You got it all pretty well, only thing (that is not that important for this video but a fact for the Vilgefortz fight ) is that Yennefer also says, that without Ciri's "help" (the explosion of Tor Lara) they would not have beaten Vilgefortz. So in the end it needed even more than just four party members to beat Vilgefortz. Damn I ove this antagonist
I think you missed to mention the "creational magic" or something similar that yennefer casted in "shard of ice" which was supposed to be difficult. Great vid though.
But serioisly, you depicted a lot more details than I remembered from the books and games! So, thank you for "refreshing my memory". Also, I appreciate your commitment to making witcher videos. :)
by the way, I don't think you mentioned in how pathetic a state yennefer was during the battle with our Rogeveenese champion. She had been imprisoned for a long time (months?), tortured and underfed. Also, completely unprepared for a fight. She might've been able to do better against him in peak condition.
When it comes to both of their age, If you take the Gwent journies into account, Yennefer would be born in 1173 while triss would be born in 1221. that would make their age at the beginning of the witcher 3 (set in 1272) at 99 for yennefer and 51 for triss
Oh I didn't know about Triss' journey thing, don't really play stand alone gwent anymore :( That has got to be a made up date by CDPR but apparently it's right in the middle of my "educated guesses" :)
Definitely agree that Yen would beat Triss if they had to fight. Yen is considerably stronger than Triss in the games and the books. The Witcher 3 makes it pretty clear just how strong Yen is just by showing what she's able to do vs what Triss is able to do. Even if Triss was somehow just as strong as Yennefer, I still think Yen would probably come out on top based on her experience alone and how she is as a person. I also think Triss' lack of confidence will let her down in a fight against Yen too because you can't be second guessing yourself in a fight when every moment wasted matters.
Triss has already said herself in the books that Yen is more powerful. After failing to help Ciri she says Geralt needs to ask Yen, and states she is more gifted, and more experienced. So it’s already clear. But on top of that Yen was also the youngest member of the Council Of Wizards, aced all her exams, and has performed a lot of feats. Such as turning a bunch of people into animals with just one foot. Teleporting away from the Lodge’s castle, which was supposed to be impossible as Philippa spent a while putting a barrier up. Fought off the Wild Hunt in Hirundum. Held her own briefly against the most op mage in the books despite being weakened from torture. Aside from Vilgefortz and the old mages like Tissaia, Francesca, and Philippa, Yen is probably the most powerful.
@@timmorris2048 She’d have to do something very drastic for her to do anything like that. Yen isn’t as evil as some believe. Geralt just up and left her and never saw her until 4yrs later. Yet despite her claims that she hasn’t got revenge on him because she only recently abandoned it, she’s always kept an eye on him, helped him, and could of easily got revenge if she wanted to. But she didn’t. A Dwarf that was part of a group that was gonna r**e her ran into her and she didn’t do anything but curse at him. After learning Triss slept with Geralt she just gave her a stern telling off about it and then moved on from it. Triss also did nothing, or betrayed her depending on how you look at it, regarding Geralt & Ciri, yet she didn’t get revenge on that either. Dorregaray (fellow mage) subtly insulted her and poked at the fact she is barren like most sorceress’s, but unlike them she is really upset about that. Yet despite her claim to Geralt that the guy is in trouble, she doesn’t do anything to him either.
@@whitewolf7454 Yes, but we are talking about a fight, and for a fair assessment and analysis you have to take into account the full capabilities of both combatants. As an example, the US, China, and Russia can throw nukes. In all three cases it would take an extreme situation most likely, but the ability to must be factored in. I know the US military does, especially when talking about a land war in Asia. Hell, that was the entire crux of out Fulda Gap defense strategy. Hold the Soviets in place until we could seal the gap with nukes. The end mission for the Fulda brigade was to DiP.
Triss is meant to play as a sister roll for ciri and Yennefer is like a mother to her. The game creators want you to pick Yen but they make it possible to pick Triss just because it's a game about choices.
@@zebastianosterlin7987 I'm not sure how much thought the game creators had already given to the plot of W3 when they were making W1 and 2, and in W1 and 2 they certainly seem to want you to pick Triss. It's more like in W3 they brought back Yen because of the Ciri plotline and to please the books fans while up until that point Triss was the default romance choice.
@@BigUriel Yen is hes true love but he got amnesia and triss knew about him and yen but chose to not tell him and use him for her gains. He has amnesia in the books and he get small fractions back over time, in the Witcher 1 and 2 he still don't remember Yen. Geralt and Triss feels weird when someone picks her over Yen.
