Thought my AC Compressor was going bye bye...then I saw this video, and I did the oil cap thing. BINGO!! Replacing the Oil trap today.. Thanks for this!!!
Thank you so much! Had exactly the same issue. Quick Google search yielded your video. Purchased a replacement part, not the 0EM, which cost me $40. Took me 10 minutes to replace it. You saved me probably around $400. God bless you.
Thanks for the video. I just fixed my 18 xc90 which had exactly the same problem as in the video, loud whistle noise with the too lean P0171 code. I bought a genuine Volvo oil trap. The replacement took me about 30 minutes following this video. It works like a charm and the noise is gone! I tried to reset the check engine light but it was not successful at that time. After driving around with several start/stop cycles the next day, the check engine light became off by itself. I think my car is fixed now so I avoided a trip to Volvo services and saved lots of money. Thank you very much!
Thank you for this video! Like everyone below- you saved me a bunch of cash. Wish there was a tip function on there because all the time you spent filming and uploading should be worth more than just a "thumbs up". By your kind actions you saved so many people their hard earned cash. so THANK YOU!
Thanks for this! I was hoping to hear the sound the oil fill hole makes with the oil cap off AFTER the PCV box is fixed. My xc90 isn't squealing, but I get the lean code and the pulsating whoosh sounds when I take the oil fill cap off. What is normal crank case vacuum pressure?
Try resetting fuel trim adaptions, seem to have worked for me, check engine light would come on every time after replacing the part until I reset. We'll see if it comes back or not..also check your oil cap rubber seal

Great video. I have the same code, with a terrible exhaust stench. I am betting on a bad O2 sensor but will do a vacuum rule out test first. Any hints on how to get to the O2 sensor? My guess is that I need to drop the plastic skid plate to access the cat.

HELP, please! Would this oil trap issue be indicative of any additional issues that would cause our driver's side exhaust to smoke? I followed your advice and replaced the oil trap and the screeching sound went away, but accompanying this issue was white smoke coming from the driver's side exhaust (I am unsure if there was any smoke prior to discovering the oil trap issue but I think I would have noticed it) and after I replaced the oil trap the smoking still persists. This video was so helpful though, thank you. Our 2016 is barely outside of its warranty and we would have gotten a large bill I'm sure had I not replaced this myself. Hoping that the smoke is somehow residual and will subside.
If oil was pushed into the exhaust from the old trap, then it will take a little bit to burn away. I would suggest verifying proper oil level, and going for a 10 minute ride on the freeway
@@69nitronova Thanks for the quick response! I had the trap replaced within five miles of hearing the sound for the first time so I was thinking it could be something like that.

No flashing codes or red hood just the check engine light is on. By the way FCP Euro is very helpful and easy to work with for a newbie owner of volvo. Thank you for this video.
Is there a torque spec for the bolts? I've watch a few videos and everyone just says " tighten the bolts". Want to make sure since I'm about to take this on and save a few hundred $. Ps. currently our local Volvo dealership charges just under $400 to replace this.
I'm certain there is. I simply used a 1/4" drive ratchet and snugged the bolts. There is a steel sleeve in the hole of the oil trap where each bolt goes, you'll feel the gasket compress then you'll feel the sleeve hit the engine and stop tightening. I would guess around 70 inch pounds of torque
