Thanks for posting. Few people realize how good Bird was at the defensive end early in his career. His anticipation and good hands lead to many steals & he blocked alot of shots & earned all def team honors 3 times. His footwork & work ethic earned many rebounds & once in his career he was 1 steal away from having a quadrupledouble before the end of 3rd qtr & sat out rest of game. When told on bench what his stats were, he still sat out "we were up by 30 the game was over, what would it prove"

As I’ve grown older I come to appreciate and even respect birds game even more. You could say I matured. When I was young I was an MJ fan but when you get older you get wiser and are not manipulated by the media. Bird was a superior player in a few categories on Jordan not to mention he was a better team player, even better clutch, shooter rebounder and made his team better, and that my friend is leadership. MJ is more athletic, flashier, and had that stoic competitive fire no doubt. But now that I’ve gotten older I see it in a whole new light. I would choose bird over Jordan. Remember the commercial I want to be like Mike...nah I would want to be like bird.

Bird worked so hard to get open, get a rebound or a steal. He was in great shape, always had gas in the tank at the end for a clutch shot, pass or rebound.

The sheer saturation of great, heads-up, intelligent plays Bird makes is without parallel. So just in one play he may make a steal, then a quick outlet pass, roll off a pick to get open, clever shot, offensive rebound, amazing assist. All in 30 seconds.

This was a classic case of styles make fights- Boston was known for solid defense, but they could light it up against anyone as well. Against a Denver team that scored-scored-scored, he was capable of adjusting to their damn-the-torpedoes styl.e
Bird and the C's could adapt to any style- they could go point-for-point with Denver or slug it out with the Sixers.

Bird truly was better than Jordan. The ppl who are usually the loudest in disagreement with my opinion are usually 25 to35 yrs old, they've only seen a few of LB's highlight reels and they're generally less educated about the game. Bird was usually a step or 2 behind at running, jumping, etc BUT mentally he was 3-4 steps ahead of everyone. Combine that with superior leadership abilities over Jordan. Birds teammates totally respected him, followed his lead, and had total faith in him. Bird would pass up a money shot and instead make a quick assist .. even with the Celtics weakest links. LB fully understood the long term importance of getting ALL of his team involved. Jordan wanted all of the limelight. The first 6 years of his career I think he'd rather lose the game but rack up 50+ pts rather than spread the ball around. it was "me me me me me". Jordan fools always complain about how weak the rest of the Bulls were ('84 to '88). Well I disagree. I think had Jordan's teammates ended up in Boston the LB would have brought out the best in Cartwright the same as he did with Parish. LB would have loved the extra help crashing the boards with Oakley. LB would have helped Oakley become the much needed Celtic "muscle" very beneficial for wars with Philly and Detroit. Paxson=Ainge. And on and on. LB was the king of the intangibles too. Countless contributions that don't fall under any stat category. Meanwhile Jordan ran and jumped high with his silly tongue hanging out like a stinky old hound dog. Jordan dunked, LB usually did lay-ups. Each=2pts. Jordan seemed to be an A-hole to a lot of his teammates. By talking down to them and acting like his poo doesn't stink he planted a cancer in the 80's Bulls era. Jordan's teammates held resentments towards him. I'm sure this affected their focus and performance. Jordan made the game UNfun for those guys (except Pippen). Team chemistry was non existent. Year after year Birds Celts swept Jordan's Bulls in both the reg season and playoffs. Jordan scores 63, the Bulls lose by 10, 20 or 30. Birds rookie season he led the charge in totally turning around the 1980 Celtic team. I don't have the numbers on hand but The Celts won 60+ in LB's rookie season and they only won 25-35 games the previous year. Bird was a BETTER shooter than Jordan. Especially at 3's. Bird was more clutch than Jordan. MJ did have a lot of buzzer-beaters, but LB had a higher shooting % at FG's and 3's. LB just had ice in his veins with " 5 seconds left and down by 2". Larry would sometimes pass up going to the paint for a closer shot and try to draw a foul ... he'd pass that up and instead nail a 3 to get the W and avoid messing with OT. Crazy CRAZY confidence. Prior to Pip, Kukoc, Rodman coming in Jordan couldn't get beyond the first rd in the playoffs. He just didn't have the ability or even awareness to uplift his teammates spirits, think pass before shoot (especially always trying to get the closest/simplest shot possible. LB would sometimes get a wild hair and I personally believe he'd decide he's gonna score a lot before certain games. Look up 1985 Bird vs Hawks in New Orleans. LB put up 60 that night. Why?? because he could. Actually McHale had just set a Celtic PPG team record a few days prior by scoring 55-56 can't remember. Anyway LB suddenly had a little "game within a game" and decided that HE wanted that record for himself. Nearly ZERO on court celebrating from LB that night. Just business. He maintained that stoic look on his face throughout as he totally torched Atlanta. Watch the vid closely and you'll notice that by the 4th Qtr even the Hawks bench was celebrating, having fun, witnessing history. I could go on all and may actually write more another time, but anyway Bird>Jordan. I believe that anyone who takes the time to seriously research the Jordan vs Bird subject will at least begin to lean towards LB more and more the more they read, watch,
bubstudy. PS I will admit that MJ was superior to LB in the annual slam dunk contest.

