A superbly made for TV movie series. I take my hat off to all involved in the making of this TV series - a story that fully deserves to be told, of these brave, young female aviators, who laid down their lives in the fierce, blood-letting battles on the Russian fronts against the Nazis, in their fight for revenge and freedom - the freedoms we all enjoy today. May the stories and the lives, and loves of these heroic female aviators never be forgotten.
There are two documentary series called The Unknown War (kind of like a low rent The World at War) and Soviet Storm (like Battlefront) that are really awesome and give a very clear view from the Soviet prospective of WWII and just how horrific the eastern front was. I forgot where I heard it but one soldier said invading the USSR was like kicking over an anthill and pouring sugar on it.
These women pilots had incredible courage to fly these antiquated bombers with open cockpits. Many people know of Amelia Earhart, but so few know about the Night Witches. Their story is truly Homeric. This biplane bomber, playing a role similar to the British Fairey Swordfish torpedo bomber (which crippled the Bismark) shows what antiquated technology can achieve when used with imagination and pluck. But the Russian plane was flown by women, which puts it in a class and legend of its own.
Yeah but the reason these were such "shitty" planes was because they could stall and go completely silent which made them invisible in the night. They served their specific purpose. It wasn't just about using every plane available or sticking the women with crap planes. They had their ups and downs. They also had some more technical advantage where they could dodge German planes in certain situations better but that was less relevant.
@wavygr U-2 stands for "2nd training airplane" (: All of the pilots who were picked into Raskova's 587-9th regiments were heavily experienced with it because it was THE plane in flight clubs around USSR.
Tyrants will never be victorious over patriots! The "Witches" were heroes, the ones who struggle against overwhelming odds and are willing to sacrifice all for others. Happy Landings Ladies
This TV series prove that Russian women are exemplary brave aside from their stunning looks. They are really patriotic to mother Russia. I salute their bravery everytime I watch this. Thank you, STAR Media- from the Republic of the Philippines

Watched three full series. All wonderful. Nothing on US TV compels me to watch as much. The Attackers series I watched all of them in one setting, except for a few cups of tea in between. I think of nothing political watching these series, just the brave flying these ladies did in WW2 Great acting by all. Leans to much toward having such beautiful young lady pilots I feel. In any case, I shall watch more series. Good Work!
We obviously share this addiction… Russian soft power at its best ! Btw, there is (at least) a good book about Soviet women pilots in WW2, by Liouba Vinogradova. Among other qualities, the author often contrasts the official Soviet accounts with the real history which she was able to discover after the fall of the communist regime. Among others, while she describes Raskova as a brilliant leader and a living model for "her girls", she also reveals that she was an NKVD officer who, during the "Great Terror" before the war, had likely denounced many airmen/women, with the consequences you may imagine… Nobody's perfect.
Eternal glory to these women! May the memory of these girls last. They defended their homeland from the invasion of the Nazi beasts and brought death and destruction to these hordes, even at great risk. With courage and determination they gave a lesson in equality. Maximum respect!
The Russian women who sacrificed their lives to win the Nazis were 800,000 ... and of these the most heroic witches of the night ... THANKS FROM A WOMAN....FROM ITALY...grazie grazie grazie💞
I do not recall how I first learned of the Night Witches. Probably while searching information on some other project. I have been fascinated with their story for many years, and I am so happy that you posted these serials so more people can know of the heroism exhibited by these women. The article that I read said the German Military were very scared of them and had some not so polite names for them. They flew without fear, but with determination and purpose. I cannot wait to view the next episode and to learn more about them. Thank you for sharing their incredible story.
same, and I know things about WW2 that most people don't, down to what equipment used, how developed, statistics and so on. I'm 10% Russian from Baltics, this war has scars even where I live, the bombed monastery by German planes.
