Agree, a character that can simply wipe people’s memory, turn baby into dove, teleport, knows everyone’s schedule, know what they liked, last for years without eating or drinking, able to go through walls, I think the main character is simply god

Originally you weren’t supposed to be able to date Emily at all, that’s probabaly just left in by CA because 1. It would be too hard to remove for too little effect, or 2. He forgot and now people hate Clint so he decided he wouldn’t change it. If the community didn’t vote to be able to date Emily it’s possible we would have seen an actual relationship be built.

I hate his shoes line though. So self pitying. Nobody comments on my shoes irl, and I'm not out here like "oh, poor me, nobody looked at my shoes". Maybe go up to someone and say "Hey, look at my new shoes!". He could even ask the farmer, and you could have a variety of options, from "Wow, those shoes are so cool", to "Wow, I didn't know you were colour blind".
A lot of things in this world show you our human nature. We all need to work on being more understanding and welcoming, honestly. it’s just a game but the amount of hate people have for a fake character is weird. I saw this when i was in King of The Hill groups. The majority always picks one character to out and hate on. Everyone hated on Peggy. To the point I left the group because people argued with me WHY it was okay to write paragraph lengths over why they profusely HATE a character. And they wished harm/evil things ON A CHARACTER. Humans are nuts bro.

The player is arguably creepier than clint, depending on how you play. From digging through peoples trash, to looking them up online, knowing all their secrets and trying to poison the town with shorts or pufferfiah at the Luau
Ok but it annoys me that everyone says he’s a stalker because of finding him in the bushes but ignores that he says he was trying to ask her out but got scared and hid when he heard her coming to the door and is now waiting until the coast is clear. That’s not stalking it’s just being a coward.

I just feel bad for the guy, he's clearly lonely and needs someone in his life, but he can't, because he doesn't know the ways in which he can go around that. Also bare in mind that Emily was never supposed to be a marriage candidate, She was added because of a Twitter poll. (That doesn't validate everything he does, but that gives a bit more context) I personally think he would be a really nice person if given a friend, but that's the part he struggles with - finding the friend.

the problem is, he is in love with the idea of emily, not her. he has an image in his head of who emily is, but has never talked to her, and aside from some interactions with her in the bar, he doesnt really has much of a reason to be that in love with her.
The first time I played Stardew Valley I honestly did not think Clint was creepy and that’s coming from a woman, I just saw him as an anxious man who was scared to approach women in general based off of his dialogue and scenes, and I even made it a point to swing by his place to talk to him or gift him something because he is alone most of the time, mainly being a friend for him because he needed one, so imagine my shock when I saw that people disliked Clint. Sure people can argue him hiding in the bushes is creepy but like if you took the time to let the scene play out, he got too scared to ask Emily out and only hid when he heard her coming, and you even get to play as wingman for him and try to encourage him. CA really didn’t do him any favors by not removing his dialogue if the Player/Farmer does go for Emily when she and Shane were added as marriage candidates. Honestly there’s so many character development that ends up getting lost the further you progress the game, but to be fair this game was a heavily ambitious project for just one person at the time, and I don’t mind downloading mods to give me what I want and more in case those updates never do come. At the end of the day I still do not find him creepy even now after hearing everyone’s opinions, though it was certainly interesting to hear the perspectives of other people TLTR: Clint got screwed over by CA in a way, give my boy a break

