  • I've just gotten a little fed up with people using the excuse the bike they bought doesn't have character or lacks soul to get rid of them.

Interesting topic. Thank you. My take... Here in the USA a motorcycles are more often purchased not for transportation needs but for fun or recreation, unlike in many parts of the world, especially Asia. Never seen the "scooter courier" turn around for one more look at the bike while walking away from it over there. Here they are purchased by "enthusiasts" who are looking to satisfy an obscure want, not a need. I think something different that stands out from the crowd that you won't see on every other corner and that you can't forget best satisfies this. Unlike many other necessary things that we purchase, it's usually not the best or most reliable hassle free boring "appliance" like device we seem to desire in a motorcycle. Take some of my vintage bikes for example. Yamaha RD350... have to "choke" it, have to kick start it. It vibrates, it smokes, it smells and sounds wonderful...to me, anyway. Honda 650 Turbo...incredibly interesting sounds and unique, entertaining and "intoxicating" power delivery. The Morgan 3 wheeler has got to be close to the ultimate definition of "character" in a motor vehicle if there really is one. The "enthusiast" will appreciate all of this but it will be lost to others entirely. It is hard to explain and it is often even hard for that enthusiast to know what characteristics might become magically attractive over time. It's "to each their own" I suppose and that's what makes it interesting.

Very nice thoughts and insights Roy.👍👍 The vehicles you purchase are generally unique, rare or classic styed. The assethics are critical to the appeal of vehicle for you and you instantly know this or that bike fits your personality.
There are universally acclaimed motorcycles out there that I know would not satisfy you but they may be perfect for someone else. Some riders out there that disparce bikes as no question boring or dull because it doesn’t fit their personality or riding style.
You have definite mental picture of what you want to buy unfortunately some others don't and then blame the bike.

Totally agree with your thoughts, Bikes do reflect the perssonality of the rider. And I think Character builds over time. The odd scratch appears, you adjust the chain, you have a great ride out , The breakdown, the time when you were late and it got you there. Memories are characrter building over time. And the longer you have a bike the more reluctant you are to sell for another. Great talking point and I'm sure there will be many opinons, all different but all correct. Cheers

I had one bike 44 years before letting it go to guy to restore it . I hope he offers it back to me.

Some people get a thrill on a Honda Monkey!🙉
It's the person, not the bike, with the character.

I absolutely agree, my bikes are an extension of me, and who I am as a rider…..

No, but a lot of bikes do capture the hearts of one who's looking at it. It all comes from the person. The bike no, but the rider who exploits the bike's abilities is what makes it soulful or have the character.

My nc750x can seem a bit bland to many, but for me, I can 100% rely on it and it's a good mile muncher, it also gives me the extra storage for travelling to events etc. I couldn't get rid of it at the moment.
Each to there own really isn't it. Thought provoking vid that 💭👍

I think a good percentage of riders might agree with you on the NC750 before throwing a leg over it and riding it awhile. Sometimes it takes a bit of time to appreciate what the motorcycle is good at. I've been wrong almost every time when I've have NOT explored what the bike can and cannot do.

Yep, agree with all you said.
For me, time is important. Getting to know your machine: day to day running, setting up suspensions, basic tuning for better performance, knowing those awkward fastenings, looking at the beauty of the engineering. Over the years I realised my T140 and even my CB1100 def had soul, they knew me and took me everywhere I wanted. Not bad for lumps of metal. Cheers man.

Thanks Johny. Some riders aren't honest with themselves on what they want when they purchase a bike and are disappointed when the bike does not match their expectations.

@@flatcapcaferacer There's plenty of information out there to find out before buying, it should be much more than a fashion fad or is it just good advertising making you buy.

@johnyoung6498 There are plenty of sources out there. Some folks can afford to make throw away purchases and don't to their homework. I think these are the people who I don't pay a lot of attention to.

TMF was saying his Kawasaki 900RS was lacking character.... he went with a louder exhaust.
Honestly, this character thing can be interpreted in many ways. Sometimes a good, smooth, reliable, comfortable bike is described as lacking character.
I think my bike's character has a hooligan streak and does need restraint to ride lawfully

Your MT-10 is certainly a motorcycle that comes with an edge. Andy has always been on the conservative side of riding and his Kawasaki is pretty docile unless it is spanked a bit. I think if he road your MT-10 he would find it more characterful because it is begging to be unleashed.😄😄

I read the title as 'do motooggers have soul/character' 😆
My Bandit, c90ish and Himalayan have character. My fazer didn't.
I just bought a bike that some people accuse of not having character but i think it does and people say that because its super reliable.

Some motorcycles take a bit of searching to find the spark we love. The rider and motorcycle aren't always a good fit and sometimes people label bikes a certain way because it did match up with their skills and desires.

I like to think I’m in the category of buying a bike based on what I want out of it. Neither one of my bikes has great looks, and certainly the sound is nothing… in my case, I think both my bikes have a ton of character!

I think every (ICE) bike has character and a soul, not finding either may be down to the rider failing to bring out that character or find the spirit within themselves to match the bike. A bike can be seen as a living breathing entity, it has a pulse, a heartbeat, when the rider is atune with his bike it's speaks to him/her. My starter bike was a Raleigh Wisp, the most laughable excuse for a motorcycle that there ever was. It was like a push bike with a 50cc engine and a pint pot of a fuel tank, it went nowhere fast but it got me where I wanted to go.
Like you say Jerry it's what you expect out of it and what you put into it which adds the character and brings life to the soul. Electric bikes on the other hand have no pulse, no heartbeat, they don't breathe and they have no soul, they give off a Vibe rather than vibrate with frequency. I want to hear and feel it purr, I want to hear and feel it roar, I want it's soul to shine and mine to soar.
