The kit was magnificent, there's no doubt about it. Possibly one of my favourite ever just for the sheer range of options available. Free company, crossbowmen or archers in one box is an economical release for both GW and for us. However, there are third party options available if they don't re-release it. I've been very happy with the Highland Mini range, and am currently eyeing up a block of their Militia figures.
@@hpenvy1106no third party kit comes close to the flavour, customisability and love put into this kit unfortunately I can find a much better third party for nearly every GW kit, but not this one.
I read it as 1) Their max bonus to LD is +2 because that's their max rank bonus 2) They still benefit from the generals leadership and BSB reroll as a detachment as long as the parent company is within range of them. 3) Unlike pistoliers, you can screen them with 5 archers if you want to avoid an untimely charge I still don't see a massive potential for them unless it's specifically against other trash, but I haven't had the chance to test it out either...
1) Horde increases their max rank bonus by 1. 2) I don't think the Ld of the General could be transmitted that way. Regimental Leadership specifically states that the detachment uses the regimental units Ld. The BSB specifically wouldn't transmit, as the detachment rules are very specific about which of the Psychology rules are transmitted. I was very sad when I realised that sticking a Captain in a block of state troops doesn't give Hold the Line to it's detachments and make them immune to panic.
In earlier editions I would have used these guys only as a detachment, but I think the new rules for them - open order, warband, throwing weapons - makes them a really interesting flanking unit where you're playing with more terrain that impedes light cavalry.
I have a ton of them. Bought for cheap back during 6th. Added bonus: I have the equivalent of 10 Mordheim warbands laying around on top of my old Sisters of Sigmar
Makes me think of making a Roman style army, use the free company as the first light of javelin throwing melee/skirmishers. Have them as detachments for the second line of swordsmen with cav, crossbows and artillery to support.
Way back in 6th edition I made a dark elf army based on "how many repeater crossbow shots can I put out in a turn?" and the answer was "a lot". This tended to be either completely worthless or would table the opponent the moment they got into range just off volume of fire. I imagine you could do a similar army using free company in old world.
I love Militia, they have done exactly what I want them to do, block my opponent. And on two occasions I have managed to kill a knight by throwing things at them. One was an Empire and the other was a Chaos Knight.
Wonder if its worth putting something like a Ulric Priest in. He gives his unit +D3 movment on the charge, and for an impetuous unit that might make all the difference. Also, he offers his unit Multiple Wounds 2, and thanks to their relatively high number of attacks, that might be useful if you run into something spongy but low armoured - like, monstrous Infantry.
I am going to try them as both detachments and a blob, but I think there's a clear downside to them. The reliance on warband for leadership when combined with levy means that if they get hit by something that has first charge they'll be down to LD 6 or 7 (people will kill that champ if they can by allocating attacks), and if they do break they are only rallying on that 6 or 7 even if they are near the general. State troops will rally on an 8 with a musician, and potentially a 10 in a general's range. So I think free company are going to be a bit of a gamble! Not necessarily a bad one, but impetuous and low LD for rallying could really screw you. Throwing broken bottles at the enemy and then shanking them is definitely fun though.
I have two units of 20 and another 20 still on spru. Oddly enough they came in a “zombies of the pirate coast” set from white dwarf. Which contained 3 boxes worth of milita sprus and 2 of the oop zombies boxes. At the time I was like hell GW and now I’m not so up set, being zombie pirates only had 6th edition rules for the dogs of war army that got a single codex. I was so annoyed at the time that they’ve been at the bottom of the pile of shame for 10 plus years lol might pull them out now
I think you got a few things wrong. Militia with warband can only get +2 to their leadership since they can only claim rank bonus of max +2 as open order + horde so they will be LD 8 (10+ guys) or 9 (15+ guys), never 10. Also, only the first row will be able to throw their throwing weapons, which is in most cases 5 guys, so pretty underwhelming or do I miss something? To be honest, I only see these as a detachment of 10 or 15 to speermen or greatswords and there they just mess up the combat res having no armor and dying like flies, eben when attacked to the side. Same amount of spearmen as detachment is better in any way.
I believe when I last played them I had Valten in the ranks, and they were unbreakable, which was nasty, is there any upgrade or character that can do this?
well me i like em and fun paint pirats and all that hek got my towns fokes mad mob yes have a quilt and a musiten that plays a fidel and women in raks one the has a chiken to hot the bad guys but yes got get new minis to do more and tune in to as do new
Hes holding his flintlock sideways he gangster he thug
The old free company models (which started as Mordheim Human Mercenaries) are still my favorite Warhammer kit. It was such an amazingly flexible kit.
I really really hope GW re release the kit. People have been charging a fortune for them since they were discontinued.
Feel free to supplement with whatever :)
No reason to pay GW/ price gougers

Very cool video! Love this serie! Just got a pack of 20 bastards. Let's see how fast they die.
Take them as DETACHMENTS!!!!

Empire battle reports and lots of them please, Ill even jump in to the Mordian gloryhole if you do.
more old world content - love it keep it up
I am taking a block of Halflings as a free company from the Moot. :D
HA me too! most expensive unit I own lol

I bought a kit of them way back in the day to use for mordheim...
Another great video giving me a Mordian Glory.

They could be interesting in detachments for Greatswords, as they'll pick up Stubborn, which will be a good partial counter to their low leadership.
(Then again you'll struggle to get the Detachment big enough to make use of Hordes.)
why are they called Free Company Militia if you have to pay for them Mmmmm🤔

If they’re shooting at a large target all racks can see and shoot. So it’s occasionally possible.
I believe when I last played them I had Valten in the ranks, and they were unbreakable, which was nasty, is there any upgrade or character that can do this?
can be good take the griffon standard with them and have a +6 rank bonus?
they seem fun atleast, gonna try 15 as a detachment cus that all i own lol
Throwing weapons, BS 3 so 4+ to hit, multiple shots makes that 5+, but its also only 9" - so unless
👍
With multiple shots and long range, every 3rd guy i doing 1 hit, every 9th guy is wounding t4. They really dont do that much... :(

No GW models readily available.....so you can't play them in a GW store.