I stopped talking to Emily after her 8-heart event because I was married to somebody else. I even started giving her hated gifts, I stopped now cuz I realise I'll need her to be at 8 hearts for perfection.
He absolutely has the Nice Guy attitude, whenever the Clothing Therapy scene plays out, straight up just goes "I guess I'll leave...congrats, Farmer..." You can physically HEAR the man starting up Linkin Park in his head at that moment
It would be cool if the farmer could help Clint gain confidence in heart events and we be given the choice of either marrying emily or setting her up with clint.
After you get to high hearts with Emily, Emily has a dialogue talking about how Clint doesn’t talk to her anymore. He sees a ‘threat’ to their nonexistent relationship, and just dips. Like the only reason he wants to be close to Emily is to pursue her, to try to date her, to possess her. Hell, in Emily’s 8 heart event (only eight!! You and Emily aren’t even dating yet???!) he walks in on you and Emily hugging and says ‘oh.. congratulations’ to YOU. Just YOU. NOT EMILY. Like, in his eyes we ‘won’, we ‘got’ the girl. WHAT THE HELL. He’s got some issues to work through, to say the least. He doesn’t need a romance, he needs therapy and friends. Platonic relationships can bring happiness as well, but he just doesn’t even consider being friends with Emily just to be friends with her. It’s only in hopes of pursuing a romantic connection down the line. If you like someone enough to want to ask them out, you should probably enjoy being around them in general. Him abandoning his ‘friendship’ with Emily after she’s seen to be ‘taken’ just seems gross, like he didn’t like her as a person, more as an object to pin all his affection and hopes to. Sorry for the essay. Tldr: Clint is gross and there are plenty of reasons to dislike him, and not many reasons to like him. He doesn’t really have much going for him.
@@kolobur298 I can understand not wanting to talk to people, as I also have social anxiety (once I took a 50% on a technical semester exam because I felt awkward asking my teacher how to do something basic), but that still doesn’t excuse this dialogue from Emily (said when she’s at 8 hearts in fall). “I think Clint's mad at me. He never looks at me anymore... I always thought we were friends.” She valued what she saw as a friendship, and he gave that up because he didn’t see her as anything more than an object of desire or affection. Once he thought that he didn’t have a chance of dating her, he entirely gave up on pursuing any kind of relationship with her, platonic or otherwise. I don’t think Clint’s actions can be excused by social anxiety or anything other than him being.. well, somewhat gross. The main issue isn’t that he ‘never makes a move’, it’s that he gives up on platonic friendship after she’s seen to be ‘taken’ in a romantic relationship, which are entirely different areas. Harvey I would say is a better representation of someone who is anxious and deals with it in a healthy way, as he is nervous about asking Maru to dance, yet actually does it. He doesn’t give up on being friends and coworkers with Maru if you and Maru start dating, because he values her for being herself. Clint values Emily as an object of affection, and not as her own person, is how I see it.

This is similar with the fact that other candidate does distancing with their crush like Harley and Alex start avoiding each other so player don't have to be bother the fact that this two used to be having crush with each other. That's where Emily mention Clint ignored her came. It's to implement that farmer don't have to care about Clint relationship with Emily just like how Maru said Harvey not her type to clarify that she didn't have feeling with Harvey so farmer don't have to be bothered by it. What differentiates them and Clint is, he not a candidate. He didn't have crush on farmer so his story will stay the same while other start crushing on you. You guys said 8 heart was "friend", it actually not. All candidate does blushing and hiting on farmer at 8 heart that I have to stop talking with them. It implied that at 8 heart, ALL candidate having a CRUSH on farmer and start distancing or forgetting their past crush. So, one way to break his whole character progression which is involved Emily was by make him stop having connection with Emily at all. That "congratulation, you won" might word badly but it to said that from this moment, his character progression with Emily has end. Plus, players are the one who vote Emily to won as candidate which end Clint whole story and character progression. So technically...we won I guess.
Imo Clint can’t help but feel hurt and sad if he thinks his crush choose someone else. It’s completely reason to avoid someone if they make you feel sad. I blocked my partner after we broke up, it helped me get over it, I couldn’t stand looking at them, despite being very close friends prior to the relationship. Harvey asks Maru to dance but I don’t think he actually had a crush on her, more that he wanted to dance with someone and Maru was just the most familiar.

