- Want an apartment in New Jersey? It will be costlier than it should be because of politicians who hold up promising developments to help their cronies.

----
I first covered the hold-up about 3 years ago, after I confronted Edgewater, New Jersey mayor Michael McPartland.
"Are you on the take?" I asked at a town council meeting, after he'd ignored interview requests.
He never answered.
McPartland was accused of corruptly blocking an exciting new development of hundreds of waterfront apartments -- all to protect his powerful developer friend Fred Daibes.
He and other city council members lived in one of Daibes' buildings.
A lawsuit alleged that nearly 2,000 competing apartments were blocked by Daibes and the town council.
The mayor and council got aggressive, even at one point attempting to seize the competing developer's land using eminent domain. That was stopped in court.
Since my first reporting, a few things have changed. After the developer sued, claiming corruption, McPartland and the city council switched sides. The corruption suit was dropped, and the politicians agreed to approve most of the developer's proposed construction.
Sadly, the exciting development still remains unbuilt. That's because now a spa - with close connections to Daibes, according to the developer - has sued Edgewater, saying the council was not allowed to approve the development under duress of a corruption lawsuit.
Thanks to politicians, lawyers, and their cronies, beautiful waterfront property remains... a dump. Taxpayers, and renters, lose.
Disgusting, classic politicians. Glad you bring stuff like this to light
Unfortunately people don't care or pay attention to this all they do is flee the problem instead of trying to fight back against the problem
He brings this stuff to light and what? Nothing happens, so what is he really accomplishing other than getting views?
but these NEW politicians saying things we like to hear are gonna be different! we promise!
Love you ThioJoe ❤️
Never thought I'd see ThioJoe on a Stossel video

These are real criminals who should be in jail.
In the US, criminals roam around freely these days. No law can catch up with them. Thats why this country is in this mess. Not even in a 3rd world country corruption is this bad.
You realize everyone at the top is a criminal right? Only reason they there is because they the best at getting away with it.
Yes, a lot of corruption politicians needs to be held accountable
Too many bad people IN NJ. I have 1000 Chewbacca’s I will unleash to fight corruption in the Towns and cities.
Jail? How about an address in the middle of the Hudson river instead.
They have a lawyer present at a simple council meeting, yeah they're totally innocent
These are criminal jerks no doubt but it is common that the city attorney is at every town meeting. The same goes for the county attorney at county commissioners meetings. Standard practice.
Yes, the situation is disgusting but not for the reason you are suggesting. You will find the city/county legal counsel in just about every public meeting-for good reason. By itself, it does not indicate corruption.
I am curious, however, when the counsel for the city pipes up to protect the mayor’s personal business and potentially act against the best interest of the city that hired him as counsel.
@@Boogbama123 I think that if it's common to have an attorney present at city council meetings, than it's common they are all corrupt
@@zool3904 This is the most logical conclusion.
I went to law school; the system has been coopted by the corrupt and many lawyers are only too happy to be complicit for a buck.

Corruption in politics really isn't new. I just find it funny how they react when you confront these crooks to their face. They act like "you're" the asshole.

@@neetpride5919 politicians in California in general. Or New York, they have corrupt politicians too
I think you hit the nail on the head with that statement.
Almost all of them are Republicans.
I grew up in NJ and it was generally understood that nearly everything in the state had some level of corruption. Now that I’m older I realize it’s not just in NJ.
And sadly it’s gotten way worse lately I believe
Try Colorado, Hawaii, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Nevada, Alaska,... I am from New Jersey, born & raised, but unlike most from New Jersey I have lived out of the state for the last 30 years. No, NJ does not have a monopoly on corruption, but it does have a significantly greater level of corruption, more so than any other state (excluding California). This Mayor substantiates my assessment.

Stossel: "are you on the take?"
politician: "your done."
Me: " so that's a Yes."
In the valley where I grew, the big farmers and local government got together and implemented water rights laws, which keeps smaller farmers from being able to expand their farms. You cannot put water on land that has never had it before. However, we all know the big farmers who implemented it, always expand their lands and my dad knows that they never had water rights before since he lived in the valley for about 65 years. Anytime a farmer expands his lands and puts water on land that has never had it before, no one ever tries to take him to court to make him stop.
A couple years ago, another valley close by tried to do the same thing. One of the biggest farmers fought against it because he knew it would harm the smaller farmers. Since he went against it, no one else tried to push for it.
Anyway, in the video Stossel says that after his report came out, the city planners push through all the other projects.
In New Jersey, just like in the valley where I grew up, they are likely doing things that are highly illegal. Once Stossel's report came out, they allowed the projects through in order to keep the federal government from digging into their illegal activities. In the valley where I grew up, it is highly likely that the laws the implemented are unConstitutional, but no one around there is saying much of anything when they are broken, because it might open up a federal investigation and some politicians might go to jail for it.
I've always found it interesting that when you "catch" someone doing something they're not supposed to be doing, ya know like criminal activities. They tend to NOT want to discuss those in public! They'd rather "talk about it somewhere in a wharehouse with their ARMED buddies." Ya know, "talk about it" (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).
These are the stereotypical politicians that everyone thinks about when you say-DemoRat! Yep, it's THESE guys!!

