Any woman who has survived an abusive marriage should be very

for calling out Trump for who he is.
I disagree. How easily is a bush supposed a bear.

Abusive relationship? Are you referring to the lawfare that Trump had to undergo for the last 8 years?? Open your eyes and take off the blinders! Trumped up charges everywhere false accusations.... Lawsuits that never resulted in anything.
The uniparty had its chance. Constant wars. Constant inflation. The Standard of living dropping. Time for the next man up.
And most of us know it's not going to be easy... Because there are entrenched interests that try to destroy the system before letting reform happen. They would rather the kingdom burn down than somebody improve on the mess they made.

This channel is superb. Sean Speer and David Frum have the most adult conversation that can be found on the net for Canadians who want to learn about American politics and their consequences. I can't understand why you don't have a million followers.
He is a warmonger who needlessly killed people and spend like 8 trillion.
Perhaps they are buried under the rubble of Iraq or Afghanistan?
The only person more intelligent and competent then David Frum is Joe Biden. And the Bush Jr. administration altered the Columbian economy for decades by spraying pesticides across the country so that they could no longer sell their coffee to Europe. David Frum was part of that. He's a great guy. He's spreading democracy.
Re: "I can't understand why you don't have a million followers"
I agree however just realized there probably aren't that many whose mind can grasp a proper conversation lol.

As an American, I am appalled by this pathetic bully and how dangerous he is. Please know he is an embarrassment to very many of us. I have visited Canada several times and love the country and its people. Please stand up to him as many of us are trying to.
do you mean Sam cooper? when you go to his bureau news site in the upper left corner is a federal Member of parliament. But in the video he says he isn't political.
No…the American bully they are discussing….trump.

New listener here. Thanks David for sticking around and not retiring. I'm learning lots on these podcasts. THANK YOU.
Perhaps this is a golden opportunity for Canada to unchain itself from the self-imposed shackles of its trade dependency on the United States and to loosen its military alliance with same and accordingly seek farther fields. In both instances, that southward gaze has left us weaker than we should be. We have beggared our military far too often and our businesses have become less competitive and less productive than they could be because of the easier north-south trade.
Canadian companies have for years been sitting on hundreds of billions of dollars that should have been invested in making them more productive and in exploiting the many trade deals our governments have established over the years. While the EU nations have expanded their exports into Canada, Canadian companies have almost universally failed to take advantage of the CETA. Likewise, Canadian business has again been laggardly when it come to availing itself of the opportunities opened to it by the CPTPP. And the list goes on, be it the Caribbean, Central and South America, India, Africa, etc. There is literally a world of markets out there that Canada could turn to, and it is infuriating to see that both politicians (of all stripes) and businesses are fixated on finding a way to continue the clearly abusive relationship we have with our neighbour to the south. If we continue to court America, we are going to end up disappointed and likely the poorer for it.
Similarly, we need to form tighter military relationships with countries that are not going to regard us as an ally of convenience, to be used when the United States wants to give its military operations a veneer of legitimacy its own world profile might not otherwise lend it. This should extend to buying most of our imported equipment from European sources, rather than rewarding an administration that wants to beggar our economy. We should not be handing huge procurement deals to the American military industrial complex. And since Trump's tariffs are essentially a breach of the CUSMA, we should take the opportunity to use that precedent to cancel the contract for the F-35 fighters and for the P8 Poseidons and refuse to pay any penalties such a breach of contract might impose. We would be better served, anyway, by replacing these with the Swedish Gripen that was runner-up in the competition for Canada's new fighter and the Bombardier jet that was actually a better option than the P.8. And the bonus is that both of these could be built in Canada.
My fear is that ultimately we shall accept a very bad deal for Canada and Canadians because we have convinced ourselves that we cannot do without US trade. And eventually that will come back to bite us, making us ever weaker and more dependent on a country that is now proving itself to be an unreliable trading partner and ally, and a friend that makes our enemies seem like boy scouts.
We should not be appeasing a tyrant. Now is not the time to be Chamberlains; it is the time to be Churchillian and to stand up for ourselves and our country and seek a better, brighter future beyond the dimming horizon of the United States.
Look up Mel Hurtig and Council of Canadians from 1980s and 1990s. Good points
Excellent comment!!!
Just like Belarus is stuck (for now) with a maniacal tyrant on it's border, so is Canada. We can't afford to be the next Ukraine if we cozy up too close to China or any other power for that matter.

