That woman with the black hair is Joanne Catherall... I saw her for the first time when I was 10 years old, and she has basically set my concept of "My Kryptonite" ever since!! ❤❤💯
This is their biggest hit *BUT* they have so many *BETTER* ones. "Keep Feeling Fascination" and the ballad "Human" are stellar. And early '80s videos often had no relation to the lyrics!
The video meaning was about a movie actress who blew up, leaving the jilted man behind in the dust. Video producers made the video to look like a black and white movie filmed on a rainy night in England. And why the female vocalist wore a trench coat - for a 1940s London fog type effect. A creative video, for 1981, that costed a lot to make bc parts were literally photographed in black and white. The video is dark and shadowy, by-design.
WOW...The human League...Ice T...you got me on pause...going back to the best Era EVER....Man YOU SHOULD HAVE A MILLION FOLLOWERS!!! YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHEN I LISTEN TO MOST OF THE MUSIC YOU REACT TO...YOU TAKE ME N A-LOT OF YOUR FOLLOWERS TO A SPECIAL PLACE N TIME!!! I FREAKIN LOVE LOVE LOVE YOU!!!!
Thee signature synth track of the 80s. Not cool like funk or soul but was cutting edge in its time. Human Keague were 1 of a small handful of Brit groups brave enough to use synthesizers & make albums w no guitars or traditional drums. When this song dropped there was nothing else like it, esp. the synth opening.
Wow, I haven’t heard this in ages! It’s sooo 80s. This song was inescapable when it was out, playing everywhere. It’s kind of fun to hear it again, although I wasn’t really a fan of theirs - it’s a great pop song though. The song is about a guy who helped a young woman become successful in her career ( in the video they portrayed it as being an actress or performer of some kind) , and now that she’s big, she’s not interested in knowing him, having him in her life, etc, and he’s saying What the ? basically. Nice reaction 🙂
Pretty great video for the time. Most videos then were just a collage of weird images but this one actually tells a story consistent with the song. Ahead of its time in many ways.
I remember when this song came out,,lol. In the 80's there were a huge group of London based musicians coming out. Like Human League, Petshop Boys, Banana Rama, Thompson Twins, there was a black girl duo I can't remember their name but they had a song entitled Hippie Chick.. Buddy don't put too much thought in understanding the videos of the 80's it was about being beautiful on camera..lol
The Human League are from Sheffield, their first song was under the group name "The Men". I went to some of their early gigs around the city. Thompson Twins are from Chesterfield. Pet Shop Boys are from Blackpool and North Shields but were working and formed in London The "Hippy Chick" song was by a group called Soho (from Wolverhampton) and was a hit in the very early 90s (had a Smiths "How Soon Is Now" sample in it). Other Sheffield bands Heaven 17, ABC, Def Leppard, Artic Monkeys, Pulp, Cabaret Voltaire, Moloko, Babybird, Longpigs ...amongst others... Saw most of them a few times live...
It looks like he's a movie director who discovered an actress, they had a relationship and she decided to move on, he hasn't and feels like she owes him for her career. It seems pretty straightforward to me.
Hey just jamming.. I really appreciate what you are sharing with the Reaction Community. May I suggest or if I may request your reacting to one of the best female vocalist I know.. Loletta Holloway.. Hit n Run. Thankfully in advance .God Bless. Rich Delgado from Red Hook Brooklyn NY

They were popular for a couple yrs with a few hits. The context is he made her famous then she outgrew him
this is one of the 80s songs that gets played at every 80s party haha. I don't complain, it's pop perfection to me