@@zebastianosterlin7987 I am aware. My point is that the game devs really tried to make the player choose Triss as the love interest in the first two games. When it came to the third a lot of players were already invested in Triss, it doesn't look to me like the devs necessarily want you to pick Yen at all, if they do they're kind of sociopathic in the way they make you fall in love with one woman and then want you to dump her and get with someone else. If anything the games, and especially the third one, seem to really tempt the player to just sleep with as many women as possible. Which is actually very much in character for Geralt lol
@@death-thresh9548 i think its been confirmed that it will happen, but they havent started developing it yet, only after cyberpunk multiplayer. so yea it will probably be a thing but not for at least another 5 years
it would definitely be cool if you could choose between playing a young witcher or a young sorcerer. differing playstyles with different stories that eventually converge etc.
I think there is a strong argument which you haven't mentioned. Namely that Yennefer has been tortured for months and months in the worst possible ways, including methods which Vilgefortz thought were impossible to endure and on top of that the nutrition he gave her was mild at best and she was constantly weakened by dimetrium chains. Yet, literally *immediately* after being freed, the first thing she did was to fight Vilgefortz with Geralt, even in an extremely weakened state like that. So I think it's actually quite worth mentioning that she was still able to somewhat hold on against him and survive that nasty spell she was hit by. In a fresh state she can obviously do much more than that. And before that she clashed with Vilgefortz and it was even worth calling it a brief duel, despite the fact that Yennefer was completely caught by surprise and ambushed by Vilgefortz. And I think it's also worth mentioning that the Wild Hunt couldn't break Yennefer's barrier despite having elven sorcerers with them like Caranthir, which means it must be ridiculously powerful.
I think it’s clear the person who does these videos does not like Yennefer! Any chance he gets he’s downing her character while trying to give her a compliment. It’s sounds like it hurts him to say anything nice about her. It’s also clear he loves Triss and any chance he gets he praises her. Which is fine but at the same time stuff like this should be balanced in praise and prejudice for all characters.
Oh come on, Yen fought Vilgefortz after months of torture. Certainly if she was in better shape she would be much more of a challenge to him in that fight.
Vilgefortz didn’t learn magic until he was already an adult, unlike most who start at like 13. But he had innate talent for magic as his mother was a sorceress. This, along with his desire for power resulted in him being the most powerful mage in the books. He was also pretty young too being around Yennefer’s age. I agree Yen was severely weakened due to malnourishment and torture, but even if she was fresh she’d still lose to him. She’d hold her own, but would eventually lose. Yen is a prodigy, aced her exams, and is the youngest member of the Council. Sheala, a feared sorceress around Philippa’s age gave Yen’s magical talent props. Aside from Vilgefortz and the the mages who are 300+ she is likely the most powerful.
played the wild hunt before reading any of the books and romanced and like yen. then I read the books and played the wild hunt again and didn't romance anyone except for that skeilaga women you beat in a swordfight.
You know, that is actually pretty hard to do. I mean the whole thing about conjuring a living being, and then subjecting to your own will. If she does that just for messing around, what does she do when she _isnt_ messing around?
There are much more reasons, first of all she is older and much stronger. But with the necromancy it is also not quite like that - the game very strongly emphasizes that Yen was ready for absolutely everything to save her foster daughter (just like in the books when she was ready for everything, despite the goddess Freia warning how much she would have to suffer, she set herself as the bait, withstood long tortures, etc.). Even for her, however, it is something unusual, it does not mean that she does that every day. While the scene with Triss shows as a contrast that she is not ready for everything, alludes to her cowardice, but also to her weakness as a sorceress - Triss was the weakest of all the mages shown in the books.
@@HarGar True. Yen will do literally _everything_ to help Ciri and Geralt (though he can take care of himself pretty well). That is one of the reasons I pick her over Triss, absolute dedication to the goal.
