Make a gym energy drink with "electrolytes".

- When you can see past the hype and buzz-words, a typical gym energy drink is just a standard high-sugar fruit flavoured drink with a pinch of salt to replace "electrolytes" lost through sweat.
By making your own you save lots of money, get a fully customisable drink and avoid adding hundreds of plastic bottles to landfill every year.
For a 500ml or 16oz bottle you will need:-
3 or 4 heaped teaspoons of standard white sugar.
A pinch of standard table salt.
Half a level teaspoon of citric acid.
Half a level teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda / sodium bicarbonate / baking soda.
Optionally you can add a drip or two of concentrated flavouring and food colour if you want.
Put all the ingredients in a plastic drinking bottle and top it up with cold water, then put it in the fridge until needed.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-

I just chow down on an electrolytic capacitor when I'm on the 'mill.
You couldn't resist could you?
Why are you like this?
Snolferd A combination of nature and nurture I suppose. I was brought up in NE Scotland in the middle of a field. I quickly latched onto the internet as a source of entertainment and have grown up with a deep understanding and appreciation for the textual, digital humour that the internet is prone to.
Does that answer your question?
Snolferd Maybe you should try a Coolaid instead. Triac oolaid.
Rabbi Zyklon Brausebadstein Perfection
And when clive as finished with his electrolyte drink. He will then show you how to turn the bottle into a nice looking L.E.D Buttplug useing a 555 timer and a Power film capacitor. LOL
Alan Reader and warm white LEDs.
Straw hat ones, with molex connectors.
- with a capacitor dropper power supply of course (and maybe LED illuminated mushrooms inside for effect??)
I used a different kind acid for my drink, seeing weird stuff happening around me. Gives alot of energy though.
I think Clive could record making a Pot Noodle, and I'd enjoy it. Love these vids!
it's rude to tell a bottle it has a handycap! :)
Jesus Christ...
looooooool
It's handi-capable.
BOTTLE FEELINGS MATTER!
Take my thumbs up and get out of my life.
Brando, its got electrolytes. It's got what Plants CRAVE!
Though if you think about it that movie was preaching a rather medieval picture of heredity. The stupid peasants will always be stupid peasants which is why you, my son, must pick one of you 6 first cousins to be your wife, to maintain our brilliant stock. Personally I'd choose Mary as she is also your aunt and that makes her a double good choice.
The film is about apathy, the idiocracy stuff is just a conceit to get there.
BigDirtyBasterd that movie was brilliant imo
Magnesium is also a good idea to add.
You lose a lot through sweat, and most people are already deficient in it.
Food-grade magnesium citrate is fairly cheap as a bulk powder, you can also buy magnesium sulphate in the form of epson salts. (But disclaimer, magnesium sulphate is easier to overdose on and doing so can be dangerous.)
Epsom salts are also a laxitive in some amounts.
You're right about the magnesium. Even though I'm not very active, I still was a bit deficient. Let me tell you, I was getting neck cramps all the time before I started taking a tiny amount of magnesium, in the form of a multivitamin/mineral powder. I just put a hint into some juice about every day, and I'v not had a problem since. May have been also lacking in B12, which it also has.
It's only sodium. You need potassium too. An imbalance between those electrolytes can cause cramps, spasms, and even a heart attack. So as an improvement to your recipe, I'd suggest substituting the table salt with something like Morton Lite Salt, which is 50/50 sodium chloride/potassium chloride. You only need 1 level teaspoon per litre, max.
And I'd skip the baking soda, because that's just adding more sodium. Citric acid is fine by itself for a bit of zing. Together they react to form sodium citrate, water, and carbon dioxide. So if you don't want the fizz, don't bother. But if you do, make sure to take into account the extra sodium from baking soda.
When I was boxing we had a talk by some University of Birmingham sports science students and they were talking about isotonic/sports drinks and how you could make your own version. It was essentially half a bottle of orange juice (from concentrate or not, don't think it mattered), topped up with tap water and a pinch of salt. Bit weird drinking it at first but by crikey it was amazing stuff.
