I'm actually blown away by this preview. Everything I've ever dreamed of making in Foundry for my players is shown here in a high-budget way. There's clearly so much love put into this project. This will be the future of digital TTRPGS!
Thank you @Matery - our team loves to hear this. We are working so hard to deliver on that potential. Thank you for the kind words and for your support!
The Vista feature exactly the kind of thing I've been looking for, for a long time. I hope that feature somehow gets integrated into Foundry at some point or goes standalone.
Backed! Sat on it for a while due to the price and my lack of confidence/terror DMing.. but eventually decided to do it as an investment to finally run a campaign for my DM and friends.
I was now pretty happy with having my big tile with some other outside the map to click and switch picture, but now I see that I can MAKE good looking ones? and the trees giggle? sigh, this is just so good, now I'm once again unsatisfied with my theather
We're super pumped for this! Besides all of the world-building and the adventure, super excited to see what a TTRPG rules system design esp. for VTT will look like.
Very excited for this! And the Vistas look great! perfect for my aphantasia that otherwise makes theatre of the mind encounters/scenes like that difficult.
Loooove the features, just amazing. Not a fan of the artstyle, I just don't like the digital doll like art and the generic lighthearted fantasy looking setting, but that is highly subjective. I hope that these awesome features will creep into other games and modules. Nonetheless this is probably going to be a huge success and seems like a impressive feat. Well done Foundry.
We have a lot of darker and more menacing characters as well! It's true that Ember isn't a grimdark setting, but there are certainly grim elements to our storyline and to the antagonists that you will face.
This really hits a sweet spot! You guys did an incredible job with this one! This is all I could ever imagine as a DM. I love the artstyle and the world looks fantastic. I was first a bit shocked about the price but now that I've the first episode with GCN I'm absolutely hooked! It's so worth it! Take my money 💰💰💰

This looks amazing! All these features look so cool to use! I did want to ask about The Ember Sandbox. It looks like we would be able to create custom vistas and custom locations, but would we be able to integrate our own maps (city/town/village maps, battlemaps, or even like a custom continent map) and will we be able to use our own scene images as well? Ember looks amazing and I already know I would want to continue after the story creating my own homebrew continuation, but I am curious if we will have access to all of Ember cool modules and tools to do this.
ngl, this looks really great. your answers in the comment section down here are also great, but I have some more questions: I play using the metric (the normal one) system. if I play with ember will I have to click on every light, sound, wall and all that to switch from feet to meters? because that would really be tedious. the menu to create the characters and have your log are beautiful, but let's say I want to customize stuff... can I had a class? a subclass? adding a feature that I made because it made sense within the story? how does the sheet work? can I use other modules I commonly use in my other foundry games (as long as compatible with crucible or dnd5e, of course)? the kickstarter talks about content updates; does that mean we'll get dlcs? like idk, new species, new classes, a new map (maybe on another plane/planet), new events? how would stuff like that interact with the base game? PS release the vistas creation as a module or as a core foundry feature and my life is yours! ...please?
Will it be possible to migrate monsters that were previously made for D&D 5e modules into Ember? Is the Crucible mechanic completely different for monster stats and some work will be required or even impossible to transfer?
You an use external D&D monsters in Ember without any extra effort required. To convert those monsters to the Crucible game system would require work as the systems don't have an easy 1:1 mapping.
Quick question about the kickstarter. It says the setting is included with the actual game and the pdf/book for it is just the download or having it in person. But is the music addon for it also included in the base game? Also, really excited for this! It looks amazing.
The entire contents of the setting guide is included within the base Ember Game. The setting book is optimized for a familiar reading experience with a beautiful book layout. Inside the software all of the Setting Guide information is included just in a different format that is more optimized for the VTT use case! Similarly, with the base game you get the complete audio experience. The soundtrack just offers a pre-composed and mastered version of the musical score that you can listen to outside of the context of Foundry VTT or use to bring Ember's wonderful music into other games that aren't using the Ember module.
I know you work hard right now on ember and foundry. But would dream of a first update of developpement now nearly one month after the kickstarter. It's just a wish take the time it need 🎉
We are going to *try* to release for D&D5E and Crucible simultaneously. If we were in a position where that was not possible, however, we would release the 5e version first in order to get it out to our backers as soon as possible with Crucible support coming several months later.
Looks incredible! Hopefully the (understandable) desire to make it 5e-compatible doesn't turn the crucible version into a poor experience with dilluted mechanics. I'll be watching expectantly!
I'm feeling quite confident on this front that we can provide an excellent and elegantly designed experience in both systems. We have full control over the Crucible mechanics so we can ensure that the mesh point between the Crucible system rules and the Ember game experience is perfectly calibrated!
The game is designed for a Gamemaster and group of players. There isn't a specifically advertised "solo play" option, although many people can and do play through TTRPG adventures by themselves - but this requires the sort of mental self-discipline to be your own GM. It's not a mode of play we advertise as Ember supporting, the experience is designed for a group.
