I am 40 and am so happy with my skincare and the way my skin looks. I use a serum from Juice Beauty, day cream from Origins, Instant Facial from Alpha-H and Instant Detox Mask from Caudalie. However, I think what helps me most is the fact that I never lay out in the sun, I drink lots of water and I take collagen daily. 😊

I have normal / dry skin prone to dehydration in my early/mid 30’s
      Cream or balm cleanser
      Hado labo hyaluronic acid
Benton snail bee essence (my skin is prone to redness and this helps calm it).
      Timeless vitamin c serum
      The ordinary squalene oil
Holika holika good cera moisturising balm or kiehl’s ultra facial cream
La Roche posay anthelios 50+ sunscreen.
Sometimes Vaseline to trap more moisture in overnight when very dry.
Few times a week mandelic acid to exfoliate, tretonion for anti-aging.
Once a week Korean sheet mask for more moisture.

I've been loving the Corsx Low pH Morning Gel Cleanser for a nice, non-stripping cleanser that doesn't leave my skin feeling tight! Other products I love are the Biore Aqua Rich UV Sunscreen, Laneige's Waterbank Gel Moisturizer (I have oilier skin), Garnier's Waterproof Micellar Water (remove makeup), as well as Glossier's Solution (exfoliating skin perfector that has smoothed my skin, removed dead skin, reduced redness/acne scars, and made my pores smaller. honestly sounds too good to be true but I would say the downside is that it contains AHA, BHA, and PHA, so it can irritate some people's skin. for me, it has been fine though!)

Hey Allison, I am a 51 year old Indigenous Canadian and my Dermatologist told me the same thing: 3 things are a must: Retinol at night- at least 1%, Vitamin C in the morning, at least 20% and a sunscreen during the day. She said moisturizer is for comfort and ease of makeup application so wear what I like. Sounds like good advice shared by most Derms.

I have been using eye cream since I was 13 ( drug store L’Oréal) , I started using spf when I was 16 and I stopped getting tans when I turned 18. I started using retinol and vitamin C in my 40’s. I have never had crows feet or fine lines. My face wrinkles when I smile and frown but nothing permanent. In fact, I just started seeing fine lines on my forehead. I don’t look 20 but I don’t look 46 either. My advice. Start young. Start skin care young and stay out of the sun. I haven’t done fillers/ Botox etc.... and I don’t know if I will ever do it. I am a minimalist when it comes to preserving my looks. I would rather just age gracefully. I feel woman gain a different kind of beauty when they age.

Hi Allison! Esthetician here - also, your Vitamin A/ Retinol product is an exfoliant. Most people think that physical scrub is the only way to exfoliate their skin, but not true! The Vitamin A does a very good job, especially if it's a prescription. xx

Medicine student here. Vitamin A increases skin cell turnover. whereas an exfoliant removes layers of dead skin from the face. Flaking due to retinol will be due to irritation. Not because it is exfoliating the skin. Please don’t spread misconceptions :)

I love that you advised everyone to talk to the dermatologist. Much as I love skin care gurus videos, I still trust my dermatologist’s advice. Like you, majority of my skincare products are medical grade and derma approved. I use the Zein Obagi line and prescribed tretinoin too with Cerave facial wash and Keihl’s moisturiser (both no fuss cleanser and moisturiser). It was the only time my skin improved drastically after following the dermatologist’s advice ☺️

Switching from careless tanning and never wearing sunscreen to sunless tanning (just a few drops of Tan Luxe serum in my moisturizer/body lotion does the trick!) and wearing SPF 50 daily has been an absolute game changer for me! And because nothing protects the skin better than actual shade, I also made it my mission to find a sun hat that suited my style to wear on days where I spend more extended periods of time outside when the sun is at its peak, and now it's become a staple in my personal style. Better to prevent the problem than to have to attempt to treat it later, after all!

