People are amazed that George was only 25, but Billy Preston was only 22 in Jan, '69. He had appeared with Nat King Cole on his TV show when he was 11. The Beatles were in Hamburg '60-'62 so they're remembering Billy from when he was between 13-15 years old.
Wow ! I didn’t realize that Billy was that young when he played in Hamburg. I’m really surprised that he was allowed to play in those clubs at such a young age. Wasn’t George deported from Germany because he was underage (17 years old) at one point? I wonder if Billy got away with lying about his age?
Yes! Billy was a little 15 year old when they met him in Hamburg! An organ genius. This explains why Paul didn't recognize him at first when he walked in HAHA.
I'm not one to blow smoke but this might be my favorite music reaction I have seen. As someone that has seen the dreary, dull and disjointed original, I was suprised how honest, funny, and touching the Peter jackson documentary was. The fact that you take the time to understand the people and events that make the film special really says alot about the two of you and the work you put into your videos. Really congratulations on this effort. It's a great piece of work.
I was 9 in early 1980, when I lost my father to a heart defect. That night, a new song was released by an artist called John Lennon, and the song was "Just like starting over." That summer I took all my allowance money and bought every Beatles album I could, which was weird for a 10 year old. Later that year, when we lost John, I went through the whole process over again.
It's history. In living color. It was beautiful. My brother and I walked two miles to the local theater to see 'Let It Be' when it was originally released. To see this documentary was a completion. Many question were answered. So many outstanding moments.
When I finished watching (and I also was dreading the end when the third episode began) I could only think that we have 10 million hours of video recordings from the life of such dull and useless people in this “reality shows era” and we have only 30 days of the work and real life of The Beatles. I could watch a “Keeping up with The Beatles” show for 100 seasons. Amazing inside view of four unique geniuses. Also, loved your reaction video! Great job!
I think the reason, & this is obvious, that the reason George H. turned John down on having both Lennon & Yoko appear at the concert for the gig for Bangla Desh is that the fans, at that time, was anti-Yoko, still convinced that she broke up the Beatles. She would have been booed off the stage. Those ill feelings were still fresh.
I think something that was overlooked is 2 things: 2) John & Paul's voices. On the rooftop, at the end of a song(can't recall which song), John starts singing, "A pretty Girl is Like a Melody," in a crooner's voice reminiscent of Bing Crosby/Dean Martin w/no nasal tone which I think he might have used strictly for R&Roll. The other is in the studio when Paul, stogie in hand, staged a drunken Scottish voice of an older man stumbling out of a pub. The third id is Harrison's musicality as a guitarist. From "I Have a Feeling" playing that note he used vibratto & descending back to the A chord, his lead on "I Dig A Pony," his great r&b lead in "The One After 909," screaming blues licks in B reaching down to the backside of B chord to give it a wider palate from high pitch to that booming sound off the bar chord at the 4th fret, & finally his musical presence on, "Don't Let Me Down."
Great commentary guys! What a blessing that these films were made and that Peter Jackson found them. I think he did a masterful job putting this series together. I loved the calendar timeline aspect. Yes, it does seem a little long at times and yet... I would not trim out a single minute of it. (Well... maybe Yoko's screeching). Just to see the way they interacted, how in sync they were, the incredible musicianship. And how quickly and seemingly effortlessly they could go from a few chords and rudimentary lyrics to the final and polished product. Truly amazing. One thing I found notable was how the ever-present Ringo always immediately knew exactly what each song called for. Even as songs were still in early developmental stages, he already had the perfect drum line in place. The Get Back sessions are the jewel on top of the storied and legendary run.
So well said Don. So surreal to see and I will watch it again. Supposedly Jackson has a 17-18 hour Director's cut that he will release at some point. I am IN!
I especially love the part at the end with the English 'Bobbies' trying to stop the concert and everyone doing their best to stall them - also all the vox pops from the passers by giving their opinions whether they liked the music.
I think the funniest thing about Yoko's screeching was the one scene where the camera pans to Heather McCartney's face. She looks like she just sucked on a lemon. Something about the honestly of children... Also, as much as Yoko has taken so much hate from Beatle fans, she released videos and interviews from the Lennon estate for the Anthology series, as well as gave her permission for this to be aired. Mrs. Harrison as well.as for the Get Back Documentary.
I won’t keep posting relentlessly, but there’s so much, that I could talk about it forever - I also love so many George moments like when they’re working out some possible (horrible) backup harmonies for “Don’t Let Me Down,” Paul is directing it and John is letting it happen. George drawls, “I think it’s awful, actually.” And that’s the end of it, thank god. Later, the director blathers on about doing the show on a cruise ship. George responds, “The idea of the boat is completely insane.” THANK YOU George, always there and straight to the point. That scene highlights to me how at this juncture at Twickenham Paul feels the need, with cameras filming and the clock ticking on his project, to move things along, and John just allowing it to happen and sitting back, while George being George and cutting to the chase in his droll manner.
Congratulations on your enthusiastic and detailed reaction! The Beatles' talent and charisma are not of this planet and although throughout the film George seems disinterested and sulky, undermining the band's unity, it all resolves in the extraordinary rooftop concert. Get Back's almost eight-hour runtime only proves an old suspicion: the more Beatles, the better!
George was dealing with a lot (consistent sidelining of his songs, bossiness from Paul, mocking from John, Patti leaving him, etc.) at the time and the emotional whiplash of jamming with Bob Dylan and the Band (which treated him as an equal) to be treated like a nuisance by the biggest band on the planet. George’s suggestion to move to Apple Studios, let the band borrow his eight-track recording machine from home, and add Billy Preston to the lineup. I find it deeply uncharitable to call George a grump when he has to deal with years of being treated like a “bloody kid”, but made the decisions that that salvage the project, helped Ringo with writing “Octopus’s Garden”, helped contribute great guitar work for Kohn and Paul’s songs, and brought more songs to the table than John.* * Admittedly, John was dealing with a lot of the time: the drug arrest that contributed to his later problems for a United States citizenship, the trauma of having a miscarriage, his divorce from Cynthia, his heroin addiction, etc.) that contributed to his writer’s block.
By the way, George had already done two solo albums (“Wonderwall Music” and “Electronic Sound”) so his wanting to do other solo stuff at that point was nothing new. The part of the doc that touched me the most was when Paul is just sitting there looking rather sad after George left and John was not around and he says “And then there were two”, not realizing how prophetic those words would become years later. That made me shed a tear, I can tell you.
Ya with George neither of those albums are "proper" albums, no lyrics to speak of so yes he ventured out but he had not recorded any of his songs he had written outside of The Beatles so it was still a huge concept. I agree so much on the Paul moment. He was the one holding on to it when the others were ready to let it go, so sad. Thanks!
No, Electronic Sound came out later in 1969 and is all Moog and synth soundscapes, Get Back was recorded in Jan 1969 before that album was even a thought. And Wonderwall was a soundtrack and lot of made up jams and short instrumentals. In Get Back, George is talking about the backlog of more meditative, slower songs he's composed from the heart that he feels aren't quite right for a Beatles album but that he'd love to record solo. Fortunately they all ended up on All Things Must Pass! Most with Ringo and Eric Clapton playing, and a few with Billy Preston in the mix.
This from one of your "casual fans" , but that was 60 yrs ago. thanks and two more favorites: 26) Interaction with 7 year old Heather Shee(? later McCartny) brought out a lot about the adults ,not to speak of joining Ringo as percusionist 27) The fact that in the third part a majority of the adults,most of the time, were smiling.
there are so many bits in this documentary and now that you've enlightened me to a potential 18 hour director's cut i can't wait. but in Episode 2, John, George, and Ringo play “I Lost My Little Girl” - the first song Paul wrote, at 14, about his mother dying. (“Fairly obvious,” he admitted later.) A heavy moment, but a discreet one - nobody else in the room could have any idea what this song was, or what it meant. As always, they communicate in “Beatle code,” as John called it - a private language only they share. I remember years ago reading endless dialogue between the four and thinking, "they speak their own coded language" it's incredible. also Lennon's wit and humour pour through these 8 hours. as Bowie said, "And I was impressed as I was with virtually everything he (Lennon) said. He was probably one of the brightest, quickest, witted, earnestly socialist men I’ve ever met in my life. Socialist in true definition, not in a fabricated political sense. But a real humanist and a really spiteful sense of humour, which of course being English I adored. I just thought we’d be buddies forever and get on better and better and all that. So I know the Beatle that I always liked (laughs), everybody had their favourite Beatle.”
So many great moments and revelations in this Doco. Any fan would want footage behind the scenes to this level. The Beatles are such pop culture icons (Rooftop performance edit was🔥), but this showed the human factor/real emotions behind the machine, especially in that 1969-1970 period. You really do fall more in love with the guys after viewing! Thankful to fellow NZ'er Sir Peter Jackson and Paul/Ringo/Yoko/Olivia for letting this be made/edited and released. Fab breakdown, guys! One of The Beatles reviews is how I found the channel back in mid-2019 (either this album or Abbey Road's review), and so grateful I did find it. I'm also glad to see the Podcast is returning (something to put on when chilling at home or during my lunch breaks lol). Love and appreciate you guys so much 😎💜
It really doesn't matter if some people think it was too long. This was Peter Jacksons baby and he is as obsessed of a Beatles fan as most of the viewers. He convinced everyone that cutting any more out would not do justice for the history and he really wanted to tell the whole story. With all the work it took to get the old video and audio to that level it deserved to be something to tell a complete story.
Great job guys! I’m not a Disney or Star Wars fan but had to pick up Disney + just for this. You guys saw it very much the same way I did! Couple things I loved: Ringo saying “I love listening to this” when Paul is playing Long and Winding Road on the piano. Glyn John’s shooting straight to John about Allen Klein. Not sure if you saw The History of The Eagles (probably not Sean lol) but Frey & Henley try to make John’s look bad but quite the opposite happens. George coming up with Old Brown Shoe and Paul, Ringo & Billy Preston jamming along. John & Billy Preston starting up I Want You was so cool! Ok every second with Billy Preston. George playing piano (I’ve never seen it)! John & Paul singing Two of Us with teeth clenched. What blew me away the most; I’ve been a Beatlemaniac for almost 50 years & I never knew how many of the songs on the Let it Be album came from the actual rooftop recordings. I got Goosebumps every time it said “actual album recording”. They sound perfect up there!!
I watched this documentary once but you guys make me want to view it again. There were lots of things I missed because I would put it on late at night when I was tired, so thank you for your review.
Excellent video you guys! I absolutely loved to The Beatles: Get Back, it’s one of my favourite shows and Peter Jackson did an amazing job with it! Some of my favourite parts of Get Back were all the jams, John’s humour, The Beatles singing ‘She Came In Through The Bathroom Window’ for the first time and the rooftop concert!!!😃👍☮️❤️
What Get Back didn't mention (I don't think) is that two and a half years before directing the Revolution and Hey Jude promos, Lindsay-Hogg directed the videos for Rain and Paperback Writer, two really innovative promos for mid 1966! He had known them for three years by the time 1969 rolled around which could account for how he often casually nudged them or questioned them or offered random ideas....I think music videos were definitely his strength as a director and editor but he was a little out of his depth trying to helm a long format documentary such as this. I'm so glad Peter Jackson and his team got their hands on all this footage and were given plenty of time to craft it into a linear retelling of this month in the life of the band that is really compelling.
Conversation over lunch (unaware of the mic ) between John and Paul where John admits that he and Paul have wronged George in many ways. And Paul telling John that John was the boss beatle and Lennon saying no.
Shawn and Trey, This is cool. 25 favorites things from the Get Back documentary. I haven't watched this documentary yet. You guys bring up a lot of facrs and insight on this subject. I heard of Ringo's movie The Magic Christian but I never watched that movie yet.That is cool that Paul is the spark and coming up with Get Back. There are some interesting moments involving George Harrison. I agree, Mal Evans was a big help to the Beatles. Billy Preston added a nice touch on the keyboards. George wanted to leave the grop. John nd Paul were so bonded in their frienship and musical partnership. I really like the interesting insight into these facts that you guys bring up in your conversation. We have the original movie on SVD, and my favorite segment of the movie is the rooftop concert, one of the most iconic moments in music history. I hope to see this documentary someday.. You guys are familiar with the Beatles for three years, and you are more knowledgeable than I am, and I have been a Beatles fan since 1964 at age five. Lol Looking forward to more of your Beatles videos.