I absolutely have to mention that in a private conversation with Geralt on Thanedd, Vilgefortz reveals he TOO was born by a mage (His father) and he acknowledges Geralt is much the same (mother is a sorceress). Had Geralt been raised as a mage/sorcerer he might have been more powerful and Vilgefortz offers to teach him. Geralt declines. Also it is important to mention that during the Yen, Geralt, Regis vs Vilgefortz she had just been freed from dimeritium and torture. The fact SHE DID fight was insane
18:18 I think I can explain that. In original polish version this line is "Merigold nas osłoni" which in my opinion stands more like for "Merigold will cover us" (with those fireballs) while Wild Hunt was chasing the Witchers. So I think it's a little translation mistake but I wanted to explain that here :) Greetings Letalis, amazing video
A word regarding Lydia's jaw, I just discovered this re-reading blood of elves. It is mentioned that the way she got the "damage" was by activating a cursed artifact, and it's specifically pointed out that the damage had resisted magical means of regeneration they tried on her. Meaning, as it is implied, magic could normally be used to treat and restore even this kind of damage from a person. (And I'm convinced that the survivors of Sodden had much worse body damage they were healed from). Lydia is forced to use an illusion simply because her wound is special/cursed and resists healing.
Honestly, this was a foregone conclusion just from the age gap. Although, there IS a limit to being a stronger sorcerer/sorceress with being older. See Gerhart of Aelle, the oldest living mage before the Thanedd coup, whose heart literally gave up in the middle of battle. Also, as far as Triss' fireballs at Kaer Morhen go, I'm pretty sure I got hit by 1 once... So if she's shielding them, she does a shit job of it
Regarding Geralts age...There is a contradiction in the books themselves. According to short stories Geralt should be around 40-60 ish(Nenekke knew Geralt as a boy and Nenneke is normal human) and in the novels he is around a century. Its one of many contradictions in the books.
Nenekke is a ‘’magical” herbalist with access to other magic and even divine power and rituals in the books. It would not be strange at all if she were able to extend the duration of her life significantly. Its heavily implied that this is the case in the last few voice of reason chapters.
While Triss is a great person, Yen is the clear choice here. It's clear Ciri sees Geralt as a father figure and Yen as a mom. Triss is more like a bigger sister for her.
@F G2000 True but the games had to cater to a much wider audience than the readers of the book so they had to add in some likeability. But I'd say both of them have their moments
I'm not sure about Ciri thinking on Triss as her bigger sister. I remember that on the books she is very jealous of her around Geralt and on the games she seems disappointed when you choose the red one. Even Phillipa mocks about how Triss is trying to pretend to be a sister of her just to sleep with Geralt.
Tho I know that Phillipa is not exacly the person that you should take in consideration always, but she knows Triss very well, just like Yennefer does.
My first thought regarding triss' scars are that being arcane in nature makes them harder to cover up than simple freckles or even a severe facial disfigurement.
I believe it is already compeleted. I know Letalis made a video about it but it is still debatable. If I remember correctly in Blood of Elves (3rd book) Phillipa and Geralt know each other from the past. After Dandelion learned they had history he started to think they were a couple or not. In conclusion he said that he could never guess who Geralt bed with (he said this after Geralt slept with Shani whom Geralt just met for a hour ago)
In the Books Yennefer is stronger. She is older, and more experienced, thats why Geralt asks her in book 3 to be a mentor to Ciri. In the games, i think she is stronger too, but not that much. Maybe if the world gets a timeskip, she can close the gap.
Shani can die very sooner than Geralt because of his mutations, while Triss and Yen are practically immortals and don't get older physically. I think there is no doubt about that, no Shani bois
I’d really like a Witcher 4 game as a young Witcher or sorceress, learning the ropes at the schools and then dealing with the consequences of being different. Like, all the power comes at a cost. I’d want to see more of that
@5:30 - (ಥ﹏ಥ) my boy... @9:38 - I go with *Rye*(like the bread)-ance : taken from the Audiobooks. You'll hear a variety of his name in my upcoming video ;)
I believe Triss purposefully leaves the scars there. Whether as a reminder of those friends she lost at Sodden, or a badge of honour for her personally, or just a reminder of who she is - a similar way Yennefer wants her scarred wrists to remain in the show before her enchantment, ultimately I believe the reason it’s never mentioned about why she didn’t remove the scars is because she intended to keep them.
@@xLetalis It's kinda ambiguous. Yes, there is the famous line: "You can hardly see the marks. But I will never wear a plunging neckline again, Geralt. Never." On the other hand, the marks are a reminder of who she is now. That she is capable of overcoming her fears and fight, if it's necessary. "I’m not a little girl from a tiny tower in Maribor any more. Damn it, I’m Triss Merigold, the Fourteenth One Killed at Sodden." "And if the need arises, I’ll stand on the Hill again. Because if I don’t, it will make the sacrifices made the first time futile and unnecessary."
theres also the problem none of the potions she can use can heal her up enough, after all if someone cast a healing spell on her she will suffer a very powerful allergy reaction
@@xLetalis dude, you know what? No one can steal your videos because the moment one sees Geralt selling Ciri or fighting dozens of Yennefers, UA-cam will automatically know that it's an xLetalis video and give the video stealer a copyright strike automatically lol.