Its got what plants want.
Why not just drink water?
No, he's making a reference to idiocracy.
'batin
I like money though

Very refreshing to see food/drink related videos! very interesting. Can you make more of these DIY food/drinks videos?
The point of the sugar isn't just to provide burned energy. The sugar and sodium are co-transported across your membranes creating a concentration gradient that draws water in by osmosis. Adding the salt and sugar increases the efficiency that you absorb the water.
Very handy to know...thank you!
I do the same for bike rides with lemon juice instead of citric acid
Great work
As usual Top notch stuff
By adding electrolytes, this also doubles as a better conductor in case you want to pour it over a power strip. More electrolytes means more electricity means more fun.
codebeard bit like Jeremy Clarkson's motto "MORE POWERRRRRR!!!"
To o0julek0o: I think you mean Tim (The Tool Man) Taylor / Allen?
I like to add 2 table spoons of pure lemon and one table spoon of apple cider vinegar. Enjoying this drink since you uploaded the video, cheers.
Outstanding
I don't know whether you'd be up for it or not but I would love to see
you construct a single transistor amplifier or just a pre-amp. From what
I know I don't think you have done it yet and I think it would be cool
to see your take on it.
Nothing beats the taste and the goodness of filtered water, once you get used to it!
Please tell me about mass of sodium bicarbonate and citric acid used in this energy drink.
You mentioned that if you have soft tap water you can add it straight to it, would you need to do anything extra if you lived in a hard water area?
WAC-ade
I have made quite a few for these, works well and replaces what your
losing. Potassium, sodium/salt, water. Makes about one gallon, would cut
it down but I don't know how to get 1/2 a pack of Koolade.
1/3 Cup lemon juice (not lemonade)
1/8 teaspoon backing soda
Mix these two first. Will fizz up quite a bit. Makes citric salt, a "performance enhancer" that is needed by the body.
1 Cup sugar
1 pack Koolaid or Wyler's or Flavorade
1 teaspoon Morten's Lite Salt (mix of real salt and salt substitute)
You're the KING
I love your videos ☺
good tip
Welcome back to, Cooking with Clive!
Be honnest Clive, when the guys at the gym see a bearded giant starting to work the irons... are they scared of you?
It's not a big gym so we all kinda know each other.
+bigclivedotcom im more scared to find out what the plastic in that bottle contains lol! might not be all that safe to be reusable as most bottles like that sold.
bigclivedotcom how tall are you?
6' 4".
bigclivedotcom really? so me and you are the same height! i figured youd be taller by just a little bit
How do you work up a sweat on the Isle of Man, this time of year?
I just wear a plastic suit that funnels all my sweat into a bottle and drink that. Also has a nice zing
sounds kinda hot
(strictly in the temperature way)
Boredness jack ass did that one
Gym Fremen.
Better to use glucose rather than sucrose, for two reasons:
1. Glucose is absorbed directly into the intestine, vs. sucrose, which must be digested into glucose and galatose before absorbtion.
2. Glucose facilitates intestinal sodium absorbtion.
WOW!!!! I',m amazed how it tastes! Exactly the same as OSHEE I buyed today, but this is 40 times cheaper! It also remind me of that "magnesium pills" to disolve in water. Great1 THANKS!
Citric acid is something that you should always have at home. Works great as a descaler for the coffe machine. Or as a rust remover.
pretty much how I make mine! only I use pink himalayan salt, I love the mineral taste it gives, and a slice of lemon for flavor
Nice man I've stopped drinking v and red bull used to drink litres! Just have a expresso now! I'll make this next week for my bike ride and see how I go
lol, I saw this title and said, "that's stupid, just add salt to some water." And then I read the description! xD
Magnesium Sulphate Heptahydrate (Epsom Salt) is also another good easy to find additive to use as an electrolyte. Though be reasonable with the quantities of course...
You should just make a large quantity of it so you can just put a few scoops of the mix in to save even more time!
I really needed my bigclive fix
What about also adding a wee bit of potassium like that found in salt substitutes?
