- Women Hold Up the Sky tells the story of how women activists affected by mining and other forms of large-scale extractives in South Africa, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are deeply engaged in resistance and an active struggle to take back control of their land, their rights, their bodies and their lives.
Journeying between these three countries, this documentary reveals the experiences and activism of women in three African countries but tells a much bigger story of the ongoing exploitation of natural resources and marginalisation of poor communities, particularly women.

So thrilled to see the film on UA-cam. We did a screening with women activists in my organisation, and everyone in the group was very inspired by the stories in the film and related to the struggles/resistance shown here. Well done to the filming team and WoMin!
it hit me quite hard, when the community members all started singing together about the refinery at 11:28. I've never seen that kind of thing before. it's clear that the issue has all scarred their lives deeply. it is both fascinating and heartbreaking, the way they used a song about the topic as a way to process their suffering, and cope.
great documentary. thank you to all that made it. it was very eye-opening. they'll be shut again as I get complacent once again, but at least I'll be less ignorant this time. and each time after this.
