmith here, actually did a Honda ignition rebuild today. I will say the reason we charge so much is because when we “fix” it, we replace ALL the wafers in the cylinder and dress any rough spots with a file, grease it and reassemble it. Also, you get a new key, guaranteeing you 10 years of heavy usage out of your new ignition!
Great tutorial. I have same on my Odyssey also. Can I just buy repair set of all wafers and replace each one as you pull back in? Does it make much more difficult? If it is, as regular back yard mechanic like me just want to leave bad wafer out. Ramy, can you tell us how much more it would cost and process I have to go for replacing each wafer? I googled and found Honda key waifer set for $65+shipping.
You guys are amazing with what you can do with locks and keys. Thank you for the information. I just was in a place where I didn’t have enough money to have that taken care of. But you guys deserve every penny you get!
I love listening to another analytical mind solving problems. I talk these things through myself all the time. I know your doing it for the camera, but I can't help thinking you talk things through out loud and that you did this before you started this channel. I feel like you do this all the time regardless of recording. In any event, great video and keel the videos coming!
Igot the same problem with my Honjda Element and already call a guy to fix my igniton swicth, but after wach this video i thing am going to canceled because tomorrow thanks to this great LADY i will going to try to fixed my self so wish me luck and i lethen know what happen later, till now thankyou for post this video.
All I can say is Wow. Great job on the video, so helpful and informative. Just spent the last 3 hours today helping my neighbor with this very problem. Your video saved my boy some serious money and headaches lol. Just wanted to say thank you and keep up good work!
At 3:37, I like the "oops! that can't be good". It happens to everybody all the time . I'm having a similar problem with my Honda Pilot and I hope I don't get to that "oops!" point. Thank you so much for sharing your video.
+I Fix Things I have same problem, my keys don't turn at all they just go in to the key cylinder can it comes out with out turning to position one , just by putting key in side the cylinder?
This is what a real woman behaves like. NOT a damsel in distress ... or a distressed-out.damsel. An independent woman with agency and spunk, minis the snarky feminist attitude that usually ajoins a self-capable woman. How refreshing! This was the video I liked best in order to fix my van.Your video was a pleasure to watch and thorough enough to mimic. You go girl & thanks.
Thanks a lot for video . I purchased a Dremel for the brkwy bolts and once those were off, it went smoothly ..whew.. what a relief, and to have it fixed the same day!
That is cool to see a women fix her car God bless you. I have to do the same thing to my Honda Odyssey I went to church and could not get it to star up. You have a nice day.
She even teaches how a mechanic would think, to many people rely on videos like this instead of trouble shoot them self’s, I think it’s because were worried we’d create a bigger mess
Thank you, worked great. I dropped the screw that clamps the lock cylinder to the steering column (and could not find it) , so replaced them both with Allen wrench top “ SOCKET CAP SCREW M8-1.25 X 16mm metric plain” from home depot , easier to get in than original
Instead of ruining a spade bit in order to cut a grove in the breakaway bolts it is better (and dealer recommended) to use a chisel from either side to rotate the bolts. After you have the bolts out you can cut groves into the bolts with a die grinder or drimel to make their re-installation a breeze.
+Andrew Rouse I already had a divot in the bolt so I simply used the tip of the spade bit to turn the screw out. Otherwise I too would have used a dremel tool to cut a grove in it and just screw it out. Love your feedback.....thank you!!!!
@@disasterdetail5520 yes. I did it a couple years ago and have since gotten rid if the van (ac went out). I recall pulling a couple of the lil pins out and that made it super easy to crank
@@lilolive231 nope i just pulled the lock cylinder out just the trim piece and 2 screws then poped the ciliner pin out pulled it appart and all the waffers fell out, now any key starts the van lol but it worked awssme
Thanks for the video. I’m about to work on the lock cylinder now, it got it. I’m gonna put slots on the heads of the knock off/security screws. So I can just use a slotted head screw driver to tighten them back. 👍
david ernesto Are you using the same key that you were using before you put in the new cylinder? If you change the switch and get a new key, you have to have the new key flashed with the onboard computer. Otherwise it wont work. That is why I did not want to put in a new cylinder. I did not want the trouble of having to go to the dealership. Also make sure you plugged everything back in.
wow so much work my cylinder is jam I have to replace it with a new ignition. I couldn't do all that I just replace it. Very thorough you know alot mam.
One thing I would add to this is... I had this problem with my 98 Accord and thought I was going to have to take it a part like you. But luckily I was told by a local locksmith that 90% of the time he finds that it's the key not the lock! So if you ave another key see if it works better. If that doesn't solve the problem (or you don't have one) check to see if your key is worn out, if so get a key cut from the VIN so it's a fresh copy not a copy of a bad key. (shop around at different dealers some have better prices). After seeing the new key I couldn't believe how worn out my key really was! Also the dealer may be the only way to get a true VIN cut key.