Great video! I also think you don’t need a 10 step routine skincare routine, just a few very good quality products that pack a punch. It might work out more expensive but so worth it longer term (and less make up needed!).
My usual routine is cleanse (double cleanse at night), vitamin c serum, hylauronic acid serum, eye cream, moisturizer and physical sunscreen (for the day). I don’t even think twice replenishing my products - I think I’ve grown out of trying new things for the sake of it.

Hey, I just wanted to mention - I started getting breakouts on my chin because I was overusing Vitamin C! The serum I was using made the skin on my cheeks and forehead look amaaaazing, but I was getting tiny pimples/milia (little white bumps) around my mouth and chin, and it took me ages to put two and two together that it was the Vitamin C!. I’m not sure if it’s the same for you, but it’s for sure worth looking into 🥰

Also I love how you suggested a simple moisturiser. So many seem ridiculously expensive for what they are, especially when the action happens with Serums or treatments before moisturiser. I’ve tried a few over the years, but frequently come back to the Body Shop vitamin e day cream. Simple, hydrating, not heavy and doesn’t irritate my skin. And only like £12.

Bless this video! I was also the girl who had a billion ineffective skin care products I used everyday piled on top of each other or I just washed my face cause I couldn’t be bothered doing so much everyday (especially when I travel). And this video showed me how simple skin care can be!
Now I basically have the same routine as you after I talked to my doctor. Because I also have combination skin, and had the exact same concerns about sun damage and anti aging. A little over a week of following this plan and I can already see and feel a difference in my skin.
The specific products I use now, that I learned about through this video, are the vitamin C serum, the Derma scrub, and the sunscreen. Everything else I use is pretty similar (Retinol, moisturizer, etc.) just different brands.
The only thing I added to my routine that isn’t in yours is a BHA serum twice a week at night in place of retinol (the same night that I use the derma scrub so it’s really effective) to help clean out blackheads & shrink my pores over time. But that’s just because I have really large pores.
Thank you so much for posting your video and reviewing the products you use, it helped me find exactly what I needed!

Love this video Allison! I agree that lots of us have bought skincare without doing our research and just hoped that they will produce miraculous effects for our skin. However, just in case you wanna try something new, you should try out chemical exfoliants instead of physical ones. They provide a much more thorough and even exfoliation whilst being more gentle as physical scrubs often causes micro-tears in our skin. You can look into AHAs and BHAs to see which you prefer for your skin type. I personally love Pixi's Glow Tonic

I used to use and recommend Maelove Glow Maker. Then I received a bottle that was amber colored and smelled bad. I sent the company an email asking for a replacement of the oxidized product I received. They tried telling me that it wasn’t oxidized, but it was just a different batch or manufacturer of ferulic acid. The serum was sticky and gross. It just sat on the skin all slimy and didn’t absorb at all. They wouldn’t send me a replacement. I threw that bottle in the trash, and I will never order from them again! I can’t do a product that’s inconsistent.

I have a pretty similar routine with less expensive products:
    1. Retinoid - I’m used the Peter Thomas Roth Retinol Fusion serum at night
    2. Vitamin C - currently using Melano CC but planning to switch to Maelove Glow Maker
    3. Sunscreen - various Korean sunscreens. Currently using Klairs Light Airy UV. I try to avoid octinoxate as it’s not reef safe.
    4. Cleanser. I double cleanse as I do wear makeup. Currently using either Bioderma or Banila co, followed by some kind of boring face wash.
    5. Exfoliant. I feel like retinol and vit C already provides some exfoliation, and I’m a bit weary of physical exfoliators like the one you mentioned. I have Paula’s choice BHA and the pixi glow tonic AHA but I would only use those infrequently on days I’m taking a break from retinol (about twice a week).

