I'm surprised that HD didn't use a shielded cable to reduce the chance of EMF to be induced into a low voltage cables. Thanks Doc for the heads up!!!!!
Doc, this is the best HD resource media that is on the internet. Your show and information is the best. I just bought the 2023 CVO Road Glide and noticed that it makes a faint humming/clicking noise when it is off. I narrowed it down to a relay switch (REF: 71400100 ("Relay ,SPDT, Sealed, Micro W/RES SUPP)) located under the seat and under the braking control system. It rides great and am having no issues, but the sound is concerning. I believe that it shouldn't be making this sound. I informed my HD service shop and they said they didn't know why it was making that sound. I've owned HD bikes and never heard any noises before. Is this normal on this bike, or I am correct to be concerned with the relay making this noise while turned off. thank you. Keep up the great work. You should have your own television show.
Thanks for watching and posting. I am curious. Your year and model has a Body Control Module instead of relays. So what is making the noise? Your bike probably has security. Does the noise come on the same time the security flashes the turn signals? Does your security also have the optional siren? Just wondering if the noise has to do with the bike powering down…Doc
thanks for your help. The 2023 CVO RG does have a security system and siren. I only hear the noise when its off, its very faint but i can hear it when i am standing near the bike. I can hear it when I walk into my garage. LOL It sounds similar to a fish tank air bubble motor, but faint and constant, it never stops. I looked at the HD website and looked at the part diagrams, thats where i got the part information from, they look like relays. Thanks for responding. @@LowCountryHarleyDavidson
Well doc everything you just taught me has nothing to do with my old 98 Evo. But it was really interesting. I’ve never considered not soldering wires side by side.
Doc, thanks for the information...My ride is a 2012 FLHTK, but it does help to be knowledgable should I find a CAN BUS bike broken on the side of the road...
Doc Would you do a video on the M8 comparing the liquid cooled versus the oil cooled and use a day that temperatures are in the 90 plus degrees riding in stop and go traffic. I understand the liquid cool just cools the exhaust part of the heads and not the oil. IMO then oil cooled would be better option because you can add those fans on the side
Hey Doc, Here is one that is driving me nuts. LED turn signals on a 2023 FXLRST that are working properly. However, the dash is flashing at hyper speed. Tried a few learning techniques that involve the 4 way flashers with no luck. PS Thank you for the videos!
What you see will not hurt your bike. It has to do with the LED you chose. The Amazon lights can not be programmed right. Some Dynamic lights can be told to work right by the dealer computer. The expensive HD LED would be working right😄. The BCM only likes a certain resistance. Your of course is not🤷♂️…Doc
Hello Doc Harley, just a question from one tech to another. According to the Motor Company, when dealing with the can/bus system, that you shouldn't cut and solder the wires at all due to the fact of how sensitive the BCM is to voltage fluctuations and by soldering you are introducing that into it. Also would like to know your procedure for replacing a faulty front brake light switch on a BCM bike, do you replace the entire control module? or do you cut and solder in the replacement switch? thank you.
You are correct to a point. BCM is sensitive but a broken wire can be repaired. Of course the Factory encourages replacement. The new controls are an assembly and can not be repaired as the separate switch functions of the past…..Doc
Hey, Doc - do you ever do any videos on cleaning your motorcycle? I just bought a 2018 Fat Boy and I am confused about how to clean and protect the aluminum wheels…
Would putting a choke (Ferris clamp) on either the CAN bus wires or the stereo wiring help the RF interference? I know I had trouble with a LED headlight interfering with my radio on a 2012 ultra classic and it seemed to help. just curious. another great video. Thanks, Duffy.
Awesome video as usual 👍 I had a question about my 2018 Harley ultra Limited. I have two bigger imported maps in my navigation and they won’t load and keeps crashing my system. I’ve been trying to delete them off there but can’t open them up to delete them. Is there another way you can remove them?
Quick question. (2016 Road Glide Special) Had the bike on tender. Turn bike on & move it, a few mins. later started the bike up. VINERR code popped up. Never had problems with codes etc; Changed the battery. Codes still appear.. Didn't clear the codes. However the bike starts up & runs good, no issues. Only thing is the speedo & tact. jump around, battery light goes red (shows no voltage) radio cuts in & out. Any solutions??
Hi Doc, every time a pleasure to collect information given by you. Greetings from overseas

It's a great idea but i'm not surprised because HD wants you to bring the bike to the dealer for repairs.

Excellent advice Doc
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 always appreciated, thanks Doc
Thanks David….Doc
Offset solder joints are easier to get through small openings also. (Not that you would want to put small wires through small ports!) 😊
Not going to lie, I want to hear about the '79 XLH in the background
Great tips,

would electrical tape and/or shrink tube be enough insulation to prevent influence?

Please take it to dealer to have software put back to Pre-calibration Factory reset.
When was the last time you updated the Nav Software?…..Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson I’ve updated the software that you find on Harley’s website. Is what your talking about different than that?

No….Doc
Down the road if they haven't already done so. They will use shielded wire to prelectro a magnetic flux from influencing the data flow.
Got a question Doc.
Can I connect the wires directly to the battery to power un extra set of LED Fog lights.
The leds are going on a 2015 Street Glide
Yes but must have a dedicated fuse in the power wire….Doc

That’s no quick answer. You have a connection loose or a ground wire broken….Doc
Any update for the video you did on the discontinued turn signal module on the older bikes ?
I bought a TSM for my 2000 FXDWG directly from the H-D online store. They were on backorder. I had to wait about 6 weeks.
No update yet. ….Doc
Does that system use 2 120 ohm termination resistors?
Huge impedance bump in that solder joint for a digital signal, also use rosin core and NOT acid core