But he and Emily were never dating, and all Emily knows is that her friend Clint is likely mad at her, because he doesn’t want to talk or look at her anymore. His lack of communication is an issue, as Emily will never know what’s wrong, and why Clint just- gave up on their friendship. He never says anything to even hint to Emily that he likes her romantically, then gets mad and sad that she ‘chose’ someone else. You don’t even have to be dating her when she mentions that Clint gave up on her friendship. You could be married to someone else, and Clint would just give up.
Before i knew about his weird actions it broke my heart when he was talking about how he was lonely and shy. Then when he asked how he could be a ladies man like me, i answered "just be yourself!", he said "i try but it doesnt work" :(.... I felt that bro 😭😭
I don't think the hatred is warranted. He's a lonely blacksmith who can't find the courage to say the words he wants to say. He isn't a stalker, he's terrified of rejection and remaining alone forever. I wish the player could help him out.
Yeah this is how I view him as well. There are some things he does which I do think are wierd, but by and large I don't think he's a malicious or bad person by any means, just complacent and shy.
I mean yeah Clint does appear to be on the older side but just judging off of appearance and demeanor, Emily is the oldest of the bachelorettes that if I had to guess is in her late twenties or early thirties while I don't imagine Clint to be any older then mid to late thirties.

He's also crushing on a woman who doesn't exist. He never talks to her, so he's just built her up in his head to be his ideal based on what he wants. And since I've unfortunately had experience with guys like that in the past (not toward me but toward friends), his character just grosses me out. I downloaded a mod this go-around that changes his dialogue, as I got tired of avoiding interacting with him. Edit: woo, some men in the comments outing themselves by lashing out with personal attacks against a total stranger who dated criticize a fictional character. Well, maybe next time I'll find a mod that erases Clint altogether. In honour of their FEELINGS about the way I play a game I bought and paid for and that they'll never see anyway.

Another fact is that sometimes when he calls through the house phone, he'll say something along the lines of "I never realized how beautiful your voice was" or something like that- then will say "uh- bye" and hang up-
if you’re playing as a girl farmer and go to the movies with clint, he acts really weird during the movie and tries to make moves on you. it’s so uncomfortable. and during emily’s 8 heart cutscene, clint walks into a room where you and emily are chatting and says “congrats farmer”. when you speak to emily after, emily gains a new line of dialogue where she says clint stopped talking to her. he only sees emily as a prize and not a person.

@@kuroyami9757 It implies that he sees your character getting close to Emily, even if it's not in a romantic way, as you "winning" her. As though it was a competition with her as the end goal. Dialogue suggests that she saw him as a friend, he saw her romantic interest as something he wanted to obtain, and has no interest in her beyond that. I get being awkward, but it really feels like he doesn't really care about her as a person, just as an object of attraction.
@@LaydiNite Or...he was distancing himself from any feelings regarding his end, because to him, he felt rejected, the result of introversion and no experience. Given his behavior, and how much of a coward he is, it makes more sense for this "winning" thing to be his way of emotionally isolating himself from the situation. He's pessimistically believing that his chances are over, and to an inexperienced person, that could generate the same feelings as rejection. I know if _I_ saw the girl I liked getting closer with another guy, with my relationship with them at a standstill, I would absolutely hurt, psychologically, albeit jumping to conclusions, it is the same emotional response as getting cucked. It's hard to explain, but man does it hurt.

I always kind of related with Clint. Doesn't get out much, a nervous wreck when it came to talking to my crush. Lonely. The stalking and some dialog options definitely are a bit sus, but some dudes are just scared when it comes to love like this

It's sad because I have a friend that is like this. They want some more friends and possibly a relationship, but doesn't know how to go about it, and sometimes they discredit that I'm a friend to them to help them out when in need of certain help. They keep to the pathway that makes them feel secure, yet it doesn't get them to the point where they want to be. Therapy would help in such situations, but only if they're willing to listen to you and break out of their cycle of depression.