We will be resolute and Canada will survive. The USA leaves Canada little choice but to be strong. We now know that the USA is capricious and untrustworthy. The people as individuals may not all support Donald Trump, but as a collective group they cannot ever be trusted again. Canada should take this lesson to heart and remember, even if we become allies again out of necessity, the people of that country are not our friends.
Please don’t say that. I love and very much respect Canada and its citizens.

Australian here Janiece. Unfortunately I believe the OP is correct. Whether one voted for Trump or not, the weight of numbers who support the mindless brute has stained America as a whole forever.
The entire planet saw who (or what) he was during his first term in office - culminating in J6. To subsequently be re-elected four years on even after being impeached a 2nd time - and be adjudicated a convicted felon in the interim - means your country has no excuse. He is to the USA as Hitler was to Germany.
When presented with the choice between a crazed heartless rich old white bigot and a competent intelligent woman of colour, way too many Americans showed their own disdain for the rule of law and enthusiasm for Trump's racism.
If I was one of those Americans who voted against him I would move to a country where rational government and standards of decency still exist.

He's much better than sleepy Joe. Trump was kind enough to point out our problems since Trudeau is so inept.
The tragedy is that Trump is the America that all the antifreeze traders warned about. Unprincipled isolationist with an imperialist streak. Canada should start building its own oil refineries, cancel all arms deals with the US and join OPEC. Then Canada should start negotiations to join the EU. That, and Ontario and Quebec can shut off the hydroelectric power to the US.
6.5 billion to build the kind we need for heavy alta oil. Interestingly, Walmart just announced expansion across Canada at a cost of - you guessed it, 6.5 billion. So I’m with you.
@@1taylorgibson Make Walmart pay for it!
@ Lol! I was thinking Canada could sell bonds to Canadians to fund the refinery - like war bonds.
@@1taylorgibson$6.5B is very doable - the Feds have wasted more than that over the years on useless programs and other nonsense I am sure. We need to unleash our energy sector on the world. Kill the carbon tax and find new trading partners. This is a chance to reset ourselves and set a new path to prosperity. Trudeau’s departure couldn’t have come at a better time.
The only problem I see with that comment is the shutting off of power to northern U.S. states as that is universally considered a basic necessity of life. It would no doubt escalate matters quickly with Trump who would see it as a direct threat to the U.S. and respond at least in kind or worse, in a misguided game of one up man ship. His mental instability and emotional unpredictability makes it extremely dangerous to try to provoke him into a response which would undoubtedly be an overreaction with even more dire consequences for Canada.
I am an American, and I have for years regarded Frum concerning America as just as credible as any American commentator. I suppose I have always regarded him as more conservative, and now that conservatism in America is at best bifurcated, he is all the more interesting and valuable.
Frum is considered more or less a conservative in Canada, but not in the United States. Conservatism looks different here.

