    Clarification:
A stable version of the ICD-11 was released on 18 June 2018. In the video I said 2021 which is incorrect. The ICD-11 officially came into effect on 1 January 2022
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), is the 2013 update to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the taxonomic and diagnostic tool published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA).
In 2022, a revised version (DSM-5-TR) was published. A revision of DSM-5, titled DSM-5-TR, was published in March 2022, updating diagnostic criteria and ICD-10-CM codes.
Module 10: Psychopathology - Diagnosis and Classification of Mental Disorders
In this video, we dive deep into psychopathology, focusing on the diagnosis and classification of mental disorders. Psychopathology studies mental illnesses, their symptoms, causes, and treatment options, forming the basis of psychiatric diagnosis and clinical practice. Accurate diagnosis is essential in helping mental health professionals provide effective treatment and understand the patient's prognosis.
    The Role of Classification Systems
Two major classification systems guide diagnosis worldwide:
DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), mainly used in North America.
ICD (International Classification of Diseases), used globally, including Europe and Asia.
    DSM Overview
Published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), the DSM provides specific diagnostic criteria for over 200 mental disorders. The most recent edition, DSM-5, categorizes mental disorders like anxiety, mood disorders, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Its categorical approach ensures uniformity in diagnosing and helps professionals communicate across clinical settings.
    ICD Overview
Maintained by the World Health Organization (WHO), the ICD is a global tool for classifying diseases, including mental health conditions. The ICD-11, released in 2021, ensures that diagnoses consider cultural variations in symptoms and healthcare settings, making it particularly valuable in cross-cultural psychiatry.
    Challenges and Importance of Diagnosis
Accurately diagnosing mental disorders can be challenging due to overlapping symptoms and cultural differences in the expression of mental health issues. However, proper diagnosis helps guide effective treatment plans, whether through medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of both. Misdiagnosis can worsen a patient's condition and reduce their quality of life.
Both the DSM and ICD help clinicians systematically diagnose mental disorders, although they differ in their scope, approach, and cultural applicability.
By understanding these diagnostic systems, we gain insights into how mental health professionals worldwide standardize treatment and improve patient outcomes.
Stay tuned for more insights into the complex world of mental health!