I ended up going back in and taking all the wafers out as well. And the key slips out like it’s stuck in butter. LOL. Everything still works otherwise.
Your awesome, great job. Been doing locks for a while and nice to see you get it done. 2 comments, 1 the "set screw"/roll pin often doesn't come out that easy, at lest almost never for me. 2 if you get the ignition in your hand if possible bring it to a locksmith shop and they should be able to replace the wafers at a fair price.
Great video! Just wondering if you ever had any problems with having to Jimmy the key in your door prior to having problems with the ignition. Had a replacement key made at Honda which wasn't the smoothest. Maybe a year later I have this ignition problem. My original key worked for a while after having to Jimmy it in ignition now that won't turn. Will be fixing my ignition soon Lord's Will thanks to your great tutorial!
Lady I don't know you but you were absolutely right on the process thanks IE dealership wants $600 to replace and Auto Parts want to 54 replace this took me 30 minutes and was free including the tools I already have
I just fixed mine - woo hoo! Thanks for your help. Also, for others: You can simply take out ALL the wafers and never deal with this again. Before you all jump on me about security - guess what? If the correct transponder key isn't in the ignition, it won't start even though you can turn the key to the ON position. So I can use my Element key to listen to the radio in the Odyssey, but it won't start the car.
+B Melcher Absolutely correct about the transponder key. I figured if they had what it takes to break into my car....not having wafers will be the least of my worries! I am so glad this video helped.
This video saved me from the highway robbery of the dealership. Thank you very much. Keep up the good work.
+Robert Carter Thank you sooooo much! I am grateful to have been able to help.
About to have to do this to my 03 honda pilot.. Ugh!!
Your the shit thankyou
WHERE?! Is the hidden screw?! I can't find it and don't wanna have to remove the bolts 😭
Hey im having major issues getting the tumbler to slide out, my key won't turn any longer and like a putz I locked my steering wheel, luckily in my driveway! Any help would be much appreciated!
Is the hidden screw on the immobilizer?
Hello. I'm a retired mechanic with 25 years experience and I think you look like a pro. Very impressed with your work. Have a blessed day!
Tom Wilcox Wow!! thank you so very much! You just made my day.
Congrats!! Thank you for your comment.
Thank you! This video helped me fix my own Odyssey with the same problem. I appreciate the step-by-step approach and your enthusiasm, optimism, and satisfaction reminded me to stay calm while I tackled the job.
I am so very glad that this helped out!!
Thank you soooo much for your kind post. Congrats for fixing it!!!!! You rock.
Thanks for the vid. i was able to remove the ignition! Decided to call a local locksmith. He rebuilt it for $100. Charged an extra $30 to change over electronics from my 2 original keys to the 2 new ones he made. no need to reprogram. Saved me lots of $. Thank u!
Awesome!! Glad it worked out for you.
If you are not going to do it yourself, I think a locksmith for this job is better than the dealer and cheaper too.
+I Fix Things Did you replace the 2 bolts that you used the wood boring bit? I didn't have to take mine out thank God.
+daflipboi4u I should have....I just replaced the same old one.
YAAAAAAAAAAA! That is fantastic! Congrats!!!
supertune supertune I have the same van with same problem. Can I still attempt this if I can’t get the key to position one?
So happy to see a women doing car things! Thanks for your video. Helped a lot!
+Anthony Pasquariello Thank you for your comment.
Anthony Pasquariello she looks more like a man, but still it does not matter.
fredy melendez ?
@@fredymelendez4773 I have decided to leave your comment up to show people what misogyny looks like.
Glad it helped
I am sooooo glad it helped!!
Thank you for your comment. Congrats!!
ive been driving my van for 3 months and have been noticing that my ignition switch was not cooperating, it sometimes came to the point of praying when me and my wife travelled to losangeles we got stock for about 10 minuites i tought it will never starts. so i totally had it and before contacting the dealer i went to youtube and saw this post and i tought i give it a shot. im not a tech kinda guy but i did it im so proud of my self . thaks for posting this video i hate spending my hard earned money to steallership.p.s. i ended up removing all the wafers the only draw back is you could pull the key out when your car is running but that doesnt bother me.
+RAY ALLEN Congrats!!!! I am sure I will end up having to pull out all the wafers one day as well. Thank you for the comment!!!
God bless you for sharing, the locksmith shop wanted $320.00 for the job and after a couple hours I was able to do it thanks again.
Fantastic!!! Congratulations.
My Honda Odessey 2003 🔑 switch won't butch, can I still replace it?