That's really comparing apples to oranges. Different conditions and equipment. The rule was that if the US airman could survive 25 bomber missions then he would be 'retired' from service. The WWII daylight bombing raids (the British bombed at night, the American 8th Airforce during the day) were especially deadly for crews. To quote one source: "During World War II, one in three [USA] airmen survived the air battle over Europe. The losses were extraordinary. The casualties suffered by the Eighth Air Force were about half of the U.S. Army Air Force's casualties (47,483 out of 115,332), including more than 26,000 dead." Bombing missions to Germany necessitated flying first over the German coastal defenses, then over German defenses around French and Belgian cities and then finally over German defenses around German cities. And then back home again. That's a whole lot of anti-aircraft fire and fighter interceptors to brave. The Russian "Night Swallows" were fortunate in not having to fly through massive anti-aircraft barrages, or having the bulk of the Luftwaffe to deal with. But they were still very, very brave and committed.
I saw all 8 episodes of this series. The intensity and suspense do build up throughout. This effort is a worthy homage to the heroic ladies of the 46th Taman Guard Regiment (ex-588th Night Bombing Regiment). The relentlessness of the Russian people and ability to resist under inhuman conditions is well illustrated. The issue of "Communist aparachik bigotry" is also brought up. The Great Patriotic War provides modern day Russia an extremely rich background for TV series and fascinating stories.Like all series, this one does have a few inaccuracies. The frontline commander of the regiment was not male but female. Her name was Yevdokya Bershanskaya (RIP). No one (to my knowledge) had come up with night vision goggles or other similar devices. Furthermore, I doubt anyone could have recognized his or her dead mother from the plane in the middle of a night flight (even if, indeed, the Po-2's were flying at tree top levels). Otherwise, great series which does a great job at awakening our curiosity about the Night Witches &/or Swallows.

They fought from before the meatgrinder of Stalingrad right up to the Battle for Berlin where Hitler, SS Nordland (mainly Norwegians) and other SS groups were cornered. The German troops were denied sleep night after night as the Night Witches flew close enough for the Germans to know they were coming and then cut their motors and gliding in silently (most bi-planes could glide well) would drop their bombs killing German troops and putting the fear of God into the rest so theyd stay nervously awake another night. There were female fighter pilots and a good story is about the "White Lily" from the flower painted on her Yak-3 fighter and who had shot down, I think, 10-11 planes of the Luftwaffe, an ace is 5 kills.
Terrific series. The girls are just gorgeous as well. A fitting tribute to those incredibly brave women. My n gauge model railway has many 1/144 scale aircraft "flying" above it. I read a paper back book about them back in 1980s when i was in U.S.Air force visiting then West Germany. It was well written . They were very brave women. There story should be made in a major motion pitcher. Russia was helping us fight Nazi Germany.
Nazi Germany was defeated by Russia. Russia fought with Germany from June 1941, the Anglo-Saxons landed in Nomandy in June 1944. The Nazis suffered 80% of human losses in battles with Russia. There is simply such an American tradition that at the end of the war it becomes allies of the victors ... So who helped whom to win the war?
Wonderful idea for a country to pay homage to its heroes and heroines. I wish we could do the same. I admire all these ladies 125th bomber, 587th fighter, and 46th guard. Ah... Konechno... A fashistyem smyert!
I love Russian movies, but I appreciate it lot more, when they have a German actors playing Germans. Because not only accents, pronunciation and hair styles are usually off key, but mannerism also. Interesting that Ukrainian movies (despite I have seen only few of them ) usually make both Soviet and German characters more authentic. For example this excellent short movie (that actually is supposed to be a trailer for some silly cell phone game) uses Ukrainian actors, but they are way more believable. ua-cam.com/video/eqeSGjCKV68/v-deo.html
That comrade major is envious of incredibly brave women pilots. He's a bureaucrat who has a one track mind. Bureaucrats belong in the rear with the gear and not in frontline units.
