It's less like culling them and more like retiring them, which I think is really great; every video of yours I watch I gain more respect for you.
I know ,I dont have the heart to kill them and I still like to look at them anyways ,Thank you Sally :)
It's a donkey sanctuary for shrimp
@@MarksShrimpTanks I got my first shrimp with intention to breed as food. Not a single shrimp was used as food lol, they are too awesome and didnt have the heart to pop them into tank to become dinner.
It reminded me of people I met with pet rats who also intended to breed for reptile feed...didnt happen lol. Needless to say that when I had chance to get cattle to raise up for beef....nope...knew I couldnt be trusted and Id end up with BIG pets lol.
Culling in the shrimp world rarely involves "killing them", most shrimp folks have a "cull tank" to separate them, and sell them on Craigslist for cheap for people who want them in their community tank. Some of my favorite shrimp have come from misc cull purchases from people online.
Awe that's good to know that you still value the Culls life. Thank you
I can not describe how much I love your shrimp room!
Thank you Alen :)
There are a lot of shrimp folk here with good hearts. I grew up farming. Almost every animal we raised ended up on a plate. Now in my older years, killing does not come so easy anymore. You folks are an inspiration.
Mark, as usual, very interesting video. Thank you for sharing. I am learning a lot with your videos. I would like to take a look on the "retirement" tank, I bet you will have interesting beauties there.
I have found kingkongs ect in there :D
great walk through on this subject Mark thx
Thank you :)
That culling tank is very pretty. I love it
Thank you Alex merry christmas :)
Ready to finally do some culling
First time i have seen a video on what to look for when culling, wish i had started with higher grade crs but its a challenge to improve what i have. good stuff as always mark.
You know I didnt know if I should change the title of the video because technically I am not culling the shrimp ,culling really means killing ..its good to see nobody has taken me up on it yet :D
You’re a welcomed sight on UA-cam.
I enjoyed watching, thank you for sharing!
Very interesting and informative as always Mark, keeps me going on all the information I always pause the video just to take a look at my tank. But I've got nothing worth taking about at the moment just put 5 yellow cherry ones in my new tank. Thank you so much Mark for your help
We all started somewhere Anita ,in the future if you want the more fancy shrimp just ask in the facebook group because you will be surprised at how many people can help you that way :)
Marks Shrimp Tanks thank you for that Mark 🤗🤗😀
Thanks Mark great video! I hope you can make one about substrate health soon. In the past I kept getting bacterial infection because I overlooked this.
Written it down :)
Could you tell us more about the other tank you put the culls in?
I would love to see a video on cleaning your tank substrate.
Love your videos!
You dont clean shrimp tank substrates well I dont anyway ,it shortens the life of active substrates apparently .
Very informative video Mark. I really enjoy your videos. I learn something from you at each one. My shrimp tank is beginning to breed quite well. although before i started doing the cherry red shrimp I had no idea about the coloring, the grading or culling. I have a low grade of cherry reds but they did have a shrimplet or two that came out bright vibrant red. I am hoping to eventually get more and more of those. Again Thank you for all our information.
Sir, I like your sentiment regarding culling
Your heart is huge my man...I can’t kill them either...they live with my crooked female guppies...
I think its an age thing hahaha
hey Mark, big fan of yours! why do you keep the goldens with blue bolts if you dont mind me asking and also what can you do to prevent cross contamination from 2 different colonies?
Excellent as always ☺️
Thank you Hopart :)
Hey Mark, why do you put the golden bees with the bolts?
Breeding culls for new variants? Can somebody do a project on that, maybe a video?
what is the bark that you have in the tank and how did you make the moss poles ?
the bark is cinnomen and the poles is a plant called subwassertang, i will link you to a couple of videos that explain things better. ua-cam.com/video/t39ZQRhGiOg/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/7PnwRdCPoZY/v-deo.html
thanks again Mark
Youre becoming a master of shrimpkeeping I see Damion :)
Man ! I RESPECT and LOVE YOUR ATTITUDE .
I hope we could find more people like you that cares for even useless species!
Please take us a tour of this gorgeous tank , i have noticed that u have removed the moving bed filter aswel , what was the reason and does THIS TANK have a canister filter or its Just a water pomp for the waterfall ? Please talk a little about ur setup ,we are so interested of your last updates and thoughts 🙏🙏🙏
Cheers
I removed the moving filter bed along time ago because we had a power cut and to my horror it got filled with baby shrimp ,they climbed in all the tiny holes ..soon as I seen this I removed the plugs from the power on that section and released them all.
and yes it does have a canister filter which I have talked about before but I understand people miss things :D
Good work on the video's. I have a lot of interesting things that I want to incorporate into future set ups.