Only has one comment, which I will argue with. I think Clint just doesn't wanna interrupt her working, for the first one. For the second one, well... that's not what the comment meant. He didn't think he would never be able to talk to Emily again, he probably got nervous by Caroline joining in and froze... you know, fight flight or freeze? Those 3 very basic responses to fear/nervousness? And for the age thing... my guy, none of the characters have confirmed ages. Emily canonically makes food for Haley, so she's probably older than Haley, and therefore the rest of the marriage candidates. And the only thing hinting at clint's age is being "too old to do anything exciting". Which, considering the lack of things in the town, could be said for anyone who isn't jas and vincent(and even if there were things like clubs and all that, those things are typically viewed as for the mid 20s, so he could be like... 34)
I mean it's even pretty much a thing that Clint and Emily have quite the age gap as well and after marrying her he not only continues but also says stuff like "you won her first, congrats" as if she's a treasure to be won and earned instead of a real woman with real feelings :x
I low key feel for Clint 😂. I used to be THAT guy, everyday full of anxiety, self pity, and self loathing. I did a lot of things back then that would be considered "creepy" (not harassment or anything like that). Idk, I didn't know back then they felt creeped out. When I found out about how they were creeped out by me, it fked me up. Those were dark fkin times for me 😂. It's all good now though, thank god for friends who tell you how it is and don't immediately just label you as a creeper 😂. I got told that I was just awkward and had low self esteem which is true and is still kinda true😂
I'd like it if you could kind of play matchmaker between Clint and Emily. I always feel sorry for Clint, and Emily appears somewhat cheerfully oblivious to his feelings towards her.
I think that would be amazing!! My siblings and I really like Clint and want him to be happy, to the point where my sister was screaming "NOOOOOOOO!!!! I'M SORRY!!!!" When she got the eight heart event for Emily. She was so sad that she hurt Clint's feelings.

Emily wasn't originally a marriage candidate either, same with Shane. I think you've got a lonely, depressed man stuck in a small town with nothing special in life or his future, but when he goes to drink away his blues there's a vivacious barmaid always greeting you with a sunny smile & her bubbly, quirky personality. Combined with the fact that she's the only older single woman in town, yeah, I can see why he'd fall for her, even if there's still a bit of an age gap. That age gap could partially be why he's so hesitant to pursue her? Or maybe he'd rather have just the dream to keep him going rather than risk shattering it by doing something.

When i use mods i usually tend to avoid mods that change the personality of the characters but... i think Clint is an exception. I installed a mod called "Happy Clint". Now his dialogue is "I spend most of the time working inside my house. What can i say? I really love my job! It keeps me going".
Then there's also the fact that Emily is like at most 30 years old while Clint, who is 40+, creepily stalks her and acts so childish with his "gifts" (like when he asks you to find your own amethyst, gift her the amethyst and say its a gift from Clint)

the implied age gap is what it is for me. the parents are similar in age and clint similar to them, while the bachelors and bachelorettes are younger. its just weird to me. imagine someone the same age as your parents having a crush on your friend who is your age
Clint is confirmed to be late 30s - early 40s. I always see Emily being late 20s, around the same range as Leah or Elliot. Clint's behavior is what weirds me out the most. The age gap isn't that bad since they're both grown adults.

The player is arguably creepier than clint, depending on how you play. From digging through peoples trash, to looking them up online, knowing all their secrets and trying to poison the town with shorts or pufferfiah at the Luau

There's a thing called first love and crush.
The first time I played Stardew Valley I honestly did not think Clint was creepy and that’s coming from a woman, I just saw him as an anxious man who was scared to approach women in general based off of his dialogue and scenes, and I even made it a point to swing by his place to talk to him or gift him something because he is alone most of the time, mainly being a friend for him because he needed one, so imagine my shock when I saw that people disliked Clint.
Sure people can argue him hiding in the bushes is creepy but like if you took the time to let the scene play out, he got too scared to ask Emily out and only hid when he heard her coming, and you even get to play as wingman for him and try to encourage him. CA really didn’t do him any favors by not removing his dialogue if the Player/Farmer does go for Emily when she and Shane were added as marriage candidates.
Honestly there’s so many character development that ends up getting lost the further you progress the game, but to be fair this game was a heavily ambitious project for just one person at the time, and I don’t mind downloading mods to give me what I want and more in case those updates never do come. At the end of the day I still do not find him creepy even now after hearing everyone’s opinions, though it was certainly interesting to hear the perspectives of other people

