I never knew that they would be legit this straightforward to make. Like, get the materials to have on hand and just make them to whatever dimensions I need whenever the next pleating project comes up. I'm sending you a virtual fruit basket.
I started out wantint to be a dress designer and I worked hard, my grandmother from the turn of the century showed me a lot, junior high and high school I learned a bit more, but then when I got to L.A. companies would hire me but before I knew it I was the sample model or some other thing. I don't think I was ever The Designer but more of a copy artist anyway. I have worked as an asistant to a designer. I come from Ohio and going to L.A. and stretching myself---but no one ever showed me a pleating board. I SIMPLY LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!!
Having a box-pleat board for ruffles is amazing! Doing box pleat by hand is tedious but I have a handmade board that 16" long and 4" wide for my trim making. I can plop it down on any surface and use an inner "stick" (card stock strips in my case) to help tick the fabric in on both before closing the box with the fabric incased before using my mini Cricut iron on the trim.
With this anazing tool, I might actually start doing something other than cartridge pleats! I'm absolutely loving the alternate pleating boards too. Pleats have always intimidated me, especially on thin and finnicky fabric they're a nightmare. But you made pleating that slippery fabric look like child's play with that pleating board! This is definitely going into my sewing arsenal. I may even make several boards for all occasions.

I hand washed a beautiful pleated Liberty wool skirt and tried to iron pleats back painstakingly, but it was not consistent. Now I kno how to fix this myself. Thank u so much!🙏🏻👍
Thank you, that was a really helpful video. While I am not yet at bustle gown stage, I can see such a board already being useful when it just comes to embellishing a plain modern short sleeved shirt... give the sleeves an interesting edge for example... So, yes, definitely inspired by this video.

I think that is a great alternative. I do think that the carpet glue will be less likely to shift than the interfacing as I have seen repeated pressing make it fail. As Jalea says "Be sure to let it cool completely!"

No issues at all. I think that’s one reason to use a carpet glue type glues, rather than a craft glue. I do have a vented ironing board rather than a solid one. Good question though :)

No, they don’t, I’m afraid. Dry cleaning might be better but I haven’t tried. These techniques are traditionally used on garments that aren’t really washed. You wouldn’t have to start from scratch as they are sewn in place, but all the pleats would need re-pressing.
if you want washable pleat, for, say, a dusty petticoat under a train, you can topstitch or edge stich partway down the pleat after it's ironed. It gets the nice regular pleating from the pleating board, and the stitching keeps it in place, mostly. I'm okay with some fluff in a dust ruffle, but you could use that stitching to re-iron without starting all over.
Great - will definitely try this ! One question please.... What types of fabrics are suitable to pleat this way? Some years ago I had fabric pleated for me and they said to only use synthetics ---I prefer wearing cottons and viscose type fabrics.
My general rule is if it will hold a crease it will hold a pleat. Cotton certainly works well. I’ve heard spraying the pleats with diluted white vinegar before pressing can help set them with natural fabrics, although I’ve not tried myself. Lots of testing so you know what temperature to use!

If it's polyester, the pleats are essentially permanent, including washing, unless you iron them out. If you're using a natural fiber, this won't change the structure of the fibers like it will with polyester, so the pleats will fall out over time and will come out if washed.

Top with space for a metal band and three pleats and room enough to go below the chin is is the usual. Would be of great help to those who are making them and giving them away to those who can not afford to buy. Would save a lot of time.

I think they were patented around 1900 in some form, but I'm not sure. I know couture houses use professional pleating companies who have all manner of complicated pleaters, but they also have massive steamers!

I don’t think tulle or chiffon would stay pleated. Organza might, but it depends what it’s made of. If it will hold a crease then you might be fine?

What if you're trying to pleat silk fabric and the pleats come out? What is a stitching method that you can use to make sure they stay down?
