    Rudy Vallee & His Connecticut Yankees
    Rudy Vallée (July 28, 1901 -- July 3, 1986) was an American singer, actor, bandleader, and entertainer.
    The Vagabond Lover is a 1929 American Pre-Code black-and-white, comedy-drama musical film about a small-town boy who finds fame and romance when he joins a dance band. The film was directed by Marshall Neilan, and is based on the novel of the same name, written by James Ashmore Creelman, who also wrote the screenplay. It was Rudy Vallee's first feature film, and also starred Sally Blane, Marie Dressler, and Charles Sellon.
    The film premièred in New York City on November 26, 1929, and was released wide on December 1. A DVD version was released on March 29, 2005.
    The Vagabond Lover is an early example of a vehicle created for a popular music star, in a style echoed by later films such as Jailhouse Rock with Elvis Presley and A Hard Day's Night with The Beatles.
    "I'm Just a Vagabond Lover"
    Written by Rudy Vallee and Leon Zimmerman
    Lyrics:
    Just a vagabond lover with a sweet seranade,
    just a vagabond lover to a Romany maid.
    Beneath your window, where moonbeams lie,
    My heart is bleeding, love me tonight!
    Though I'm only a rover and our ways lie apart,
    We are meant for each other, you have stolenmy heart!
    But the open road will call when the dawn begins to shine;
    just a vagabond lover, for tonight you are mine!
    My heart to you I'm bringing,
    The words I'm singing come from my heart,
    So let my arms enfold you,
    For with the dawn we two must part!
    Though I'm only a rover and our ways lie apart,
    We are meant for each other, you have stolenmy heart!
    But the open road will call when the dawn begins to shine;
    just a vagabond lover, for tonight you are mine!

    We inherited the 78rpm record of this from our grandparents (born 1887 and 1894) and played it on a gramophone. All long gone now....

    My grandmother had this in her 78 rpm collection. She and my grandfather went and seen him when they were dating. Never had a chance to meet my grandpa but my grandma was the best. Love and miss her to this day. Her 115 Birthday is coming up soon

    he's the total musician-- his musicality is always fresh an inspiring. He really had great understanding for interpretation .Aagh, i was in love with him at 4 and still crazy about Rudy. So few musicians have such instinctive uncanny gift to be musical, fresh each time. You can listen to many different Vallee recordings;but the most striking thing is they are all different, all fresh, all vibrant as if recorded yesterday. such a smooth, even voice...opera singers drool for such legato.

    "While some girls are quickly forgotten - and gone with the dawn of day - But some you'll remember like lost flowing embers - Haunting your memory and dreams - For, I'm just a Vagabond lover - In search of a Sweetheart it seems - And, I know that someday I'll discover her - The girl of my Vagabond dreams."

    I was introduced to this song as a cut on a Plaza House Greatest Hits collection advertised on TV about 1968 by Rudy Vallee in college garb with megaphone. Chubby Checker also appeared for the 60's portion of the collection. The cut on the album is a slightly different version.

    The Victor mikes were much kinder to Rudy's voice than the mikes used in the film, the Vagabond Lover. The film sound track gives his voice an unattractive nasal sound.

    He did not look quite as dapper in the movie version of "How To Succeed In Business" but he could still sing well:)

    Great post, but the lyrics above don't match what he is singing. There are different versions of the lyrics, but Rudy Vallee is singing his original lyrics here. Give it a listen and you'll see.
