I have the X-H1 and can't say it's really been such a great problem for me. Once in a while it'll refuse to focus, but I found that reducing the size of the auto focus square solved that and/or pushing the camera forward slightly. It just motivates me to know the camera better, so I don't have those stressful moments and I'm sorry, but no matter how good the auto focus is on a Sony, I can't stand their colours! I do think it's a shame Fuji have moved production to China though. There has definitely been issues with build quality that were never there with the Japanese produced cameras.

I think you really summed it up best when you pointed out the idea that Fuji is focusing on the creator crowd instead of the prosumer photographer that made them who they are today. Unfortunately the needs of the users they are trying to attract today may not be the type that can sustain them long term. It's a shame, but it appears to be their new reality.
My recent experience with upgrading was not very positive. My 8 year old Fuji X-T20 and X-t3 are much more reliable in my experience. Their focus the 'influencer' crowd instead of sticking to their roots may eventually bring an end to a historically great camera line. In my case, I wound up returning my X-T5 and purchased an A7Cii. So far the switch has been positive for me with very few exceptions.

Oh is there something wrong with the X-T5? How is it worse than the older bodies exactly? I thought it's supposed to be their return to form X-T body after making the X-T4 bulky and, for whatever reason, video-centric/more of a hybrid camera.
The X-T50 also seems like a 'photography first' camera.
Honestly compared to the X-T4/X-E4/X-S10 Fuji era of minimalism and content creation focus, they seem to be on the right track these days.

    Hello,
I understand that a professional, who has to deliver results to clients or produce content, might struggle to work with peace of mind and prefer to switch to another brand. However, in my opinion, it’s hard to find another brand offering cameras that are as pleasant and discreet.
I recommend considering the range of f/2 lenses, particularly the 16 mm (2.8), 23 mm, 35 mm, and 50 mm. With these lenses, your friend’s travel bag would be incredibly light, and the results would be excellent. Another interesting option could be the Sigma 18-50 mm f/2.8 zoom lens, which is very lightweight.
For new Fuji users who don’t need 40 megapixels, the X-T4 or even the X-T3 could be more than enough. In my opinion, these models would meet the needs of 95% of users.

One of the fea things that make me love my X-Pro2 so much (which surprisingly isn't something that happened on any of my otehr Fujifilm cameras) is that the custom JPEG recipes profiles (that you can get from like Fuji X Weekly, or straight up make yourself) are applied to the RAW files when I import them in Capture One.
I do not remember my X-T2 or my X-H1 doing that, in fact all the photos I imported from those cameras always looked like a standard Provia film sim, even if I was shooting black and white.
It might not sound like much, but the fact taht the X-Pro2 keeps the custom JPEG color profile and everything to the RAW image that I import (for some reason, I have no idea why it does this but I'm not complaining !) means that I can shoot my camera like I was shooting JPEG, keeping allthe color grading that happens in camera, keeping the black and white tones I selected, keeping the custom film recipes I entered in the custom profiles, but I can also do adjustments if I want to, with the full flexibility of a RAW file. Previously, I would have loved to do that, but being limited to JPEGs, I would have had to content myself with the flexibility of 8bit JPEGs (which I'm not willing to do at all).
This single handedly changed the way I take photos with that camera and I can say with confidence that I'm never selling that old little guy

I shoot with my Fujifilm X-T5 and it has the latest firmware (v 4.10 as of Dec 2024). It has never failed me technically - if I did missed a focus, it was because of user error. I shoot commercial projects, ranging from portraits, food, products, interiors and lately, sports (padel tennis and that one has a lot of fast and sudden movements). AF-C in both video and photos. The only time that it goes crazy is when there are multiple faces in the frame. But focus wise, never had an issue. It also never shut down randomly. I guess the problem with focus is not consistent among users - could be user error or just a plain bad copy, which then could be a question of their process of quality checking in production.

Yup, I totally agree. I have been a Fuji fanboy for years. I’ve had most of the x-e and x-t and x100 cameras, and loved them, BUT, I think they really have left the serious photographers behind. They are in knee deep to the vloggers and the snapshot folks. I love to shoot wildlife, and have struggled for years, the autofocus sucks, and I don’t think they care. The x-t5 was a huge disappointment to me. Waited for the final firmware update, which did nothing, and sold the whole lot. I bought a Sony A7iv, and my god what a difference….it doesn’t miss. I kept my x100vi and an old x-e3 for things that don’t matter, or move, but when I need it to focus I reach for the Sony. I hope Fuji quits feeding the tic-tock crowd and puts their efforts into a top notch, focusing monster, photographers camera. I will gladly pay more if they do. This is not trashing Fuji for its past, but its future is not in my future. I am sad about this.

I use Fujifilm professionally for photo and video. I would say it makes more sense to use them for video, as you don't have to rely on the AF (depending on what you shoot, of course) and you get great colours from the get go. As a company, Fujifilm are also moving towards making big plays in the video space... unfortunately, photographers are being left out in the cold. And yes, the lens lineup needs a big shakeup.

