    Believe it or not but this was my fence! The video doesn't show how bad the weather was, but it was bad, like, real bad! Scott told me and my neighbour that it might get a little messy and we were happy for him to proceed. He got the job done quickly and professionally even though there was an arctic weather storm sweeping up the country. The man is a legend. Fact.

      I think this is a good testimony to what we all believe about Scott Brown. I’m not a fan of this style of UA-cam commentary and I’m disappointed the algorithm offered up this toxic garbage.

      If it works for you pal then happy days.but I'd personally recommend some ready mixed cement or "post crete "as it's called here in wales. its cheaper and quick setting excellent for jobs in wet weather and all you need is a watering can,shovel and a level or string line with a weight on the end to get your level and some good old initiative. Honesty is the best policy as a carpenter myself been doing it for 6 years from framing houses to building fences Mother Nature has her effect on everything but so does experience level,quality of lumber and the terrain so in all honesty the concrete at the bottom was an eye sore but just like the fence alittle elbow grease and it’ll clean up the bracing was a good idea for allowing the concrete to encase the post properly but in reality a 3 most important factors in a fence is if it’s level and square if it’s structurally sound and and if it look good and I’ll agree with both of them the lap joints are a nice touch and it makes the fence just alittle more stable but realistically we in the construction business also not only deal with bad weather we also deal with job deadlines and you never know it may have been a job that had to get done before landscaping work started or so on and so forth but keep up the good work you guys and thanks for being critical some people think constructive criticism is bashing someone but it’s not when they can learn and build off of it

    A little tip when pouring concrete around holes like that: cut a piece of sonotube about 8-10” long, put a slit in it and put it around the post at grade as you’re pouring the concrete. You can tape it back together or backfill it. It will contain the top of the concrete and allow, if you want, to have the concrete slightly above grade.

    Id say the holes were full of water when he poured perhaps being that deep hit the water table or just down to the bad weather. Aslong as he fixes the mistake id be fine with it and he probably wasnt that bothered knowing that walking up and down in that kind of condition would turn both sides into a bog! So would need raking over, some new top soil and seeding to make good again regardless of excess water spilling out.

    I do fencing in Canberra Australia, must say here we definitely don’t use timber posts due to rotting, it will always be a steel post in a 600mm deep by 300mm wide concrete filled holes, same method for rails to be bolted to that post and to run the pailings high then be chopped after, but it’s most common to be doing colourbond fences here as it really isn’t much more expensive anymore to get a steel fence that’s already powder coated.

    Yeah I think they made.a bit of a mess but usually they are pretty quality soni think it was maybe just a bad day type deal. The thing I didnt understand was getting a concrete truck for 10 post holes? I do most of mine with bagged concrete personally

    My main issue with this video. Why on earth wouldn’t you either buy a few bags of postfix and throw them in or worst case hire a mixer for the day?! Like others have said. Scott is generally excellent at what he does so one mishap can be forgiven.

  • @jasonmarsh9722

    Judging by your video, I'm assuming that overall you were happy with Scott's work. I'm sure the principles of fence construction in any given environment is the same everywhere, when your Neighbour offers to build a fence then it's also serving your purpose as the dwelling next to or adjacent. Cost is sometimes split between the opposing properties, but in this case, having a qualified chippy living next door, id be surprised if he didn't split the cost of the materials only, let alone do it for free. So, regarding the mess, I don't think the Neighbour would've been phased by it.

    So what was the point of setting the Pickett to heighth just to cut top. Seems like he could skipped that and just kept his half inch on the ground then cut top. Seems like a un needed step.

    I watched a fence crew just eyeball everything. And the only tool I saw used was a chain saw. I told them I wouldn't ever hire them myself but more power to them making the home owner think this is normal. The home owner was a dick so he deserved it. He didn't wanna give us 10 inches out side of the fence to run a gas main. Even though we told him if we do it we will hook up a gas service to his house. He said no. Then after we already put the gas main in changed his mind. My forman told him 6 grand and we can run it. Would have been free yesterday.

    Scott brown isn’t a concrete guy or a fence builder, he’s a carpenter. Sure there’s overlap but I doubt he’d claim to be an expert on the perfect way to pour concrete in the rain. There might be tricks to pouring in the rain that he doesn’t know. What matters is they cleaned everything up and everyone is happy. Besides it looked like that was just water being pushed out of the hole and not concrete going everywhere. As someone who regularly watches his channel, I can say he does things right and if not he corrects it. He’s almost too much of a perfectionist at times. What I find funny is the concrete pouring was the only criticism this guy had. Everything else was either acknowledged as just different strokes or a good way to do things. Yet his thumbnail and conclusion show that he thought it was a bad job. Looks like someone’s using fake drama to get views.

    Bro we build fences year round, even in kneedeep snow, and its 1 in a 100 chance u have dirt soft enough for a drill, so we 100% shovel it. Also sliding gate foundations are typically soso 60×70×90deep. Also never wooden posts and never braces, shit just looks silly unless ur working as a 1man

      They're all the same length. Doing it like that ensures constant height off the ground.

    • @georgemaragos2378
      @georgemaragos2378 3 роки тому

      Hi, i am guessing he is using something like 2.2m planks and that string line is to control the top of the max plank length
      Then once the job is done a decision on where the max of 2 meter zone limit is and they cut the top to stay within council code
      Maybe they went of a certain low spot or high spot but in the 8:30 mark you can see he has continued the level from the old black fence, and the other side finished about ??? 6 inches higher than the rear fence
      So in hindsight he could have used a long string line from the black fence to get the initial top level

    • @SimonHunter1959
      @SimonHunter1959 3 роки тому +1

      Alan, have a look at Scotts video comments, where he answers that exact question "Short answer is to get the bottom straight. They don't make palings to suit our fence height. We bought longer palings, strung it up so the bottom stayed consistent and then cut the top to the desired height"

    • @bikerooter
      @bikerooter 2 роки тому

      Generally just use a 3x2 on the ground and let the pickets follow the contour and trim tops back later if your dont have heritage tops on pickets then you set to string. Scott must have had a nice level pad.
