  • Robert Evan's Tonalist rallied late to edge Commissioner to win the June 7 Belmont Stakes (gr. I). California Chrome, bidding for the Triple Crown, finished in a dead-heat for fourth with Wicked Strong behind Medal Count.
The 1 1/2-mile distance of the Belmont at Belmont Park has been "heartbreak highway" for 3-year-olds since Affirmed last won the Triple Crown 36 years ago in 1978.
The time for the 12 furlongs was 2:28.52. Tonalist, a son of Tapit --Settling Mist, by Pleasant Colony, was bred in Kentucky by Woodslane Farm.
WinStar Farm's Commissioner went for the early lead from post 8 and was able to dictate the early pace while being tracked by General a Rod, Tonalist, and California Chrome, who took a position inside behind the leaders. The early fractions were mild: :24.06 for the opening quarter-mile and :48.52 for the half-mile.

My favorite thing is that one year later we not only got a triple crown winner. But all the horses that ran in this year's Belmont either skipped the Preakness or a new shooter. The only horse than ran in all three races was American Pharoah. The triple crown is suppose to be hard to win, that's what makes it so magical.

Sadly, this was the final Belmont Stakes of my fathers life. He was a huge fan of the ponies. He had encyclopedic knowledge of the ponies, especially Belmont Park. Even after suffering a stroke, he told me..Forget California Chrome..put your money on Tonalist. I walked out of Belmont Park that day with a wad of cash.. love and miss you dad.

Good point. That jacka$$ (if he had his way) would disqualify a Derby winner who skipped the Preakness because of, let's say, a slight stone bruise, from running in the Belmont. The hypothetical horse--like Hoist the Flag--might have been the two-year-old champion, undefeated in his Derby preps but injured. Tough luck. He's through.
Oddly enough, as he walked through the tunnel, not knowing his 15 minutes of fame would soon transmute into years of infamy, he didn't have any problems with the rules of eligibility for the Belmont because he had deluded himself he owned Man of War.

Steve Coburn should've had a chat with Bob Baffert before this race, for some tips on how to lose the TC graciously. "It was tough on him," Espinoza said, understandably; it's supposed to be. It's the Test of Champions, not the Test of Really Good Horses. All due respect to California Chrome - and Tonalist!

Susan Ouimette The Belmont is only the 'Test of the Champion' in terms of yesteryear. It's the only Grade 1, 12 furlong race on dirt in the US, and much like the track itself an anachronism.
I suspect what beat CC (and Silver Charm and Real Quiet) and portends to ruin American Pharoah's bid, is that final "monstrous" turn - three weeks apparently is not enough for trainers to prepare horses used to running on mostly mile ovals to negotiate Big Sandy's turn for home.

All the Triple Crown Champions took on ALL COMERS. Which means Secretariat and Seattle Slew and all the others ran against fresh horses in The Belmont.. Do the math..I was in the ring at Belmont that day..Tonalist was built and trained to run the long distances and big turns at Belmont. Christophe Clement trains horses to run these distances..this is why he was in all of my bets..and not for nothing come Breeders Cup classic day..you'll see when Chrome is finally put away for good..

You were in the ring that day, you saw the
horses, I did not. Tonalist has a very strong
confirmation, he was the strongest horse
in the Belmont, but Chrome has the heart
you can't take that away from him. The
great Citation, Secretariat, and Man O War
are once in a century horses. They have
not bred horses for stamina in a very long
time, just speed. This is why we do not
      have Triple Crown winners.

Frankly Speaking You better watch watch Secretariat taking the Triple Crown. Back in those days less horses ran. The ones who should run......ran. Not this many fresh horses. so back in those days the horses who entered the Derby, Preakness then the Belmont had the fight to challenge the horse going for the TC. NOW...money talks and it's all politics. AND Chrome was wounded by Matterhorn and Belmont video's showed that. WHY it wasn't questioned....who knows????

THANK YOU. seriously, so many Chromies got so butthurt over this and still want to say Chrome is perfect regardless. AP won the TC and the Grand Slam. CC didn't. He may be a good 4-year-old, but he didn't win. It's that simple. I seriously cannot WAIT until Chrome has to face Arrogate and Frosted in this year's BCC. His fans are the worst. They think that despite his highest Beyers at 113, he's the best horse to ever hit the track. Frankly, he just isn't.

    • @savagesweetheart90
      @savagesweetheart90 7 років тому

I loved when those Chromies wanted the rules to change. The Triple Crown has been around for 100+ years they're not going to change just because someone who hasn't owned a racehorse didn't get his way. I'm surprised Coburn didn't look up the Triple Crown, it's not like it's the 80s or mid 90s where Internet wasn't available. And also American Pharoah faced fresh horses in the Belmont and still won. As soon as Coburn opened his sore loser mouth, I wanted to throat punch him through the damn tv. I HATE these people who think they know everything about horse-racing because they only watch the Triple Crown and Breeder's Cup. I've been involved with horse-racing since I was 11 years old and it also helps that I have a friend who owns racehorses and travels everywhere with them, mostly to New York and she taught me the ins and outs of the sport. I watch every race even the small grade IIIs and also European racing. Frankel was a beast, I wished he could have come to the US for the Breeder's Cup. Now I follow his offspring and they are beasts on the track

Don't put your betting bankroll on Arrogate or Frosted, Siobie. I don't want you to lose your a*s*s*. The banged-up hoof from a gate incident derailed Chrome's Triple Crown, and you're probably not going to get a banged-up, worn-down, horse come Breeder's Cup day. Victor has said himself the hoof gash at the gate probably took away his best performance.

