The movie's underperformance makes me sad to think about. It's a damn good action film with a lot of good ideas that perfectly pays homage to Fury Road while also being more than just glorified fanservice.
Movie goes **loud bass noises combined with motor sounds, birds and screams** Also, I’m glad you’re doing okay now. I know what you mean though. Got through a bit of a cold myself too. Stay strong, My Dude 😎👉👉
Saw it with my brother recently. I didn't realize he hadn't seen Fury Road yet! He said he could follow the story perfectly well, so don't let that stop anyone. What might stop you is some really rough things happen to characters--worse than Fury Road. These films come out so infrequently that people may think of them as just another action movie. But it's the Mad Max universe, after all.
Also, yes, see both movies, but do NOT watch/rewatch Fury Road right *before* you see Furiosa. It makes the new movie look.... lesser by comparison. Wait til the credits roll on Furiosa, then cue up Fury Road and enjoy the continuation.
Aa someone who frequently falls asleep in movie theaters and/or when loud bangs, engine revving, and gunfire/explosions are going off, I can't really explain it, but I promise to stay awake for Furiosa.
Sean, if you want to know about the part of Australia which Fury Road (if not Mad Max more generally) was most likely inspired by, look up the Stuart Highway, between Darwin and Port Augusta. It's a road that goes right through the center of the country.
Thanks Sean. Always grand to hear your unbiased reviews. Having heard lots of criticism aimed at the effects, I am eager to learn more about the story telling. Critics tend to focus on irrelevant factors, which corrupts the appeal of the film.
I had a good time with this one. Not near the adrenaline rush of Fury Road but Alyla Browne and Anya Taylor Joy did great as Furiosa but Chris Hemsworth was the show stealer for me! I did feel some pacing issues but overall it was an enjoyable return to the wasteland. Great review!
Pity that it kinda flopped extra hard (truth is, even Fury Road wasn’t THAT big a hit).. don’t think Miller is going to get to do another of these…especially since he’s now had back to back flops..he blew $60 million on that weird Tilda Swinton/Idris Elba 3000 years of Longing movie that bombed HORRIBLY two years ago (like, $9 million worldwide! Oof!)
To me, the movie was very underwhelming compared to Fury Road. For one thing, what I like about Mad Max movies is that he's never the center of the movie. He STUMBLES into literally much more interesting characters and situations than him. He meets memorable characters, villains and heroes and people in between and I thought with Furiosa having a movie based on her, it'd be... more. Her being silent for most of the movie was a choice I didn't agree with. But I didn't want her to be a chatterbox either, but some more dialogue would ahve been nice, just to hear her thoughts... But eh. What I have the most trouble with is how much CGI is in this one. Fury Road did have CGI yes but it was background or used to do the zoom ins or the chase scenes... There is SO MUCH CGI! A lot of it looks faker than you would expect and I didn't see as much practical effects with the chase scenes as we saw in Fury Road and coming from seeing Fall Guy like a week before? I was HIGHLY disappointed. I guess it's an okay movie, but Fury Road was 100% better to me...
I really wanted to love this movie, and there were a lot of great things in it - Anya and Chris's performances, the costumes, the cinematography and especially the War Rig fight - but I unfortunately couldn't connect to the structure. There was too much setup, most of the payoff was completely offscreen and the lack of a final fight in favor of just talking really confused me. At least the Guitar Guy cameo was appreciated.
How can a movie so loud simultaneously be so boring. The stuff with the young Furiosa drags on far too long and should have been drastically shortened. Chris Hemsworth is the worst villain of the series and comes across as a post apocalyptic Jack Sparrow and not the unique character we have come to expect. Loud is far too kind a description. It was deafening and several times I had to plug my ears. I left the theatre with a splitting headache. What distinguishes the other films is that there is clear objective and had some degree of hope at the end, but in Furiosa I had no idea what was going on as they jump from one action set piece to another. The series has never been strong on plot or stories and it's the characters that keep us invested, and we care about them. I loved Charlize Theron in Fury Road and though she is given very little dialogue and we know virtually nothing about her we sense her desperation to return to the "green place". Her eyes convey so much emotions that any expository dialogue would feel unnecessary. The premise is very simple. In Furiosa I couldn't care less about any of the characters. Being a prequel we know that nothing would happen to her so there's no real drama very. Bringing back characters from Fury Road was a huge mistake and made me miss the first film all the more. To say this was disappointing is an understatement. I don't see many movies anymore, and fewer that I genuinely look forward to. This should have had no connection with Fury Road and gone off in its own direction. I frankly didn't need to know how she lost her arm (made her own mechanical replacement), why she smeared grease on her forehead, or see what the green place looked like. I hope this the last of the Mad Max franchise, but I doubt it. I'm done. Nothing will equal what has come before. Many single out Beyond Thunderdome as being the worst but I think Furiosa deserves that place. Personally I love Beyond Thunderdome and will always defend it. Despite it's slight flaws it's a lot more fun than Furiosa.

Still baffles me that Miller made movies like this and Babe and Happy Feet.... How?
He’s varied

Thats a talented director. When you can do entirely different genres and make it good.

What a glorious review

Well, glad you're feeling better, dude.

I've fallen asleep during loud movies with no problem. Mainly due to exhaustion.
I fell asleep through Fury Road so I passed on this.
The fact that this movie flopped means that Miller will never be allowed to direct another film in Hollywood ever again.
Welcome back, sir! I'm glad you're mending. ❤
I wonder why it isn't doing so well in theaters?

Repeating yourself on the point of how loud the movie is, huh?
1:35 I slept for 4 hours last night and ate a lot. So I slept during the film.
Sad the movie underperformed. Really loved the movie and made me start wanting to go back to watch stuff in cinemas again.

I liked it too, but wondered if it might have been better as a 4-part Miniseries on (say) Netflix. It certainly seemed to be structured that way.
