Hi! Thanks for your comment. Sorry to hear about your Barred Rock. We've lost of few of our lovely ladies as well. They have small brains but HUGE personalities and they touch our hearts deeply.
It's pleasure, restful contentment. Our two bantam hens used to do it when falling asleep on the back of the sofa at night sometimes, when the house was quiet. I think it meant they were warm and felt safe, and were growing sleepy. I think it may also be a hens-only thing... it bears some similarity to their broody noises.
@@MediaFilter No, this is definitely NOT purring. This is a warning sign, that something isn't quite right, may be dangerous, to watch out, there might be a predator approaching, or something like that. They do that a lot as they go to sleep as this is a vulnerable time for them. You only HEAR it when it's all quiet. They do this to warn the others to keep a look out for predators. Not a "let's relax" sound at all!
If a chicken is standing still, erect and the face turns red then yes, it can mean that something is flying overhead. Sometimes it's an airplane, sometimes it's a crow and sometimes it's an aerial predator. A warning sign of danger above. Sometimes they make no noise at all if they see an aerial predator, they just run. If, however, they are relaxed, dusting in the dirt or are laying on the ground sunning themselves it is a sign of contentment. We rescued a chicken from horrible conditions and sat for 45 minutes in chairs outside with her as she dusted herself and trilled the entire time. There are slight variations to the sound and intensity between contentment and danger, there is also different body language. This video is showing contentment, not danger.
@@alleycat8000 No, that particular sound they'll never make when content. There are other sounds of contentment. This isn't one of them. I've raised chickens since I was 9 years old and all through my life and spent a lot of time with them. I know what I'm talking about. Chicks do trill when warm and content, but it's a different sound, not the one in the video.
oh yea both of mine makes that sound to but more gently, but sadly one is up with the angels now. I was hoping that the sounds they made didn't mean anything bad ahah
That's pretty cool! I've never heard mine do that! Right now we have GSL's (that we rescued) RIR's and a couple of EE's. I'd like to get a few Astrolorps and silver spangled hamburgs (sp?) I'm waiting to get more until I build a new coop this summer.
Our Australorp's don't have much of a personality, but they certainly have the biggest vocabulary of the chickens we have. Check out the video of Sound of a Black Australorp Chicken video. We just added 3 juvies to our very small flock, 1 RIR, 1 Barred Rock and 1 Golden Comet. Good luck with your coop this summer!
Hi! Thanks for watching. The black chicken is called a Black Australorp. They originated in Australia and were introduced to the United States around the 1920s.
Can you tell me what these three hens are? (They are beautiful)! I can make good guesses, but just to be sure. I have a big bossy cuckoo maran but thinking yours is maybe barred rock? I have a New Hampshire Red but yours may well be another but look very similar even in the tail feathers. (know a lot of the reds look a lot alike). Your Black Hen (Black Orpington maybe)? is gorgeous. They all are and look so healthy. Thank you for the trills!!
I wouldn't say it's trilling, imo trilling is the more melodious sound they make when they talk to you, but that's definitely an interresting noise 😂 Mine could make a purr sound too, it was crazy 😂
My rooster always does that sometimes. I've been wondering what it means since the hens always freeze if he does that. Maybe some kind of warning sound?
I think it depends on the situation. if they are relaxing it's a sound of contentment, if out and about and a bit more intense, it's like a danger or lookout for danger sound.
I've heard people say that the trilling of a chicken can be mistaken for a cat's purr; those people have either never heard a cat purr, or never heard a chicken trill. That sounds NOTHING like a purring cat. Like, at all! I remain befuzzled as to why some people say such moronic things.
They remember being dinosaurs...and want to let us know that.
Cladistically, they still are dinosaurs! Small feathered theropod dinosaurs did exist alongside giant dinosaurs, and survived to become today's birds.
You are so right! I'm always asking how my little dinosaurs are doing!! And their eyes always remind me of Jurassic Park!
whats amazing is no matter how big the chicken is they can still stand on 1 leg . lol
Little velociraptors! XD
Good one!!
Clever girl...
It means they're happy
@@Jackofallthetrades lol
Always when i see chickens i say fricken dinosaurs
Our chickens do that when there is a strange noise.
They sound funny.
Wow, finally found a video of a chicken making that sound. My chooks make that sound too. Thanks for the post, now at least I know what it's called.
Same
Is it happy or angry?
@@billyb4790 happy
You have your chickens outside.
Hilarious!🤣
This helped me put some orphaned chicks to sleep, thank you
I"m glad this video helped with the tragedy of losing their mother.
Now that's some beautiful girls!
They are making little t Rex sound
Happy ladies for sure 😊
That's interesting. My chickens only do that to each other if they feel really at peace or threatened.
So cute and FLUFFY!
That's their danger noise. Some chooks do a very fast version of the egg song for a danger noise.
The fast egg song you are talking about means ground predator. The one in the video is aerial predator.
@@orazia2oh I didn’t know this distinction, cool!
Such beautiful contented ladies...
Mine do that when they're in the nesting boxes
Aww cute

😁💕 same you I think these age of chicken it's like ladies 😅
💗💕💕💕💕Two of These look my hens too!!
Came here to get them to get intrigued and let me rest a little more as they are bugging to go out and it's too cold yet😂
Trilling definitely has a spectrum.
They are waiting for the rain to stop
They sound like cats
They are very curious as well, so we call them cats with feathers!!
those lil sweetie t-rex 😍😍😍😍
Mine seem to make that trilling sound when they are nervous. They don’t like blue jays. 😄
Thank you, I have been trying to find out what this sound means, at least now I know what it is called.

My cockeral makes funny little noises. Sometimes he sounds like a whistling kettle.
That would be a great video! They do make a lot of different noises and are very entertaining!!
Fluffy dinosaurs...

Very happy chickens😀
Thats the warning call because of the crow
I love how hens peck
Tiny little brains, but BIG personalities! We have them peck at the door sometimes. Like, hey...get out here and give us some treats!!

Trilling..... I had called it purring. My Annie dose that all the time during cuddles
This noise is the sky alarm call, for things like hawks. The chicken purr noise is more soft and less high pitched