Yennefer is older and knows more different kinds of magic, she is likely to have a far wider range of spells, but from what we see in the games her arsenal is not really about offensive magic when compared to Triss. Triss limits herself more, but most of her magic seems to have the goal of messing up opponents, she was in famous battles killing countless enemy soldiers, getting hit by other mages offensive magic, but surviving these harsh battles, which means she is durable too. During the wild hunt encounter, Triss kills most of the invading army with big nuke type of spells, while Yennefer focuses on defensive magic, which to me is both of them playing into their strengths. Hard to say what would really happen, Yennefer is more experienced and has a more varied use of spells, but Triss is undeniably more capable when it comes to cause a lot of damage, and we have no real way to know how Yennefers defensive spells would hold up against the nukes from Triss. What would most likely lead to Yennefer winning though is that she is a cold hearted ghoul of a woman with no conscience and no ethical or moral limitations that could stop her from using any kind of magic, including forbidden magic, to get what she wants, while Triss is more resembling of an actual human being in that regard, so Yennefer is more likely to win.
Great video! I can never get enough of The Witcher, which leads me to the next point: We might get some interesting pieces of lore on July 9th, there's a witchercon (the first of its kind) apparently. Hopefully we will get an AMA or something of sort
the video i've been waiting for is finally here! thank you for your witcher content bro, i still cant understand how you're able to post more witcher content to this day!
Right after I read the first book of Witcher, where Geralt try to save Yen from Djinn, I was surprised by the power of Yen during the fight between them, I can sense that Yen do have the ability to kill Geralt as I now understand why in game Witcher 3, Vesemir, lambert told Geralt to stay away from the sorceresses because they are extremely powerful mage and as you said in the video, even though they are very powerful, killing is not their first choice not like Witcher which is born to kill monsters of course human sometimes.
I agree that Yennefer would've won, mainly because she's determined enough and isn't shackled by some notions of familiar/friendly obligation that Triss would be. I don't think Triss would attack Yennefer. Yen would have to take the initiative, and if Yennefer was in a position to take that initiative, she'd be willing to do whatever it took to win. Triss would more likely try to reason with her, escape, or keep her at bay with offensive magic. Yennefer would try to outright destroy her. The only chances that Triss might have would be if Geralt literally stood in front of her to shield her (Yennefer less likely to attack Triss if her love is standing in a compromising and dangerous position)..or if Geralt talked her out of the fight (probably using Ciri and Triss' relationship as leverage.). I guess if Ciri got between Yen and Triss, Yennefer would also call off her attacks. But, I can't think of any time when Triss would actively take initiative to attack Yennefer. Maybe if Triss was being magically controlled by someone else... The two ladies obviously have beef with one another, but neither have actively taken the other on for it. Geralt is a problem for them both, but I still think there's care and even love between Triss and Yennefer. It would take a lot for them to go at one another. IF they did, it would possibly be without planning...just something that happened and set it off without expecting it. And if that were the case, Triss *might* get the upperhand initially. Her magic is extremely powerful, but somewhat chaotic. However, I still think Yennefer would win in the end.
Just look at their Gwent standalone cards. Triss summons a few fireballs, and gives arrows wings. Yen conducts and fires lightnings, while summoning a tornado, conjures fire beams, causes massive earthquakes with one move of a hand. I think video should be re-titled to: How many Trisses is one Ye worth?
It would be an interesting battle, but I agree with the conclusion. Yen's determination, experience and calmness would overdo Triss' more chaotic style. She's still young and can learn a lot, but needs a mentor to help as well. Yen herself can actually be a good one, but if Triss wants to learn quicker, Phillipa would be the best choice. Despite always having her own agenda, having an ally in Triss, Phillipa could actually make her a powerhouse. But I am not sure if a fully powered Triss would be able to defeat Yen at that point, because it's not that only Triss can try to improve. Yen is always trying to learn new things to get better. Her reasons are usually for her loved ones, but I doubt she can sit still for years :p Overal: very nice video with well thought arguments for both. Again, my bet will be on Yen. Now let's see if you mix Ciri in there when she has more control over her Elder Blood powers :p Oh wait, you can't, because you sold her again XD
Glad you mentionned the lack of focus or control showcased by Triss. The battle in Witcher 3 game is a good example. She can actually hurt and I believe even kill you with her fireballs when you escape with Lambert. That shows poor control. Also, in the cut scene without Lambert shielding Geralt with Quen both of them would have been in serious trouble - at least injured.