Even though I don't go to a gym, that is excellent.
Clive may I suggest that you try something that I given in hospital while I was fluid restricted and unable to drink very much.
It's called St Mark's solution, after the hospital that came up with the recipe.
Add to 1litre of tap water
20g or 6 level 5ml teaspoons Glucose powder.
2.5g or 1 heaped 2.5ml half teaspoon sodium bicarbonate.
3.5g or 1 5ml teaspoon of sodium chloride (salt)
hey big man... can you recommend an RGB LED floodlight that comes with a driver, and is easily controlled with a micro controller, i need one for a project im currently working on and it would be nice if it was cheap as well.. if there is no such thing, can LED strips imitate floodlights?
It might be worth looking at a small DMX controlled LED PAR can.
BCDC it's too late this year, but can you show how to make tomato sauce from fresh tomatoes? just tossed 10lbs or so of bad tomatoes...
Clive, will you make a Paleo version? ;)
I like you!! Subbed!!!
I forget if I've commented already, but my dad makes something similar. He puts some combination of orange juice, lemon juice, water, sugar and salt in a bottle for when he goes biking. Tastes & works better than Gatorade from what I hear.
That's a good point about not making it taste too nice - I've similarly made it with weak Ribena, but I like Ribena so it's tempting to drink too much of it.
I'll just point out that the Gatorade you buy in the shops isn't the same pro-athletes use. I use a pre-mixed, pro version from an outdoor store. However, it's easy to make yourself: sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium are the main electrolytes you need (not just sodium). Bi-carb makes a nice kicker, as you say, and can supply your minor HCO3- needs.
You can get at least three of those in easily-absorbed powder form (I don't know about calcium, but you can take that in supplement form pretty easily). Oh, and sugar isn't really necessary unless you're doing 2+ hour stints at the gym-- usually, your diet will have adequate simple sugars.
Just a thought!
Nice
use dextrose because the structure more simpler... or combine both
What was the ingredients ??
I got a recipe online somewhere for a DIY "mohito" energy drink. Very similar salts and sugars to this (no rum) but its amazing. I recommend googling it. So nice.
wont bicarb+acid create more salt?
hey clive! i have an electricity question :s i've recently moved into a student flat and noticed that the switch on one of my plug sockets does nothing. it's just constantly on, what is wrong with it? (i'm not gonna fix it lol, just curious). i have an extension lead plugged into it so i unplug it whenever i leave the flat just in case. thank you for your videos too, i'm learning stuff!~
Sounds like a faulty socket! I would report it too the estates / Maintenance department!
Sometimes the physical switch is melted or broken and the pole is simply stuck in the ON position. That's all
i have a socket that wont turn off as well the spring in switch broke its clips needs a replacement but as i never turn it off ane way i do not see the point >.
I had a plug in my room that wouldn't turn on! The physically switch wouldn't budge, as though it was glued to the off position. It was very annoying when I noticed it.
OT but do you solder in your room? - I've heard student bedrooms have ridiculously sensitive smoke alarms. Student bedroom solder fume extractor might be an idea for a vid, ideally you'd need a flattish through-window exhaust pipe so you don't need to have the window open too wide in the winter letting all the heat out.
You could premix the compounds in a bigger container and when you need to prepare a drink, you can just use the premade stuff.
Its got what Big Clive craves!
I make something similar but i use more baking soda(but no salt) and after i mix it i let it sit in the bottle like half an hour so the fizz 'stick'
would icing sugar be better since itll dissolve faster ?
It does dissolve fast, but also makes the drink cloudy, which is still a good visual effect. (corn starch as an anti-caking agent.)
Thanks, Big Clive. I would recommend Honey or molasses instead of pure white sugar though. Healthier and tastier. And lemon juice instead of citric acid(For the same reason).
I use a 2 liter bottle and make a more flavorful version with a couple of other base salts added in (magnesium and potassium)and a bit less sugar.