When World War II broke out, there were numerous women who had training as pilots and many immediately volunteered. While there were no formal restrictions on women serving in combat roles, their applications tended to be blocked, run into red tape, etc. for as long as possible in order to discourage the applicants[citation needed. Raskova is credited with using her personal connections with Joseph Stalin to convince the military to form three combat regiments of women. Following a speech by Raskova on 8 September 1941 calling for women pilots to be allowed to fight, Stalin on 8 October 1941 ordered the formation of the all female 221st Aviation Corps. Not only would the women be pilots, but also support staff and engineers. After their training, the Group's three regiments received their formal designations as follows:
Excellent movie. I can just imagine what what the Soviet era women went through in WW2. They were the bravest of heroism of the USSR. They just as beautiful as they were brave.✌
A great alternative series on how these women fought the Nazis with courage & determination, far better than any American glory hunting films with their Hollywood propaganda. Thank you for English subtitles 👍
I Can definitely Say These Are Better Than ANYTHING HOLLYWEIRD HAS MADE IN A LONG LONG TIME , UTS NOTHING BUT GARBAGE NOW , THESE ARE WORTH THE WATCH ,,even though I have to read the text ,They're Great 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟👍‼️
It’s scary enough to be in these planes and to turn off the engine and glide and hope that the engine turns on again after you bomb the target. They didn’t get to wear parachutes due to the weight of the parachutes so if the plane was going to go down they went with the plane. These planes also flew at less than 100mph and the German planes could fly over 400mph. That’s also very scary. These women flew a lot of missions in a single night and only 30 or so planes were lost. They flew way more missions than men usually did!
Oh damn I forgot that they're flying around without a...cockpit cover! Just heads out in the air. I know they've got to fly low anyway, for bombing. Damn.

"They fought for their homeland" , Two Comrades Were Serving" - a film about the civil war, a fascinating story about a cameraman of an intelligent and commander from the people; "Admiral" 2008 civil war, real story. “The Ballad of a Soldier” is a military melodrama that was very popular in the USSR; “The Cranes Are Flying” is a tragic poignant story; If you love spy intellectual dialogue plot, then “Seventeen Moments of Spring” 12 episodes is for you. A Soviet agent in the highest echelon of the Third Reich in an attempt to interfere with the behind-the-scenes negotiations between the Germans and the Allies.
Russia's one of your best friends. I appreciate that. I'm Spanish and I'm sick of America's poisonous policy of imperialism, hence why I found some Russian bias right here.
While I greatly appreciate this series, and am enjoying watching it, there are MANY historical inaccuracies in this first episode. The 588 Night Bomber Regiment was 100% female, including the Commanding Officer, Ravdokia Rachkevich. Also, only two of the women were disciplined during the war - for dismantling a flare. They used the silk parachute of the flare to make themselves panties. The attack tactics they used is also not shown. The Night Witches were well known for their silent attacks. They would idle their engines, make their bombing run, then fire the engines back up to make their escape. All the Germans heard (besides explosions) during an attack was the slight whoosh of the planes, which reminded them of the sound of a witch's broom, thus the name nachthexen, or "Night Witches", which the women heard about and embraced.
I read once that during W.W.II the Russians had 800,000 women under arms. It's good their story is being told, however much within the limitations of a t.v. show.
This was a great series! I couldn't stop after one and had to cancel my plans and watch them all straight through... Does anyone know if the "Night Witches" could only fly when there was moonlight? I know they say they see in the dark "like cats" but really how did they do it if there was no moonlight?
Excellent first episode, cant wait to watch the rest. My question is how the hell did they keep those engines from freezing solid. I lived in Anchorage Alaska and if you parked outside in winter you had to plug the engine in just to keep it warm overnight. They didn't have plugins or braziers or anything under the engine ?????
In one book once read how the Germans during the war "questioned" our prisoners as we cook and fly in The Russian winter. So here is the answer our of captured, plunged in shock pedantic until instructions and technically educated Germans. After turning off the engine, when the oil has already started to cool down, the oil tank was filled with gasoline and the engine then scrolled several times. The viscosity of the oil fell, and then the engine just started " on the cold." with increasing temperature gasoline evaporated. And aviation guns, which were cleaned from freezing grease in the cold, just lowered into the trough with almost boiling water to drive the lubricant, then wiped and flew "dry". But then there was a war, the life of combat units counted several departures... was justified.....(с)
Hello and many thanks for your answer. The gas in the oil makes sense. I remember my dad telling me that after the war had ended he was stationed during the winter in northern Germany and they used to keep small fires going under the Half Track engines to stop them freezing overnight. Thanks again, take care.
