A real periscope would often use internal reflection with a 45 degree prism..... this lets you mount the two sides on a right angled bracket. It is also less prone to damage. Also, you’ll have lenses to remove the sensation of ‘looking down a tube’ and provide magnification.

That tiny tank periscope weighs around 20 to 30 pounds. I use to have a bunch of them they were thrown out when they closed the guard base in Kingman when I was a kid.

Nice to see Bonnie making an appearance on the show. When is Murphys wife gonna show up. She seems so creative I'm sure she'd be able to teach the boys something
When i made one of those ( ok, actually my dad and i) we just used one pvc pipe, but we cut the edges at a 45 degree angle, glued flat mirrors top and bottom and drilled holes to see, i think its simpler than what was done in the video, but it was less stilish
You should make some kind of anti-reflection device (ARD) for it, to protect the mirror, prevent anything from going into/down the tube, and reduce reflection.
As a child you always remember the strangest stuff, and i remember one episode of curious george where he makes one of these out of some cardboard, after he saw one in a store or something
Just to let everybody know, you can make your own safety mirrors by using a spray paint called SpazStix Ultimate Mirror Chrome and some simple plastic panels bought at a hobby store. You spray one side of the transparent plastic with the chrome and that'll act like the silver backing on a mirror and be almost as reflective. You could easily measure and cut that plastic to fit inside any diameter of PVC, and even make them for kids since there's no dangerous glass to break. :)
If only there was some sort of device on the table that you could have used to hold the pipe in place while you used a rotary tool on it. Some sort of device designed specifically for that function. Screwed to the table so it wouldn't move. A device so effective at holding things it's where the term "Vice like grip" originates. If only such a device existed.
It's also relevant to mention that the French and German armies used a combination binocular periscope that could be aimed. The stalks of the periscope could be angled together until the target was properly focused, and using some basic trigonometry, they could measure the distance to a target. This is how German tank killers were able to accurately take out allied vehicles from a mile away.
Damn, I used to watch you guys a lot more. It's not even like the videos are any worse, they're arguably higher production quality. However it feels like youtube never recommends me your videos anymore, and that's kinda sad

Periscopes have been around for as long as people have been putting lenses in tubes, they where super useful in the days of trench warfare where you risked your head being removed if you peaked over the edge, by some dude disguised as a tree. They did eventually fall out of style from the 40s-50s as the need to carry a device to peer over ledges was less of a necessity as warfare became more mobile. However the periscope was used for a very interesting way in the form of a range finder, by using 2 periscopes and adjusting them by moving them closer together until the image of what you where shooting at was clear, a little preset meter would tell you how far away something was. This was mounted on tanks until electronic range finding came into play. Normal periscopes where and still are very useful in tanks as armor in the 40s got so thicc that slits are useless, and putting a hole in the armor to see out of was, dangerous, cost money, and made a weakpoint in the front armor, so seeing over the armor was preferable to keep the crew safe.
Hint: I use those automotive mirrors on telescoping sticks, with the adjustable angle mirrors. Obviously you can camouflage them using one of those sniper veils, burlap and some local flora. They are CHEAP, pretty small and easy to add to your drag bag (rifle bag), day pack, or even put them in your exterior pockets. Every auto parts store, Harbor Freight, etc. has them. Note: Be prepared to draw fire if you are looking into the sun. I would only use them for a sneak and peek. These days little micro cameras are nice, something with a wide angle for extended and remote viewing. But, batteries are always an issue. If you want to spend more, get a "golf periscope", or the UZI ones online. They are far less expensive than the real military ones.
I'd probably have just sliced both ends of the tube off at 45', cut a square out of the top front and bottom back, then glued the mirrors to the angled ends. I've not got the MOST elaborately equipped hobby workshop, but I reckon I could have quite likely built one this way in the total 20 minute run time of this video.

Fun submarine fact: in WWII, the targeting periscope (which was usually the larger of two periscopes in any submarine) wasn't just for looking around, it had all kinds of mechanical hardware in it. It could determine the target's relative bearing, range, speed, and a bunch of other stuff that would be automatically relayed to the torpedo fire control computer, so the work of calculating a firing solution was much more automated than in WWI. (Of course, modern subs can carry out targeting entirely via sonar, so they barely need the periscopes at all, but they're still handy now and then.)
What a difference a generation makes. We made periscopes back in the sixties from a couple of milk cartons, mirrors from our Moms' compacts, and paper tape. Instructions were often found in comic books (Detective, Military, Adventure, Spy genres but not superhero for obvious reasons). There was even a version for a "listening periscope". By the time we were nine, we moved on to other things.
Simplify. Forget the elbows and streamline it. Just cut 45 degree angles on each end and glue the mirrors on each end. You can also get various-sized round plastic mirrors in the bathroom supply section of Walmart.
Edmond Scientific had (has) a periscope in their "vestibule" with the objective end above the roof, so you could look around. That one, and the ones in submarines, rotate as a whole, requiring the observer to walk around the vertical axis in order to look to the sides, rear, etc. But what if a small vehicle prevents the observer from moving around? You can just have the top mirrlr (pipe ell in your case) to rotate independently, but the view to the rear will be upside down, and the view to the side will be on its side, not being the easiest to interpret. So you should investigate the "roof prism (a.k.a. erecting prism). You will need gears. And the text you read will be backwards, unless you add or remove a mirror.
I feel like scam school was better than this show because you did it all yourself!! Why not make a bad periscope yourselves instead of having someone make it? It’s UA-cam not tv!! Brian I miss scam school
An ultrasonic knife would make cutting that PVC way easier and safer than using a rotary tool, as someone who has cut altogether too much PVC with a rotary tool. They're way more expensive, but they're great tools.

"Intermission with Cory" Translation: Cory un-screws up what Brian and Jason screwed up.
They talk to each other like a couple trying to save their marriage despite being completely uncompatible.