I can understand Colbruns frustration as well as the fans of having a horse win the first two races and then have all the hype and hoopla for the Belmont, only to have every's hopes get dashed again. There really is not any more that the racing officials at this point could do to increase the chances of a Triple Crown winner. Tightening the schedule or shortening the track? No guarantees!! It is a once in a life time achievement or opportunity. NFL team going 19-0? Albert Pujols hitting 100 homers in a season? A 16 seed winning national championship? An basketball team from Nigeria or Saudi Arabia winning the Olympic gold medal? Not impossible but very difficult and unlikely at this time!!

Break down the word embarrassed and you can find the word ass! Secretariat was the true equine athlete. Won the Belmont by 33 lengths, going about 40 MPH, and didn't break a sweat. He didn't need cropped to death either. Ron Turcotte knew how to handle his horse. He just let him run! If Chrome is related to Secretariat, it doesn't mean that he is Secretariat! Was hoping California Chrome will win but the winner totally deserved to win after being three wide all the way. Poor poor ride by the jockey of CC. injury in the soft tissure of his hoof where all the nerves are. Look at
the photos. Pain is a deterrent. I am becoming very suspicious of Belmont,
things are not adding up 13 horses win two legs in 36 years, no winner, it doesn't
make sense, I think this is an industry that sabotages itself and it's about
      greed and backdoor deals.

    • @gregb612

I agree with the first part Mildred. A lot of people pretend to know what they are talking about when in fact they wouldn't know a horse's mane from it's cannon or it's muzzle from it's dock... Victor learned from Pat Day, Gary Stevenson and Jerry Bailey, I'm almost certain had he known about or seen the hoof injury during the race he very well may have pulled him up! I know Steve Coburn would not have been happy, but to hell with him!
As far as the Belmont being cursed... It's the longest race with the shortest turn around. It's going to be hard! Remember, you're asking a horse for 3 miles at full speed in just 2 weeks. The only exception to that rule though was Secretariat! He won the Belmont by thirty-one lengths, in a race/track/world record time of 2:24.I swear that horse was 90% robot!

I m one of the few souls who are ardent fans of the US Triple Crown in India.California Chrome was a great horse and i wished it should have won the Triple crown on the day i got promoted. But it just didn't had enough gas to make it victorious till the finish line.
As for the owners are concerned sorry to say ,you are poor losers. Under similar circumstances Seattle Slew won the Triple Crown Undefeated(the only horse to do so) and Secretariat won it by 31 Lengths and sixteenth of a mile (the biggest ever in belmont). That's what makes these horses Stuff of Legends. Even as great a horse it is like Man O' War, it is sadly not a Triple Crown Champion.

bambimixyyumi I love Bayern too. Dortmund is like Bayern. BUT even Bayern has his day. He took 12th in the Preakness last year. So, even the best have their bad days. Tonalist was a fresh GREAT horse who ALMOST got beat by CC who was wounded and ran six straight races being a Contender for the Crown. CC was second/then third behind a GREAT FRESH horse. SO, how great IS that fresh great horse really? And General A Rod and Social Inclusion also ran six straight races, the Derby and Preakness AND Belmont and they pinned better than some of those FRESH GREAT horses too. Tells me......the facts say.......Chrome, Social Inclusion and General A Rod are REAL. The real deal. Being so tired they were more fit actually. CC was wounded but stayed ahead for a while , couldn't hold it. HE's a darn good athlete. AND deserved HOY, Champion 3 yr old and Champion Cal bred. Earned them with no candy given to him to make it sweet at all. I'm GLAD he's out of the USA.

I think he means that only the horse entered in all 3 races can go for the triple crown and the prize money. This sport is more expense than F1 racing and for a horse to be entered in one race and walk away with the biggest purse is kind of unfair to owners who enter into the 3 races. CRAP, I couldn't figure out WHY Chrome just didn't kick into gear..he wasn't tired and was fit and ready to.....then after the race we knew why. WOW, he got hurt BAD by the horse next to him coming out of the gate. He went UP under Chrome coming down on his leg cutting his tendon and then down on his foot taking off a bulb on his right foot. DAMN MATTERHORN. There's pictures that show it anyway AND pictures of CC's wounds. The poor horse tried hard but just couldn't kick into gear. AFTER the race Victor went to Visit Chrome and he couldn't even walk. Was lame. So he went to Harris Farm to heal for THREE months. Thanks to Matterhorns jockey. jerks. CRAP we would have had a Triple Crown winner. By a horse who sure deserved it. CRAP. Belmont slaughter is what I call it. Chrome is one fantabulous one in a life time horse. He had a target on his Cal Bred butt that whole year after he won the Derby.

