My Grandfather retired from the C&O (CSX now) and lived in North Vernon. I spent many hours in the depot dispatchers office watching trains while he visited his friends. Back then, there was a "Cross Watchmans "shack next to the signal. I remember "Benny the cross watchman" going out to change the signal. Sometimes I got to help because Benny liked me and he and Grandpa were good friends. If you had panned east past the depot, there would have been another shack for the other crossing. They are both preserved now with a restored B&O caboose west of the crossing. Norht Vernon was a "Railroad Town". In its heyday, no less than 99 trains would pass through in 24 hours. Madison Railroad was the first railroad west of the Allegheny Mountains and up until the late 80's was the steepest incline in regular use in the U.S. It started as a "Cog Railway".
I saw 2 things today that I never heard of in my 64+ years, even though I've been a railfan since I was a kid! Never saw or even heard of that type of signal, too bad it's history now, but I understand why. Never - EVER - heard of or saw an OWLS diamond before, either! See that, Brian? Not only are your videos entertaining, they're informative and educational! I've only been watching your videos for about a year now, but every day I look to see what's new on the JawTooth Channel, and it's always better than pretty much anything on cable TV. Again, Brian, thank you so much for your time and efforts bringing us the BEST in homemade railroad video! In the words of my favorite Star Trek character, may you live long and prosper. 🖖
I second his comment! Until I found your channel, I didn’t know that Railfan was a noun-had never heard of people who loved trains as much as I did. I have learned so much from your videos. Than you!
OWLS diamond. One Way Low Speed. I guess it’s a huge cost saver as far as maintenance goes but I sure miss the crashing sounds of the standard manganese inserts when the wheels hit them. Cheers Rob

What a brilliant video JT! Cute train going over the diamonds with the old signal & a railway worker riding the back of the train just awesome. Loving Indiana! ❤😊👍
Love the GP 10 with the earmuffs. Milwaukee Road had a lot of them rebuilt from 7s and 9s in their own 35th street shops. Awesome subject and great video, enjoyed it much. Thanks JT!
This is a really great video today with some more awesome trains for train fans which I am especially seeing the diamonds, signals and everything else here as well as the train pets and slide shows thanks again for your videos and have a bless Sunday Jaw Tooth. 🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🇺🇲🇺🇲💨💨
The OWLS diamonds are very practical and save a lot of wear and tear. They are great when one line has heavy traffic and the other line has relatively light use. When both lines have heavy traffic then there is no alternative that I know of to the traditional diamond or grade separation like they have done out west in many places.
Hey jaw tooth awesome catch. Glad to see old school signals still working. Interesting diamond. Short line railroading at it's best. Have a great railroad day 🚂🙋♀️
The type of Shortline one just has to love. They make money through the car storage and the track is in good shape. It winds up in a classic Midwest town which is a bit tired. That unique diamond where you actually get to see the wheels bump over them plus that ancient signal make it that much more interesting. Sorry to hear the signal has since been replaced what can you imagine the generations of railroaders that set it in place. It's seen everything from early steam to superpower Steam to the infancy of diesels do today's tier 4 units. Someone within the last year did a tape here of what it's like to take a 100 car unit coal train out of storage and bring it there for interchange. It was a three unit group of switchers for the Madison Railway and talk about cutting the town in half plus to have CSX waiting to pick it up made it quite interesting. Plus one nostalgic look back at ccet and those early GEs as they started to gain ground. Perhaps you should be a real estate agent for fans that need to be close to the action
Jawtooth. Would the flanges damage the csx rail goimg across as it rode over them?? I saw how the rails rise up i did a close up. Call me ignorant but i don’t understand how this doesnt damge anything? Amd then going back over the other way it looks like they would have to make a big bounce over the raised rail part. I don’t understand it.
Thank you for bringing back this video on the Tilting Target Signal at the North Vernon, Indiana crossing of the Madison Railroad and CSX tracks. I remember seeing this video when you originally uploaded it. I wonder what happened to the Tilting Target Signal after CSX replaced it. I hope that CSX gave it to a railroad museum. The snippet video of the Cincinnati Eastern Railroad's B36-7 engines, which are currently sitting in limbo at the Sardinia, Ohio rail yard, was of historical significance since the two engines appear to be awaiting their demise. It was great to see the two C46-7s in action.
This is a fantastic video! Love seeing a new railroad engine now and then! Fun to watch as always! 😊 Ok...off to watch more JT videos. Have a great Sunday everyone!
Awesome train 🚆 video from Brian. I love it when this tilting signal is used, very usual. I love it when the train crosses the railroad diamonds. Please have a safe weekend. 🙏
Let me get this right please. The Madison locomotive actually goes up and over the CSX rail, is that right? If that's it, what keeps it from derailing? Is it because of the angle of the tracks that only one wheel goes over at a time? 😊 Sorry for the long question. Thanks JT.😊😊
Interesting spot with old school signal. Please, more spots like that. It's very inspiring for us train modellers. Still some spots with the round signals? Today it's often D-system signals. Many greetings from Belgium!
@JawTooth Great! Thanks a lot Jaw Tooth! Wish you many happy filming hours. It's very helpful as an inspiration source for modelling railways! From 🇧🇪 Belgium many thanks!
Thanks for the video. The old style. Switching mechanisms is new to me. I like the trains in full scale operation. Crane Indiana. And Burns city Indiana. The engine. Wow, I thought he would slow down more going across that bounce diamond! Hmm.... I'm building an HO diamond crossing a mainland track, maybe could try modeling this one. Love the manual signal!