David, although a conservative (I’m not), is a rational, reasonable and intelligent person. I never get tired of listening to him or reading his articles because he is so well informed and stays away from hyperbole and emotionally-driven “news”. He simply explains the reality of what is currently happening. And that, in and of itself, in today’s media overload, is not a simple thing to do.
Intelligent yes... But he and his kind in the uniparty have had their chance. Decades of control have brought non-stop wars non-stop inflation and non-stop decreasing Living standards.
Time for a regime. No question. It won't be easy because people like David on both sides of the political aisle will be working their hardest to undo or limit the effectiveness of any change.
They would rather see Trump fail instead of succeed even if we would end up in a better place as a continent.
I am Danish. He is spot on at 9:46. The situation viewed from here is completely unreal. It feels like being stabbed in the back by a close family member.
What is going on?
No one knows...I'm in Canada. :(
Well, for one thing, Trump has imposed ridiculous tariffs on Canada and now says that if Canada responds in kind, he will increase the tariffs. Then there's what he's doing to the FBI and Inspectors General who are the guardrails of American democracy. Basically, it's a lot like the rise of the Nazi party in Germany in the 1930s, and it's being supported by oligarchs and far right Christian cults (see the Heritage Foundation, which is connected to Opus Dei and wrote Project 2025). IF you can access MSNBC on UA-cam, there are a reliable source of information (despite what any MAGA cultists and Republicans may say). MAGA Associated Disorder (MAD) is a serious condition.
Trump is a product of oligarch Rupert Murdoch and his Fox News propaganda channel. Other oligarchs who control social media platforms flood working class minds with garbage and out comes Trump in a nutshell. You control what people know you control how they act.
America is in the hands of a lawless, fascist psychopath. That's what's going on.

Do you really think Bush would've been concerned about the territorial integrity of Kuwait if it didn't have oil? Please.
moot point, for if it did not have oil Saddam Hussein wouldn't have invaded it.
People were praying for oil in Bosnia after that. You are right.
Bush Senior was in charge in the first Iraq war, and yes, he understood geopolitics and how to limit consequences of US actions, including leaving Saddam in control to limit Iran.
@ But he did not understand that he wasn't going to be President forever. He could not even convince his own son to accept the end of the war.
One of the best conversations in many months. The least amount of waffling and trying to straddle 2 horses . Thank you Mr Frum.
Since immigrating to the US in 1975, I never thought I would TODAY, be living in a country that 'openly' and preditorially approaches geopolitics as a zero-sum game. We've always (at least) had a veil of pretence that we were doing the right thing, and Americans always looked towards an ideal of spreading democratic values through leading by example (albeit that was too often not what we did - but the sentiment was there). In a post-truth world, that's no longer the case. We're now officially an imperial power, and a plurality of the toothless horde we call the voting public seem OK with that (maybe up until the body bags start showing up at Dover again, IDK).
An outsider's take on the American scene: The day will come when the world will be able to negotiate with America.
Many consumer-citizens stateside might say go for it! There are big oil and lithium reserves in Persia. Plus, with Trump's grand declarations about Greenland, Mongolia, Canada, and the Panama Canal, America looks primed to become number 1 again!
As a European visitor to your shores some years ago, I can tell you that many of my peers and colleagues back home still look up to America as being a beacon of hope and idealism for the world. Many Europeans are overwhelmed by the sheer immensity of its big box shopping infrastructure when they visite the US.
When I stayed in Cherry Hill, NJ, a couple of years ago, I made it a point to do daily shopping at the local big box. Even though the terrain in and around Cherry Hill is rather flat, I still nicknamed the area-"The Shining Big Box on the Hill". When I landed at Philadelphia International, I collected my baggage and went straight to the car rental agency. One might assume, that being European, I would've rented a compact car. But, no! When one travels abroad, one must do like the locals and go big or go home. I opted for the oversized Mazzerrati Humvee with built-in-the-dash adderall dispenser. To my enjoyment, it came equipped with a life sized portrait of Alina Habba strutting her stuff while walking down Madison Avenue dressed as the Virgin Mary.
Anyway, to conclude, I think that the US is ready for total domination under Trump and his sidekick/doppelganger-minister of foreign policy and international affairs, Dr. Quincy Magoo.
Just found the channel, great stuff on here. Thanks for the quality convos, will stick around.
I enjoy the channel and I enjoyed the additional discussion with David Frum. I disagree with his view of the benefits of free markets; otherwise known as Neoliberalism. The election of Trump is a a symptom of the significant inequity created by neoliberalism in the US. Free markets are not free markets - they are actually regulated but for the purpose of creating wealth and prosperity for corporations and not the average person. Average Americans, and increasingly Canadians, are being left behind as the equity gap continues to widen.
There are 4 principles to "free markets". 1) no barriers to entry 2) no discrimination 3) protection of property rights 4) access to perfect information. How will these principles be supported? Who makes the rules?
We don't have "free market". We have free enterprise (no regulations). And Free market is used synomonsly with free enterprise.
US secondary ed econ textbooks only mention free enterprise. Teachers cant mention free market.
I agree. Trump is the end result of the policy of neo-Liberalism for the past many decades.
Neo-Liberalism funnels wealth away from the middle and working classes to the wealthy. Both the Repulbicans and Democrats embraced this--the Democrats abandoning their historical base. That base, desperate for some relief turned to a carnival barker, unaware his policies would only make their lives worse.
I was bothered that he used coupled "Marxist Left" with "mentally ill" in the same sentence when referring to the Columbian president, Petro.