Depends on your meaning of the word "take".
I'd understand if stossel had got it wrong and he got angry and started ridiculing stossel, but when you just go "well I don't have to answer it so shut up", yeah that's a bit (as my generation would say) "sus"
They need to be held accountable for their corruption.

When the mayor's lawyer, at a public hearing, tells him not to answer a question.....
GUILTY !
That's because if he answered yes, he would be admitting guilt.
If he answered no, he would be perjuring himself on video.
@@VideoArchiveGuy Sounds to me like the answer was yes then. The developer should have kept the lawsuit rolling and bankrupted him.
Without a doubt

@@VideoArchiveGuy I don't think it would be perjury. Politicians at these council meetings aren't usually under oath.
It's funny how upset they get when getting called out for being sellouts.
It's probably because they know it's so rife they feel they're the one in a thousand that have to even attempt to explain themselves.
More like part of the mob
That’s when you know you have them dead to rights
Selling out is 100% legal and can be ethical. As John bluntly asked them, this is about bribery which is illegal and unethical.
They’ll soon learn how to twist it up on you to avoid getting mad.
When folks call Joe Rogan a liar, his fans use another defense to avoid seeming angry or defensive. They say: “well who wouldn’t sellout if they were offered $150 million dollars” or “wouldn’t you take that kind of money?!”
I’m sure people like this mayor will soon start putting it on you for why they are the way they are.
You'll have tons of people point to this and say "SEE CAPITALISM IS EVIL". This isn't capitalism, this is corruption. This is the antithesis of capitalism.
Over 90% of problems they attribute to capitalism is just corruption. It happens in all forms of government to be fair, but with capitalism our quality of living actually improved vastly.

"Objectionable tone"
John was cool and collected. His "tone" was totally fine
His tone was factual. That's what they did'nt like about it.
The only reason it's objectionable is because it's true.
Haha! Yes, when he said that, in my mind I thought, WHAT!?!?! Corrupt liars quickly become Gaslighters when called out for their corruption.
Like tone is a reason not to answer a question at a "public" meeting.
So much for "public" meeting when no one else is allowed to attend or hear the questions.
Childish diversion tactic (no one was fooled and facts don't care about feelings).
One of the only journalists actually doing investigative pieces.
James O’Keefe and Andy Gno are also doing great work. Hence, they are attacked.