I thought Ember was originally announced along with Crucible. Are Ember and Crucible not from the same team at Foundry? 5e makes business sense, obviously, especially with such fierce competition in the last few years in the VTT space. Foundry kinda already has the PF2e crowd locked in
We aren't doing any official translations aside from English at this time, however Ember is created using all of the localization tools that Foundry Virtual Tabletop supports so the possibility is there to offer alternate language versions in the future! The scope of Ember is vast though, so the cost of creating (and importantly maintainin) non-English translations would be significant. It's on our minds as something we can add when the time is right!
I really do hate top down tokens for characters, they're not expressive at all and it just looks bad, but presumably you can still pick your own tokens
I know that people can have a love/hate relationship with top-down tokens. Unfortunately (for folks in the "hate" camp), I'm a top-down lover so that influences our design here. You'll be able to customize yourself though and swap to something different, it just will require a bit of prep work that otherwise wouldn't be required.
Surely a lot of work and could be a good product...but no PF2 and English only is a no go for me. I can't back up something "wishing" the community and third parties add ons will maybe do something about it.
I fully support foundry as the best VTT but i'm not going to lie, I'm not seeing anything new that you cant already do using the addon Monks Active Tile Triggers. Moving tokens or tiles from point to point, entering a point to reveal an image in the background. Changing your elevation. Enlarging an image after x time, playing a sound when you step or click on a designated point. Altering darkness levels. All of these can easily be done from dropdown menus once the addon is activated and you configure your scene. The character creator tool is the only new thing I see, and perhaps the dice so nice reacting to the scene dice. I'm hoping this is their attempt to show the best of the software to rival the D&D beyond VTT attempt that approaches. (note foundry can do 3D also)
Ember is built on top of Foundry Virtual Tabletop using the Foundry VTT API. Everything that Ember is doing is inherently things that it's *conceivable* to do in Foundry VTT. There isn't any other product that is doing it this way, however, with the level of performance, polish, consistency of writing and design, and overall collection of features that provides an absolutely comprehensive package.
I think the huge difference between this and the third-party module is that this is carefully crafted by a team of highly experienced developers instead of one person / a small crew. For me, this already seems way less tedious / time-consuming and more user-friendly then Monks.
I agree, but honestly the part that interest me is the setting, the already prepared and automated map, the MANY maps (I pay quite a bit on patreon to gain access to a lot of maps, and the one shown here look quite good) and the library of assets for vistas (and the vistas builder). beside that, I guess that even the fancy menus are quite valuable (tons of js I would never want to even do). basically, buying ember for me would mean paying for the art and for having someone automating a HUGE chunk of the whole campaign.
Ember is their own system, D&D is orders of magnitude more popular, PF2e is not great for sandbox games, PF2e requires more design knowledge and skill to create adventures for. Oh and foundryvtt have more control over 5e and embers system development in foundry. BTW, love pf2e, but their decision makes the most sense. Possible we will see a stretch goal way down the line if they make enough, but honestly I would rather see elements spun off into v13/v14 development instead
Ok, this is really, really impressive, but how dare you say this is ZERO prep? You're making it look like a video game that you can just turn on and it works, but any GM who has used Foundry knows that learning how to use all of the extensions and add-ons required to have an experience like this will require a lot of time to LEARN. We also will have to READ the campaign as well, you know? That counts as prep! (And it's laughable to me that you said that making your own Vistas would take "minutes" unless you meant 45 minutes, or 120 minutes. Come on.) Ember looks like a dream project and even if you fail at 60% of what you're promising here it's going to be amazing, but why would you overpromise and exaggerate so much?
Thanks for your comment and I appreciate your skepticism. I may not be able to entirely convince you, but a few things to point out. 1. Regarding "zero prep", perhaps it's a little bit of an exaggeration, but I don't actually think by much. Because of the dynamic event engine and nature of Ember's gameplay, as the GM you won't even know for sure exactly which events are going to occur as the party travels across the region. Since the Gamemaster isn't expected to know exactly what's coming up, the design of Ember is such that we don't expect the GM to have prepared that event ahead of time. We expect the Gamemaster to be reacting to the gameplay events that occur in real-time along with the players, so those events are presented and laid out in a very easy to digest way that allows the GM to quickly survey them and jump into the action alongside the players. Of course for GMs that do read ahead and really master the Ember campaign setting, that prep time will be valuable to them. You still BENEFIT from prep, but our goal is that you can play Ember without it. 2. Regarding the "create a vista" and the amount of time required, the time lapse shown in this video was recorded in 6 minutes of real time, and I think ended up being a very complete example of what a finished vista would look like. Of course we are trying to market the product though, so we're going to highlight things in a bit of a grandiose way, but I don't think our claims are as far-fetched as you imply!
It's certainly *more* like a video game than other TTRPG products, but we are being quite careful to stay on the TTRPG side of that valley. Ember is a collaborative storytelling experience for a Gamemaster and a group of players. Agency over the story belongs to the people at the table. The software provides a framework for making that story epic and enjoyable. We want Ember to be an amazing TTRPG experience, not a poor video game one (which to be fair, it would be).
@@FoundryVTT I don't mean to sound hateful, what is shown is amazing and something I definitely would have used more than a year ago.
