Antony Fantano gave this a poor review but I believe he was too hasty. First, lets talk about the rhythms- which really grab you, have unique textures & are deftly meshed with a proto-future bass sound. Then there are the lyrics which on the surface may seem trite & simple but there is a clever, earnest narrative just brimming beneath the surface at work here. The vocals also are both uniquely affected & ethereally anguished all at once which really work well to highlight the artist’s pain & detachment. Zooming out there is the “Big Picture”: a meticulously woven together testament to pop-art not seen in decades. I really think Anthony should revisit this soon & maybe re-evaluate his initial misgivings. This is a 10/10. What do you think?