1 level tsp each of sodium bicarbonate, dietary magnesium, potassium chloride (sold as a sodium free salt substitute), and sea salt. I add 3 level TBsp of sugar (equal to 9 tsp). For the citric acid and a strong flavor I add 2 packets of unsweetened KoolAid brand powdered drink mix (I use the cherry flavor).
If you are on *any* sort of reduced sodium diet you may want to discuss this with your doctor and change the recipe accordingly. Sodium bicarbonate has *1200* mg of sodium per teaspoon and regular salt is around 2400 mg of sodium per tsp. So, per half liter that puts Clive's recipe at about 800 mg of sodium and mine at 920 mg (the KoolAid has 40 mg of sodium per packet)
Sodium bicarbonate that is not neutralized by the citric acid into sodium citrate turns into salt in the body. The hydrochloric acid in your stomach combines with it and produces water, salt and CO2.
I like reusing mountain dew bottles - easy to see which is MY BOTTLE.
they also look nicely 'radioactive' when you shine a blue LED on them :)
Clive, something else you could try out:
Take some jam, marmalade, fruit butter, whatever you prefer (I find smoother works better but that's my own tastes) and put a couple spoonfulls into a mug. Then pour boiling water in from your kettle. Stir the mixture up and you've got a nice sweet fruit drink much like storebought juices, except hot (though there's no reason why you couldn't chill it after) and it doesn't take up the same amount of space as a large bottle would.
If you really wanted to control every step you could make jams out of fresh fruit first, then do this later.
It should in theory be cheaper overall if you compared jams to juices on a cost-per-serving basis (admittedly the energy it takes to heat the kettle and tap water add some, bu I don't think it's quite that much.)
Im just adding two AAA batteries and it always work, I tried to add li-ion battery at first but it was making t much fizz and it was like drinking cola that have too much gas + is smell like old beer.
Yeah, sherbe(r)t is made with bicarb, citric acid and sugar.
Citric acid is easily bought from your local chemist.
How do you make your own weight gainer? Grinding up oats and adding milk or water works for me but is there a better weigh?
Just eating normal food is all you need to do. Most of the supplement powders being sold are just created by an industry that is cashing in on peoples desire to be physically bigger. So drink milk and eat burgers.
bigclivedotcom thanks I sure will 😀 I'll stick with my oats too, the gainer stuff tastes awful!
Knuckles the Echidna That pun at the end got me good. Well played.
If your gymming to try and trim up and loose some of the spare tyre (damn i really need to get back into shape -.-) I would cut down how much sugar you add...
Ideally you want to have some energy to keep you going, but not so much that you dont actually burn off what your going to the gym to get rid of in the first place...
Its best to use the sugar or energy drink when your trying to push your muscles to a new level and your pushing that bit harder or testing yourself for something...
I find the sugar in squash is more than enough sugar to use.
I used to do 1 hour spin classes and I would have some thin squash and a good pinch of salt in a litre bottle... Did the job :D
Alternatively, if you're low on time, you can keep shaking bottle until sugar dissolves. Tested this because I knew this trick well before this vid was up (tho I'm putting also some food coloring so it's pleasant to look at) and it takes only few minutes of shaking for sugar to dissolve completely.
I would suggest adding some sort of potassium salt as well, you can buy potassium chloride as a salt substitute for people with high blood pressure. But adding that can help with muscle cramps and such.
The mix of salt and sugar is also something thats used in dioralyte etc. because some of the pores in your intestine will only respond when both of them are there together. Then once the salt and sugar are absorbed into your body it makes it much easier for the water to be absorbed since it will always try to follow the salts and sugars.
how closely does Willie from the Simpsons represents you?
Too closely.
Probably someone has brought this up but glucose rather than sucrose makes a better energy drink. Sucrose (table sugar) is half fructose, and the liver converts that into triglycerides (a bit of a burden on the liver).
just goes to show what a rip off these are, pennies worth of ingredients and a whole load of branding.
And a "signature fragrance" consumerist.com/2011/07/29/oj-flavor-packs/
Yes. Even orange juice.
yea but thats easy to know because they cook it to store it for so long so it doesnt spoil ofc that fucks flava
Wait until you find out some companies sell bottled _water_...
