    The camera is a tool to get you the best possible image of whichever subject you have chosen. Whether that's burst mode, hoping for a good one, or a painstakingly long process of setting up a tripod and taking a single shot (with crossed fingers) matters not - getting the image is all that usually matters. Kudos to you for knowing your camera inside out! Some great minimalist shots of trees in this episode... loved it. 😍

      Thanks so much dude, this was a bit of an ad hoc shoot, so really happy with what I got in the end ... and you're right, there are so many different ways to get the same shot ... and this is just one of those many ways.

    ha I do the same. Use whatever tech and features helps you get the photo you want. I also shoot with film, so I'm used to taking my time setting up a shot, but it's sometimes nice to go out with just a digital camera and not a tripod and bag full of kit, makes it much faster and you can explore more possibilities.

      Exactly Sam. It's all about utilising the tech we have at our disposal.
      Film is a lot of fun to shoot with and you're completely right, it does force you to slow down doesn't it.

    I’ll give this a try. I like the idea of being able to work quickly. I want to work smarter. I second the recommendation of Vallaret gloves. Got a pair with liners a little over a year ago and I really like them. And to let folks know, their customer service is outstanding! I had a problem with my original pair and their CS folks took it seriously and made it right. If these ever wear out, I’ll get another pair. They are worth the extra money.

    When hand-holding in low light I use the 2-second timer, essentially using myself as the tripod. Gives me time to hold my breath for the best chance of a sharp pic, and reframe if necessary before the picture is taken. Done this for years...

    I've been thinking about this tip and making a connection to your recent video about the Tamron 28-200mm. I've always found it a bit iffy on auto focus at times. Now I'm thinking the fault may have been mine. I'm older and have a touch of essential tremor in my hands at times. No real problems at modest focal lengths but once at 100mm plus, the effect must be more pronounced and camera stabilisation may not be enough. Must give this method a try.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  Рік тому

      I know what you mean about the 28-200mm though, it is a little soft at times, but the versatility really does pay off on those long hikes ... as well as just having a much lighter bag in general.

    Great video, Mike. I often use drive mode as well, which does get me some better photos, but then I get frustrated trying to cull them all. I was wondering what commonality between us keeps me coming back to your channel, then you said you were a lazy photographer. That has to be it, because I definitely fall into that category. Elizabeth and I have been traveling these last couple of weeks all through this storm that has blanketed the US. I wish I had a pair of those gloves you mentioned in this video. If you shoot in aperture or shutter priority, try pushing your exposure comensation into the + side ... the camera is trying to average out the brightness and will underexpose the shot because everything is white.

    Practical advice, made all the more worthwhile in the digital area - not so much when shooting film😊 Mike. Can feel the cold in the vid. Some cams call “drive mode” “continuous shooting”, or such. Decent images. Old adage “cold ears, warm heart”, or something like that.😊
    BTW, staying w/your practical advice, I followed your lead regarding A74 L-Bracket analog by attaching Arca Swiss base to side of a cage - works just fine (depicted in this vid). Would it work as well for a half-cage?

      @@mikesphotography but one thing bothered me. Why are you using mechanical shutter when taking landscapes?

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  Рік тому +1

      I really don't worry about the shutter issues with Sony cameras.
      I had the a7iii and fired over 160,000 photos through it with the mechanical shutter; about 70,000 through my a7rii and I'm currently on about 20,000 in my a7iv.
      I started shooting in 1996 with the EOS 5 so really do prefer the visceral feel of a mechanical shutter. 👍

    Hi, what lens were you using in this video please ? It looks as though it was the same lens throughout

      Hi Steve,
      You're right, it is the same lens. It's the 28-200mm from tamron. amzn.to/3PPYv5U
      A fantastic all-rounder.
      Thanks for watching 😁👍

    Thanks Mike an very interesting tip which I wil try. A question from your experience as you seem to use the mechanical shutter not the electronic (1) is there a reason and (2) how many fps do you find best?

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  Рік тому

      And thanks to you for watching Mike 😁👍
      I like the sound and the feel of the mechanical shutter, I do keep it on electronic rear shutter (basically the setting it comes as standard as).
      I keep it on burst mode hi+ so 10fps, but the low setting also works. It all depends on how shakey your hands are.

    Hello Mike! I can’t figure it out why my camera is storing videos to both memories card slots at the same time?its so annoying that i have go and constantly delete the videos from slot1 which stores both photo/video and slot 2 video only.

      Which camera do you have? There is a setting to choose what gets saved where.

    I'm all for this tip, but worried wouldn't this just add 5x the amount of shutter count to your camera & reduce the longevity of it?

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  Рік тому +1

      That is a good point.
      Although I've had 6 different Sony cameras and never had a problem with the shutters in them.
      I think it's also because I used to shoot a lot of sporting events where I'd be taking 2-3000 shots every weekend, so a few hundred on a landscape outing seems very little to me.

      @@mikesphotography Yeah I agree & me neither, never had any issues with Sony. My main concern was just resell value as personally I tend to keep a camera for a year or 2 then upgrade - obviously higher shutter count usually equals lower value. But I suppose like you said, if you’re usually into sports photography etc then this won’t matter! Appreciate the reply & love your channel mate 👊🏽

      No worries at all.
      I know what you mean about the shutter count when reselling. I sold my a7rii a while back and the guy had watched my video on shutter count ... 😆😆😆 And then proceeded to haggle to get the price as low as possible!
      I recently sold a load of kit through MPB and was pleasantly surprised. I got more than I ever would have for my a7iii compared to eBay ... And that's even before the eBay and PayPal tax!

    How does one make enough from photography to be able to drive around in a Mercedes? Or maybe it's all the sponsors?

      @mikesphotography  Рік тому +3

      Haha! It's an old mercedes ... That doesn't do so well in the snow ... I had to turn around so many times before finding this location.
      In saying that, the old ones are the most reliable, got this one second hand for not much at all and it just keeps going. 😁👍
      This is actually my first sponsor and it helps me make these videos with no cost to you.

    Helpful tip but in essence isn't this just law of averages playing out?

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  Рік тому

      That is exactly what it is ... and it allows you to shoot with much lower shutter speeds than shooting a single shot.