“[Trump] probably cannot rupture the relationship with Canada”.
Trump: “Hold my beer”
Trump is a LIAR. If 🇨🇦Canada was smart it would consider joining the EMERGING BRICS ECONOMIES which include China, Russia, India and UAE which is going off the USD.. As it stands now Canada sells 98% of its LNG and 60% of its Natural Resources to the USA for very low prices. The idea that the United States “subsidizes” Canada to the tune of $200 billion annually is an erroneous interpretation of the economic and energy relationship between the two nations. This claim lacks the analytical rigor necessary to withstand scrutiny when we consider the facts. First, Canada is a critical supplier of energy to the U.S., providing a substantial portion of its crude oil and natural gas needs. Approximately 60% of U.S. crude oil imports come from Canada, most notably from Alberta's oil sands, a resource that represents a significant part of Canada's energy production CANADA ENERGY REGULATOR . The United States also imports 98% of Canada’s natural gas, an essential resource that powers homes and industries across the U.S. during the colder months EIA . This energy exchange is a matter of mutual necessity, not a one-sided dependency. The term "subsidy" implies one party is providing financial support to the other. In this context, it is crucial to distinguish between a trade relationship and a financial aid arrangement. The energy Canada provides is not given as a charity or a handout; it is sold at market prices, reflecting the value of the resources being exchanged. The United States, in return, exports over $300 billion in goods to Canada annually, including vehicles, machinery, and technology EIA . This reciprocal trade benefits both economies and underpins millions of jobs on both sides of the border. Furthermore, Canada’s defense contributions are often undervalued in discussions like these. Canada is not merely a passive recipient of American protection; the two countries cooperate through NORAD and share responsibility for the defense of North America. Canada’s military, though smaller than that of the U.S., plays an active role in peacekeeping and global security efforts. The assumption that Canada "FREELOADS" on the U.S. military is therefore logically flawed and ignores decades of joint action. In sum, this claim of a "$200 billion subsidy" does not withstand scrutiny when examined through the lens of facts. Canada’s role as a supplier of essential resources to the U.S. is a mutual exchange, one that supports both economies. Similarly, the defense partnership is based on shared responsibility, not a hierarchical arrangement where one side is a mere recipient of the other’s generosity. Thus, it is neither logical nor accurate to claim that the U.S. is subsidizing Canada in the manner implied by such statements. Instead, the reality is a balanced interdependence, rooted in economic and security cooperation. 🇨🇦 BE PROUD BE CANADIAN.
The United States has 10 times the population of Canada: of course they buy more stuff from us than we buy from them! Simple arithmetic.
No-one knows where $200 billion came from. According to the US Census Bureau the figure was $45 billion in 2024.
Well said...I'm really disappointed in trump...I love America, we worked well together, I'm a proud Canadian, we will need to change our ways, if USA doesn't want us...we need strong leadership...GOD BLESS

Not my thought, but people are suggesting they will leverage this trade war with the US as an opportunity to bring in ubi for Canadians.

