writing a book on the history of philly boxing. i actually interviewed your uncle before he passed, in 2007. even then his stories about joe rose sparkled. i think the thing boxers -- really all boxers today -- need to learn from George is not just his shoulder rolling, but the variety of his defense, the many ways he defends himself, especially his ability to parry shots. he uses his right hand to parry the jab, he uses the right hand to block the left hook -- truly a defensive genius.

I study your uncles technique and fight tactics. He's a legend to me and one of my favorite fighters to watch even though he was way before my time.

I really appreciate you taking the time 2 remember Uncle George!! I used 2 be mesmerized by the stories he told, and when I finally got a chance to watch him on film it validated all the stories he told and all the wonderful things people like yourself say about him. I agree with you when you say that the boxers 2day can learn from Uncle George!! He was a helluva boxer, trainer, and a beautiful person. His family misses very much!! What is the name of your book? I would love 2 read it!!

What was some of the stories you remember him saying about his days as a boxer? Mr Benton is one of the few boxers I study as his technique was masterful imo.

george benton was great but he did not invented the shoulder roll neither did ezzard charles, moore or walcott, the shoulder roll is already described in Daniel Mendozas book "The Modern Art of Boxing" written in 1789, you can also see joe gans doing it there is some footage of him fighting in 1907

your uncle george benton was indeed the best trainer easily of my lifetime maybe ever sweet pea was a truely gifted boxer the best I haveever seen but natural talent takes you only so far the fight plans benton came up with were truelygenious whitaker rarely came out and fought the same twice in a row a different plan for every fight you almost never see that smothering the opponent with punches one fight forehead to forehead the next then skipping around the ring planting and countering

He didn't invent the shoulder roll, it was being used as many as 30 years prior to his career by the likes of Kid Chocolate among others. Regardless, Benton was a technician par excellence.

Johnny did not have a good jaw. Every time he tried to jump up to the elite status he got KO'd

It did not look like clean shots to me either. Both looked like they were caught on the gloves