Just wanted to send you big thanks and blessings for helping me fix this problem on my 04 Honda Pilot. The key started sticking and then 2 days ago it would not turn in the cylinder at all. The only difficulty was the first roll pin but with someone else's advice it came out and the rest went smooth. ( drill down next to the pin and nick the pin at a 45 degree angle, insert small pointed awl or nail and pry up) . You have helped more people than you can imagine. If you live in Virginia I will bake you something nice. ♥️ B.
I am so glad that this helped. Thank you so much for the comment and the offer to bake for me. You are too kind. Your comment is thanks enough.
2004 Odyssey. (note she was lucky with the roll pin I spent most of my time on, It just fell out for her, wow. This is my 2 cents on this problem, hope it helps!)
Had the same problem and fixed this for $1. Need to be comfortable with working on cars and willing to learn a bit about lock mechanism. Here is a synopsis:
Key will not turn in ignition lock, wafer(s) inside lock cylinder are worn out.
1. Removed negative battery terminal (to prevent air bag issues)
2. Removed the steering column plastic shroud (three screws bottom
6. Used a scribe to scratch alignment marks so you put in back correctly
7. Removed the lock cylinder from the housing. Note there is a roll pin that you have to drill a 45 degree hold with about 1/16” drill bit and pry out with a sharp machinist scribe or awl. I could not get it out any other way (pry method did not work)
8. The cylinder then came out and there is then a second roll pin, you can punch out easily with a 1/32 pin punch
Way to go.....great synopsis, thank you!!
Me too!
Still havent got in out yet😖
Thank you for this video. 7 years later it's still helping people. I just fixed my wife's odyssey for zero dollars!
I’m having this exact problem with my mini van. Your video encouraged me not to give up and freak out. God Bless You. 😃✌️
You can do this!!!
Last night the key in my 2005 Honda accord would not turn over. We have been having some issues with it lately but last night was the first time we could not get it started. I used this video on my I phone to get it started. Great video, very helpful.
+shaun maher So glad to be of help. Let me know how it goes.
I was wondering if that would work! . . thanks!!
Did it work indefinitely!?
Excellent video. Had mine lock up today and the mechanic quoted me $500 to fix it. Limped it home and pulled the mechanism apart to find that one of the wafers was pretty roughed up and there were gouges inside the cylinder. Not only that but three of my springs were down right missing! Anyway, got it put back together and working so I just wanted to say thanks.
I am so glad that this helped!
+Tim- Mary Oh My Gosh!! That is fantastic!! You are amazing.
👍🤣If i was rich, i would do that.
just fixed my ignition for the same car.
Sweet! So glad it helped out. Thank you for the comment.
You are a lifesaver. Had to buy a roll pin punch set, like a needed an excuse, but followed your vid to a tee. Now my wife can still get to work while I get replacement parts. God love ya.
I LOVE having to get tools for a new job. Glad this helped. Bless you!!
Amazing demonstration! Completed this exact repair today after watching this yesterday (while waiting for my tow home). A perfect solution and the vehicle still is secure with programmed keys! Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for your comment!!
This video was exactly what I needed. Thank you for taking time to document and post!
I am sooooo glad it helped!
I am sooo very glad it helped!!
Thank you soooo much. I am glad to have been of help!!
Way to go!!!! Thank you for your comment.
You're a life saver! I did this fix without having to remove the whole assembly. $0 in cost!!!
Excellent! I am so glad this helped!!
Pin is factory drive in tight

Hey thank you so much for your great video. It was going to cost me about $500-700 to have the Honda dealership fix my problem. But I spent about $10 on a few tools and a fuse (which i blew because I didn't disconnect the battery first!) and now my problem is fixed. I would not have been able to do this without your video.
A few things I wanted to share to help others out:
1) you can buy the ignition cylinder yourself with a new key for about $150.
Brian Haufschild This is GREAT info. Thank you!!
Do you know what made the fuse blow ? I took the housing out of my civic and didn't disconnect the battery I'm wondering if I did the same
bill doe you would know if the fuse blew because when you turn the key everything would be dead and the car wouldn't start... it wouldn't even make any noise.
I am so very glad that this helped! Great first name by the way!!! (I am Karen too)
as an ASE certified tech and an Odyssey owner that just started experiencing this issue I'm glad i found this video because i was sure as shit gonna replace the whole unit. digging into it tomorrow after work because I'm about 99% certain my issue will be the same. thanks for doing the detective work for me.
I am glad I could help!!
You’re going to have to reprogram the key !
Thank you so much for this. Just fixed my 04 odyssey! Thank you again!!
Thank you so much!!! It took 5 to 15 mins to start everytime I had to go somewhere in 100 degree weather. Key would get stuck when trying to turn the car off. I did the exact same thing you did and it now works like new.