@@TarHeelBrit That's the way Russians start the engines in the north to this day, because there is no other option if you stuck in the middle of nowhere in temperatures below -30°C
Hi, watch more WWII movies on my channel, more to follow. P.S.IN August of 1944 Zhenya is present too. Just a popular name for both men and women. Yevgeniy = Zhenya and Yevgenia = Zhenia.
Pilots will suspect the flyers yelling to communicate in the air is a bit too creative. It's normally impossible to yell over the noise in an open plane. Even so this is good drama and I enjoyed all the parts. A bit of inaccuracy is excusable for a watchable story based on real heroic people and real events.
The Soviets actually hated the PSSGS with the barrell magazines, they had a common fault on jamming, later on they developed clip magazines which were far more reliable, the gun itself was a good machine gun
Hi, there was another great Russian ww2 series, I can't remember its name, it was about Nazi's rounding up Children, a Russian squad was trying to save Them, one of the fighters was looking for His own kids. If anyone knows it, please let Me know.

Interesting that Ukrainian movies (despite I have seen only few of them ) usually make both Soviet and German characters more authentic.
For example this excellent short movie (that actually is supposed to be a trailer for some silly cell phone game) uses Ukrainian actors, but they are way more believable.

That comrade major is envious of incredibly brave women pilots. He's a bureaucrat who has a one track mind. Bureaucrats belong in the rear with the gear and not in frontline units.
Oh no! I may be collaborating with the Russians! This looks GREAT and the story of this unit should be common knowledge to all.
This was SO GOOD 😊! I wish they would’ve been able to finish it!
Super good!
This was very good, thank you.
This looks like a very good series ..with a new slant on the war !..I look forward to episode 2 !
Thank you for sharing this wonderful movie 🎥❤

Yes good, But surely you didn't clicked on this video to just comment this right?
I really liked this . I watched it all .
Love the bi-planes! Great video!
Thank you for this video!
Excellent movie.
I can just imagine what what the Soviet era women went through in WW2.
They were the bravest of heroism of the USSR. They just as beautiful as they were brave.✌
This is a very well done show. Too bad they didn't make an English version. It would have done very well
Very good work Great acting great production
Great serie , thanks for posting it!
A great alternative series on how these women fought the Nazis with courage & determination, far better than any American glory hunting films with their Hollywood propaganda. Thank you for English subtitles 👍
Wow that was a good show , it should have a modern remake
Excellent Bravo ‼️‼️😁🤘🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟‼️
Thanks For The Awesome Uploads #StarMedia , Excellent ‼️
Супер! Спасибо! Очень понравилось!
Now that was pretty good. A little heavy on the drama and light on the fact but pretty good.
It is amazing that ww2 equipment is still in working order. Actual equipment is fantastic.
Nice! Spasiba
I love your movie, I want to dub it in Turkish. Of course, first of all, you need your permission.
Zdravo braćo i sestre :)
Iam lonly sudamerican in this place?
Salute from Peru таваришки )
Thank you for uploading this, I am enjoying this series. I doubt the original wwii pilots were all such underwear model material, however ;)
I Can definitely Say These Are Better Than ANYTHING HOLLYWEIRD HAS MADE IN A LONG LONG TIME , UTS NOTHING BUT GARBAGE NOW , THESE ARE WORTH THE WATCH ,,even though I have to read the text ,They're Great 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟👍‼️
It’s scary enough to be in these planes and to turn off the engine and glide and hope that the engine turns on again after you bomb the target.
Damn.

List for lovers of modern military Russian cinema with subs onUA-cam ( in some movies, sub must be enabled in the settings).
"White Tiger", 28 Panfilov men, "Brest Fortress", ”Moment of Truth” (In august 44) - Even better if you read the book of the same name by Bogomolov. Amazing story, I've read it three times. “Tankers”;
“Degraded”; “We are from the future 2” ua-cam.com/video/V6ZVXtdAz78/v-deo.html guys get from the modern world into the past, into the war. "The Star"-sabotage reconnaissance group behind enemy lines;
I also advise modern ones: Escape from Hell (Devyataev) a real story of escaping from a concentration camp on a German bomber, “Rzhev” about the bloodiest battle that claimed the lives of >1,200,000 soviet in three months, more than during the defense of Moscow in 7 months. "321 Siberian" . but these three films are not on UA-cam.