Nice review guys! The two biggest revelations for me: 1- Not only was Paul not responsible for the breakup, if it wasn't for him they probably would have broken up much sooner. Possibly after Pepper. 2- I understand George's bitterness a lot better now. I really felt for him. John and Paul were really dismissive of his songs. He'd bring in song after song and the reaction was lukewarm at best from Paul, all while pushing John to write more because they didn't have enough songs! And then there was John telling him we're a fucking rock band, we don't do Waltz, after George excitedly played them I Me Mine. He even started to dance a Waltz with Yoko when the other three were practicing the song, lol. Poor George.
And I Me Mine is a great song. The other Beatles should have been jumping up and down with joy because George brought a great song to the table, and been anxious to work on it.
I’ve been a Beatles fan for years and feel lucky we got this. Pretty much the best footage of the Beatles that exists and it was in a vault for 50-years! I thought I’d seen the last new thing from the Beatles years ago.
i want library access to it, to merely view as a reference document....The Library of Congress should try and buy a print of it. i would watch it all in depth, no complaints.
This was a great reaction video. I really enjoyed it. Paul pulling Get Back out of thin air [using his bass as a guitar!] was the very first thing I mentioned to people who had not seen the film and who were asking me about it. During the flowerpot conversation John, as well as pointing out why George was so pissed off, was also expressing his *own* resentment towards Paul - re Paul's arrangements and suggestions for his [John's] own songs. This was after we had earlier seen both George and John looking pretty sullen as Macca tries to direct them *both* in Don't Let Me Down [which was John's song, not Paul's!]. John was noticeably happier and more joyously engaged [especially with Paul] after that conversation. In fact it was only *after* that convo that the true level of synergy between John and Paul became truly apparent. The pointed glances between John and Paul during the discussion about the trip to India. I Interpreted them as almost warning glances not to diss the trip etc in front of George, who had only recently returned back into the band. When I first heard Alan Klein's name mentioned, I instinctively did a DUH DUH DUUURRH impending doom sound effect in my head and I sensed I was not the only person watching who did something similar.
That's cool. I guess all True Beatles fans have been waiting for this for so long. Thank you, Peter Jackson for your help this Historical Musical Document. 3.
I wish there was 8hr footage of Every Beatles album being created. This was Unbelievable. We actually got to see George present “Something” to the band, like “Hey guys I’m working on this thing”
I find it impressive how good they performed on that cold roof with two and a half years after their last concert. The decision was kinda spontaneous and of some songs their takes until the concert weren't that great. They must have felt pressure but they completely succeeded and so the rooftop versions of Dig A Pony, One After 909 and I've Got A Feeling ended up on the album. And to my boy George: Maybe he wasn't on the level of Paul (and John) in 1969 but he came damn close. Writing most of the songs of his album All Things Must Pass, Something, Here Comes The Sun and solid songs on Let It Be, while he also heavily increased his guitar technique (in my view) at that time, just watch him doing the guitar soli on the roof. Brilliant documentary!

