boxing today is in a sad state nothing that a half dozen george bentons scattered around the globe couldn't fix alas boxing will never be the same without men like him Rest in peace George Benton the world of boxing is forever greatfull hopefuly sweet pea can find a few great boxers and pass on some of your genius
writing a book on the history of philly boxing. i actually interviewed your uncle before he passed, in 2007. even then his stories about joe rose sparkled. i think the thing boxers -- really all boxers today -- need to learn from George is not just his shoulder rolling, but the variety of his defense, the many ways he defends himself, especially his ability to parry shots. he uses his right hand to parry the jab, he uses the right hand to block the left hook -- truly a defensive genius.
My Uncle George is one of the greatst Boxers who ever did it!!!!!!!!! He passed his gift on to some of the Greatest boxers that ever did it!!!!!!!! There will never be another one like him!!!!!! I Luv You Uncle George!!!!!!!!!
whitaker and benton when together worked perfectly together and in my opinion and many others veiws never were beaten a genius and a truely gifted boxer they were unbeatable together
@daTruChosen Thanx so much 4 your kind words!!!!! Uncle George taught great lessons in boxing but he also taught great lessons in life. He was such a beautiful and down 2 earth person. He was willing 2 talk 2 anyone who would listen!! Thanx so much 4 remembering!!! He would be very proud!!!
I really appreciate you taking the time 2 remember Uncle George!! I used 2 be mesmerized by the stories he told, and when I finally got a chance to watch him on film it validated all the stories he told and all the wonderful things people like yourself say about him. I agree with you when you say that the boxers 2day can learn from Uncle George!! He was a helluva boxer, trainer, and a beautiful person. His family misses very much!! What is the name of your book? I would love 2 read it!!
What was some of the stories you remember him saying about his days as a boxer? Mr Benton is one of the few boxers I study as his technique was masterful imo.
george benton was great but he did not invented the shoulder roll neither did ezzard charles, moore or walcott, the shoulder roll is already described in Daniel Mendozas book "The Modern Art of Boxing" written in 1789, you can also see joe gans doing it there is some footage of him fighting in 1907
your uncle george benton was indeed the best trainer easily of my lifetime maybe ever sweet pea was a truely gifted boxer the best I haveever seen but natural talent takes you only so far the fight plans benton came up with were truelygenious whitaker rarely came out and fought the same twice in a row a different plan for every fight you almost never see that smothering the opponent with punches one fight forehead to forehead the next then skipping around the ring planting and countering
Johnny Hutchinson pioneered the Philly shell, he was also fro Philly, Benton learned it from his trainer Joe Rose who was good friends with Johnny Hutchinson
He didn't invent the shoulder roll, it was being used as many as 30 years prior to his career by the likes of Kid Chocolate among others. Regardless, Benton was a technician par excellence.

JC Denton Just a coincidence I believe
Wow he inspired me to be great
old school, james toney used a lot of his techniques

That was a dive, fake He took harder punches in that fight, not hard to tell
Johnny did not have a good jaw. Every time he tried to jump up to the elite status he got KO'd
It did not look like clean shots to me either. Both looked like they were caught on the gloves
