  • In attempting to fix my wife's 2012 Mercedes C250 Coupe, I ended up doing more damage. I accidentally knocked a freeze plug (aka expansion plug) into the engine!!! After a lot of fiddling, I finally removed it without tearing apart the engine. See below for links to parts used and more videos:

    That "plug" looks like a camshaft cap/cover. Not sure it is a freeze plug, I can be wrong.
    My 2012 ML350 blutec has something similar looking on front of the engine above the alternator, noticed small pool of oil on it. (Part number A0009976320).
    That's why I am saying, but it could be used for other purposes. Wondering how I am going to pull it out.
    Anyway Kudos for saving face with the wife!!! :)

    You did well in the end and that's all that matters. Home repairs can be stressful if there is a time issue.
    I think it's absolutely imperative to fix leaks like this because the oil will destroy plastic and rubber.

    You win some and you lose some. You won in the end and learned a valuable lesson along the way. I was changing pads and rotors on my 03 Cobra about 2 years ago, simple enough. I got a little too rough or in a rush and ended up tearing a brake piston boot. If not fixed it would mean dust/dirt in the brake caliper and brake failure. So I had to order parts and “rebuild” that brake caliper after hours of searching for “how to’s”. A couple of weeks later got it done, but it freaked me out. I’m still worried I screwed something up and my brake are going to fail. Lesson learned though. Slow and methodical, even on the simplest of tasks.

    Hey man, fellow C-class youtuber here. I wanna say great job on the entire job and great job on sticking through the hardships to avoid getting the engine torn apart. I've been in your situation a few times where a small or medium job becomes a major job because of something stupid I did. You live and you learn. It's funny I stumbled upon your video. I literally have the same leak on my alternator but i'm at about 80,000 miles on my c250. I'm going to just swap out the alternator while I'm down there. My question for you is, were you able to take the alternator out from up top without having to gain access from under the car? Is this doable all from up top? Thanks bro.

    • @CarFanatic
      @CarFanatic  5 років тому

      Thanks for the kind words. I'll be sure to check out your channel. You can pull the alternator from the top. There is a connector you have to pull from underneath but it's not too bad. I took off the alternator just by looking at it, which fortunately turned out okay. I think my oil leak actually came from where the intake meets the turbo inlet.

    just came across this now.. that plug you hit with the hammer or watever isnt for coolant its the timing chain tensioner cover plug and doesnt need to be there but its just there to keep the hole clean.

    If you or others have oil leaking onto the alternator, it’s most likely the turbo oil feed line. Mine was just the o-ring needing to be replaced.

      Many engines are similar, some parts might move around but I watch the videos to become familiar with problems, part locations, and ease/difficulty associated with doing things. I don't think I would go at a part with a hammer and freeze indicates water not oil if he even knew what the plug was. I am willing to risk a tow vs $1000 in labor and mark ups, and do something like replace a starter, alternator, belt, O2 sensor, etc myself. Unfortunately I only save if it happens close to home and I can limp home and a lot of time things like water pumps go out on a trip.

    Didn’t know the c300 had a timing belt vice chain. Oil leaks up front can be seals gone bad on cam sensor magnets

  • @user-mt9cx3mt4y

    there's not supposed to be oil at all in the air intake hose where you found the oil leaking out, it indicates the car has a bad crankcase rebreather valve and possibly even the oil drip pan the valve mounts onto so you didnt fix the problem, just sealed the oil leak off into the air hose that is not supposed to have oil in it either. The valve mentioned above (aka PCV valve on other vehicles) releases gas pressure built up in the crankcase under the pistons that leaks there from the combustion chamber around the piston rings. The valve recirculates the gas back into the air intake line that takes it back into the combustion chamber again. When the oil drip pan & rebreather or PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve doesnt work properly (doesnt close) anymore it will allow the engine oil from the crankcase to pass through and enter the air intake line and thats why you found the oil leaking there as its not supposed to be there in the first place

    Just like one of my "This will only take a few minutes, so I may as well do it now" repairs. I've yet to see an M-B that didn't leak something from somewhere...usually oil. But maybe the engineering, construction and quality control on yours will be better than on the ones I owned or on my friends' and neighbors'.

    • @CarFanatic
      @CarFanatic  6 років тому

      Haha I actually think the Mercedes dealership did not put the intake tube back on correctly whenever they replaced some sensor under warranty. So far, this Mercedes has been rock solid. Aside from my 911, the most trouble free car I've owned *knock on wood*

    • @wholeNwon
      @wholeNwon 6 років тому

      Well, perhaps you got the good one they made in 2012, but what are the odds? Of course, it's all relative. My company used to buy M-Bs for me and there was always a question of when I'd next be stranded, not whether. They were all maintained by the book at a motivated dealership. We got to know each other pretty well over the years! In fact, it was a M-B master tech who suggested that I consider Lexus. I did and the same LS400 has been my daily driver for 20 happy years! I'll venture a prediction that, when you eventually tire of dealing with German "engineering" and German "quality", you'll own at least one Lexus.

    • @CarFanatic

      Do you have any check engine lights? Could be a bad thermostat or blower motor. First recommendation is to see if there are any malfunction codes.

    • @jdmfreak92
      @jdmfreak92 4 роки тому +1

      yeah that's the timing chain tensioner cap. when doing the chain you would poke a hole in the center with a right angle pick, hook onto the metal part of the seal, and pull in out. Having oil residue on that intake seal is likely due to excessive crankcase pressure causing oil to work past the turbocharger seals onto the intake. Not something to be OVERLY concerned about it's pretty common.