Fully agree, seeng Paul literally will Get Back into existence was absolutely mesmerising...he does get a lot of flack but this documentary really showed how conciliatory he was much of the time as well as his musical genius...and all of what, 27 years old here...just wow. Great run down of the show 👍🏻
Only just caught up on this over the last few days and echo much of what you guys discuss. Only thing I'll add (bigging myself up here for a second) is that every time it flashed up with 'this take was used on the album Let it Be' midway through a song I could say, yep, called it in the first 5 seconds. Certain nuances are clearly hardwired into my brain at this point!
Trey, Shawn. When George Harrison was being sued over " My Sweet Lord," Allen Klein owned the original song. So you have Klein sueing George at the same time as being George's manager. The mind boggles. Ringo didn't seem to do much but he knew all the moves. Notice how everyone called him by his first name, Ritchie. When they get out on the roof, these boy's catch fire. Peter Jackson said, " That when he got into the film vault there was all the film and out takes for " Magical Mystery Tour". He wonders if there might be a T.V. show amongst it all. He's asked Paul, Ringo and Apple, he's waiting for someone to get back to him. Nice to see new video's from Ringo and George's family this Christmas. You all have the best of Christmas's and all the best for the New Year. I seem to eat a lot more tea and toast at the moment. Cheers, Chris Perry.

Almost made it thru alll the comments and wow I gotta agree this is a super review! If I understand you both - father, son combo so cool! - were just casual fans until 3 or so years ago!? This film captivated me like I wasn't ready for - 61m. My parents bought many Beatle albums starting with Pepper I think. I was brought to tears many times. At some point at the end of the ep1 I found my guitar in my hands where it remained, and excepting flights of fancy and some magical thinking, the feeling like I was there jamming with them was a rare pleasure. That in spite of their brilliance - or because of it, they could include everybody in their stupendous musical gift. The sense of mere boys conquering the world is strong, the lesson that for them there is no further prize as they grope through this project. For me it's more poignant now after so much time. In our age of mis/disinformation, how the breakup narrative was so cockeyed. In an age militarized police the innocent bobby is doubly touching.
It was great reading your memories, really appreciate you sharing Dave! Yes up until 3 years ago neither of us had ever heard a Beatles album, songs yes but never an album. We have the entire discography up with album reviews of each and then we went back recently and ranked the individual songs on each albums as well as 9 vids on the Anthology and several other things.
Thoroughly enjoyed Get Back, also thoroughly enjoyed this video guys! I'm jealous you have seen McCartney live. I hope to see him and Ringo when they next perform here in England. Would be cool to say I've at least seen half of the Beatles.

