His teaching style reminds me a lot of what I saw from Joseph Gingold, Kavakos teacher. Very close to the music, always with the instrument in the hand and active participating in the music making. Very inspirational!

Gingold used to teach Kavakos??? Wow. Seems like it. Gingold was a brillant violinist. There is a funny anegdote involving him about upbow staccato. Perlman talks about that. Interesting to check out!

There is also an anecdote about when Kavakos went first time to Gingold. He listens to him and gives him a sheet music arrangement by Dounis, Moto Perpetuo Paganini in FINGERED OCTAVES. Kavakos just plays it right on the spot. Gingold says: "I truly have nothing to teach you more".

He is just a giant on the violin! So intense and with an technique so out of this world. And he is so consistent. Absolute role model!

Leonidas is SOOO amazing!!! Full of character and fire and incredible inspiration. Then he has ALL this repertoire, all the hardest places of all these many violin concertos and solo sonatas and Caprices are 100% available for him at the same time. And his fiddle playing is breathtaking in every aspect. What a miracle this man!
    Biggest thank you for sharing!!!

17:15 That moment resonated with me! I get distracted like that when I'm teaching a new student for the first time and I see they have a wonderful bow. A lucky student of mine (extremely wealthy) had a Eugene Sartory bow and when I asked him about it he shrugged and said "I dunno, it's some sort of European bow..." hahah.
I always think it's a shame when the violinists, usually students, don't quite know what they're playing on. Or they don't particularly care.
As a keen bow collector myself it always makes my heart sink when I have that conversation with them. My heart sank a little when Yukiko turned around at 17:22 ... someone of her top playing level not knowing what bow she's using! :/

@@OttoKuus Haha, I 'get' your comment. But really, this is just true of most students whose parents simply bought their violins, cases, bows, sheet music etc and the student doesn't really know what they're in possession of. It's a bit gut-wrenching really, at least for me.
Since I last posted - I recorded a piece of music in a studio with a [male] friend of a great friend and I saw their bow and said "Wow, this seems like the work of either C. Peccatte or perhaps a student of his!" .... Their response was "who's C Pekit?"
I almost collapsed, and yes, it turned out to be an early 1900's C. Peccatte violin bow (yet this person was using it on a viola).
They were using this bow on a cheap Jay Haide viola strung up with Piranito strings.....
      Again, I almost fainted.

17:19 - it's still funny to me that the girl thinks "Oh damn! What's WRONG with my bow!" but also she doesn't know who her bow is made by despite her being a great violinist! Every great violinist should know what violin (maker), bow, string etc they're playing on. It still shocks me that MANY of my fellow violinist/violists don't have a clue what the heck they are playing on. It's quite disappointing to be honest....

Every "problem" that any violinist has can be diagnosed as an issue with Intonation, Rhythm, or Sound. There really isn't anything else. Without great control of all three, even the simplest tune can sound uninteresting (or worse, awful.)