His image and reputation were cultivated by David Stern, ESPN and NIKE, McDonalds etc. Anyone who really knows basketball, like the old time players and coaches, have trouble with the MJ is GOAT statement. Anyone who states otherwise is not allowed to work for NBA, ESPN or ABC. Watch carefully, if you want a job with those companies you have to kiss MJ's ass.

And did so in a FAR better era than Jordan played in. MJ is the second most overrated athlete ever behind only Muhammad Ali and Bird the most underrated. Larry Legend is the greatest EVER! FACT. They said that same crap about Magic. Imo, anything either of those two didn't absolutely excel in was over-exaggerated as a liability. You tell me how many 6'9" guys in their day who were doing all of that coordinated running, spinning, stealing, etc. No one ever called Chris Mullin unathletic, for example. No one called Alex English unathletic. You only hear that about Bird and Magic because it was one of the few areas where they weren't completely dominant.

    • @jorgenrexolson6451

If you think about it, it’s similar to the situation in soccer with Leo Messi. Messi is the best, and yet some have trouble dealing with it because he doesn’t necessarily “look” the part. He’s an outlier. He dominates the game, even if he doesn’t dominate in all ways, or looks like the stereotypical player. Jordan fits the mold of a stereotypical player more in terms of his great athleticism and scoring prowess, and yet Bird was undeniably better as a player, and arguably so was Magic.

On the opposite, you didn't really hear Bobby Jones of the Sixers ever get called athletic. He definitely was. Same for Tom Chambers. Mark Jackson wasn't the only black dude whose head he dunked over, trust. Josh McRoberts can go up and hammer a lob that a lot of supposed athletes can't get to and you'll hear that he can jump, but not that he's an athlete, and that's weird because most people key on vert as the standard mark of athleticism in bball.

You know, a lot of people have said that Bird wasn't very athletic, but he actually was actually pretty athletic, I mean he did average close to 1 block in his career, and 10 rebounds, you do need some athleticism to do this. He also reportedly had a 28 in. vertical, which was at or slightly higher that the average at the time.

    • @busterkeaton1001
      @busterkeaton1001 Рік тому

Early in his career like here, you see how bouncy, active, on his toes he played. Definitely different from late 80's. He was athletically gifted in some ways and in others not. His hands were fantastic, he had great stamina, great balance,....but were he truly gifted he would have averaged a lot more than 1 block a game with his size, a bit over 6'9" and amazing anticipation.
I have heard about his 28 inch vertical and don't know the source of that, but dude was not a leaper. I think 28 inches was his max on a dead run. He was not a standstill leap up and dunk guy. I don't think I've ever see him do that.
I also think he if was a true leaper, he might have never developed the craftier sides of his game.

@@busterkeaton1001 Fair points, I'm mostly saying that when people say he wasn't athletic at all, they are just wrong. In his viral ultimate highlight video, he is regularly dunking and even posterizing people which was actually pretty surprising- especially for the young people that react to the video who thought he was just a shooter! Based on those highlights (albeit early in his career as you mentioned), the 28 in. vert figure seems accurate. Another thing to remember is that he was injured for most of his career, which makes his accomplishments that much more impressive! I agree, if he would've been more athletic, he would've averaged more than 1 BPG, considering his hands, instinct, timing and anticipation. Interestingly, there are a lot of players that are more athletic than Bird was, but still average less or around the same BPG, despite being roughly the same height- like Blake Griffin, Carlos Boozer, even Lebron!
Btw, here's a bit of trivia for you: There was another player who was around the same height as Bird, (6'9) but was a freak athlete (37 inch vert) and crazy wingspan (7'4). He played for a small market team and was the only non center (played mostly SF), and the shortest player to ever lead the league in blocks and average over 3 BPG twice, as well as the only player ever to be top 4 in STL and BLK in one season. He also has 3 5x5s in his career, 2nd only to Hakeem the Dream. Do you know who he is?
