The _Die Like a Dog_ Quartet was one of the groups with which Brötz blazed a trail still visible and frequented today, four men, each with other projects of their own, who morphed into an entity, a tight, well-rehearsed ensemble that left a mark in our memory, enabling us to pinpoint pretty accurately the moment in time and the location where we were listening to them. Ruhe in Frieden, Peter Brötzmann, und *Danke für die Musik!*
ADD Trio, Anthony Braxton, Julius Hemphill (Dogon AD is great), late John Coltrane and Miles Davis, Alice Coltrane, Albert Ayler, Ornette Colemen, Cecil Taylor's groups, Sonny Sharrock, Robert Dick, Don Cherry, Larry Young, I'd also say for something a little less crazy but just as creative/exploratory on Blue Note (and elsewhere) Andrew Hill, Grachan Moncur III, Steve Lacy, Eric Dolpy - honestly though few are as OUT there as Brotzmann (besides Taylor) :)
for it was Albert Ayler who died like a dog found at the Congress St. pier in Brooklyn,N.Y. after reported missing last seen on the Staten Island Ferry. alas poor Albert we knew thee well but not enough to sustain the music.
He never plays the same "song" because there are no songs. Peter Brötzmann is what you'd call a "noise/experimental" improvising artist. He pretty much doesn't write songs. He improvises.
Some people call this noise as if that's a bad thing. Somebody called Brotz a random generator. If he could actually do such a thing that would be a great technique. People who go on about tradition, or go on about The Tradition, and then go & shit on stuff like this are just serving their gatekeeper function. But tradition is the thing to rip off ideas from, not worship.
What an unholy racket . Not what l define as Jazz and l love the music but to me this is the musical (sic) version of the emperors new clothes . People pretend to understand it but the reality is it is'nt real jazz just a form of music people kid themselves they enjoy and appreciate when as me and other Jazz fans regard it as an inpenetrable noise .
You can also listen to more recent saxophonists who i bet you will love if you love sonny, trane etc..Try Chris Potter,Joshua Redman, mark Turner,Steve Coleman,Kamashi Washington and Branford Marsalis. You can also listen to older ones who you haven't mentioned:Wayne Shorter,Bennie Maupin,Oliver Nelson,Stanley Turentine,Jan Garbarek,Ornete Coleman and Pharoah Sanders. You can also try to listen to Sam Rivers and Eric Dolphy, but they are a bit harder than the formentioned.
+konosxatz1 Thanks.I just love Eric Dolphy. His tone is really unique.I listened to Blues and the abstract truth and some ballads and man,it's just a shame he left us so early.
Yeah, the biggest early loss in jazz in my opinion (lee morgan follows). In my opinion he is the most unique of his time. His improvisation is sugar to my ears and flows like a river.I can't even imagine how much he could accomplish had he lived 10-20 years more. That's why i love Bennie Maupin,he is a bit like Eric but also very different.
Sorry, but I came up through the "energy era"....Coltrane, Pharoah,, Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler, Ornette Coleman......their "past the norm" explosions of sound and "past the notes" playing were emotional outreaches at the conclusion of their searching for expression. Their traditional training had developed their skills and the times they were in brought in the searching and the ultimate "outside" sounds. This one sided music by Brotzman is void of a foundation and its focus on only the explosion results in noise
Traditional Training and knowledge of the artform is the key to an extended Vocabulary - even if you go far beyond the Limits . Peter Brötzmann did not study the music enough , as Shepp , San ders , Mangelsdorff , Kuhn did - therefore having much richer results. Poor Peter sounds always the same : a musical random number generator . One minute of his playing in a loop are enough to cover all he did .
@@moletrane277 yeah i'm none of these. In fact far from any of these, really far. As you folks do not know me, dont judge me either based on a joke I made 8 years ago. My favorite free jazz performance on UA-cam!
imho Jazz Jamboree 1974 Brotzmann Q is better (with von Schlippenbach , Lovens and Kowald)

Serious question. If asked to play it again would they be able to play it the same way? Are there assigned notes to these pieces?
The answer to both questions is no. Every performance is entirely improvised. That's the whole point.
@@hecbiz75 Entirely? Then why give the piece a name if it is never played the same way? There is no sheet music for his pieces?

Learn to write proper sentences then write nonsense about something you don't understand