RFC3514 bottled water can be pretty cheap. at the kroger by my house, you can get 32 16 oz bottles for like 3.75
Borto - By the same logic, energy drinks are actually useful in countries that don't treat their fresh water, salt, sugar or citric acid properly.
The OP's point wasn't whether it was _useful_ or not, it was about what you're actually paying for.
BTW, most of the profits for bottled water "manufacturers" come from first world countries, where tap water is actually subject to _stricter_ regulations than bottled water. Water that would fail legal tests for municipal distribution can still be legally sold (for more than 1000x the price) in bottles.
My suggestion is using some ascorbic acid or Vitamin C powder in with the baking soda which will help you get even healthier with perhaps a little bit of lime juice just for taste
0:27 The bottle is handicapped
Krisztián Szirtes Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
It's got what plants crave!
A silly question, but thoughts on caffeine? Many of the energy drinks basically differentiate themselves from soda by adding quite a bit, though of course it'd be less for a hypothetical home preparation.
Oh yes, fully understood on that. If I were to make a preparation like that I'd definitely use a proper scale, was more thinking on how well it'd dissolve, what would be appropriate for that size of bottle etc.
Caffeine is a great performance enhancer, but I wouldn't add it to a sports drink. Firstly it is very bitter and secondly it takes time for it to get absorbed by the body and start taking effect. It takes about 30mins from consumption to start working then lasts for hours. Better to just drink a coffee or take a caffeine pill 30mins before the exercise.
Stimulants are not usually considered a beneficial component of an exercise regime.
If you want caffeine, use brewed tea instead of water. But as caffeine is a mild diuretic, it is a poor choice to add to a sports rehydration drink.
Markle2k has a good point about it being a diuretic - but I will add that you can get it pre-mixed with other semi-neutral powders like glucose aiding the dosing.
tasty... mmmm
why just use one type of salt, why not KCl, NaCl, and other useful salts such as Iodized salt?
Wouldn't unrefined sugar and sea salt work much better?
There is a lot of discussion that table salt is pretty much useless as its missing some of the minerals your body needs to process the sodium.
Just make Apfelschorle (sometimes called Spritzer, in Australia called Chrissy) it just apple-juice mixed with carbonated water. You can use tap water but it is the same, an all natural sports drink.
Sounds like what my plants crave.
Bigclive a gym bunny!? Mind blown!
Gym bear.
mmm bear
dan H "one day a week" bear
it explains his lack of mood swings 🤔
I live in California and I don't have access to water. Are there acceptable substitutes out there?
Yes. You can substitute beer or cider for the water.
Isn't beer kind of redundant? I use beer as my recovery drink after exercise. Works great!
I ended up getting some gose. It's beer that's already salty and tangy
Tequila?
A smidge of calcium lactate for something approaching a Pocari Sweat. woooot!
I read it as electrolytics, but I was still not disappointed.
Where do you get the citric acid from? Also, if I put that raw acid on my tongue, would it burn or just taste nice?
You can buy it an eBay.
citric acid comes as a powder, no , you dont want it on your tongue neat, its way strong an acid
If you have ever bought a bag of sour skittles and ate them all you'll find a white powder in the bottom of the bag... That is Pure Citric Acid if you take that powder and put it on your tough (About a Grams Worth) you'll find that it is the epitome of sour (Literally...)
Small amounts will just taste extremely bitter/sour, eat enough of it for extended periods of time though and your mouth will start to bleed... And that is not an exaggeration, found that out after eating about 30 Warhead Popsicles a day for several days in a row...
So yes you can put it on your tongue, no it really does not taste good straight up (Much like a strong Hot Sauce By Itself...) And it will burn slightly but eat enough without giving your mouth time to heal it can actually cause chemical burns that may rupture and bleed...
You can get mega sour sweets in the Uk that are coated with granules of citric acid. Most people have to spit the candy out. They do cause tongue burns if you eat too many.
I think you've just made Pocari Sweat. Despite the name, it tastes great - just like slightly salty lemonade.