Everyone is talking about triss vs yennefer but all i want is philipa romance when we catch her option to kiss her and in the elven ruins when she asks is foreplay that important to you we get the scene and just my little wish she gets her eyes back fully after that
I don't disagree I think Yennefer is levels above triss in skill and knowledge though could see Triss overwell Yennefer with a last ditch effort of magic even if they both died from it.
I was waiting so long for this video to crack some pop corn and eat while watching it. BIG THANKS TO YOU FOR YOUR TIME TO MAKE THIS VIDEO. MUCH RESPECT 🙏
Hi xLetalis I just found another thing I didn't know in the witcher 3. When you first meet with Jonny he will lead you to a mountain to get his voice back. Here comes the interesting part. If you get the botle before meet with Jonny Geralt will say a different line. It's a small but funny thing.
This is like asking for example whos stronger 1v1 in dragonball Z after the sayan saga: Goku or Krillin? Technically they both never faced each other so we don't have direct proof and also Krillin can make cool discs that can cut through anything, but it's pretty much obvious who would win. Tho I've only played games so idk maybe books are that significantly different that this is a debatable topic there
Amazing video of yours, like always! To be honest I put it like this: which one do you prefer to have an interesting coffee talk with? The answer is Yennefer why? Cuz she is way deeper and interesting character.
My play through are 1 - Why not both? 2 - Ahh , let's choose Yen. I want a mother for Ciri. 3 - Let's choose Triss, our dear darling. 4 - I'm a sucker for women with horns. 5 - I don't want to choose at all. Gwent is the way. 6 - I miss Triss.
I recently finished the books, and in the fight scene between the townspeople and Triss/Yen, it sounded to me like "Triss's Hailstorm" had something to do with both sorceresses' magic combined. And that Yennefer's hands were damaged created another factor in the storm spell. Not sure if anyone else picked up on that, just curious!
The spell was cast by both of them together. Triss was never able to cast such a high-power spell later, best she did was a few meteors in the battle of KM, and while Yen did come pretty close with that shield barrier in the same battle, it was still not that powerful. It could also be that Triss had a ton of power that she just doesnt know how to use yet, she is the youngest mage anyway, and that it needed to be "focused" by some older mage to cast it such a spell It is a pretty interesting topic, too bad there isnt enough info on that.
I dont think vilgefortz can deal with the unseen elder, if i'm not remembering it wrong, in the books when geralt fought vilgefortz, he could see holes in vilgefortz defense, but everytime he tried to exploit it vilgefortz managed to counter attack, this means that geralt, even tho he isnt doing much, he's actually standing ground against vilgefortz, meanwhile geralt cant last a second against the unseen elder, basically oneshotted, and this is when geralt is at his strongest. (considering geralt fight with vilgefortz was before the events of the game)
It’s my first time playing Witcher 3 next gen and I met Triss, I think I like her more than Yen. Both beautiful gorgeous women, but there’s something about Triss that I like more. Must be her personality
Am I the only one here who thinks Triss would win? I have no doubt that Yennefer has a greater array of magical knowledge than Triss and is skilled in a wider variety of spells. However, in the few mage versus mage fights we do see in the books and games, the winner is usually determined by low level aggression, surprise, and the use of fire magic (which seems to be the preferred weapon in magical conflict). I mean, Yennefer gets wrecked by Vilgefortz, who proceeds to barbecue a powerful higher vampire. Yennefer also gets blinded by Fringilla at Sodden Hill; I feel it is implied in their conversation that this was also the fireball that burns Triss beyond recognition and leaves her howling in pain atop her dead friends, who were literally blown apart by the explosion. Anyhow, Triss seems to be way more suited for this sort of encounter. If anything, she seems to be a master of fire magic. My head canon is that it's how she copes with her trauma. Sorta like how people who are abused in a certain way act out this abuse on others. Not sure if Yennefer's taser fingers and shields can do much, given even Fringilla beat her (then again, Fringilla only retaliated because Yennefer cast a spell that ripped apart her friend).
Yeah. Triss is only in her 40s while Yen is almost 100 years old. Of course Yen is more dangerous but also Triss is recognized as a prodigy so given a few decades she could became as strong as Yen, if not stronger.
