HI Scott can you please tell me after playing tenor alto an baritone saxophones 17 months your thoughts on me picking up a valve trombone. thank you😊🙏🤝
I find it more useful to think what key I’m in. So, G mixo is key of Cmaj, G Dorian is F, G aolean is Bb, etc. This also leads to identifying the harmonic structure of a tune. So, if I see C-7, it’ll want a Dorian, Aolean or Phrygian scale depending on what key that part of the tune is in (Bb, Eb or Ab).
Try not to crutch on scale equivalents, it’ll make seeing the chords more difficult understand. The point is that it’s a g chord not a c scale when heard. It’s best to learn the patterns and scales from each note that makes it’s chord or scale. Knowing on the scale equivalent is good but it’s better to understand how to play each type of chord depending on which chord is written or played. I did that for years equivocating the major scales, but really the major scale should be a point of reference for how to write or play the scale or chord written or played. It’s best to sit down and practice technique of every arpeggio and memorize the type of chord you’re playing based on pattern. Then knowing the pattern it’s just pattern xyz for major minor etc for every all notes on your horn that you can fit into your practice.
uah... as usual really cool n great 💥🎷💥 i m coming from guitar and i learned sax all by my self starting in 1990... no internet at all! only few text book and some friends... and i do not read music notes 😜😂🤪 so i make a mess with sax, a tenor, i learned all the scales in concert key 😂😢 and now it is very hard, every time, to translate the spelling of the scales i listen in all videos on internet... and, more, i m italian 😋... for me the ugly scales to practice on tenor/soprano are FA# , DO# (concert key) i like DO, RE, SOL (concert key) and, naturally, SIb...🎷😀
Did they?? I just looked at their website and didn't see anything. I've been trying to get that harness made for a long time. I got pretty close with Neotech. It blows my mind, because it is the easiest and most comfortable harness I've ever played.
The way I see it is on the cycle of fourths, moving one step to the right so G mixo wouldn't have any alterations ( just like C major), G Dorian would have a Bb ( F major), G Natural would have a Bb and an Eb (Bb major) and G Harmonic is just like the Natural but finishing 1/2 step below the root instead of 1 step. I having checked if it works on any scale, but it should...
For me it's just easier to know what scale degrees are lowered for each type scale. It simplifies things because it is the same for every scale. Example - for dorian minor no matter what key you are in or where you are on the circle of 5ths every dorian scale has a lowered 3rd and 7th.
I’m still early in the process of picking the horn back up after … way too long. Early lessons never went very far (high school jazz band). To be honest? I never played all keys before now! Regardless my favorite key is D. Runs up and down the alto from low to high are super easy. My least favorite? C#. Drives me nuts.
Yeah, that C# makes the D scale an easy one to play fast! If you're just starting back up, you should check out my Sax School! You will see some very fast improvement and be playing some cool stuff within a week or two. www.scottpaddocksaxschool.com
The Pentatonic Scale is a great scale to learn, although I would suggest learning your major scales first. It will make understanding it a whole lot easier.
Hey Phuong, I'm not sure why you'd be getting that message, but you can reach me through: www.scottpaddocksaxschool.com or www.scottpaddock.com or any of my social media pages. I don't want to put my email address on UA-cam as I'm sure it will lead to a lot of spam.
Beautiful information
Hello Scott, I am a trumpet player but I learn a lot of convenient theories from you! Thank you so much for the work you do!!!
🎺🎺 👍
Have learnt somethin' today thanks Scott
And my favorite key is any key except G flat
I like F#, but if I think of it as Gb my mind might explode 🤯 haha
Marvelous

Thanks Scott for great work. My best key is F. E-flat less favorite😂
Alllllllll of the pinky keys for Eb makes it not that much fun.
Great content as always Scott! Thanks. I know it’s off topic but did you notice Vandoren stole your idea for your neck strap?

Only been learning 6months but my favourite key is E
Que boquilla usas?
I read somewhere to learn pentatonic scales. What’s better to learn
The Pentatonic Scale is a great scale to learn, although I would suggest learning your major scales first. It will make understanding it a whole lot easier.
For me, My favorite key depends on the song I'm playing. However, I am fond of the G 😂
I don't have a least favorite 🙃
G for sax players feels like home 😁😁😁😁 Most teachers do examples in G because it puts both alto & tenor players in a good key.
Is the Meldodic Minor Scale the same as the Natural Minor Scale?
Melodic Minor has a b3 going up, and is Natural Minor going down. It's one of the few scales that is different going up than going down.
Hi. I trying to send you an email about saxophone lesson but somehow it’s said that the email is not valid!

@@ScottPaddock I have tried and it still saying that the email is not valid,
My favourite key is key leaves, really useful to avoid sticky pads. My least favourite key is Vinz Clortho, the keymaster.
I avoid sticky pads by cleaning the sax 👍🤣🤣
I'm a fan of Key Leaves also (I'm actually one of their artists). I had to look up Vinz - Who you gonna call? 😂🤣
Eb is not good for me… love D
I don’t like a natural minor because everyone just jams in a minor when at social gatherings.
F# Mayor, the one I like the most...
I like F# minor A LOT, I don't dislike F# major, but it would be in the middle of the list for me.