My skincare routine is very similar! The only difference in my routine is I use niacinimide serum instead of retinol because I'm working on reducing redness and sensitivity. Also, acne is highly linked to hormones, it's common to become prone to breakouts at different times throughout the lifespan as our hormone production changes. That could be a reason for your recent breakouts

Anyway, just curious, when you stopped using or decluttered all your old skincare/body products did you just toss them or use them up or give to friends? For moisturizers, Cerave has fantastic quality, affordable moisturizers (not a cruelty free brand though) and their hydrating face cleanser is the only cleanser I will use. I think they might be discontinuing it though:( I only use physical sunscreen since it does not irritate my eyes like chemical ones. I was using an entire range recommended by my dermatologist called zo skin by zein obagi but it is VERY expensive. It does work & I highly recommend the anti acne treatment pads however I won’t be repurchasing. Too expensive & I had a really unpleasant allergic reaction to the skin around my eyes when using a retinol. My doctor “allowed” me to take a break from it & then wanted me to go back on it. I tried & my eyes were nearly swollen shut. I ended up not going back to that dermatologist & then I moved so I would like to find a new doctor. For now I’m doing the basics, cleanse, moisturize & exfoliate. Also watching Dr Dray on UA-cam has made me feel better about skincare! Great video, everyone’s skincare is very unique!

To those who want to try a more affordable vitamin c product, I highly suggest trying The Ordinary L-ascorbic acid powder. As a powder, it's the most stable formula. Mix it with a simple hyaluronic acid serum/toner. I like the one from HadaLabo. 👍

If your really trying to not age your skin I would take out the scrub and substitute it with an AHA chemical exfoliant. AHA is really good for smoothing the complexion and preventing wrinkles, scrubs can be to embracive.

My skincare has been all over the place. I've bounced from different dermatologists to more natural products to celebrity endorsed products because I wasn't able to find anything that worked (yes, including stuff from dermatologists). FINALLY last year, I was like screw it and tried a couple things at Sephora. I have combination and sensitive skin. I found the Tatcha deep cleansing face wash works SO well on my skin every day twice a day (even though it's an exfoliator, its very mild) and it gets the dead skin and grime off my face. Every other day I use the Tatcha rice polish exfoliator in the evenings (holy crap if there is anything from my list of products to try, this is the one. Been using the same bottle for the last almost whole year and it'll probably last me till September. And if you use it less than me it'll easily last you two years, so it's well worth the price). I also use the Tatcha vitamin C serum. Then I use a Drunk Elephant face cream, though I'm not totally convinced this is worth the money so I'm looking for something cheaper. But those three Tatcha things... they have dome amazing things for my skin. I'm acne prone, scar prone, dark spot prone, have sensitive skin, and have combination skin. This WORKS.

This quarantine has really got me locked into getting my rountines down and forming the habit of following them religiously every morning and night so when this is all over, I'm able to go back to normal life with the best skincare regimen I can have!
In the morning, I wash my face, with the Aveeno Positively Radiant daily cleanser, in the shower. After I follow up with The Ordinary 23% Vitamin C suspension, then finish with the Aveeno Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30.
At night, I double cleanse, first with the Body Shop Chamomile Cleansing Balm and then with the Aveeno face wash. My serums I have on a rotating basis of a Lactic Acid/Glycolic Acid Blend and the Ordinary 2% Retinol in Squalane. Then I top either serum with the Derma-E DMEA Firming Moisturizer!
I stopped using eye cream when I finished the last one that I had, because my esthetician said that eye creams are basically not necessary, as long as you bring your moisturizer up far enough! So I figured why not save the money and put it into my actives?
Also, if you like the Derma-E exfoliator, I've been using the Goop Exfoliating Instant Facial and it seems like something that is very similar! I also found that the Aveeno 60 Second Facial is a dupe for the Goop one! If anyone out there has a hard time finding Derma-E!