This is what I use (without NaHCO3) for my wine. Sugar and some weak acid.
Where are you getting this citric acid from? Can't say I've ever noticed it in shops...
That Guy
Online?
山本ヨーヨー Let's hope he hasn't been buying cheap off ebay ;)
Any decent grocer will carry it.
In Wilkinsons go to the laundry section and you get a 250g box for £1.50. You only get 100g for a quid in the homebrew section. And it's the same stuff.
You can buy food-grade citric acid, in powder form on eBay, pretty cheaply - I needed some, to make a humidifier filter cleaning solution, a few years ago, since I couldn't get any of Panasonic's cleaning solution.
Next add a zinc and a copper plate, a joule thief circuit and some LEDs. Stick them in the bottle and you have a self powered glowing drink. Only goes out when you finish the bottle.
Can you get powdered caffeine, to make it like red bull ?
Sure.
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BULK-POWDERS-200-mg-Caffeine-Tablets-Pack-of-100-/191963806953
Have fun ODing!
You can buy pure powder caffeine on eBay but be VERY careful. You really need to weight it out with super-precise drug scales as it is extremely toxic in even small quantities. It's not something you just bang in by the spoonful.
it is going to depend on what kind of gym exercise you are doing - but putting glucose in like that may slightly defeat the point. Personally I prefer diluting fruit juice by 50% with a dash of salt as the fructose is slightly less available and it provides all the carbs you might need - but the main thing is it eases hydration (actually water does a pretty good job on ts own but I don't like the taste :)) ) - I think it is good to make the body work for that bit of carb if I can and glucose is a bit to readily available - fructose one more step. Otherwise informative, and at least there is no sweetener or dextrose !
Does that qualify as an energy drink?
In Germany an energy drink is something like Red Bull, Monster, Rockstar or whatever.
Basically a sweet drink with caffeine and sometimes guarana and taurin.
The stuff you've shown we call isotonic drink.
The definitions might be be different in other countries.
Yes sports drinks is another name for those, i think thats how most people call it here. I think isotonic drinks is not really common, i just couldn't find the right word :)
hehe Guarana is just caffeine amazon tribes drink it like coffe
Yes its a plant high in caffeine. But the caffeine in Guarana takes longer to kick in, so they use it to prolong the caffeine effect.
you keep saying this word iv never herd before "gym" are you by any chance swearing at me :D
They do exist! I went to a gym once, but I was kinda let down because they didn't have a single Pokémon badge to give away :(
Same here... I initially thought that Jim was just a good friend of Clive's.
that's just his accent. he's saying "shim" like when you're adjusting the fit of a joint. thirsty work, that.
Bicarbonate soda with citric acid is what they use to give sherbet it's flavor and zing.
You should probably use "low sodium" salt instead of normal salt, it contains useful amounts of potassium.
Clive, what do you think about the negatives of reusing plastic bottles? Chemicals like BPA leaching into whatever you fill them with.
Much less will leach into the contents in two days of refrigerated storage than will leach over the huge time between a factory packaging a drink and you finally drinking it.
Sandyford Autos I agree. I don't want my water through Bisphenol A pipes to be in any other vessel than my leaded crystal glass. I'd return any plastic bottles alongside the free BPA coated thermal receipt straight to the shop.
It's not that big an issue.
The Dihydrogen Monoxide is more dangerous to your health than any BPA that might leach into the water
I don't understand your logic. How would reusing a bottle be any different than the first use? If at all, reusing would be safer, because part of the BPA already has leached out and the longer you use it the less can leach out.
Anyway the BPA thing is, again, mostly a media scare and unless you get some cheap china bottle a non issue.
+bigclivedotcom
PET bottles (the ones you by drinks in) don't contain any BPA. It's the reusable PC ones that had an issue. Although "issue" might be an overstatement. The negative effects are far from conclusive, especially in those concentrations you typically got from bottles. The leaching is also very slow at room temperature and below. To get higher concentrations you'd need to heat the plastic up (e. g. use it in the microwave).