RedBev59 You're the poster child for people who only see what they want to see and believe what they emotionally have to believe. Just in case you missed it the first time. (And by the way, had CC really lacerated his tendon--and it would have quite likely been the deep digital flexor--most likely which runs down to the distal phalanx (the coffin bone), even if a thoroughbred suffers the MILDEST of injuries to a tendon, you're looking at nine to 12 months for it to heal because there aren't enoough fibroblasts to keep up with repair and there is poor blood supply to tendons and ligaments which markedly prolong the repair of damaged tissue.
Now, given California Chrome was back in competition by September and given Art Sherman's own statement your claim that CC cut his tendon doesn't pass the laugh test.
Art Sherman, June 9th: ""He had a cut by his tendon where they hit him. That's what scared me the most. It wasn't deep; it was superficial. Gosh, that's the worst thing that can happen to a horse, hit his tendon. But we got lucky there. It just went down to the bottom of his foot, by his pastern."
"Wounded bad? The trainer described as superficial.
      "Nicked a tendon?"
No. Unless you know something Art Sherman didn't, never actually saw a performance horse with a tendon injury, or know something vets don't about what is frequently a catastophic, career ending injury, you're just blowing smoke.

shades of shergar in the english st leger, looked unbeatable but he wasn't

    • @johncarpenter4585
      @johncarpenter4585 10 років тому

      Shergar? Shergar?
Shergar won his debut (the Guardian Classic by 11); the Chester Vase by 12; the Epsom Derby by 10 lengths and the Irish Derby by four lengths--and he wone each race in a canter. He then beat older in the King George by an efforless four lengths.
California Chrome, on the other hand, felt the whip three times in the Preakness and held off a colt that had not won a Grade One race. The only people who thought Californa Chrome would be invincible in the Belmont believed that because they wanted to, not because he had established himself as a super horse as Shergar had beating exceptional opponents. He trounced Golden Fleece at Epsom. Golden Fleece went on to become the top-rated European horse of 1982. He also defeated Glint of Gold who won six Grooup 1 races in four countries and in the King George he beat the older Master Willie who had a timeform rating of 129 and who had won the Jockey Club Stakes, Benson and Hedges Stakes, Coronation Cup, and Coral Eclipse Stakes--each among the U.K.'s best races.
Had the 2014 Derby, Preakness, and Belmont been classified this year according to European standards, they would have been Grade 2 stakes at best, California Chrome faced only the winner of ONE grade one race. That almost defies probability. He finally had to take down two Grade 1 colts, Tonalist and Commisioner and he wasn't up to it; possibly at 1 1/8th miles but
not at a truly classic distance this early in the year.

    • @davidkent8606
      @davidkent8606 10 років тому

I agree Shergar was a true great, I think even Frankel would have had trouble beating him at his best. The point I was making is that if a true great can be beaten, then anyone can. I loved Shergar but I had a funny feeling that he would lose the St Leger.

ipowers2927 Only Americans and those who were alive in the 70's and still are consider Secretariat the best ever, and not even all of those. Jack Wilson who called charts both for Secretariat and Citation, unhestatingly answered, "Citation" when asked who was better.
Ask Europeans and they'll suggest Sea Bird, Brigadier Girard, Nijinsky, Ribot, Mill Reef, Frankel, Sir Ivor, or Shergar. Talk to Australians and they'll say "Phar Lap".
We Americans are so provincial sometimes. Such is our myopia Secretariat becomes the default best-ever even over Man of War, although both never faced each other. And to compound our sense of superiority we somehow believe our dirt racing is superior to Europe's grass racing.
Did you ever hear the name "Brigadier Gerard"? He was 17-18 and his only loss was to Mill Reef who was 12-14, and ran second in the other two.
Soo, I respectfully disagree that Secretariat was the best horse that ever lived since he was beaten by Prove Out, Onion, and Angle Light--none of whom were in Mill Reef's class

I wouldn't give a damn you brought up 50 horses from all over the world, they wouldn't be able to stand the test of time like Secretariat. Citation had times in the Preakness and Belmont that were slower then California Chrome's so miss me with Citation being better.

Coburn has a valid point, but as a purist myself you cant change the format now, or there will be an asterisk next to the winners name. by the way coburn was a sore loser because tonalist ran like everything but a coward.

Bill Ross AND the Ambush continues this year. We already got a heads up on WHAT fresh horses will be in the Belmont this year. AP will have one hell of a fight on his hands IF he wins the Preakness. If he doesn't win.....I would keep him out of the Belmont. Hell with it.

RedBev59 Frosted is duplicating Tonalist's Dick Move by skipping the Preakness so he can be fresh for the belmont. Frosted will be hard to beat....AP might be done.

Steve Coburn didn't say anything wrong. He is correct in what he is saying. Its not fair to the horses running all three races to bring in a fresh horse.

A great triple crown horse will beat any horse who opposes it…. Tired or not tired
