  • This video features the Benefit Concert that was held on June 1994 soon after Merchant was diagnosed with HIV. Several calypsonians performed to raise funds for him, including a special appearance by Merchant himself. This effort assisted in keeping him alive until his passing in May 1, 1999.

Remember, Merchant (1947-1999) died of AIDS. He contracted AIDS in 1994- Uncle Alvin back me up here, I too am going by what I read, but you have more information. I do know he was hooked on marijuana (smoking it) but then he was turned off- eventually, by the smell of it. Rest in Peace boss!!!! Your kaiso (Calypso) is classic, timeless & pure gold!!!! Listen to the lyrics of Norman, Is That You? (1977)- based on the film by Redd Foxx from 1976. Also listen to Rock It (1985), Ah Coming Too (1987), Pan In Danger (1985), Um Ba Yo (1978)- one of his earliest compositions- basically about him being an African prince. Uncle Alvin Daniell, you have a treasure chest of memories (with these shows- Calypso Showcase is first class entertainment & education in the Calypso art form & tradition).

If only Mechant was alive 2day....it's so sad that he's gone. Such talent from a genius. If he only got a 2nd chance in life. But his music and legacy will never die!!! #ContinueToRestEasyMerchie

Listening to "Holding On" it doesn't sound as if he is singing- rather he is crying (crying out to the Almighty- which is what the song is about in essence). Even Lord Melody (1926-1988) said the same thing about Harry Belafonte- about him taking Melo's "Mama Look At Boo Boo" (1955)- "They nearly go away with my entire (whole) song with a verse/chorus- Yuh tink it easy"?? 😂. Of course this expression is used in a different manner. I believe in the end, even while on stage, Merchant was repenting on stage for past mistakes/sins. We all hit those low points in life.