We actually have watched it BUT it was way back before we had even been through half their albums. Need to rewatch now that we have such a different understanding and appreciation for them. Thanks for the reminder!
One minor thing that made me chuckle is John asks about Tucson during a rehearsal, and Paul explains that it's where they make High Chapparal. He neglects to mention it's where Linda was living when they met and what inspired her to become a photographer. I'm pretty sure it's just that he wanted to secretly shoutout his future wife :)
There is two different aspects going on. One is the Beatles breaking up and the other is them falling out. The break up was looming and they all felt it (they should have just took time off to do their own thing for a year which George discussed with John). Paul being the only one not wanting to break up. The falling out was over money and John wanting Allen Klien as there new manager. Paul did not agree. Its interesting though that John wanting Allen to manage the Beatles meant he wasnt looking to break up. John did mention that they were lost without Brien Epstein but John and George could not accept Paul trying to 'manage' the Beatles.
Great observations! I loved the Get Back series. In 1970, I was just getting into The Beatles in a big way & my older brother took me to see Let It Be in the theater. It was very different from the Hard Days Night Beatles I was more into at that time, but I remember really liking the rooftop concert. Anyway, 51 years later, I was struck by how young The Beatles were. Even at the end of their incredible time together, they ranged in age from 25 to 28. This combined with their lack of manager introduced additional stresses into the group. If Epstein had lived or if they had found a good replacement, I wonder how things would have changed. Perhaps a manager would have enlisted a writer or director to help give Magical Mystery Tour more structure as a show, could have prevented to financial fiasco of their Apple Corps business, and would have allowed them to focus on music and other interests rather than getting sucked into business meetings in which none of them had an appropriate background. I thought your list of items was great-the only quibble is I think most musicians would say Ringo is a better drummer than Paul.
It's funny what some people think is a strength! John and George bonded on their first Dentist Appointment together and Paul was the odd man out. Paul didn't like acid for obvious reasons. (he couldn't let go of his ego). But George and John could so they were much more apt to be loose. This made for excellent music if not for great discipline.
a bit late, maybe you should revisit some of paul’s solo work, because there are a lot of wonderful hidden gems and if you like his beatle stuff, you will definitely like most of his solo stuff too thanks for the review, really enjoyed it :)
great reaction and thoughtful commentary, as always. I agree, this was epic to watch. I would be in seventh heaven to watch all 60 hours, no problem for me at all. I always knew the discord was way over exaggerated and I'm glad this version came out to show it. In fact I think they were even more harmonious without the glare of the cameras. I have always leaned Lennon but have always loved them all. Ringo is a genius drummer, and no Paul is not in his league on drums, but Paul is a creative musical genius. As is John, just in a very different way. As Bowie articulated, "I felt such kin to him as much as he would rifle the avant-garde and look for ideas that were so on the outside on the periphery of what was the mainstream and then make them apply in a functional manner to something that was considered populist and make it work.” “He would make the most odd idea and make it work for the masses I thought that was just so admirable. I mean, that was like making art work for the people and not sort of having it as an elitist, you know. The thing there was just so much about in that I admire, he was tremendous”, David Bowie said. I have million and one things to say about this outstanding documentary but you both have highlighted some brilliant parts.

Plus there are some wonderful exchanges that were left our of Peter's for obvious reasons as he was trying to present something new and original. I do believe the reason Lennon is 'quieter' in this documentary is that it was a Macca idea and he, and George, weren't all that into it. He became much more animated and lively when they went to the studio and definitely when Billy arrived. i thought made an enlightening point when he said at one part of the documentary to Paul (words to the effect) "I'm letting you and George have your way" suggesting more input. Anyway it is a joy to be a kind of fly on the wall. I mean we are sooo lucky that the best band ever had a film crew recording so much material. I'll watch this forever. great stuff.
Best reaction video ever and that it was the Beatles took it beyond . . Thank you ! I was at school then and even now like so many I'm still trying to get over the break up . . Your energy and enthusiasm makes up for a lot even all these years really helps . . At the time as a teen . . The only refuge was the Blue Album. Thanks again ! And I agree Billy Preston was the mamas well as the fifth Beatle after George Martin.

I’m was one of those marginal Beatles fans. I knew their significance and liked many of their songs. This gave me a whole new perspective however, and I’m now on a Beatles deep dive. I’ve already learned to play half the Let It Be album and starting on Abbey Road
I’m not saying the documentary isn’t long enough, I’m just saying I’ve watched the entire thing about 8 times and counting. Yes, I may have a Beatles problem.
I enjoyed the fact that as a viewer I have heard these songs a thousand times, while the Beatles on screen have never heard them. Also the cigarette smoking told an interesting story about human emotion.
...love your reaction, Guys... haven't even seen yet Peter's epic cut, but have followed the Beatles and seen the rooftop performance (short version) several times over the years... what I find so amazing is how thin the line was then to actually get it out at all... 1) as you also commented on: Paul and Ringo pushed it, to get out on the roof (which could have failed just a few moments before it happened); and 2) they actually pushed out Abbey Road first (which was recorded shortly after this one), and the Let it be material was just lying around, and no one wanted to pick it up anymore... finally they pushed it into Phil Spector's lap, who did his way of producing it (wall of sound; hollywood-style bombastic chorus work), which appalled Paul and John, but they couldn't stop the release anymore - thankfully, I have to say in retrospective... and now we even have this epic to watch... I would love to see a similar epic about Abbey Road, but alas that won't happen, as I think there is no (or very little) filming material about it...
I found watching you absorbing after you had been absorbed watching get back, You were obviously moved by what you had seen and so watching you describe it was for me like watching someone in shock after exiting from a crashed vehicle. The Beatles in the sixties Hit the World Like a Meteor crashing into earth, And boy did they make an impact .I haven't seen get back yet but I will For sure.
Just a thought, Ringo could have stayed long enough to put down his drum parts the be free to do his film Magic Christian. The others could have remained to fine tune the material. Then again Ringo had to be around for the final show.
Great discussion Guys. I learnt a lot about the things I missed. Liverpudlians are known for having very caustic humour.… ie John Lennon was a classic example, not drug related but I agree, he looks like he’s checked out and the clownish behaviour was a side effect. So many fascinating moments. So proud that a fellow NZer delivered this for the world, overall I found it so uplifting and inspiring!
You know what’s rad that’s not obvious? Paul says he’s going to get his rickenbacker fixed… and if you notice by January 31st, he’s got it stripped down to the wood, psychedelic paint job gone. He’s very ‘Do it Now’.
I want to see it but I don't have Disney. I did hear it will come out on Blu-ray and I hope it does. But I am ambivalent because I know there will also be a lot heartache in it too. Seeing songs I know being created and J&P in sync would be impossible to pass up to see. I have heard others say they had to watch it in pieces because it made them emotional at times. I was 11 when I became aware of Let It Be being played on the radio in 1970. During some rough teen years Hey Jude was my anchor and solace. As single artists John and Paul are the ones I listened to. I think Paul's "Here Today" sums up how bittersweet I expect this to be for me. I loved your video and plan to watch more of them. Like I mentioned in my review, I was amazed of all the musical ideas that especially Paul explored in Get Back that weren’t ultimately used! The band’s embarrassment of riches allowed them to literally cherry-pick ideas, and leave other brilliant ideas behind in order to create their ultimate sound!
The proposed concert on Primrose Hill (instead of the rooftop) feels like a huge missed opportunity to me, it's got one of the best views over London UK there, and would have been rather special I believe.
I've seen the original documentary a number of times (I had it on VHS tape but lost it) and noticed that some parts of it aren't in Get Back. I wonder why.
This was a good recap of the Get Back documentary. I hope there’s no RTTC breakup like The Beatles, ha ha. Can we get a documentary 20 years from now on the making of RTTC.
My two favorite moments. Paul’s misty eyes when he’s lost in thought after George walked out. Ringo too, but Paul is clearly emotional. Later, after George rejoins, the camera has a closeup of George watching the magic happening between Paul and John. What’s he thinking? “I’ll never be in their league.” Or “I’ll never be part of their brotherhood.” Or some of both?
The insane thing about this documentary that I had to keep in the front of my mind while watching it, is that George was 25 at the time. He wouldn't turn 26 until the following month.
38 pounds in 1969 is 540 pounds in today's money, so Mal may 1160 pounds a month by today's standard. That's about $1555. That to say, he wasn't paid a pittance. In 1969, he made a good salary, I think. One site says engineers made 14 pounds a week in the '60s. So he did alright for himself. He was a lovely part of the documentary.
The point to that was he was paid the same thing in 1963 and 1969, some may see that as a bit odd as we did. Also he had a family and was struggling financially. So not looking to break it down in 1960's to today's terms, he was the right hand man for the biggest band in the world and while many others saw their pay with The Beatles skyrocket he did not. A bit odd to say the least.
People are amazed that George was only 25, but Billy Preston was only 22 in Jan, '69. He had appeared with Nat King Cole on his TV show when he was 11. The Beatles were in Hamburg '60-'62 so they're remembering Billy from when he was between 13-15 years old.