The sunscreen comment may be true in the States, but may not be true for outside the US. I live in Korea, and I've found the chemical sunscreens to be MUCH better here than in the US, like this is the FIRST time in my life I can wear any kind of sunscreen that works and doesn't make me break out and smells decent (not like the beach or like medicine), and I've had issues with mineral sunscreens before too. The reason is the government regulations over chemicals between Korea (any many other parts of the world) compared to the US is much different. In Korea they are able to make chemical sunscreens using chemicals that work really well and don't irritate the skin, but those chemicals tend to not be allowed by the FDA regulations in the US. The best example of this is Liah Yoo's line Krave Beauty, she had to make 2 completely different formulations of her sunscreen, one for the US market and one for every place else, and she was really really pissed and devastated when she became aware of this, because she had been working for ages on development of a chemical sunscreen that all skin types could use, but it ended up using ingredients that were not FDA approved. Let me just say, the USFDA is not the end all of what is ok to use on your skin or not. I trust the regulations they have set here in Korea, So if they say a chemical is ok on the skin and yet the USFDA says it's not, I tend to follow the Korean regulations instead, actually, hahaha, I tend to follow Korean regulations on a lot of things lately, (Covid, ya hear, hahah)

Thanks for the video! What did your derm say about toners (if anything)?

    • @JoshHodgsonTV
      @JoshHodgsonTV 4 роки тому

My esthetician has always told me that toners are completely not necessary! They can be really great to add into your skincare routine if you have the extra money and want something nice! You can also use them very strategically with what ingredients or actives are in it, since it would be the first thing to touch your skin after cleansing! I don't use one regularly, but I do keep one around, that I use if my skin gets too dry between washing my face and putting on serums! Serums are always more affective and drive deeper into your skin when your skin is a little damp!
Sorry for the long winded answer! Just figured I'd share what I know!

It's great to see you use professional products, but none of them are addressing structural support in the skin like collagen and elastin. Everyone should be using a human growth factor (not plant growth factors as our skin receptors do not recognize them) for collagen stimulation. My favorite that I recommend is BioSerum Firm by Neocutis. It addresses collagen & Elastin (skin plumpness and skin firmness), provides hydration with Hyaluronic Acid, and it has shown results in as little as 6 days. Honestly a game changer.

Elta MD contains octinoxate, and there are many studies done which indicate toxicity and hormonal disruption. Not to mention that it's overpriced. Better choice of UV filters are Uvinul A Plus and Uvinul T 150, Tinosorb S, Tinosorb M etc. They don't penetrate skin barrier and don't have negative effects on human health. Those filters are also extremely photostable and don't release free radicals as many other filters do, including 'holy' mineral uv filters. Purito centella unscented sunscreen is an example of great and perfectly safe sunscreen! ❤

According to Dr dray and the budget dermatologist here on yt you should use a salicylic acid or glycolic cleanser before vit c to lower skin pH and make it easier for the vir c to absorb

  • @fhinama
    @fhinama 4 роки тому

Because vitamin c oxidizes so quickly ( meaning it turns yellow and will be ineffective) there is absolutely no reason to spend so much money on a product that will last you a couple months at the most, if stored in optimal conditions ie. away from sunlight and minimal air contamination. You can even buy the straight vitamin c powder and mix it with most any product and it will last you for a very long time for a very low price.

Hey Allison! Love your videos! Just a heads up: Vitamin serums tend to oxidize very quickly ... so upon opening it, place it in the fridge (also make sure the serum isnt already orange or it will be less effective). Thats why I use The Ordinary's L-ascorbic Acid powder and I mix it with a hydrating serum or moisturizer. this way I get the effects of Vitamin C without breaking the bank. Also, even though I love mechanical exfoliants alot ... they create micro tears in the skin which will cause skin damage in the future. so Chemical exfoliants are less harmful.

@@jetadorexx I use make up remover to clean my makeup off and then a water and my hands, then I dry with a washcloth. Yep he told me that. If you have sensitive skin at all or issues like rosacea, face washes with cause flare ups. It's interesting that people weren't using face washes and all these products at any time in history until the last 50 years ago. I read about a woman who said her skin was the best when she was in prison, because all she could wash her face with was water. I'll be curious to see how all these chemicals affect people's skin in 30 years.