I’m pretty sure Yen was considered a prodigy and got recognition from Tissaia de Vries in her youth and later on so I don’t believe Triss could come close to her power, but nothin is certain ig
Thanks for another Witcher video. This was really fun to watch. I think in the books they make it more clear in most parts that Yen is definitely more powerful between the two of them. They make it less obvious in the games, but I'm still favoring Yen on that one as well, slightly. I missed the original poll which was asked before, so I'm not sure if this was asked there, but who would win between the book Geralt (by the time of Lady of the Lake book) vs Leo Bonhart? Geralt's leg/knee was hurt badly after his first fight with Vilgafortz, and while Dryads tried treating it, he continued to suffer from it throughout his journey with his company. Fringilla helped regarding to some extent (i.e. taking the pain away if I remember correctly?), but that didn't mean it healed 100%. So less than 100% condition Geralt vs Bonhart, who claims to have killed 3 Witchers (school of Wolf, Cat, Griffin). Now that would be interesting.
Vilgefortz Is a Beast. Because he was a mercenary and a Warrior ed he Born so talented, like Itachi in Naruto. He can defeat the all Chapter by himself. He beat a High Vampire easily. So terrifing I love him 😥
If I remember correctly from the last time I read the books (English translation), Yen was very crippled during the final battle with Vilgefortz due to her torture. During her imprisonment, her fingers were repeatedly broken and allowed to heal wrongly before being broken again, which definitely hindered her magical ability. As for Triss, I think her nickname of bravery was meant to part of Sapkowski's ironic humor. Her hailstorm was an accident caused not by her bravery (as the masses and "future historians" believed), but by fear causing her lips to tremble and resulting in the words of the spell being jumbled and mispronounced.
It's true about Yen, I think I did mention the extensive torture in the video. As for the hailstorm, I'm pretty sure that the notion about her injured lips is more of a theory/rumor since it was said by someone who wasn't there at the time. But even if it is true - simply saying the right words isn't enough to produce powerful magic. Yennefer for example needed to know what kind of spells and words to use in order to save Uma, however I wouldn't say that a novice would've been able to do the same if they only have the right information.
There was one more confrontation, when yen was captured by vlgefortz, she can not even fought back a trap when she was all prepared for anything, still she loss not to vilgefortz directly but to the trap he set, far fron that site.
I'm surprised you mentioned Yen casting spells with her feet, but not what she did in that instance. As it's probably one of her best combat feats.(Sorry for the text blob, it just happens when I copy/paste out of Kindle for whatever reason) - "Sword of Destiny. The Bounds of Reason. VIII- 'Geralt!' Yennefer suddenly shouted, pulling up her bound legs and pushing them with a sudden thrust under the wagon, beneath the arms of the Witcher, which were bound and twisted behind him. 'The Igni Sign! Make it! Can you feel the rope? Cast the bloody thing!' 'Without looking?' Geralt groaned. 'I'll burn you, Yen!' 'Make the Sign! I can take it!' He obeyed, and felt a tingling in his fingers, which were forming the Igni Sign just above the sorceress's bound ankles. Yennefer turned her head away, biting down on her coat collar and stifling a moan. The dragonling, squealing, beat its wings beside her. 'Yen!' 'Make it!' she bellowed. Her bonds gave way in an instant, as the disgusting, nauseating odour of charred skin became unbearable. Dorregaray uttered a strange noise and fainted, suspended by his fetters from the wagon wheel. The sorceress, wincing with the pain, straightened up, lifting her now free leg. She screamed in a furious voice, full of pain and rage. The medallion on Geralt's neck jerked as though it were alive. Yennefer straightened her thigh, waved her foot towards the charging wagons of the Barefield constabulary, and shouted out a spell. The air crackled and gave off the smell of ozone. 'O, ye Gods,' Dandelion wailed in admiration. 'What a ballad this will be, Yennefer!' The spell, cast by her shapely little foot, was not totally effective. The first wagon - and everything on it - took on the yellow colour of a kingcup, which the Barefield soldiers in the frenzy of battle did not even notice. It did better with the second wagon, whose entire crew were transformed into huge, rough-skinned frogs, which hopped around in all directions, croaking comically. The wagon, now bereft of a driver, tipped over and fell apart. The horses, neighing hysterically, fled into the distance, dragging the broken shaft behind them. Yennefer bit her lip and waved her leg in the air again. The kingcup-yellow wagon suddenly dissolved into kingcup-yellow smoke to the sound of lively musical tones drifting down from above, and its entire crew flopped onto the grass, stupefied, forming a picturesque heap. The wheels of the third wagon went from round to square and the result was instant. The horses reared up, the wagon crashed over, and the Barefield constabulary were tipped out and thrown onto the ground. Yennefer, now driven by pure vindictiveness, flourished a leg ferociously and yelled out a spell, transforming the Barefielders randomly into turtles, geese, woodlice, flamingos and stripy piglets. The Zerrikanians expertly and methodically finished off the rest." - It's got good range, doesn't seem to be a projectile, and seems to be fast in taking effect. Unless Triss has some way to counteract it before it takes effect, she'd be pretty much hosed.
