Look at the history of any combat sport, the most polarizing guys are the biggest stars. Mayweather, mcgregor, hogan, masvidal, jon jones, john cena, even roman reigns gets mixed reactions now as a heel and hes the biggest star in wrestling. Punk got the most passionate reaction anyone in aew has gotten all year, that is a huge positive.

I was there, it was pretty split. The people booing were just trying to drown out the people cheering or chanting CM Punk, they would start booing as soon as a chant started before the show. But there was the part during the match where the "Let's go Switchblade, CM Punk" chant was slightly in favour of Punk. It was quite the reaction, but a lot of fun, because people even resorted to cheering for the Gunns. 😂

That really doesn't matter at least to me. I'm Canadian and I'd cheer literally any other wrestler over Punk. I get why people like him, he's Edgy, he speaks his mind. But if I'm being honest, there are so many red flags against him that I just can't like him. AEW has bent over backwards to hire him and then protect him, which from a business perspective makes sense. He made them a ton of money.
But everything else is just bizarre. He didn't bother to come back to wrestling until AEW approached him with a multi-million dollar contract, and suddenly he's all "I came back to wrestle these young talent and help them get over"? I don't buy it for a second. But that could me just being cynical. I just look at wrestlers like Jericho and Danielson who got people like Takeshita over and its night and day.
How much of it is scripted, how much isn't, I have no idea, but its a consistent throughout his career.