Wow ! I didn’t realize that Billy was that young when he played in Hamburg. I’m really surprised that he was allowed to play in those clubs at such a young age. Wasn’t George deported from Germany because he was underage (17 years old) at one point? I wonder if Billy got away with lying about his age?
Yes! Billy was a little 15 year old when they met him in Hamburg! An organ genius. This explains why Paul didn't recognize him at first when he walked in HAHA.
I'm not one to blow smoke but this might be my favorite music reaction I have seen. As someone that has seen the dreary, dull and disjointed original, I was suprised how honest, funny, and touching the Peter jackson documentary was. The fact that you take the time to understand the people and events that make the film special really says alot about the two of you and the work you put into your videos. Really congratulations on this effort. It's a great piece of work.

I was 9 in early 1980, when I lost my father to a heart defect. That night, a new song was released by an artist called John Lennon, and the song was "Just like starting over." That summer I took all my allowance money and bought every Beatles album I could, which was weird for a 10 year old. Later that year, when we lost John, I went through the whole process over again.

When I finished watching (and I also was dreading the end when the third episode began) I could only think that we have 10 million hours of video recordings from the life of such dull and useless people in this “reality shows era” and we have only 30 days of the work and real life of The Beatles. I could watch a “Keeping up with The Beatles” show for 100 seasons. Amazing inside view of four unique geniuses. Also, loved your reaction video! Great job!

I think the reason, & this is obvious, that the reason George H. turned John down on having both Lennon & Yoko
appear at the concert for the gig for Bangla Desh is that the fans, at that time, was anti-Yoko, still convinced that she broke up the Beatles. She would have been booed off the
stage. Those ill feelings were still fresh.
I think something that was overlooked is 2 things:
2) John & Paul's voices. On the rooftop, at the end of a song(can't recall which song), John starts singing, "A pretty Girl is Like a Melody," in a crooner's voice reminiscent of Bing Crosby/Dean Martin w/no nasal tone which I think he might have used strictly for R&Roll. The other is in the studio when Paul, stogie in hand, staged a drunken Scottish voice of an older man
stumbling out of a pub.
The third id is Harrison's musicality as a guitarist. From
"I Have a Feeling" playing that note he used vibratto & descending back to the A chord, his lead on "I Dig A Pony," his great r&b lead in
"The One After 909," screaming
blues licks in B reaching down to the backside of B chord to give it a wider palate from high pitch to that booming sound off the bar chord at the 4th fret, & finally his musical presence on, "Don't Let Me Down."
Great commentary guys! What a blessing that these films were made and that Peter Jackson found them. I think he did a masterful job putting this series together. I loved the calendar timeline aspect. Yes, it does seem a little long at times and yet... I would not trim out a single minute of it. (Well... maybe Yoko's screeching). Just to see the way they interacted, how in sync they were, the incredible musicianship. And how quickly and seemingly effortlessly they could go from a few chords and rudimentary lyrics to the final and polished product. Truly amazing. One thing I found notable was how the ever-present Ringo always immediately knew exactly what each song called for. Even as songs were still in early developmental stages, he already had the perfect drum line in place. The Get Back sessions are the jewel on top of the storied and legendary run.
So well said Don. So surreal to see and I will watch it again. Supposedly Jackson has a 17-18 hour Director's cut that he will release at some point. I am IN!
I especially love the part at the end with the English 'Bobbies' trying to stop the concert and everyone doing their best to stall them - also all the vox pops from the passers by giving their opinions whether they liked the music.
I think the funniest thing about Yoko's screeching was the one scene where the camera pans to Heather McCartney's face. She looks like she just sucked on a lemon. Something about the honestly of children...
Also, as much as Yoko has taken so much hate from Beatle fans, she released videos and interviews from the Lennon estate for the Anthology series, as well as gave her permission for this to be aired. Mrs. Harrison as well.as for the Get Back Documentary.

I won’t keep posting relentlessly, but there’s so much, that I could talk about it forever - I also love so many George moments like when they’re working out some possible (horrible) backup harmonies for “Don’t Let Me Down,” Paul is directing it and John is letting it happen. George drawls, “I think it’s awful, actually.” And that’s the end of it, thank god. Later, the director blathers on about doing the show on a cruise ship. George responds, “The idea of the boat is completely insane.” THANK YOU George, always there and straight to the point. That scene highlights to me how at this juncture at Twickenham Paul feels the need, with cameras filming and the clock ticking on his project, to move things along, and John just allowing it to happen and sitting back, while George being George and cutting to the chase in his droll manner.