Excellent ,I hope you record it :)
How do you keep different caridina in the same tank? Won't they interbreed?
yes they will interbreed
Hey Mark great videos, as a relative newbie to the shrimp keeping sport I'm finding your content informative and compelling watching, keep up the good work! Quick question regarding the net you use in this vid.... I've never seen a rigid net like that before but it looks way better than the flappy floppy thing I currently own. What is it and where can I get one?
Lots of them everywhere my friend I have them in my store, link in about section, you can also ghet them on ebay and amazon
Do you ever go through the cull tank and bring out any good shrimp back to your breeding tanks?
Yes I have done before, sometimes I get like kingkongs and panda in there :)
At what age do you cull? I heard some don’t really develop color until they’re a bit older. Also do you cull more males or females?
Добрый день. Скажите кора какого дерева используются в ваших аквариумах с криветками?
oak leaves, almond leaves, walnut leaves.
Great info
Very interesting video 👌
Was waiting for a vid like this :) nice! ! !
I am going to change your name to The Winner lol hows it going ?
Good good :) except for the blue dreams... another one dead... I'm like 100% sure it's not the water, I'm thinking i kinda got ripped off with the ages of the shrimp because I got them pretty huge and I think they are dying of old age... haven't seen a single berried after a month and basicly only seeing 2 or 3 swimming around anymore. So I think I'll soon have an empty tank. BUT! I will be able to use that one for culling my red cherries and keeping my most red cherries in there ^^...and the other one to keep the rest. Makes more sence maybe with having 2 tanks. The red cherries are doing awesome. they keep breeding, can't stop them lol! maybe there was something those leaves you sent me xD...
I realise this is an old video but hoping you still read comments from it! I’ve been watching your channel for a while now...super informative! Regarding culls....is it best to let the colony establish for a while and then start or??? I’ve got a few crystal blacks that are dull/brown looking but all of the shrimp are very young. Is it best to let them all grow to maturity or set up another tank and let the culls live out in there?
its best to do it alot as much as you can , I get very lazy doing it
Marks Shrimp Tanks great thank you! Looks like I’ll be setting up another tank or two then in the near future! Cheers
Like this vid mark...
Can i ask you? For low grade crs (in term of depth of color) can they be treated using foods which enhance color to raise their depth of color? Or is it just purely caused by gen that we cannot fix it?
Good food will always help them but I wouldnt expect miracles :)
Hey Mark. Apologies if you’ve mentioned this somewhere already, but how do you determine whether the plastic tubs you use for cull tanks are shrimp safe? I’m looking to copy the idea, but don’t want to poison my culls with some leeching chemical. Cheers
To be honest I dont know if it is 100% safe I have used these tubs before to raise goldfish from eggs and the shrimp in that tub do breed.
Hey Mark, I find remineralizing the water used up quote a lot of my salty bee shrimp , any other ways that we could increase the gh and kh instead of purchasing these products ?
Hello sir ,in my neo tanks Ive been using calcium blocks ,if you mean is there an alternative for the gh Buffer you can make your own buffer much cheaper ...all the basic buffer caridina is is calcium sulfate and magnesium sulfate ,if you wanted to make more for Neos you could add some calcium bicarbonate for the kh level ....i have made my own but I have never done a video on it because I dont want people buying the wrong stuff and killing all there shrimp :D
Thanks a lot for sharing Mark! I just want to double check if calcium sulfate is CaSO4 and magnesium sulfate is MgSO4 ? Lastly I want to ask what's the differences of bicarbonate and carbonate ? or maybe do you have the scientific name for it because I couldn't search any bicarbonate on the internet from where I live
Good stuff!
Thank you :)
What is k14 Mark ? And also why do you want your goldens with your blue bolts ?
K14 are smiley faced SSSS grade shrimp ..mines are not that great quality but I get some really beautiful shrimp from them ,I think the k14 term comes from a German grading system.
I also keep Goldens with the bluebolts because I dont have so many blue bolts yet so they will make mischlings and then more bluebolts after f2 :)
Do you ever take them out of the cull tank and put them back into the breeding tanks?