  • @ryanclouse299

I love shooting jpeg as a hobbyist. The jpegs from fuji are enough for me when shooting for fun, but if it is more "important" I'll shoot raw. I think the more modern fujis are not to my taste as having more megapixels to me is just more data to store, as well as focus more on video and less reliable AF from reports. For me 16/24 mpx is the perfect medium for being able to have a slight cropping and the image still being sharp enough. My two favorite Fujifilm cameras are the x-e2 and the x-h1 (which I didn't have much issue with AF gladly). My x-e2 practically has a ttartisan 25mm f2 glued to it and that has been fun.
PS. No hard feelings bro. I don't personally care about who uses what gear it's about the artist behind the camera that matters. Just use the gear that you enjoy and of course is reliable. I love my canon P, and I vibe with the shutter dial. I just wished there were more digital cameras with it besides Fujifilm. The ZF is probably really fun with adapted lenses, though.

Just the build quality from my X100S to the X100VI has been a significant disappointment. I'm keeping my X-T2, and X100S. I might get rid of the X100VI, and I already returned an X-H2s and 100-400 lens because they couldn't AF. Honestly for casual shooting I'm less frustrated with my old Lumix GX8, at least when the Lumix indicates a shot is in focus, it is.

    Um, Sorry Gerard...
As someone who has been shooting since the K-1000 has been in vogue as a new camera, I find these videos to be fascinating for one thing: How did professionals and high end amateurs produce such stunning images when the did not have 1/500th of the bells and whistles of the newer cameras? It was because they knew their craft and knew their cameras intimately. I contend that it is easy to get lazy and let the camera do everything for you with the new cameras and when that does not happen, you blame the camera instead of your skill and photographic ability. I own an X-H1 and don't rely completely on the camera for things such as auto focus, often shoot manual lenses. If you actually know your photography theory and can apply it, it doesn't matter what camera you have. Just own a solidly made body and good lenses, and be an artist who knows how to use their brushes.

    • @DFitzell

I find these comments fascinating 😅 you wouldn’t really buy a self driving car and then just drive it around manually because the new firmware updates made it bump into things and just accept that’s what you have to do now because that’s how they did it in the old days 😅 I think Fuji have really messed up with the AF updates on these cameras and I don’t think shooting in manual is the answer. They sold a product with all these AF features and then made it worse and half the internet end up arguing and saying it’s user error. I’ve owned an XT3, XE1 and an XT5 and the XT5 is the most unreliable for its AF, the XE1 was slow, but reliable!

It’s also when you buy a camera for the same amount of money to another camera brand, you’ll expect simular performance.
So saying I’ll be a better photographer from just learning my craft and using MF lenses is a bit extreme don’t you think?
Their is also painters just using procreate over a paint brush, so what you just commented is very subjective

@@TheParadoxDestroyerI actually think my XT3 performed better than my XT5. It tracked subjects better and I used to get a higher hit rate and that’s using zone or single point AF-C. I’m still able to get good pictures with the XT5 using zone or single point but the subject detection modes aren’t reliable and I’ve tried all the settings, trust me 😅 I do photograph wildlife and pets (often running at me) so I would say I am demanding of the AF system and maybe Sony is a better fit for my use case but I do love the size, affordability, ergonomics and colours from the Fuji’s so I’ll keep hoping it gets better for now.

Even though my disconnect was with the sensor, Auto focus was just fine with all of them for my use. I wish now I had kept my XT-2 simply for OOC JPEGs and recipe experiments. I will agree with your sentiment about the charm. It’s real. But if it’s performance you need with the aesthetics, Nikon nailed it with the ZF. I got influenced and bought one a several weeks ago. Professional photography has been around for decades with cameras far less performant than the Fuji X series. What I'd like to see from Fuji in 2025 is less of a focus on optically clinical lenses and bring back some more character. I like Viltrox and own the 75mm f1.2, but their lenses render very sharp and flat. New camera bodies aren't really that exciting anymore but I do understand why we all get wrapped up in switching and changing all the time - like it will somehow develop our practice.

Always tough to decide. May I recommend giving an a6700 a try? It's the first (possibly only) Sony mirrorless that I think has excellent colours -- I'm hoping the others will follow. The autofocus and sharpness is incredible, especially with Viltrox Pro or Sigma lenses. Small and light with APSC lenses. I think it's a bit of an unsung hero because so many people write-off anything that isn't full frame. Fujifilm users are some of the most touchy people. Stop defending a product that is lacking and maybe they will do something to improve. Fujifilm costs as much as a full frame camera which is better in every way. The Fuji AF and build quality, low light ability and IQ is all subpar, so why get a Fujifilm if they're not delivering? Say it how it is, I have been a long time Fuji user but once they started slacking behind other brands I switched systems to something better. The only benefit a Fuji has nowadays compared to full frame is size which is slowly not being an advantage either because Sony produce a small A7C II which is the same size (maybe even smaller) than an XT5 which can do everything better apart from silly film sims which don't even matter if you shoot RAW as most of us do. So please, wind your head's in.

I kinda love and hate that all major camera brands are Japanese. On one hand you know they'll have a high build quality, but on the other hand Japanese corps are notorious for not listening to their communities and taking a long time to make needed changes. I think the issues you're having with Fujifilm would be similar in other brands, so no matter where you go there will always be annoying issues. I reckon just stick with what you've got and hope that change comes.
