Beverley's outstanding performance of this classic rock n' roll song owes nothing to Elvis's version. It is a wonderfully fresh interpretation of the original recording in 1952 by Big Mama Thornton. Written by Lieber & Stoller, and a first time producer role for Leiber, it was the USA No.I for seven weeks in 1953.
What a biased and ignorant comment. Big Mama's version which Knight covers brilliantly its not Rock n Roll, its pure Blues. Elvis' completely different uptempo version was pure Rock n Roll. Two totally versions done brilliantly in their unique original style.
@@popland1977 To say He "just" benefited from racism ,that's called Afro-centrism. A system of cancelling all(Presley's) influences, apart from Black influences. Desired result: Convincing the feeble minded there was no other component to His career than black influences. It's a Political tool Weaponized against Him. White 1950's racists from ,due to fear(threat to segregation) made Presley's Black influence the ONLY "talking point" about Him. Yet, He recorded more genres ,in His first year alone, than any POP artists before Him. Ironically, the end product of both white Supremacy ,& Afrocentric reverse-propaganda, weaponizes Presley's Black influences against Him. Conclusion: BOTH white racism & Afro-centrism creates CRAP music Journalism. To say His path to stardom was made easier due to the fact He was white, we can agree on that. To say Presley was a like-for-like scenario MUSICALLY ,with any of the Black Rock n Roll artists is utter shite. For e.g: How far would Presley have gotten off the back of Little Richard's set-list, an R&B-ONLY set-list, in the 1950's ? He had REGIONAL (not National) Hit's with His first single 'That's Alright Mama' ,a top 10 R&B Hit. Yet it the was the COUNTRY B-Side 'Blue Moon Of Kentucky' reached the Higher chart position, the COUNTRY single was the bigger Regional Hit. No one know's that because Presley's Black influences are Politicized against Him. The issue surrounding Him is too toxic. His "BREAKTHROUGH" Hit (Heartbreak Hotel) was written by white Country songwriter MAE AXTON. That's the song helped Him crossover from Regional-only charts to the TOP 100/Hit Parade($$$). Then His most prolific HIT songwriters($$$) were Leiber&Stoller, two white guy's from New York. Yet, Afrocentrism Gaslight's college students today His "stole" everything off Black artists ,He "built His career off the back of Black artists". I love the music genre of Rock n Roll so much I will point out these facts, it's not difficult for me to the do so, I know the track-lisitings of all the artists Black & White, Love them all equally. Presley is NOT the "King" of Rock and Roll ,or any other bullshit 1950's Journalistic construction. Buddy Holly ,Eddie Cochran ,Little Richard ,Chuck Berry are as much King's as anyone. LASTLY ,for perspective: Presley being "called" King of RnR meant nothing other than King of POPULAR MUSIC(AKA 1950’s Pop music) By 1956 ,the term "Rock n Roll" became Journalists shorthand for ALL teenagers POP music of the Hit Parade/POP charts. In part, due to DJ & Promoter ALAN FREED. 1950's Rock and Roll is from a DIFFERENT wider music gene pool than it’s 1940's previous incarnations.
There's no need to compare this to the Elvis version, other than to say they are both different in style and, obviously, vocals. Let's all just be glad we have both versions to listen to whenever we like. As for Beverley Knight, she is just outstanding.
Incredible as is anything Beverley Knight sings. For those mentioning Elvis, his version was based more on the version by Freddie Bell and the Bell Boys

Big Mama Thornton would have loved this. Tina's energy + Randy's sweetness + Whitney's pitching + Aretha's attitude + Mahalia's soul = Beverley Knight

Presley's recording was more musically interesting though. It's not all about the singer.

@@markr8326I actually think Elvis just benefited from the racist system
It was the USA No. 1 ? What? Thornton had a Hit on the TOP 100 POP charts(Hit Parade) ? You don't know what you're talking about.

it's actually being paralleled to the original by Big Mama Thornton
Fabulous 👏👏👏
Great pianist too, just saying :D
Jools is my favourite musician and the king of boogie woogie in my opinion. Such a talented musician and a great showman.
