In Acient times the rowers were not slaves but freemen who were either citzens who were too poor to serve as land soldiers, foreign residents or hired foreigners. Slaves were only used in times of emergency or when manpower was low even then the Slaves were offered freedom and citzenship to keep them motivated to serve for the city state that had previously enslaved them.
It was only during the late medieval period did slave rowers became common
You beat me to saying this by an hour.
who was still rowing boats in the 15th c?
@@chriswood6170 Almost all countries that bordered the Mediterranean used rowed galleys for fighting in the inland sea. They were better in calm seas because the wind wasn't reliable. An example is the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 which was fought mainly with a few hundred rowed galleys, most rowed by slaves.
@@chriswood6170 Galleys were still very common especially in the Mediterranean and the Baltic as the conditions of those seas were often more suitable for oared ships than ships that had purely sails. Oared ships were still being built in the 17th century and in the case of the Archipelago Frigates of Sweden and Russia they were building oared ships in the 18th century
@@RocketHarry865 thanks. i did remember afterwards about galleys being used around the fall of the byzantine empire in the med / black sea areas. never knew the vikings still used them
“Since it was mostly slaves who were rowers at that time”
That is very much not the case.

"Surprisingly enough, English sailors never rioted because of bad food."

They did once, aboard warspite
@@svidentkyrponos7530 pls explain?
@Katie Cheng
I think it was that, sailors got canned herring in their lunch and it was rotten so they began to protest and they ended up smothering the paymaster's office with that herring

3:26 related fact, when Bismarck was Struck in the rudder by a Torpedo (the move that left them stuck in place until the rest of the Royal navy arived) Bismarcks commanding staff oppened up the food stocks and everyone took as much as they could because they all knew what would happen once the Royal Navy got in gunnery range.
Akizuki : did somebody said riceballs ?
I like how they didn't mention WWII italian or french cooking on ships because they both ate as if they were actually at home lol

US Navy: *ICE CREAM*
I was on a guided tour of the submarine next to the Intrepid in NYC, and the tour guide referred to the ice cream machine as "The most important piece of equipment on the submarine".
@@airplanenut89 that is pure gold right there 😂
My grandfather got rum rations on his RCN ship. I'd take that over ice cream.

well lapkaus means in fact strong food in the vestern dialects of norway we also got the bacalao that was a comon food on norwegian ships in the early 1900 and is still prepered and loved by many many ships got this tradisjon when they set sail or come ashore they eat it
Do they have specific recipe, or just throw whatever they dredged out of the fishing net into a pot?
Me and my Pallas cats Made a Sailor Food Called Latinus Basically a Overcooked Meat to show that Cats are strong also Potatoes Prepared into a Cross like Shape That Tastes like Fries in Case someone cannot take the Very Overcooked Meat
US Destroyer crews loved to save Carrier pilots because when they returned them the crew got free ice cream
Do they still get triple ice cream ration if rescuing a double ace?
HIGH FIVE TO CAP! THERISEOFCAP
Who else thought that they were on an episode of Kurzgesagt?
Also, people from Liverpool are known as scousers in the UK, labscouse to scouser. Liverpool was one of the biggest ports in the world at the height of British naval power.
And then there was the time a US submarine held a pilot hostage for ice cream
I thought it was a destroyer
I mean it's ice cream
I love naval food!
And that's why I joined the army! Say what you will about our SOS but at least you couldn't make buttons out of the leftovers
Now we have all new delicacies such as dirty mac (sloppy joe meat over mac and cheese), hamsters (chicken cordon bleu), death pillows (ravioli), or trailer park steaks (corn dogs)
I know sloppy joe. Why make it with instant mac and chess though? Unless raw macaroni wasn't there.
@@thanakonpraepanich4284 never said it was instant mac and cheese