Congratulations on your enthusiastic and detailed reaction! The Beatles' talent and charisma are not of this planet and although throughout the film George seems disinterested and sulky, undermining the band's unity, it all resolves in the extraordinary rooftop concert. Get Back's almost eight-hour runtime only proves an old suspicion: the more Beatles, the better!

George was breaking up with his wife: other things on his mind
George was dealing with a lot (consistent sidelining of his songs, bossiness from Paul, mocking from John, Patti leaving him, etc.) at the time and the emotional whiplash of jamming with Bob Dylan and the Band (which treated him as an equal) to be treated like a nuisance by the biggest band on the planet. George’s suggestion to move to Apple Studios, let the band borrow his eight-track recording machine from home, and add Billy Preston to the lineup.
I find it deeply uncharitable to call George a grump when he has to deal with years of being treated like a “bloody kid”, but made the decisions that that salvage the project, helped Ringo with writing “Octopus’s Garden”, helped contribute great guitar work for Kohn and Paul’s songs, and brought more songs to the table than John.*
* Admittedly, John was dealing with a lot of the time: the drug arrest that contributed to his later problems for a United States citizenship, the trauma of having a miscarriage, his divorce from Cynthia, his heroin addiction, etc.) that contributed to his writer’s block.
For me, the great joy was seeing the connection between John and Paul reborn -- the sheer joy they took in working together.

By the way, George had already done two solo albums (“Wonderwall Music” and “Electronic Sound”) so his wanting to do other solo stuff at that point was nothing new.
The part of the doc that touched me the most was when Paul is just sitting there looking rather sad after George left and John was not around and he says “And then there were two”, not realizing how prophetic those words would become years later. That made me shed a tear, I can tell you.
Ya with George neither of those albums are "proper" albums, no lyrics to speak of so yes he ventured out but he had not recorded any of his songs he had written outside of The Beatles so it was still a huge concept. I agree so much on the Paul moment. He was the one holding on to it when the others were ready to let it go, so sad. Thanks!
No, Electronic Sound came out later in 1969 and is all Moog and synth soundscapes, Get Back was recorded in Jan 1969 before that album was even a thought. And Wonderwall was a soundtrack and lot of made up jams and short instrumentals. In Get Back, George is talking about the backlog of more meditative, slower songs he's composed from the heart that he feels aren't quite right for a Beatles album but that he'd love to record solo. Fortunately they all ended up on All Things Must Pass! Most with Ringo and Eric Clapton playing, and a few with Billy Preston in the mix.

there are so many bits in this documentary and now that you've enlightened me to a potential 18 hour director's cut i can't wait. but in Episode 2, John, George, and Ringo play “I Lost My Little Girl” - the first song Paul wrote, at 14, about his mother dying. (“Fairly obvious,” he admitted later.) A heavy moment, but a discreet one - nobody else in the room could have any idea what this song was, or what it meant. As always, they communicate in “Beatle code,” as John called it - a private language only they share. I remember years ago reading endless dialogue between the four and thinking, "they speak their own coded language" it's incredible. also Lennon's wit and humour pour through these 8 hours. as Bowie said, "And I was impressed as I was with virtually everything he (Lennon) said. He was probably one of the brightest, quickest, witted, earnestly socialist men I’ve ever met in my life. Socialist in true definition, not in a fabricated political sense. But a real humanist and a really spiteful sense of humour, which of course being English I adored. I just thought we’d be buddies forever and get on better and better and all that. So I know the Beatle that I always liked (laughs), everybody had their favourite Beatle.”

So many great moments and revelations in this Doco. Any fan would want footage behind the scenes to this level. The Beatles are such pop culture icons (Rooftop performance edit was🔥), but this showed the human factor/real emotions behind the machine, especially in that 1969-1970 period. You really do fall more in love with the guys after viewing! Thankful to fellow NZ'er Sir Peter Jackson and Paul/Ringo/Yoko/Olivia for letting this be made/edited and released. Fab breakdown, guys!

It really doesn't matter if some people think it was too long. This was Peter Jacksons baby and he is as obsessed of a Beatles fan as most of the viewers. He convinced everyone that cutting any more out would not do justice for the history and he really wanted to tell the whole story. With all the work it took to get the old video and audio to that level it deserved to be something to tell a complete story.

What blew me away the most; I’ve been a Beatlemaniac for almost 50 years & I never knew how many of the songs on the Let it Be album came from the actual rooftop recordings. I got Goosebumps every time it said “actual album recording”. They sound perfect up there!!

What Get Back didn't mention (I don't think) is that two and a half years before directing the Revolution and Hey Jude promos, Lindsay-Hogg directed the videos for Rain and Paperback Writer, two really innovative promos for mid 1966! He had known them for three years by the time 1969 rolled around which could account for how he often casually nudged them or questioned them or offered random ideas....I think music videos were definitely his strength as a director and editor but he was a little out of his depth trying to helm a long format documentary such as this. I'm so glad Peter Jackson and his team got their hands on all this footage and were given plenty of time to craft it into a linear retelling of this month in the life of the band that is really compelling.

Shawn and Trey, This is cool. 25 favorites things from the Get Back documentary. I haven't watched this documentary yet. You guys bring up a lot of facrs and insight on this subject. I heard of Ringo's movie The Magic Christian but I never watched that movie yet.That is cool that Paul is the spark and coming up with Get Back. There are some interesting moments involving George Harrison. I agree, Mal Evans was a big help to the Beatles. Billy Preston added a nice touch on the keyboards. George wanted to leave the grop. John nd Paul were so bonded in their frienship and musical partnership. I really like the interesting insight into these facts that you guys bring up in your conversation. We have the original movie on SVD, and my favorite segment of the movie is the rooftop concert, one of the most iconic moments in music history. I hope to see this documentary someday.. You guys are familiar with the Beatles for three years, and you are more knowledgeable than I am, and I have been a Beatles fan since 1964 at age five. Lol Looking forward to more of your Beatles videos.