After you get to high hearts with Emily, Emily has a dialogue talking about how Clint doesn’t talk to her anymore. He sees a ‘threat’ to their nonexistent relationship, and just dips. Like the only reason he wants to be close to Emily is to pursue her, to try to date her, to possess her.
Hell, in Emily’s 8 heart event (only eight!! You and Emily aren’t even dating yet???!) he walks in on you and Emily hugging and says ‘oh.. congratulations’ to YOU. Just YOU. NOT EMILY. Like, in his eyes we ‘won’, we ‘got’ the girl. WHAT THE HELL.
He’s got some issues to work through, to say the least. He doesn’t need a romance, he needs therapy and friends. Platonic relationships can bring happiness as well, but he just doesn’t even consider being friends with Emily just to be friends with her. It’s only in hopes of pursuing a romantic connection down the line.
If you like someone enough to want to ask them out, you should probably enjoy being around them in general. Him abandoning his ‘friendship’ with Emily after she’s seen to be ‘taken’ just seems gross, like he didn’t like her as a person, more as an object to pin all his affection and hopes to.
Sorry for the essay.
Tldr: Clint is gross and there are plenty of reasons to dislike him, and not many reasons to like him. He doesn’t really have much going for him.
@@kolobur298 I can understand not wanting to talk to people, as I also have social anxiety (once I took a 50% on a technical semester exam because I felt awkward asking my teacher how to do something basic), but that still doesn’t excuse this dialogue from Emily (said when she’s at 8 hearts in fall). “I think Clint's mad at me. He never looks at me anymore... I always thought we were friends.” She valued what she saw as a friendship, and he gave that up because he didn’t see her as anything more than an object of desire or affection. Once he thought that he didn’t have a chance of dating her, he entirely gave up on pursuing any kind of relationship with her, platonic or otherwise.
I don’t think Clint’s actions can be excused by social anxiety or anything other than him being.. well, somewhat gross. The main issue isn’t that he ‘never makes a move’, it’s that he gives up on platonic friendship after she’s seen to be ‘taken’ in a romantic relationship, which are entirely different areas.
Harvey I would say is a better representation of someone who is anxious and deals with it in a healthy way, as he is nervous about asking Maru to dance, yet actually does it. He doesn’t give up on being friends and coworkers with Maru if you and Maru start dating, because he values her for being herself. Clint values Emily as an object of affection, and not as her own person, is how I see it.

From game perspective, it's a way for CA to break Clint progression that linked with Emily after she become candidate. I would said, Emily won the vote instead Sandy was a mistake. It's for player who choose Emily didn't have to bother with Clint who his whole progression was low self esteem guy confessed to his crush. This is similar with the fact that other candidate does distancing with their crush like Harley and Alex start avoiding each other so player don't have to be bother the fact that this two used to be having crush with each other. That's where Emily mention Clint ignored her came. It's to implement that farmer don't have to care about Clint relationship with Emily just like how Maru said Harvey not her type to clarify that she didn't have feeling with Harvey so farmer don't have to be bothered by it. What differentiates them and Clint is, he not a candidate. He didn't have crush on farmer so his story will stay the same while other start crushing on you. You guys said 8 heart was "friend", it actually not. All candidate does blushing and hiting on farmer at 8 heart that I have to stop talking with them. It implied that at 8 heart, ALL candidate having a CRUSH on farmer and start distancing or forgetting their past crush. So, one way to break his whole character progression which is involved Emily was by make him stop having connection with Emily at all.
That "congratulation, you won" might word badly but it to said that from this moment, his character progression with Emily has end. Plus, players are the one who vote Emily to won as candidate which end Clint whole story and character progression. So technically...we won I guess.
Imo Clint can’t help but feel hurt and sad if he thinks his crush choose someone else. It’s completely reason to avoid someone if they make you feel sad. I blocked my partner after we broke up, it helped me get over it, I couldn’t stand looking at them, despite being very close friends prior to the relationship.
Harvey asks Maru to dance but I don’t think he actually had a crush on her, more that he wanted to dance with someone and Maru was just the most familiar.

