WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! SHAME on you mr. Velshi! You are a progressive person. STOP having the old outdated FAILURES of the 20th century on your show. These people have failed many times and they are the reason we continue to FAIL, miserably. The porta potties should have been waiting with the bottled water & food to begin flowing in immediately. Housing is easy TINY homes. TINY homes are self contained, they can have water reclaimation, solar panels, indoor plumbing. STOP thinking 19th century and begin thinking 21st century. If more folks had tiny homes, they could have hitched their tiny home to their truck and drove to higher ground. They would be spared losing everything. We as a country would be spared paying for this over and over and over again. It would cost us less in human life and money. The future is mobile. Tiny homes can be built in short amount of time. Travel trailers & motorhomes could also be used. STOP making this hard. Make it easy! Put these people to work cleaning up their own neighborhoods. FDR had federal work programs, why can't biden? The definition of INSANITY is doing the same thing, expecting a different result. Yet, we do this with EVERY hurricane. This is INSANITY.

@Joey's TenPercent You are so wrong in so many points of your rant. Mostly flat out lies. Nobody is telling anyone where to live. It is an idea, since insurance isn't available and hurricanes aren't going away. If one owns the land, of course they can rebuild on it. If it gets blown down, they need cash to rebuild it. Citizens was the only homeowners insurance carrier left. I wouldn't stick around if I were them.

I don't want to be flippant but why do you think people live in areas like this? What options do you think there are? The most vulnerable are always going to be living in the areas at the highest risk for disasters like this. Jobs, infrastructure and cost limit people's options. It's the same reason people live in areas with high levels of pollution. The problem typically just gets worse because everyone with money will pick up and move taking revenue and jobs away making things even worse.
Yes there are solutions but it's incredibly complex.

We have already forgotten about the damage that was inflicted upon the inhabitants of Puerto Rico
by Hurricane Maria which was also a category 4 in 2017, It was hit by Hurricane Fiona last month
and suffered the same flooding and loss that we see in Florida. Unfortunately, they are not
receiving the same level of support as we are seeing in Florida.
Having lived through 2 hurricanes in Hawaii, and seeing the wide spread devastation, many of
the residents affected need to relocate. It is the sad truth. It will take a decade or more to bring
back some semblance of what was just destroyed.
All of the companies who write home owners in Florida will go bankrupt or leave the state leaving
    the residence uninsurable.
This is a real example of climate change. Please don't forget that much of Florida will be dramatically
affected by sea level rise too.
Another hurricane like this will happen again but people don't want to face reality.

In total agreement. Which I sent a post to one of my legislators for the state of Louisiana, laying out exactly what you're describing. These legislators need to effectively put up or shut up. They should all be taking a pay cut, term limits and live with each other in DC dormitories, paying their share of the electricity and mix them up, dems and repub's rooming together. They should never be able to raise their salaries until the people working 3 jobs per family start earning a living wage. I'm so sick of the bickering in politics.
Never seemingly doing what they know is right from the jump. I'm also in agreement about not giving permits to rebuild in low lying vulnerable areas but leaders like the government want to show they're creating jobs, good tax base for the state. God bless and be with those hurricane victims of all of them.

It's always the poor people, the ones living paycheck to paycheck, that don't own homes, that suffer the most in these types of disasters. They can't really get any REAL help from FEMA, because they don't own property. So their jobs are gone, the homes they were renting are gone, everything they own in the world is gone. The hope of getting even a fraction of it replaced is slim, at best. It's a nightmare for them.

  • @rozwynn2349
    @rozwynn2349 2 роки тому +9

I have been saying this since Katrina. The world is constantly evolving. There are certain areas that are not going to be in habitable by people. Whether they are too low and will flood or whether they are in storm zones. Taxpayers cannot continually fund rebuilding in areas that nature is taking back. I don't know how the government addresses it but it needs to be addressed. I literally think this every time Haiti washes away, there has to be somewhere that the people on this island can be rehoused in a safer environment because it's never going to get better and every year we're spending millions and millions of dollars internationally in places like Haiti, India, parts of the United States, etc., that nature is reclaiming coastal land most of it. It is disheartening but we have to realize this is the truth, and make plans.

It would take a lot more than building codes. They need flood walls and other steps to channel as much of the water as possible away from homes and businesses. People just can't pick up and move when they haven't the money, transportation, or a destination to go to. It doesn't matter if the government says to go or not, if you haven't the means. Evacuation costs hundreds of dollars even for a couple of days and can quickly multiply into a thousand plus dollars with gas, food, lodging, etc. Some had to work and could not leave. Essential personnel such as emergency responders, hospitals, news and weather media, the mayor and crew, gas stations, restaurants, hotels, and such occupations all had to shelter in place. We have huge problems now. All these displaced people are going to need housing, jobs and income if they didn't lose theirs in the hurricane, and now cars too, to get from A to B. It was one thing to talk about rehoming the people from Katrina or Rita, but that was more localized, and pockets of communities affected, and this is an entire state in chaos. Prayers for all.

I moved in 2014… I had a 5 year old son… I could’ve moved to a coastal community but I didn’t.. I took hurricanes and flood zones into account… I could’ve moved in the Southwest.. but I saw drought and water issues coming in the future… I made decisions based on the safety of my family and stayed out of fire zones… flood zones… tornado zones… I love the southeast low country but didn’t feel like making my son gator bait. This insanity of allowing developers to build everywhere and anywhere they can make a fast buck has to stop… People need to get smarter about where they choose to live.

@Joey's TenPercent Ron DeSantis is no leader. He is busy making up fake problems with Dr Seuss, Mickey Mouse, crt, and playing hero when he fixes these fake problems. He cannot be trusted with funds to be allocated fairly. He's playing reality tv with human lives, while he could have been let's see... negotiating with insurance companies maybe. He's been traveling around handing out big cardboard checks for photo ops, like Santa Claus after he voted NO on the bill. Another grifting clown show.

@Joey's TenPercent there should not be homes built in those areas...low lying areas surrounded by water may seem like paradise, but it is not cost efficient nor sustainable. If you have been through a hurricane 3 or 7 times, that is a problem. And federal funding should not be used to keep assisting people in an area that is uninhabitable. Throwing money down the drain. A lot of people did not have their homes and boats insured. If these people choose to live in these disaster areas, then insurance should be a must, not an option. Insurance companies are not going to take the risk on homes in these areas. Again...lack of knowledge is a problem and you proved my point by saying you did not understand my argument.

It is income regulated but my rent is still going up almost $100 a month since I moved here two years ago. There already is a housing shortage for seniors and the poor in Florida. I do not know how these people are going to make it. I was smart and moved away from the coast 2 years ago and I am happy that I did so. l formerly lived in New Smyrna Beach and so many people were flooded there and are now heading home to a mess. Their homes are not liveable. Those poor people in SW Florida will suffer for months. It will take that long to get power back and to clean up the mess. Where will they stay at? These residents need to leave and never come back. The government needs to administer grants for them to relocate and start over. An alternative would be to rezone these areas to support better hurricane resistant residential buildings, no homes ever again. Another option is to support the building of next gen mobile homes like from Boxabl that are able to be relocated during a time of emergencies. But rebuilding what was there should not be allowed to happen. Hurricanes, rising ocean levels and other natural disasters aren’t going anywhere.
Funny thing is, most of these people affected criticize the government until they really need them. Sorry people, the idea of small government will never be able to handle disasters like this. A large, more socialistic government would be better suited to support the needs of the people. A more federalized government, not states that only allocate resources to the rich of their constituents.