People consider that as a "retcon" by CDPR, I consider it as further evidence that the scars just aren't very visible in the first place, because magic was indeed used to remove them.
Actually, we would need to look at various scenarios: A planned war. A spontaneous fight A war of attrition. I would give the first to Yen and the second to Triss and wonder about the third...
1) Yen, since she has all the shielding and stuff 2) Interestingly, it is explained in book 3 that Yen can use melee weapons pretty well, especially short swords. If she carries a knife, a she usually does, it'd be quite a suprise for our dear darling Triss. 3) Dont really know
I knew the answer even before starting the video but I'm glad I watched it anyways because it was a great analysis, it made me remember a lot from the books. I agree with you, Yennefer is probably more than twice the age of Triss, she's been around for much more time which means way more experience, that doesn't mean Triss isn't powerful as show in the Rivian pogrom and later in the games, though. Clearly Philippa is even more powerful so that's going to be an interesting video, Ida being a Aen Saevherne is probably the most powerful sorceress because we don't really know the power of Francesca, so if you're going to continue with sorceress that will be interesting to see. Good thing you didn't included the Netflix's show, that's pretty much it's own canon since they changed everything.
@@xLetalis Yes she is, same as Francesca or Iorveth or pretty much all the elves sharing the same world as Geralt. The Aen Elle are those elves who parted from that world and then conquered Tir ná Lia, the Wild Hunt and all of that.
Yennifer is more powerful "at the moment" simply because she is older, more experienced, but I think Triss has more raw power and potential but she isn't old enough or experienced enough to know how to fully use her power. just my opinion.
Not even 1 minute into the video, and Ciri has already been sold... never gets old!

Haven't re-read the books before making this video so if I got a detail or 2 wrong, forgive me Doubt it will make a drastic difference!
Honestly the magic in the series is a bit tough to say witch is more powerful

Yen is canonly older than Gerald (i think it was 20 years but don't pin me on that) who's stated at almost hundred by Vesemir

"Yen, why do we have to fi-" **dies**
Don't forget that Yen is also willing to go places magically that Tris won't. She'd pull Tris' soul out, turn it into a ring, and walk away whistling.
As much as I personally prefer Triss, Yen is the stronger of the two.
@@BigUriel Yen is hes true love but he got amnesia and triss knew about him and yen but chose to not tell him and use him for her gains. @@BigUriel Witcher 1 -3 is after the Witcher books so the games continues the books.
@@zebastianosterlin7987 I am aware. My point is that the game devs really tried to make the player choose Triss as the love interest in the first two games. If anything the games, and especially the third one, seem to really tempt the player to just sleep with as many women as possible. Which is actually very much in character for Geralt lol

@@jamillajohnson6108 I mean it is a bit of a meme over here to throw some shade on Yen.

I so agree with this. I thought the same when he mentionned her role in the fight. Imprisonned and shackled with dimetrium
Fair point. Ripped our finger nails, bruised, bloody, beaten, etc. would have hindered her. However, it wouldn’t have let her defeat Vilgefortz
it's possible but sadly we'll never know :(
@@xLetalis Dear Melitele, the king has replied!

Yes …I agree
But... we all know my fav'rite type o' magic... leezbooomaancyyy
I was also thinking this.
In a dire situation Triss can snap but Yen can cross those boundaries from the get-go
There are much more reasons, first of all she is older and much stronger.

It's clear Ciri sees Geralt as a father figure and Yen as a mom. Triss is more like a bigger sister for her.
Yes even Triss herself calls her lil sis.

In a duel between those 2, Yennefer would always win. However, Triss will always win my heart

It's been a few years since I read the books so thanks for refreshing me on some of the lore haha great video as always!
MY FAVORITE TYPE OF MAGIC.

Yes. Or Gwent.
In fact, that would be sort of a magic duel as well, who can cheat better and more effectively.