He never says anything to even hint to Emily that he likes her romantically, then gets mad and sad that she ‘chose’ someone else. You don’t even have to be dating her when she mentions that Clint gave up on her friendship. You could be married to someone else, and Clint would just give up.

Yeah this is how I view him as well. There are some things he does which I do think are wierd, but by and large I don't think he's a malicious or bad person by any means, just complacent and shy.

if you’re playing as a girl farmer and go to the movies with clint, he acts really weird during the movie and tries to make moves on you. it’s so uncomfortable. and during emily’s 8 heart cutscene, clint walks into a room where you and emily are chatting and says “congrats farmer”. when you speak to emily after, emily gains a new line of dialogue where she says clint stopped talking to her. he only sees emily as a prize and not a person.

Dialogue suggests that she saw him as a friend, he saw her romantic interest as something he wanted to obtain, and has no interest in her beyond that. I get being awkward, but it really feels like he doesn't really care about her as a person, just as an object of attraction.

Given his behavior, and how much of a coward he is, it makes more sense for this "winning" thing to be his way of emotionally isolating himself from the situation. He's pessimistically believing that his chances are over, and to an inexperienced person, that could generate the same feelings as rejection. I know if _I_ saw the girl I liked getting closer with another guy, with my relationship with them at a standstill, I would absolutely hurt, psychologically, albeit jumping to conclusions, it is the same emotional response as getting cucked. It's hard to explain, but man does it hurt.

It's sad because I have a friend that is like this. They want some more friends and possibly a relationship, but doesn't know how to go about it, and sometimes they discredit that I'm a friend to them to help them out when in need of certain help. They keep to the pathway that makes them feel secure, yet it doesn't get them to the point where they want to be. Therapy would help in such situations, but only if they're willing to listen to you and break out of their cycle of depression.

And for the age thing... my guy, none of the characters have confirmed ages. Emily canonically makes food for Haley, so she's probably older than Haley, and therefore the rest of the marriage candidates. And the only thing hinting at clint's age is being "too old to do anything exciting". Which, considering the lack of things in the town, could be said for anyone who isn't jas and vincent(and even if there were things like clubs and all that, those things are typically viewed as for the mid 20s, so he could be like... 34)
I mean it's even pretty much a thing that Clint and Emily have quite the age gap as well and after marrying her he not only continues but also says stuff like "you won her first, congrats" as if she's a treasure to be won and earned instead of a real woman with real feelings :x
I low key feel for Clint 😂. I used to be THAT guy, everyday full of anxiety, self pity, and self loathing. I did a lot of things back then that would be considered "creepy" (not harassment or anything like that). Idk, I didn't know back then they felt creeped out. When I found out about how they were creeped out by me, it fked me up. Those were dark fkin times for me 😂. It's all good now though, thank god for friends who tell you how it is and don't immediately just label you as a creeper 😂. I got told that I was just awkward and had low self esteem which is true and is still kinda true😂

I think you've got a lonely, depressed man stuck in a small town with nothing special in life or his future, but when he goes to drink away his blues there's a vivacious barmaid always greeting you with a sunny smile & her bubbly, quirky personality. Combined with the fact that she's the only older single woman in town, yeah, I can see why he'd fall for her, even if there's still a bit of an age gap. That age gap could partially be why he's so hesitant to pursue her? Or maybe he'd rather have just the dream to keep him going rather than risk shattering it by doing something.

Not because I’m crazy about him as a character but because I think it would be an interesting story arch about him growing more confident.
