I'll give you props, brother! You pick some great tunes. This one is relatively unknown to casual Styx fans, and yet it's one of their greatest songs! I'd also suggest Castle Walls from this album, Half Penny Two Penny from Paradise Theater, This Old Man from Crystal Ball... Styx had a ton of great singles, but their deep cuts are where they really shine! Keep up the good work ;) Actually, just deep dive the entire catalog!! They have some amazing tracks even to this day!! Look for the extended version of this song... it's only about a minute longer and I think it still fades out, but you get to hear a little more of the end solo ;)

i got to meet tommy shaw and james young at an album listening party at KLOS radio in los angeles many years ago. i told tommy that "man in the wilderness" helped me get through high school in the 70s. he said, "it still rings true". i'll never forget that moment.

I was 17 years old when this album dropped. I saw them shortly after it’s release and was completely blown away. Our concert hall only seated 7500 people so all concerts were close up. This tune in particular went from my left ear to my right the night I saw them and the break into the solo still gives me chills. I saw them many times from the Grand Illusion to Kilroy was Here. The Grand Illusion needs to be listened to from start to finish. Enjoy.
This song has such a haunting and atmospheric energy. Love the chord progression of E minor-D major-A minor that the song is built around. A multi-layered, deeply introspective masterpiece that really captures the greatness of Styx. Emotional, poignant and soul-stirring. Thank you for finally reacting to Styx again. I highly recommend my favorite Styx track "Queen of Spades" from the Pieces of Eight album for your next reaction. Majestic, menacing and one of their heaviest tracks.
I thought this song was mostly about a relative who served in Viet Nam (brother maybe) peppered with self reflection but what do I know? Just a child of the ‘70’s loving great music.☮️&💜

BTW, the song actually starts with the sound of the lighting of a match (like you'd do if you were in the wilderness: light a match to start to see your way in the darkness - a sound metaphor). StyxFan93 is usually good with the studio recordings, but this one missed that. I would also say that the lighting of one match could ignite a torch or even a bonfire - i.e. a small spark of insight can lead to a great fire of enlightenment. Also notice how much the counter-melody adds to this song. The controlled guitar solo is, of course, there too. I've seen them do this 3 times live in 2004, 2011(the whole Grand Illusion album at the Borgata music box), and last October in Vegas. I really enjoy when they mix up their setlists and pull out some old gems(consecutive nights differed by 7 songs from both their latest album and from days of old). OK, I'll make two suggestions for your next Styx songs: "Queen Of Spades", "Pieces Of Eight".
Saw Styx at least six times, from the Mr. Roboto tour onward. Never once played this emotive, layered, somewhat complex ballad/rocker. Tommy Shaw at the top of his game! I pray all the Profetas had a fruitful Lenten season. Love, love this channel always.
Haven't heard this in years. I always thought of them as a take it or leave it band, it was nice to hear them through fresh ears. They were played to death in those days but I can appreciate them a bit more now, nice guitar solo. Thanks Daniel 🎶
Thank you for your reaction. Tommy Shaw said his inspiration for the song came to him as he was being shot into becoming a superstar. He wanted to be excited and grateful but he was overcome with anxiety and even guilt because his brother had just been drafted into the Korean War by the government to be used as a pawn for the government's criminal schemes. He thought about how unfair it was that his fate was to become rich and famous and couldn't even share it with the person who matters most to him because his brother's fate was to be sent off to die some pointless war.

One of their 3 very best albums along with Crystal Ball and Equinox. I think "Castle Walls" may be their best track on this album though. Great choice though.

We listened to the whole album, or an album side, unless it was radio. Here is a video that has the last few songs on that album, which starts with Man In The Wilderness. By the way the entire concert is available which has this album, along with Pieces of Eight. Most everything has been said on what to do I've seen them three times. Twice with the original lineup. They were better with Dennis DeYoung though They're still playing and are still killer good "I'm a lonely sailor lost at sea. Drifting with the tide. Never quite knowing why" "Sometimes it makes no sense at all" It's a shame this didn't get more radio love.

I saw this concert right when it came out at The Chicago Theatre. Uh they kicked butt.
Styx’s touring with the band Kansas inspired Tommy Shaw to write ‘Man In The Wilderness’.
One of my favorite albums and songs. And they do it amazingly well live. Tommy's voice is as strong as ever.

Close to what Tommy said except his brother was sent off to the Vietnam War, not Korea.

Tommy wrote this after touring with Kansas... He was really influenced by Kansas's deep meaning lyrics..