@@studdruppo Tucker Carlson isn’t allowed to do any investigative pieces against corporate sponsors, who are mainly big Pharma, auto, insurance, and the list of corporate donors who finance Congressrat campaigns.
He’s excellent at agitating the audience in a cool and controlled manner, but it will never be against the top-tier manipulators of information in the US.
Since Trump is the only President who went after prescription drug pricing, all the big Pharma corporate whore sugar daddies launched a daily assault on Trump’s Presidency, and you never heard a single story about how he was at least flattening drug prices with his HHS Directors every year.
Every single corporate network is nothing but an ad agency for the sponsors. Create fear, sell products. That’s their jobs.
i'll never understand how it is that a journalist without the backing of a MSM corporation can break so many stories, while MSM with all their money and "sources" can't investigate possible news stories, instead use their time and resources revealing that a president likes McDonalds and ketchup on his steak.
It’s disgusting how those in power have the control/power that they have to make subjective decisions to their benefit!!!
Thank you Mr. Stossel for looking out for the small fry. God bless you.
When the mayor at a council meeting has to consult with his attorney before answering, that’s not a good sign
"...not with that objectionable tone..."
Who knew politicians were so sensitive?
😂😂 thought the same thing
It's sad to see as I age that the older adults seem more and more like children.
The "Objectionable tone" comment was used to project their own narrative in the written transcript. The only problem is there is video and audio evidence. Bill Burr has a great riff about a woman saying "No, stop it" during an intimate encounter and the context completely changing as her comments are read in court as opposed to the way she actually said them. It's akin to cops that always say things like "Stop resisting" when the video evidence clearly shows no resistance. It reminds me of the South Park "Oh my god! It's coming right for us" episode.
@@woodsrdr precisely why social media is so horrendous! Communication is 90% body language and vocal tone and thats what is missing when you talk to someone through text. Only just subbed John Stossel, thank you for bringing this up. I wish more people had the gumption to do what you do.
This is corruption front and center, and of course they aren’t able to answer the question because they would face criminal charges.
Nah. Stossel is just forcing right wing propaganda.
they didn't even try to lie, they tried to get him to stop talking
@@johnnylira3312 How is it propaganda?
@@johnnylira3312 lol. You call this propaganda? Stossel is also a libertarian, not a conservative.
@@WaspLife He is using the problems occurring in NJ and redirecting it back to being pro business and tickie dickie down economics. Propaganda from Stossel in a nut shell.
Sometimes when the lawyers say "don't answer" it is because your questions are factual. Way to go John Stossel! They didn't answer but they squirmed.
No answer is an answer.
This happens everywhere. Mankind forgets who is really sovereign.
This is gold. Good for you for making these corrupt a$$ holes uncomfortable by asking the questions no one else has the balls to ask.
Who says the Mafia isn't still active? The responses were straight out of the " Godfather " saga Hey Luigi, see if we got a spare horse.
Exactly. All the government did was take up their rackets. The lotto and taxes are just numbers and extortion with smile.
@@Kunfucious577 The lottery is a poor tax.
Does Stossel have a horse named “Khartoum”?
I like how every time John asked a question they both had to whisper to each other before they'd respond.
John-"are you on the take"
2 guys-"we gotta get rid a dis guy, he's asking too many questions." (said in a whisper)
John-"is it true that you guys"......(gets cut off)
2 guys-"just a minute....(said in a whisper) let me call vinnie, they'll never find his body." "okay, you're done here.
John-"you didn't answer any questions."
2 guys-"you can sit down, you're done!" (in a whisper)"vinnie's in the parking lot, he's gonna take care a dis guy."
Oh, organized crime is very much alive in the U.S.! Just ask the drug cartel coming across the border. They know not to mess with the American mafia.
Wow. Watch your back, John. These look like the kinds of people that would give you cement shoes to swim in the river.
They'd hire someone, most can barely walk from the front door to the car.
Exactly!!! The guy who was talking looked on edge!!!
They do! Time to start locking up criminals instead of pretending not to notice.
@@Deacetis1991 indeed.
you can't swim with cement shoes . LOL
Not answering the questions, already set their answers... 😡
John, I have critically followed your research for decades. Thank you for excellent reporting. Seems very few reporters are smart enough, or dedicated enough to do the expected work. Almost a lost profession. All the best!
I would have been so mad at those people not answering my questions. That’s what makes stossel the professional I guess.
yeah he is showing godlike professionalism
They shouldn't have the option to dismiss questions from reporters or the general public, and they should be heavily criticized and scrutinized when they try to.
Sometimes silence speaks volumes
Yeah, and they still had a problem with his “tone.”
That's what they count on, you getting irate so they can throw you out. That's how this racket works. Keeps them isolated and away from the people they're screwing over.
Boy the behaviour at the meeting sure says a lot
Creepy! Wormy political cronies doing their little worm dance ... Someone put them back in the bottle (mezcal), please 🐛
I was pretty confused. Was the guy on the council so corrupt that he has to have his lawyer sit beside him every where he goes or was he a member of the council too?
@@pamelapainter3195 it seems to be both.
Great job Stossel your a true report investigating the real stories that have major affects!!
Thanks for bringing such corruption to our attention.
I gave up late last year on NJ, sold my house this spring, and moved to FL - my wife and I could not be happier.
@z borg Same here. New Hampshire sucks.
God bless you, best wishes.
Why? Because FL doesn't have corrupt politicians?
@@bobe3250 Not nearly as bad as NJ. Watch John Stossel's recent short video. He's lucky he's not in a barrel.
Just don’t go to FL and vote for “progressive” politicians especially democraps or FL will look like NJ in no time.
The answer in the simplest form: Yes. Crooked, corrupt, on the take, compromised...take your pick...time to kick these crooks to the curb (or a jail cell). Keep shining a light on this corruption
It's currupt all the way from cops to the courts. Only way is to off them all like the Russian people did to the royals 100 years ago.
Corruption in New Jersey?? Im totally shocked.
Keep up the fantastic work Mr. Stossel
"A good lawyer never asks a question that he doesn't already know the answer". Right on John Stossel!
Very true Faye 👍
Having read the chapter in Burton Folsom's book "New Deal or Raw Deal" about the IRS and corruption. This feels like a normal day in New Jersey.
This channel is just a bunch of Capitalist Propaganda
@@just_a_turtle_chad honest reporting = capitalism. Said with no sense of irony.
Jersey is a cesspit. We’d be better off if it slid under the ocean
@@just_a_turtle_chad I don’t think you know what “propaganda” means. Truth isn’t propaganda.
@@just_a_turtle_chad If exposing corruption is a "Capitalist propaganda", then let it be.
If you don't like the content, you can just happily fuq off...
So glad we have stossel. What corrupt people.
Thanks for trying to get this corruption out to the public.
They should have to answer or give up their positions.
Jail would be a start for all these corrupt politicians
"Are you on the take?"
I love Stossel so fkn much
Only when politicians are specifically asked the tough questions, a politicians(taxpayer)voted...integrity can be judged.
One of the very, very few actual reporters left. Thank you, John Stossel, for an amazing body of work in what has to be an incredibly frustrating uphill battle.