Oh yes,I sometimes get kingkongs babys ect in that tank.
very cool vid
Thank you :)
I had 8 shrimp and they had babies so now there's a bunch of teen shrimp in my tank I'm worried about genetic diversity with there only being 8 to begin with and I'd say well over 50 now so before they start breeding breeding how do I keep my shrimp healthy while culling which takes out even more genetic diversity? Am I just over thinking it I really want this colony to last as long as I can get them too
yes you are over thinking, I was once told to add new genetics every 6 months but I dont know anybody that actually does this.
@MarksShrimpTanks ill take your word for it then thanks
great vid once more keep on shrimping
Thank you Wan :)
If you do sell outside of Norway I am extremely interested in ordering some from you. Just wanted to know if you would sell from your cull shrimp? I'm not looking for super high grade shrimp but want some that aren't just cherry shrimps.
No I dont sell outside of Norway ..the shrimp would be dead by the time anyone got them, I dont even sell plants at this time of year
@@MarksShrimpTanks I wouldn't want them shipped this time of the year even in the same country, it's way too cold I was referring to late spring/early summer, if you did intend to sell outside of Norway. If even at that time of year you don't I completely understand. I am looking at getting some plants from you in a few months either way.
The ad I got on this video was a shrimp devainer and peeler. 😂😂😂😂yum
no hahahahahaha ,before I used to get Mr Bean eating shrimp in the related section which was always weird lol
Hey Mark, aren't you growing some riccia fluitans on a Styrofoam in your shrimp tank? You should do an update video on it...^_^
No its not Riccia its just a hitcher piece of water sprite :D
Mark what do you mean by K14?
Its a German grading term for ssss grade smiley head shrimp :)
Marks Shrimp Tanks Oh very informative as usual thank you very much.
wow
love you tanks plz adopt me!
theAmdisen you are here by adopted to the shrimpfam :D
At what age do you start culling shrimp? I am new to the aquarium hobby. I am dealing with Red Cherry Shrimp. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Hello Sir, I move them out when they are pretty small ,like half a cm :)
Notification squad!!!!!!!!!
What I have a notification squad now lol
Love the shrimp and of course you wouldn't hurt them you send them to a farm lol
Do you ever get any interesting babies in the retirement tub ??
yes I have had kingkongs and pandas , blue bolts etc
Tham ppl should sell them as starter shrimp :P just charge for time to ship/items used to be shipped and shipping
Its a catch 22 with this type of thing I dont want to flood the market with inferior shrimp.
I feed my pulled shrimp to my puffer
Shrimp racism 😂
hey mark i would really appreciate if you could give he the shrimp u dont want since i cannot afford she in my country and i really want to get into the shrimp hobby i will pay for the shipping if needed thanks ;D would prefer neocaradinas
hello I dont ship shrimp at all right now its winter in Norway and I am not sure if I will be shipping shrimp at all this year .
@@MarksShrimpTanks oh but if you are shipping them next year pls let me know i m ready to pay for my shipping thanks for replying
Hi
Hello :)
I got 12 Sakuras and only after all 5 of my females are berried do I realize one male is more clear then the all the other males. Since I got them as juveniles, the colors were not obvious for a few weeks. I just hope hes not the baby daddy of any of my females. He may degrade my colony. But I dont have another tank for him and I dont want to kill him soo...getting what I get. I will love them all anyway. I will consider a cull tank in the future and let them do their thing! Lol
yeah he would be classed as a cull, in my room those types go in the cull tub.
I feed them to my bluegill.
i honestly dont understand why people kill their "culls", so many people on facebook pages will take them off your hands and the amount of people is see with poor grade shrimp and still loving them proudly shows there is a market and some people just dont care
to be honest i think its all down to pride in the breeder they see it as giving there work out for free and would rather just kill them or live feed them to fish calling it the circle of life
well my culling become turtle food...................
same
did anyone else click this video because they thought it said curling
internetfiles who in their right mind wants to watch curling videos
korzer lol, I've seen my shrimp and crawfish curl, so I was just wondering what that behavior means
First!! Haha!
hahaha
I always say if you need to cull shrimp please buy something that will eat and enjoy them. At least that way you aren't just wasting them. My angelfish get so fat and colorful from eating my culled shrimps. It really makes their red/orange pop. And they go absolutely crazy for them, which always makes me feel better about it.
I dont kill them, they go to live in the large crayfish tub .
@@MarksShrimpTanks I know, I'm saying to people who do kill them. Don't be wasteful, they make great treats.
Ouh....i see...haha^_^...sorry
