  • When Angelina Jordan sang Unchained Melody aged 12, some said she was too young to sing that song. Now at age 17, she is able to offer the song in a different way. Let's put it into context.

Excellent as always, Alan. You bring your unique precpective to Angelina's performances over time. I look forward to the next update in 10 years. Will Angelina be even better? Can she possibly tell a story and convey emotions even better then the mastery she already brings? All the best in 2024. 🍁

In the three weeks since this performance a multitude of rectors have reviewed and given their assessments on the musicality and skill that Ms, Jordan presented this piece. The majority gives Ms. Jordan the highness of praise, especially if they understood the context of the event and setting. In all the reactions I've viewed, I've left the same four comments, expressing my belief that this singular performance, has set Ms. Jordan apart from all current and past vocalist and is a nexus point in world music going foreword. My four comments will be added below. Rb

The parallels to Ms. Callas are uncanny. However in Ms. Jordan's case she is the true unicorn. No one in the musical world that has graced this world, has effected so many and compelled them to be better to themselves and others, just by the force of being. A truly historical moment in musical history. Rb

Each performance is beyond perfection, my favorite is Angelina Jordan's Nobel performance, it touched my heart deeper than the rest, echoing in my brain like a pipe organ sounding in a grand cathedral, setting my soul free from the worries of this world; and settling me down in a place that feels like home, into the arms of the one I love unconditionally ❤️‍🔥 that's how that performance made me feel deep in my being, like a prayer that is asked wholeheartedly from your inner child 🙏 one more thing, I see her as ISIS the Egyptian Goddess, I almost forgot to say it, when you showed that picture of Egyptian Queen, I smile brightly 🌞

I love the way Ms. Jordan can transport us to the remembrances of the past, but let's not forget that this young living legend is a contemporary, a masterclass artist that is continuing to experiment with tone and technique to create a newness in music, that will dominate world music for decades to come. It will be Ms. Jordan's creativity in lyricism and musicality, that will captivate the world in the coming years, to make her name synonymous with greatness. Rb

Alan, thanks for showcasing these 3 great artists, who provided us with their own unique version of this classic song. Angelina always sings the story of the song with the emotion she feels from it, and is able to convey those emotions to the listener. I don't always prefer her version of a song over someone else's, but a majority of the time, I do. The magic of music. We are blessed with so many great artists and we can choose which version we enjoy most. I listen to a wide variety of artists, but Angelina is the one I always return to, so I can feel like I am part of the song, with her voice hugging my soul.

Thank you so much for this presentation of three of the finest vocalist ever, (I would have included Andy as one of the first to ever cover the song).
As for who does it best? We can’t discount Elvis and the pure power he commanded. Bobby, having composed the updated arrangement and then hitting every note flawlessly has been my favorite of all time. Then Angelina with Bobbie’s arrangement, but slowed down with the most emotional performance ever done. My leaky eyes have made up my mind for me. ANGELINA!!!

Thank you for showcasing the four unique and outstanding performances for posterity. True Angelina fans can appreciate the difference between her NH version which brought tears to her audience lucky enough to hear her in person and her NPP version that was sung with much more tenderness and feelings of yearning in acknowledgement of the separation of Narges Mohammadi and her family! 😢

In my opinion, Angelina is the queen when it comes to conveying emotion in a song. It's not just her magnificent vocal tone, texture and versatility, there's something special in her delivery... like an invisible ray that goes directly from her to the listener's heart.
I said it in some of the reactions I've seen to her Nobel Peace Prize performance that Angelina with KORK's backing managed to turn this iconic song into a prayer, like it was sung by Narges to her loved ones ♥

Although all her versions are incredible ,this version from Portsmouth gives you the chills and goosebumps. The emotion one feels listening to her perform is amazing. This song by her is incomparable to any other performers version. She simply has brought vocal delivery to a new and higher level. I truly believe that if handled correctly, this young lady will be the most famous vocalist of all time, as big as Elvis. Another great video from Alan. 🙏🏼

Alan, this, as a reaction was a masterpiece! All 3 singers were out of this world but Angelina sang this song almost PERSONALLY to the two brave young 17 yr. old children of Nergish Mohommadi , present in the audience. I have yet to see a more beautifully tender, heartfelt, brilliant song rendition . She actually was taking on the maternal role of this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner, who is probably going to be incarcerated, imprisoned for life, deprived of her children and husband's physical presence.
There can never be another Angelina. So let us all learn to love, honour and cherish her for all of time! Her voice truly heals universally.

I'm not an "angel", but as terrific as her version was at the Nobel Peace performance, even I believe her rendition at NH was one of the best vocals ever by anyone, with very few exceptions, Whitney (who I feel is the best ever) notwithstanding. I, too, consider Angelina's NH performance "otherworldly", as well. That is when I like her a lot, not when she cackles and whines like Amy and Adele. And I wonder, with such a lovely voice, why does she do that. Amy and Adele can't compare.

