One way I learned how to memorize ser in the imperfect is that era is used in English to reference to historical events, activities or common normalities that once or (use to) take place in the past. So if were to say I use to be optimistic, yo era optimista. It would be like saying (in my (era) I use to be optimistic.)
HABER is considered a "regular" verb in the imperfect meaning that it follows the pattern of dropping the ER and adding the endings: había, habías, había, habíamos, habíais, habían

There are maybe 500,000,000 Spanish speakers in the world. I suppose that learning Spanish would allow more people to be connected. There are some countries that have some issues, but so does the US.