Nice review guys! The two biggest revelations for me:
1- Not only was Paul not responsible for the breakup, if it wasn't for him they probably would have broken up much sooner. Possibly after Pepper.
2- I understand George's bitterness a lot better now. I really felt for him. John and Paul were really dismissive of his songs. He'd bring in song after song and the reaction was lukewarm at best from Paul, all while pushing John to write more because they didn't have enough songs! And then there was John telling him we're a fucking rock band, we don't do Waltz, after George excitedly played them I Me Mine. He even started to dance a Waltz with Yoko when the other three were practicing the song, lol. Poor George.

I’ve been a Beatles fan for years and feel lucky we got this. Pretty much the best footage of the Beatles that exists and it was in a vault for 50-years! I thought I’d seen the last new thing from the Beatles years ago.
i want library access to it, to merely view as a reference document....The Library of Congress should try and buy a print of it. i would watch it all in depth, no complaints.

Paul pulling Get Back out of thin air [using his bass as a guitar!] was the very first thing I mentioned to people who had not seen the film and who were asking me about it.
During the flowerpot conversation John, as well as pointing out why George was so pissed off, was also expressing his *own* resentment towards Paul - re Paul's arrangements and suggestions for his [John's] own songs. This was after we had earlier seen both George and John looking pretty sullen as Macca tries to direct them *both* in Don't Let Me Down [which was John's song, not Paul's!]. John was noticeably happier and more joyously engaged [especially with Paul] after that conversation. In fact it was only *after* that convo that the true level of synergy between John and Paul became truly apparent.
The pointed glances between John and Paul during the discussion about the trip to India. I Interpreted them as almost warning glances not to diss the trip etc in front of George, who had only recently returned back into the band.
When I first heard Alan Klein's name mentioned, I instinctively did a DUH DUH DUUURRH impending doom sound effect in my head and I sensed I was not the only person watching who did something similar.

I find it impressive how good they performed on that cold roof with two and a half years after their last concert. The decision was kinda spontaneous and of some songs their takes until the concert weren't that great. They must have felt pressure but they completely succeeded and so the rooftop versions of Dig A Pony, One After 909 and I've Got A Feeling ended up on the album. And to my boy George: Maybe he wasn't on the level of Paul (and John) in 1969 but he came damn close. Writing most of the songs of his album All Things Must Pass, Something, Here Comes The Sun and solid songs on Let It Be, while he also heavily increased his guitar technique (in my view) at that time, just watch him doing the guitar soli on the roof. Brilliant documentary!

Fully agree, seeng Paul literally will Get Back into existence was absolutely mesmerising...he does get a lot of flack but this documentary really showed how conciliatory he was much of the time as well as his musical genius...and all of what, 27 years old here...just wow. Only just caught up on this over the last few days and echo much of what you guys discuss. Only thing I'll add (bigging myself up here for a second) is that every time it flashed up with 'this take was used on the album Let it Be' midway through a song I could say, yep, called it in the first 5 seconds. Certain nuances are clearly hardwired into my brain at this point!

Trey, Shawn. When George Harrison was being sued over " My Sweet Lord," Allen Klein owned the original song. So you have Klein sueing George at the same time as being George's manager. The mind boggles. Ringo didn't seem to do much but he knew all the moves. Notice how everyone called him by his first name, Ritchie. When they get out on the roof, these boy's catch fire. Peter Jackson said, " That when he got into the film vault there was all the film and out takes for " Magical Mystery Tour". He wonders if there might be a T.V. show amongst it all. He's asked Paul, Ringo and Apple, he's waiting for someone to get back to him. Nice to see new video's from Ringo and George's family this Christmas. This film captivated me like I wasn't ready for - 61m. My parents bought many Beatle albums starting with Pepper I think. I was brought to tears many times.
At some point at the end of the ep1 I found my guitar in my hands where it remained, and excepting flights of fancy and some magical thinking, the feeling like I was there jamming with them was a rare pleasure. That in spite of their brilliance - or because of it, they could include everybody in their stupendous musical gift. The sense of mere boys conquering the world is strong, the lesson that for them there is no further prize as they grope through this project.
For me it's more poignant now after so much time. In our age of mis/disinformation, how the breakup narrative was so cockeyed. In an age militarized police the innocent bobby is doubly touching.
It was great reading your memories, really appreciate you sharing Dave! Yes up until 3 years ago neither of us had ever heard a Beatles album, songs yes but never an album. We have the entire discography up with album reviews of each and then we went back recently and ranked the individual songs on each albums as well as 9 vids on the Anthology and several other things.

We actually have watched it BUT it was way back before we had even been through half their albums. Need to rewatch now that we have such a different understanding and appreciation for them. Thanks for the reminder!

One minor thing that made me chuckle is John asks about Tucson during a rehearsal, and Paul explains that it's where they make High Chapparal. He neglects to mention it's where Linda was living when they met and what inspired her to become a photographer. I'm pretty sure it's just that he wanted to secretly shoutout his future wife :)

There is two different aspects going on. One is the Beatles breaking up and the other is them falling out. The break up was looming and they all felt it (they should have just took time off to do their own thing for a year which George discussed with John). Paul being the only one not wanting to break up. The falling out was over money and John wanting Allen Klien as there new manager. Paul did not agree. Its interesting though that John wanting Allen to manage the Beatles meant he wasnt looking to break up. John did mention that they were lost without Brien Epstein but John and George could not accept Paul trying to 'manage' the Beatles.

Great observations! I loved the Get Back series. In 1970, I was just getting into The Beatles in a big way & my older brother took me to see Let It Be in the theater. It was very different from the Hard Days Night Beatles I was more into at that time, but I remember really liking the rooftop concert. Anyway, 51 years later, I was struck by how young The Beatles were. Even at the end of their incredible time together, they ranged in age from 25 to 28. This combined with their lack of manager introduced additional stresses into the group. If Epstein had lived or if they had found a good replacement, I wonder how things would have changed. Perhaps a manager would have enlisted a writer or director to help give Magical Mystery Tour more structure as a show, could have prevented to financial fiasco of their Apple Corps business, and would have allowed them to focus on music and other interests rather than getting sucked into business meetings in which none of them had an appropriate background. I thought your list of items was great-the only quibble is I think most musicians would say Ringo is a better drummer than Paul.

