- Brunei may be one of the richest nations in the world, but financial problems have beset even their royal house. The sultan has recently made moves towards some form of partial democracy. However, it is up to him whether or not he introduces it. Why did he make a move to do so, and then let it drop?

I worked in Brunei in 1984 as a Chef Patissier at the Sheraton Hotel. During that time the sultan and his two wifes would visit the hotel several times for a high tea. On their arrival, the head of departments would stand in line to greet the royal family. They never were overbearing and we never felt having to be submissive.
It was a pleasure to work and live in Brunei.
Why you let him give up brunei. Were you hùrt. by him
@@angelescepeda1617 sorry, I don't understand your question.
Must've been a memorable experience. What's it like to work there? No taxes must be awesome. You might be in your 60s by now and retired. Just a guess and an attempt to answer Angeles' question. Another guess, you must be Italian (or of origin).🙂

@@jrodayeoh yes was great. Few tourist, so was able to travel around with local work friends. I was only 23 when I started my first position as a Patissier in charge. No tax, all medical and dentist expences paid.
Free health care and education also no taxes...wonder why the people of Brunei love the Sultan? He treats his people very well.
Does it bother you that "he treats his people very well" by exploiting fossil fuels and contributing to global pollution?
only the western propaganda macHine want this sultan gone by focusing on his family's excesses. ofc all rich people are going to splurge on something. the only thing that matters is the welfare of the people and the bolkiahs have accomplished this with virtually zero debt. i dont understand the insecurity of western hegemony.

I almost wanted to say this was unfair, but then I thought :
They have everything we do in first world countries minus income tax. ( free education and healthcare is more then some 1st world countries have honestly )
They have opportunity, and are well off compared to many, many parts of the world.
It is no more unfair then people in the first world not being born rich !
I mean it is still the governments money untouchable by the people no matter what, and the people still have all the benefits and more of even the pinnacle of 1st world countries !

One of the Sultan that really take care of his subject. Long Live The Sultan Of Brunei and Long Live The Brunei Sultanate
The thing is, Hassanal Bolkiah is one of those rare good men who can actually be trusted with absolute power. He can have full control of the country and you can trust that he won’t put his own interests above that of his people.
Such a structure will always fail when someone not as noble as him is in that position. 95% of people would abuse that power in a heartbeat, so the chances that his successor will abuse the system is very high. The sultan has to abolish the structure of absolute power and find a good alternative before he descends from the throne, because even he knows that his sons cannot fully be trusted

But the trade-off is not having many civil liberties that you’d have in a democracy. First of all, freedom of religion is limited that you must be careful to not let your practice of faith escape places of worship or private places, And women still face discrimination, and be careful not to get caught with a certain amount of drugs, because like Singapore, you will incur the mandatory death penalty.
Why is it that people always attack the western world? What have we done to be so hated ?? I’m sure if Brunei one day needed the Western world for help from invasion, I have no doubt, the Sultan would ask the Western world for help and I’m sure you would gladly accept the help. Stop blaming the western world for the problems in your country.

I grew up in Romania, back then a communist country under a stupid dictator doing a lot of bad to his people , Ceausescu . Then after 1989 Romania went to become a democratic country and also experienced a lot of turmoil in trying to achieve a more prosperous status . Fed up with that 20 years ago I emigrated to Canada where I've lived between my new country also a monarchy and a democratic G7 country and often visits to USA where I spent about 3 years if I add all together . So I've lived through all political and social systems . If Brunei Sultan is a good human ( it sure seems so to me as a far away observer ) and a good organizer and leader of his country and if he offer prosperity to his people let that country alone as it is , a Sultanate and an absolute monarchy , why forcing a regime change ? So that outside forces take advantage of it? Leave it as it is , no one will care more for its subjects than a ruler with his family history verified for 600 years of common history with his countryman . The Western countries should protect and help those rulers against harm forever and treat that history with due respect . Its people and citizens should help their ruler be in power none will want their good more than a local ruler member of their dynasty . Good bless you all .