I wonder if the company is have figured out to pass taxes or fees onto their customers..... Has that ever happened anywhere?? What will happen to the cost of living if that happens?
There's no such thing as a free lunch. We've always been allies with the US and that should not change.
We should look to expand the number of markets where we ship our hydrocarbons... But our current government is doing everything they can to limit the growth of the oil and gas sector.
South African Australian really appreciates this objective, rational and reasonable analysis 👍🤔. ☝️❤️✌️🌍🙏

the collective amnesia of many people and media outlets regarding the heinous acts commited by the dubya regime (forgetting they were just as bad, if not worse than the big mean orange man) is nothing short of despicable!!
13:10 - The USA attacked Iraq and liberated Kuwait over the principle of territorial integrity!? That rationale certainly topped the talking points booklet for the salespeople for this war. It may have been a second order reason for some. Perhaps it was a primary reason for other allies. It was a good thing to do. However, for America, reasons 1, 2, and 3 were clearly oil, oil, and oil.

Sure, there will be more aircraft colliding in the air but it's a small price to pay for signaling your virtue.
Lowering standards has a price. Some are willing to pay it... Or at least have others pay it
@@mikesmith-nj1ijDEI doesn't usually mean lowering standards. After all, lots of white men who historically had the advantage in being hired were totally incompetent.
Those Americans won't show up like in the last election....
I share your sentiments, but your post assumes the US will have a fair and free election in 2026 and 2028. I don't believe that will happen.
Excellent interview.
I really hope you will continue with these videos during this coming threats to trade and tariffs.
Thank you so much Mr. Frum and family for hanging in there. We love you!
You know about his approval of bombing Iraq and Yugoslavia? You are a 40 watt 💡?
When you systematically call their people criminals (and worse), try to humiliate and manhandle them at every opportunity for maximum optics, impose tariffs on their agricultural products (also don't forget that Colombia has a growing aircraft maintenance hub for US carriers - making air travel cheap for Americans) ... those Chinese Belt-and-Road initiative projects start looking VERY attractive. At least the CCP isn't openly calling all your people the R word.
Glad David is back. 🎉
It
California here. I always learn at least one thing from conversations with David Frum. Guess I better order an extra five pounds of the Canadian organic wild rice I love before the tariff hits!
Rice has a long shelf life, one of the food items listed in case of famine. Good idea.
Another excellent discussion. More David Frum, please!
I wish this guy was on Trump's administration. I do disagree on his assertion that borders were important to the US. The Gulf war was not about protecting territory (Kuwait) because it was a sovereign country. There were plenty of countries that were invading neighbours. It was about protecting their oil interest, particularly if Iraq moved into Saudi Arabia from Kuwait. The US has always been about themselves but less egregious before.
Yes, but at least there was a pretense of a high-minded cause - protecting the integrity of international borders. As Francois de La Rochefoucauld said, "Hypocrisy is the tribute vice pays to virtue." Now that tribute has been dispensed with entirely, no longer regarded as necessary.
Thank you for this regular intelligent conversation
I will make the comment that as long as I can remember, Canada has always been the "poor relation" of the United States. This in no way is directed to the average American, but to their politicians who have ALWAYS taken our past and present self-effacing approach by our Canadian politicians as a means to always put us last and ignore us. This HAS TO STOP. It is a simplified statement, but true.
Not true. I was in business school in the eighties. During the free trade agreement there were constant reports from american negotiators about how many concessions Canada was willing to make. Hell, Trump is now crazy, but last time he was trying to force mexico to pay auto workers what canada and the US were so we could compete. In Canada our government essentially packed the bags for auto jobs to leave canada.
