The problem is the lack of alternatives with the farmers. They'll skip rice in a beat if they're provided with a better market for an alternative. Just need to set the industries for other products first.
They do have alternatives such as millet, sorghum, vegetables etc but the alternatives don't yield enough money. The problem with farmers is that they don't earn enough despite all the efforts.
That's because the government invested in big farmers to grow rice in semi-arid areas like Punjab and Haryana without investing in the human resources of the uneducated but rich Northwest regions, which would've made farmers more conscious about the environment, society and sustainability but more importantly encouraged them to strive for a more equal and fair society The contrast between rich Jatt farmers owning big properties and Audis exploiting poor labourers from UP, Bihar and poor farmers committing suicide along with their whole families because of racking up enormous debt is only the result of such shortsighted government interventions Sadly the governments in Punjab and Haryana at this are controlled by the powerful Jatt community who care the least about an egalitarian society and would rather talk about Ram Rajya or Khalistan to distract the public from the appalling wealth inequality in Punjab/Haryana with many of them migrating to Canada using the same wealth the government invested in them

This was a mistake Haryana and Punjab made, paddy cultivation was never for their fields but they used excess urea for the production and the result was fatal. Their fields were best suited for wheat but just for the sake of profit they destroyed their future. I am from eastern UP and I know exactly what it takes for paddy cultivation. We have black soil best suited for paddy cultivation but we grow chana(gram) also so that it can fix nitrogen from the air to the fields. Paddy cultivation need huge amount of water that's why we installed tube wells for the water supply.
The main reason for growing of paddy is the rate of other crops like cotton and millet is very low comparison to rate of paddy .paddy destroyed the fertility of soil but farmer have no other option,if government increase the price of cotton than paddy sowing in haryana is decrease and save water and soil.
Too much water is being pumped out of the ground. This water evaporates and minerals and salt in the water stay in the soil making soil infertile. Groundwater level is decreasing and may lead to droughts.
Punjab should also leave paddy and other water intensive crops. Punjab is not a fertile land inherently, rather a semi-arid area which can't naturally sustain water intensive crop.
There’s a Swiss or Northman research about how to use such salt issues that has something about growing certain potato crops that only only grow fine but remove the salt due to their biological metabolism that breakdown salt molecule for growth. That made sense because potatoes also remove excess salt from cooking pot when added for the purpose. Knowledge shouldn’t be held back from anyone in need. 🇵🇰 from your neighbor!