Her reasons are usually for her loved ones, but I doubt she can sit still for years :p
Overal: very nice video with well thought arguments for both. Again, my bet will be on Yen. Now let's see if you mix Ciri in there when she has more control over her Elder Blood powers :p Oh wait, you can't, because you sold her again XD
Thank you for the comment ;]
Glad you mentionned the lack of focus or control showcased by Triss. The battle in Witcher 3 game is a good example. She can actually hurt and I believe even kill you with her fireballs when you escape with Lambert. That shows poor control. Also, in the cut scene without Lambert shielding Geralt with Quen both of them would have been in serious trouble - at least injured.
What we really want to know is which one of them would win in a match of gwent
Shani ;]
Everyone is talking about triss vs yennefer but all i want is philipa romance when we catch her option to kiss her and in the elven ruins when she asks is foreplay that important to you we get the scene and just my little wish she gets her eyes back fully after that
Triss would win........
.....muh heart
I wasn't surprised
TEAM YENNEFER
To add: I don't hate Triss at all, I just prefer Yennefer a bit more.
MUCH RESPECT 🙏
my pleasure, glad it was worth the wait ;]
Shhhh, I'm trying to find Triss's other ear ring from this hypothetical battle you've concocted
I think I've done it this way, but never showed it in a video ;]
Vilgeforz was awesome. A true antagonist.
Cuz she is way deeper and interesting character.
fair enough ;]
+1
For a cup of tea or coffee triss is better obviously
My play through are
1 - Why not both?
It could also be that Triss had a ton of power that she just doesnt know how to use yet, she is the youngest mage anyway, and that it needed to be "focused" by some older mage to cast it such a spell
It is a pretty interesting topic, too bad there isnt enough info on that.
I think Lambert meant Triss would shield them with the fire
I've got a paper due in 3 hours but this is obviously more important
good luck ;]
The herbs schmerbs part cracked me up :D :D spot on
Bro we should have Vilgefortz vs the Unseen Elder
They're too OP to measure :D
There’s no world anyone except gaunter is beating the unseen elder.
My favorite type of magic, and getting money from Emhyr, cannot be missed in any videos.
In the game Triss has big fire, Yen can generate big shields. I guess it depends who can get their magic off first.
It’s my first time playing Witcher 3 next gen and I met Triss, I think I like her more than Yen. Both beautiful gorgeous women, but there’s something about Triss that I like more. Must be her personality
So, in which moment there's a clip of Uma's romance, so I can skip it and not have nightmares tonight?
think it's midway through :D
@@thegwynbleidd4202 we will never know for sure.
I told you this would be an exciting video! Well done @xLetalis.
hey, thank you :)
So terrifing
I love him 😥
If I remember correctly from the last time I read the books (English translation), Yen was very crippled during the final battle with Vilgefortz due to her torture.
6:02 I see what is going on here
I'm surprised you mentioned Yen casting spells with her feet, but not what she did in that instance. As it's probably one of her best combat feats.(Sorry for the text blob, it just happens when I copy/paste out of Kindle for whatever reason)

"Sword of Destiny. The Bounds of Reason. VIII-
'Geralt!' Yennefer suddenly shouted, pulling up her bound legs and pushing them with a sudden thrust under the wagon, beneath the arms of the Witcher, which were bound and twisted behind him. The Zerrikanians expertly and methodically finished off the rest."

It's got good range, doesn't seem to be a projectile, and seems to be fast in taking effect. Unless Triss has some way to counteract it before it takes effect, she'd be pretty much hosed.
About triss’ scars and the fact that she can’t wear deeply cut dresses, what about the dlc dress she has?
People consider that as a "retcon" by CDPR, I consider it as further evidence that the scars just aren't very visible in the first place, because magic was indeed used to remove them.
maybe shielding in there is like saving time for them to escape in castle by raining fire on wild hunt?
could be yes
Actually, we would need to look at various scenarios:
A planned war.
A spontaneous fight
A war of attrition.
I would give the first to Yen and the second to Triss and wonder about the third...
I kinda touch on that in the end
1) Yen, since she has all the shielding and stuff
2) Interestingly, it is explained in book 3 that Yen can use melee weapons pretty well, especially short swords. If she carries a knife, a she usually does, it'd be quite a suprise for our dear darling Triss.
3) Dont really know
he clearly states near the beginning that it's about who would win in a straight-up duel so no we don't need to look at various scenarios
14:24 , it seems that it's not just Geralt who thinks about doing those things in his spare time ...
Thank you, btw Ida is Aen Seidhe right? :)