It's funny what some people think is a strength! John and George bonded on their first Dentist Appointment together and Paul was the odd man out. Paul didn't like acid for obvious reasons. (he couldn't let go of his ego). But George and John could so they were much more apt to be loose. This made for excellent music if not for great discipline.

a bit late, maybe you should revisit some of paul’s solo work, because there are a lot of wonderful hidden gems and if you like his beatle stuff, you will definitely like most of his solo stuff too

great reaction and thoughtful commentary, as always. I agree, this was epic to watch. I would be in seventh heaven to watch all 60 hours, no problem for me at all. I always knew the discord was way over exaggerated and I'm glad this version came out to show it. In fact I think they were even more harmonious without the glare of the cameras. I have always leaned Lennon but have always loved them all. Ringo is a genius drummer, and no Paul is not in his league on drums, but Paul is a creative musical genius. As is John, just in a very different way. As Bowie articulated, "I felt such kin to him as much as he would rifle the avant-garde and look for ideas that were so on the outside on the periphery of what was the mainstream and then make them apply in a functional manner to something that was considered populist and make it work.” “He would make the most odd idea and make it work for the masses I thought that was just so admirable. I mean, that was like making art work for the people and not sort of having it as an elitist, you know. The thing there was just so much about in that I admire, he was tremendous”, David Bowie said.
I have million and one things to say about this outstanding documentary but you both have highlighted some brilliant parts.

@@ReactionsToTheClassics wow 18 more hours - heaven! I really want to see the original released as well. It gets knocked as being negative but i loved it and thought it was really well done. Plus there are some wonderful exchanges that were left our of Peter's for obvious reasons as he was trying to present something new and original. I do believe the reason Lennon is 'quieter' in this documentary is that it was a Macca idea and he, and George, weren't all that into it. He became much more animated and lively when they went to the studio and definitely when Billy arrived. i thought made an enlightening point when he said at one part of the documentary to Paul (words to the effect) "I'm letting you and George have your way" suggesting more input. Anyway it is a joy to be a kind of fly on the wall. I mean we are sooo lucky that the best band ever had a film crew recording so much material. I'll watch this forever. great stuff.

Your energy and enthusiasm makes up for a lot even all these years really helps . . At the time as a teen . . The only refuge was the Blue Album. Thanks again ! I’m was one of those marginal Beatles fans. I knew their significance and liked many of their songs. This gave me a whole new perspective however, and I’m now on a Beatles deep dive. I’ve already learned to play half the Let It Be album and starting on Abbey Road

I enjoyed the fact that as a viewer I have heard these songs a thousand times, while the Beatles on screen have never heard them. Also the cigarette smoking told an interesting story about human emotion.

...love your reaction, Guys... haven't even seen yet Peter's epic cut, but have followed the Beatles and seen the rooftop performance (short version) several times over the years... what I find so amazing is how thin the line was then to actually get it out at all... 1) as you also commented on: Paul and Ringo pushed it, to get out on the roof (which could have failed just a few moments before it happened); and 2) they actually pushed out Abbey Road first (which was recorded shortly after this one), and the Let it be material was just lying around, and no one wanted to pick it up anymore... finally they pushed it into Phil Spector's lap, who did his way of producing it (wall of sound; hollywood-style bombastic chorus work), which appalled Paul and John, but they couldn't stop the release anymore - thankfully, I have to say in retrospective... and now we even have this epic to watch... I would love to see a similar epic about Abbey Road, but alas that won't happen, as I think there is no (or very little) filming material about it...

Just a thought, Ringo could have stayed long enough to put down his drum parts the be free to do his film Magic Christian. The others could have remained to fine tune the material. Then again Ringo had to be around for the final show.

Liverpudlians are known for having very caustic humour.… ie John Lennon was a classic example, not drug related but I agree, he looks like he’s checked out and the clownish behaviour was a side effect. So many fascinating moments. So proud that a fellow NZer delivered this for the world, overall I found it so uplifting and inspiring!

I want to see it but I don't have Disney. I did hear it will come out on Blu-ray and I hope it does. But I am ambivalent because I know there will also be a lot heartache in it too. Seeing songs I know being created and J&P in sync would be impossible to pass up to see. I have heard others say they had to watch it in pieces because it made them emotional at times. I was 11 when I became aware of Let It Be being played on the radio in 1970. During some rough teen years Hey Jude was my anchor and solace. As single artists John and Paul are the ones I listened to. I think Paul's "Here Today" sums up how bittersweet I expect this to be for me. I loved your video and plan to watch more of them. Thank you.

The band’s embarrassment of riches allowed them to literally cherry-pick ideas, and leave other brilliant ideas behind in order to create their ultimate sound!

The proposed concert on Primrose Hill (instead of the rooftop) feels like a huge missed opportunity to me, it's got one of the best views over London UK there, and would have been rather special I believe.
It would have been unreal, I read permit problems stopped it, not sure if that is true.
I've seen the original documentary a number of times (I had it on VHS tape but lost it) and noticed that some parts of it aren't in Get Back. I wonder why.
Peter Jackson started from scratch on editing so I am guessing he found those parts unnecessary.
This was a good recap of the Get Back documentary. I hope there’s no RTTC breakup like The Beatles, ha ha. Can we get a documentary 20 years from now on the making of RTTC.

My two favorite moments. Paul’s misty eyes when he’s lost in thought after George walked out. Ringo too, but Paul is clearly emotional. Later, after George rejoins, the camera has a closeup of George watching the magic happening between Paul and John. What’s he thinking? “I’ll never be in their league.” Or “I’ll never be part of their brotherhood.” Or some of both?

The insane thing about this documentary that I had to keep in the front of my mind while watching it, is that George was 25 at the time. He wouldn't turn 26 until the following month.

38 pounds in 1969 is 540 pounds in today's money, so Mal may 1160 pounds a month by today's standard. That's about $1555. That to say, he wasn't paid a pittance. In 1969, he made a good salary, I think. One site says engineers made 14 pounds a week in the '60s. So he did alright for himself. He was a lovely part of the documentary.
The point to that was he was paid the same thing in 1963 and 1969, some may see that as a bit odd as we did. Also he had a family and was struggling financially. So not looking to break it down in 1960's to today's terms, he was the right hand man for the biggest band in the world and while many others saw their pay with The Beatles skyrocket he did not. A bit odd to say the least.
I reckon Mal and Neil were taken advantage of a bit by the Beatles. I think one of them admitted it years later
