I have a Les Paul and a Strat that are both made of playwood (the bodies at least) and they sound exactly like the "real" wood ones. People just like to lambaste cheap guitars to justify their $2000+ waste of money.
In the 70’s into 80’s you had to be wary of cheap Stratocasters made of play wood. The give away was the way the sunburst were painted to hide the ply on the contours. I don’t know why they did it. There is plenty of affordable solid wood. No one does it anymore. The cheapest Amazon guitar is still going to be a playable solid wood guitar.
This is awesome. Please dont 6ake this as a putdown, but if you had tuned the guitar, proper setup , and ran it through some high end full size amps mimicking classic tones, this could've been the final nail in the coffin for tonewood snobs , when combined with Jim lills previous work. As it is, fantastic job. I just hate to see this missed opportunity. Perhaps a follow up. What first got me realizing that the material of the guitar, as long as its sufficiently sturdy, is of LITTLE importance is my first guitar is made of scrap wood with probably 5 or 6 pieces glued together. Dont know what species. POSSIBLY MY MOST RESONANT GUITAR IVE OWNED TO DATE PLAYED ACOUSTICALLY, AND GIVES INCREDIBLE TONES WITH THE UPGRADED PICKUPS I INSTALLED.
You did a great job with a material most people would be wary of. You proved a great concept, there's always something you can learn and change next time. Awesome job mate 👏
Great stuff, I really enjoyed this build. An interesting experiment indeed and a perfect entry for the #jurgscup . Great idea offering it up in return for a donation like that, but Chris! (smacks Chris’s legs) tune up before you demo! 😂
@@KingBespokeCreations yeah-i could have gone on all day, but i decided to show mercy. love ya, man. (i did all the like and subscribe stuff. unfortunately i don't have any money)
That looks absolutely great! 👍🏻But I think it would have been a good idea to put the guitar in tune before doing the demo 😂
😂 Never!
We also tried hallowed guitar and ukuleles using plywood (Philippines)
Due to shortage of solid wood (native wood or foreign) we first tried this the 70s(Philippines)

THE 2 X 3/4 INCH sandwich body I made --(1 -1/2 INCH thick -sounds great --no different to a solid body --and lighter too !
Must admit, I was impressed with the sound

Absolutely, but also plywood can sound great too! Just make a thing of it rather than try to hide it 👍
So 5 x 1/4 inch =1-1/4 inch thick body ---bit thin ---or did you add another MF board on top?--how do I go back to your original build ?
Check out the full build here ua-cam.com/play/PLWXclILDfqhfjhvAGe_fmWSWOi9riV8nq.html&si=HPvrloVbgPW-XadC
How many 3/4 inch pieces of plywood were sandwiched together ? Two pieces ?
The body walls were 5 layers of 1/4” if I remember rightly. You could go back and watch the build series from the start 😉
Very coo and inspireringl! Well done! 🤩
👍🙌

ES 355's are made of plywood - £7099 from Thomann
Wow, I need to charge more!

God bless brother!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Thankyou so much --really inspiring plywood build method ---you are the only one to respond to my questions --appreciate enormously!
I’m all for having a go, just to see!
The plywood is fun, but the winner for me is those inlays!
Oh I’ll definitely be doing that technique again!
Great experiment! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Steve, always prepared to go my own way!
Excellent stuff! Really clever idea and really skilful guitar building! Cheers Dave
Thanks Dave 👍
I call this a triumph! Bravo, good sir!
Thanks. You’re going to love the next build! 😉
❤I think it looks great 👍
Thank you 😊
For the body ?
Absolutely fantastic in every way. You took a lot of risks but your concept ended up working out beautifully. Favourite project of the year so far
Oh wow, I’ll take that! Thanks 👍

It’s probably more me not in tune than the guitar! 😂

are you familiar with tim sway? he came to my attention building guitars and basses from old sliding doors. you's two should talk.
He’s pretty good with alternative ideas too!