I am so very grateful this helped!! thank you for letting me know
I am truthfully saying thank you. This saved me. I didnt know what I was going to do. God Bless You.
Thank you so very much for your comment! You just made my day!!!!
Great video... Few things to point out: Make sure to remove the small springs when you remove the wafer or they can come loose and cause a jam; and, make sure to re-grease the cylinder housing before re-installing...
tomandsharonz OOps, I forgot to re-grease.....
@@ifixthings3431 how long has it lasted??=]
Thanks for the tutorial. Fixed it with hardly any swearing on my part. Those bolts are a bugger to get out. My guess is they break off at the top so they don't bend the steering column at the factory. I took the Dremel and cut channels in the bolts so I could use a flat head screwdriver to tighten them. I just made sure not to tighten them too much, but if I ever have to do this again it'll be easier to get them off. The plastic covers didn't cooperate when I put them back on, so I may have to do some taping. Oh well. She's an '02 with 245k miles on her. What's a little more tape?
I followed your instructions and it worked like a charm . Thank you!
Great to hear!

Thank you for that video I just got mine fix by watching your video.God Bless you
You're welcome!
I'd be scared to try, but it was great to see you taking apart and putting together with success :-)
Thank you so much !!! The dealer is really got us over the barrel. Thank you again you are awesome !!!!
Glad it helped!
Just did this after watching to my 2003 Honda Odyssey started right up was very helpful thank you didn't know what to do
Thank you, worked great. I dropped the screw that clamps the lock cylinder to the steering column (and could not find it) , so replaced them both with Allen wrench top “ SOCKET CAP SCREW M8-1.25 X 16mm metric plain” from home depot , easier to get in than original
So glad this helped and thanks for the tip!!
Thank you! I just did this repair on my wife's 04 Oddy right in time for Mother's Day!

Thanks for the video. I’m about to work on the lock cylinder now, it got it. I’m gonna put slots on the heads of the knock off/security screws. So I can just use a slotted head screw driver to tighten them back. 👍
Great idea! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much without u and the Lord I don't think I could of done it
Anthony Salazar Thank you for your encouragement!
I Fix Things I changed the swicht and won't start you think is the key or a fuse
david ernesto Are you using the same key that you were using before you put in the new cylinder? If you change the switch and get a new key, you have to have the new key flashed with the onboard computer. Otherwise it wont work. That is why I did not want to put in a new cylinder. I did not want the trouble of having to go to the dealership. Also make sure you plugged everything back in.
Y’all make taking off the security bolts seem so easy
I been trying to take them off for two days 😩😩😩
l want say thank you for your video. I did this to my 2006 Honda Pilot with 190,000 miles an it turn out great. Save myself 370.00 dollars.
Congrats!!! Thank you for your comment.
wow so much work my cylinder is jam I have to replace it with a new ignition. I couldn't do all that I just replace it. Very thorough you know alot mam.
We did it!!!thank you so much you just saved us $500!!💪💪
+Elizabeth Darcy YAAAAA! Congrats. I am so glad to help folks save money.
Ty u saved me some money. Totally impressed u did this yourself. 👏
Great tip!! thank you!!
Thanks for this! I took all the wafers out because they just kept sticking. It works fine but the key slips right out.
I ended up going back in and taking all the wafers out as well. And the key slips out like it’s stuck in butter. LOL. Everything still works otherwise.
If you've started the car, does it shut off or continue running if the key slips out? (I have an '01)
@@kevinjfeeney77 Mine keeps running
i left the last wafer in. closest to tip of key. its the one that locks the key in place

I am sooo glad that this helped!!! Thank you for your comment
+LOST FOUND Great advice....thank you.
Not much of a need for new wafers. With the chip in the key there ismt much of a need for them.
I loved watching this video. I have same car. Same issue. But just really smiled while watching this! And now I will try do everything you just did. 🙃

Great job! I will definitely keep this in mind. Since I own 2 Honda odysseys. Thanks for sharing
Thanks to you my 03 Odyssey is starting again!!
So glad I was able to help!
Oddly I have never had any problems with the key working in the door, even though it was locking up in the ignition. Best of luck fixing it!
Lady I don't know you but you were absolutely right on the process thanks IE dealership wants $600 to replace and Auto Parts want to 54 replace this took me 30 minutes and was free including the tools I already have
So glad this helped!!!
+I Fix Things i'm gonna try this instead
You are a remarkable woman.....great job!
Thanks a lot for this video, I just did this on an '03 Accord. Will probably have to buy the wafer kit at some point, but thanks a lot for the video.
thank you so much for your comment

+April Nelson Thank you so much!! That means the world to me.
