Have a heart! Single Malt whisky may be made only from maltings of Barley; yeast and water. The NEW MAKE may only be matured in a first-fill Oak cask and cannot be called whisky till it crosses 3 years of age in that cask. Within the barrel, everybody knows there is whisky, 3-5-8-15 yrs old or whatever. But it MAY NOT be called whisky till that barrel is opened. Then you can put it into another cask for further maturation-FINISHING but you are now finishing a whisky. A single malt can be a blend of any number of single malts with the proviso that all composite single malts came from that ONE distillery. Easy example: Monkey Shoulder NAS. Made entirely within W. Grant's complex, a blend of single malts from Kininvie for the mass, Balvenie for the class and Glenfiddich for the balance. You will read: Made from only 3 single malts. It is actually a blend of about 15-18 single malts from the three sister distilleries. Ages vary from 5-15 years, hence the NAS.