Мade in USSR: Come and see;
"Liberation" - 5 episodes, "Hot snow",
“The Fate of a Man” is more of a human drama, USSR 1957.
"They fought for their homeland" , Two Comrades Were Serving" - a film about the civil war, a fascinating story about a cameraman of an intelligent and commander from the people; "Admiral" 2008 civil war, real story.
“The Ballad of a Soldier” is a military melodrama that was very popular in the USSR; “The Cranes Are Flying” is a tragic poignant story;
If you love spy intellectual dialogue plot, then “Seventeen Moments of Spring” 12 episodes is for you. A Soviet agent in the highest echelon of the Third Reich in an attempt to interfere with the behind-the-scenes negotiations between the Germans and the Allies.
l'âme russe, ce peuple a souffert, mais qu'elle grandeur d'âme
One thing the world don't know: Hollywood is crap.
Contemporary Hollywood, may be, but not all vintage war movies!
I know that these are actresses, but I still love each and every one of them.
We like this TV Series from India !!
All the Germans heard (besides explosions) during an attack was the slight whoosh of the planes, which reminded them of the sound of a witch's broom, thus the name nachthexen, or "Night Witches", which the women heard about and embraced.
nice series of world war realy i like movie please translate into hindi
a good series on WWII
I read once that during W.W.II the Russians had 800,000 women under arms. It's good their story is being told, however much within the limitations of a t.v. show.
This was a great series! I couldn't stop after one and had to cancel my plans and watch them all straight through...
Does anyone know if the "Night Witches" could only fly when there was moonlight? I know they say they see in the dark "like cats" but really how did they do it if there was no moonlight?
Neal Teitelbaum by compass and map one was pilot another navigator
Those planes may be antiquated but they did the job .
why is it every Russian military drama I watched someone's always named "Zhenya"? just curious..
It's a common name in Russia.
Hi, watch more WWII movies on my channel, more to follow.
P.S.IN August of 1944 Zhenya is present too. Just a popular name for both men and women. Yevgeniy = Zhenya and Yevgenia = Zhenia.
Well is like any other places in the worldwide example hispanos always Maria 😂😂😂
Teresa Twito and Juan.
Evgeni, Yevgeni, Yevgeniy (masc), Yevgenia (fem)...Eugene, eugène (French, English), Eugenia (Spanish), etc., (from Greek ''The welll born"). Pronounced /ʒénia/.
these are a beautiful people...
@14:20 That styrofoam sound of the snow says it's at Zero Degrees F.
The water flowing in the middle of the River agrees it's not below.
Now I want the PO-2 in War Thunder even more
he is in the game
just get it that's still a problem
Pilots will suspect the flyers yelling to communicate in the air is a bit too creative. It's normally impossible to yell over the noise in an open plane. Even so this is good drama and I enjoyed all the parts. A bit of inaccuracy is excusable for a watchable story based on real heroic people and real events.
The Soviets actually hated the PSSGS with the barrell magazines, they had a common fault on jamming, later on they developed clip magazines which were far more reliable, the gun itself was a good machine gun
Anyone else hear because of the Sabaton song Night Witches?
*Here
me lol but it inspired me to do more research on them
I wish they’d redo this in a movie and wind the stories up! It ended too soon! This is really good but ends too soon!
There are 8 episodes
My father, a World War 2 veteran on the wrong side told me they called these airplanes Aunt Mary. They shot down many of them from the ground.

Hi, there was another great Russian ww2 series, I can't remember its name, it was about Nazi's rounding up Children, a Russian squad was trying to save Them, one of the fighters was looking for His own kids. If anyone knows it, please let Me know.
the ending is intense!
Dear Star Media could you please show the latest movie called Podolsk Cadets ( Last Frontier) with English subtitles. Someone told me it’s a great movie.