We allow tons of manufacturing along the border so that products go back and forth to avoid taxes. Like the US our own government is usually our worst enemy. We'll find out if it still is.
Good show!
Frum’s last minute was brilliant. Most people haven’t learned the lessons of those 30 years (1914-1945). Those years saw far left and far right politics increase, the rules based order retreat, globalization retreating, great depressions and pointless wars. Oh yaa and American isolation didn’t help either.
Kind of seems like now… history rhymes as Mark Twain said.
I like how he kept screaming these lessons are in books. Unfortunately, there are studies that suggest a big chunk of people never (or rarely) read books after Highschool and University.
The number one thing every person who is not an American or who is a patriotic American can do to fight Trump is not to buy any American goods or services.
The threshold for Denmark has been exited and discussions has started concerning use of public cloud and exchange of data. 96% of the population hates Trump and everything he stands for. Discussions are also taking place at EU level. Trump destroyed the relations with when he started talking about NATO in 2016.
This is interesting. I need to hear more from Danes on their thinking. I've been waiting for Puck (the only Dane I regularly follow) to say something, but right now he's gone dark. Just know all of Europe stands with you.
Denmark doesn't have the capacity to defend Greenland from Russian and perhaps Chinese Arctic territorial exploration ... that poses a military challenge for the US Navy & NATO. I suspect T is angling for greater military presence there
@ Denmark has never been responsible for military defence of Greenland as it relies on NATO. The US can adjust its military presence in Greenland every day of the year since 1941. Denmark is responsible for the foreign policy so a Russian or Chinese dominance is another illusion. A few grifters from Greenland thought that Trump would make very rich but realised that traitorous behaviour is not tolerated by Denmark. EU will increase its military presence in Greenland significantly as the US has proven to be unreliable.
@@christopherhooter1937 No, he plans to take Greenland. He was actually pretty clear on that.
@7Dorie the US has had aspirations for Greenland since 1800s, renewed during the Cold War. But I seriously doubt he would just "take it". More likely, they would cut a deal w Denmark & locals.
Shouldn't be surprised that a bully does not use soft power.
David Frum is not one to criticize Trump’s-or anyone’s-foreign policy.
Canadian here ...quit being babies
Canada has subverted its own trade options by interprovincial commerce restrictions.
And suspending pipeline projects.
Great discussion, thank you ❤
All's well that ends well? Eventually, but many countries from Germany to Vietnam can speak to the time and effort required to repair the erosion of trust.
That was so interesting. I just want to say: David, tell us a story.
American exceptionalism has been replaced by American bullyism…
Brillant!
Thanks David. You are so right on and dont hold back. Just wish you returned to Canada.
God bless this smart man ,and Thank you for your logic analysis about this angry -Felon on power.😍🙏
Thank you gentlemen. So nice to hear your intelligent conversation.
New to the channel
Well done having David Frum.
Love you David, loved your mother
"It's in books! Read them!" David Frum.
Have to say it, spellbinding great questions and such great insights. David, spend more time in Prince Edward County, Canada is your true home.
So am I correct in thinking that the price of gasoline in the US will increase soon.
I've read it could increase by 30-70c a gallon if the tariffs go through.
Canadian crude at US$65 per bbl ( 44 USG) = x 10 % = US$6.50 poer bbl / US$0.14.72 per USG
..should not hurt that much should it ?????????
David From is absolutely correct. Take heed from a man who understands political behavior. Thank you for your predatory label of Trump. So many Canadians will be boycotting the USA,... For the next 4 years anyway!
Very much listening to David Frum.
I run a ridiculous trade deficit with the grocery store and the gas station, but I don’t let it bother me.
🤣
make Americans pay 25% more on their Whilstler week pass, ouch!
I would like to add an idea: trump has excluded oil from the canadian tariffs. I would like to respond to his bulling tactics that canada will give him 25 % of the oil and 25% of the east coast electricity at double the price. lets make a deal.