Hi Alan 👋 excellent Work as always my friend and fellow Angelina Angel 😇 and great Podcast Moderator with Pontus 👍👌👏Yes, there are really 4 different song variations of this iconic song! Apart from the various ones scoops! riffs! runs! und melismas ! For me, Angelina sings this song most emotionally ♥️ most tenderly clear, smooth, warmth🔥 breathy, a little raspy, with all her passion ❤️‍🔥 her old ✨️soul voice 😲! Exactly appropriate to the occasion as I always say Angelina is like a Cameleon She adapts vocally and tone-wise 😲 always adapts to the song and the situation so she sings 😲 She never sings the same song twice!! What are scoops, melismas, riffs, and runs! "Scoops" are fast sliding notes that create a stylistic effect! On "Melismas" 😲 AJ sings a single 🎶 syllable of the lyrics! while moving multiple notes 🎼 at the same time! Both techniques give the song more expressiveness and flair!! Riffs are 2-3 quickly sung 😲 notes! and Runs are notes that you sing out for longer 😲! Sorry Alan, I don't want to lecture you!! You probably know these musical terms too!! But many reactors know and don't know this very well!! That's why I'll explain that in my comments!! Bye Alan have a great weekend and work and music time 👌Love ♥️! Goodness 💫! Lucky🍀! Health 👨‍🌾! Kindness 😀! Peace 🙏! Freedom 💁‍♂️! and lovely friends! And I wish you a happy 😀 New Year 2024🥂 from the bottom of my heart ❤️‍🔥👍👌👏 Bye 👋 my fellow Angelina Angel 😇greetings from Switzerland 🇨🇭🇨🇭🇨🇭🙋‍♂️!!

In who's company have we enjoyed this 17 year old? Angelina's voice moved me more as always. Her performance at the Nobel peace prize, in my imagination her delicate request by the end becomes a benevolent command from a motherly queen with crown and gown Cleopatraesc, which, would it be heard by the captors of Narges Mohammadi, make them bow low as the gate of the bars swing open by themselves and Narges walks slowly free backed by brilliant angelic light into the loving arms of her family... Angelina, almost 18 owns another global classic.

My absolute favorite is the Angelina Jordan Nobel Peace Prize performance. Her tender awareness of the longing of each family member of the recipient just conveyed it powerfully. This is great! Well done Alan! Angelina found already the right touch to the song at 12. Having been at her concert in Portsmouth, that performance has a special impact on me (and probably on everyone who was there). Nice work Alan! By the way, I just wanted to point out that Angelina is NOT the only person to be invited back for a second time for the Nobel Peace Prize concert. Sinead O'Connor (1994, 1997), Sting (1999, 2016), John Legend(2006, 2017), Wyclef Jean( 2001, 2009), and Kylie Minogue (2007, 2012) were the others. I think you got that from an article/online article that mis-stated that. I remember seeing that too but I'm not sure where though. I think it is safer to say that she is the first performer under the age of 18 to be asked back. Can't wait for the next episode of Wrapped In A Warm Blanket! Season 3 has been so good!

What many see here is Cleopatra VII as portrayed by Liz Taylor.
Cleopatra was the last queen of ancient Egypt, but she was not Egyptian, but Greek - like most high nobility, her first language was Koine Greek and most of the culture was also Greek.
So it fits with the Greek goddess (the ancient Egyptians viewed their kings as living gods).
Cleopatra belonged to the Macedonian-Greek Ptolemaic dynasty, whose European origins date back to northern Greece. Through her father, she was a descendant of two prominent companions of Alexander the Great of Macedonia.

Well done, Alan. I'm so glad you stuck to the relevant versions and didn't dig up a lot of obscure ones. Until the Nobel, my favorite Angelina version was her nine year old performance on Lindmo. Maybe you had to be there for the New Hampshire version to really hit home. It just seemed to be a bit too slow, to me.

    • @robertpalmer9831

Yes, you had to be there to truly appreciate the impact of the slow Porstmouth NH version. As good as Chris' recording was it did not record the resonance of AJ's voice. It was recorded on a cell phone or a video camera afterall. The band laid back on this and it almost felt accapella. The recording, even when played on my reference studio monitors, did not pick up the dynamic range that we experienced missing her hushed low tones which went straight to your soul. I got chills immediately when she sang "Oh.."
To truly appreciate this listen to the NPP performance on a good sound system or good headphones. If you can hear the soft timpani clearly then you'll be able to hear the true nuances of her performance, from almost a whisper to the clarion like final note's vibrato ending with the reverberance of the hall. I felt that both performances were historic for different reasons and show her sensitivity as an artist.
I even liked the quote of Pachebels Canon by the strings behind the phrase " I need your love".
Hopefully we will oneday be blessed with quality recordings of her live performances. They are truly magical.

Highlights of the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony
One of the highlights of the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony in Oslo, Norway, was the stunning performance of Angelina Jordan, who sang Unchained Melody with her soulful voice. This unbelievable classic ballad, composed by Alex North and Hy Zaret, has been covered by many artists, but none like Angelina. As she sang, the words and hypnotic tone wash over you, and you are taken to the most wonderful place you have ever been.
